HDPE-lined Pipes


Concrete pipes internally lined with High Density Polyethylene (HDPE): the solution for optimal pipe resistance


Our reinforced concrete pipes with Protective Liner guarantee the absence of infiltration and cracks, and the resistance to chemical agents, while maintaining the mechanical characteristics of the pipe. These products have been produced and used in the most advanced countries for several years.

We have chosen the high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic material for its peculiar characteristics, i.e. resistance to chemical attack of saline, acid and alkaline solutions, as well as solvents such as alcohol, esters and ketones, and for its resistance in environments from ph 2 to ph 12 - without any effect for possible evaporation of sulphates and sulphides.


To maintain its characteristics over time is another important quality of polyethylene. Even after years of operation, the sewer (whether mixed or only black) retains the design parameters (K coefficient in Manning-Strickler's formula) which instead tends to degrade with other materials, often putting the system in critical conditions, with all the negative consequences for the health of citizens.

Through the welding of a safety band on the joint, carried out by our specialised personnel with a patent issued by the Italian Institute of Welding in Genoa, we are able to guarantee the perfect tightness of the pipelines, which can be used both in case of small pressures and in case of crossing areas with water drainage wells serving public aqueducts.

 

Our pipes have also recently undergone an air pressure test (the first case in Italy for reinforced concrete pipes with internal lining) with a positive result

 

The kilometres of HDPE-lined Pipes operating in the most varied types of projects allow us to present a new type of pipeline that, in terms of durability, environmental reliability and ease of installation, meets the increasingly stringent requirements of the new tender specifications - becoming a valid technical and also economic alternative to traditional cast iron and fibreglass pipes.

HDPE Lining System is supplied to us by one of the largest companies in the world specialised in this sector. It is a polyethylene sheet of variable thickness from 1.5 to 8 mm on which a mechanical bonding is performed in the substrate, so as to guarantee a perfect grip between liner and concrete. Our most advanced and specialised production facilities, as well as the experience acquired by our specialised workers, guarantee the highest quality of the finished product.

In reinforced concrete structures for the transport of water, one of the essential requirements is the protection of the internal surface. This protection is necessary to guarantee perfect waterproofing as well as to maintain excellent flow characteristics and high resistance to chemical agents. Traditional products have shown that unprotected concrete (or protected with epoxy paints) is not able to guarantee the durability over time required by the modern tenders.

This system, which has been used for some time in the most advanced countries in environmental protection, allows us to give our pipe the definition of a reinforced concrete pipe internally coated with polyethylene.

Advantages

The HDPE Lining System makes these advantages possible:
  • no infiltrations and fissures in the pipe
  • absolute resistance to chemicals
  • absolute abrasion resistance
  • great elasticity: the elongation at break of more than 600% compensates for any settlements of the pipeline
  • high adhesion of the liner to the concrete: the detachment resistance exceeds 38,000 kg/sq.m.

  • self-cleaning for limited internal friction

  As you can see from the photos, the internal surface of the HDPE-lined Pipe is absolutely smooth and free of imperfections, allowing to treat the reinforced concrete pipe with a roughness coefficient that with the Manning-Strickler formula goes from 75 to 90, thus being able, in particular project situations, to save a diameter (e.g. pipe diameter 140 cm in reinforced concrete not coated with 5x1000 gradient results to have a capacity equal to a pipe diameter of 120 cm in reinforced concrete and coated in polyethylene always with 5x1000 gradient).
 
  In a project the constraints of crash resistance for the pipes must be defined for the prefabricators to produce accordingly. In HDPE-lined Pipes the fissuration must not be calculated because the internal liner allows elongations of 600% and therefore even in the event of a crash, a surface area for the passage of the wastewater is guaranteed.  This allows the HDPE-lined Pipe to be placed even in seismic areas, with the care of using our guaranteed system on the joint which consists of a 3-mm thick polyethylene material band welded across the joint, so as to obtain a perfect linearity of the pipe. With this intervention on the joint it is possible to obtain pressures up to 8 bar, which places, for the first time, the reinforced concrete pipes in the target of the pressure lines.
