Coral Snakes

Identification

  • Medium sized (1.5-2.5 feet long)

  • Brightly colored, red, yellow, and black (remember the saying “red on yellow, kill a fellow, red on black, you’re alright, Jack.”)

  • If threatened, the tail is lifted up and the tip is curled over

Environment

  • Found in pine and scrub sandhill habitats

  • May be found in hardwood forests and pine flatwoods that flood

  • May be found in suburban areas

  • Found through much of the southern coastal plain (most common in Florida)

  • Spend the majority of their time underground

Threats

  • Venomous snakes

  • May bite if the snake is bothered

  • Peace of mind

Treatment

  • Keep food sources away from the home

  • Use caution when in areas they may be found

  • Preventative treatment with a product that snakes find repellent
