Free Auriol Grey the disabled pedestrian imprisoned for manslaughter of cyclist
The Issue
Iv just read the story, and seen the cctv police released of Auriol Grey and a cyclist.
Auriol Grey is a 49 year old lady with cerebral palsy and partially sighted. She was walking on the footpath next to a ring road when a cyclist came towards her, she raised her arm and angrily shouted at cyclist Celia Ward 77 who continued towards Auriol. At the point of passing the Mrs Ward loses control and falls into the road, then is tragically hit by a car and died at the scene. This is no doubt a tragedy, I’m sure the pedestrian didn’t want the cyclist to fall and die, and my sympathy goes out the Mrs Wards family. This has now become a story of 2 tragedies.
Auriol has now been convicted of manslaughter and sentenced excessively to 3 years imprisonment. Taking into account her cerebral palsy, partial blindness and the fact she was a pedestrian on a FOOTPATH, a suspended sentence would be more appropriate. The judge said it was a shared footpath, however I can’t see any signs stating this, nor could the police confirm it was a shared footpath. If the police can’t confirm it, what hope does the average public have, let alone a partially sighted, disabled member of the public? I can’t see any signs nor are there markings on the footpath stating it’s shared. If Auriol had been driving a car, the likely sentence would have been a suspended one, or just 2 years imprisonment(could be given life in the most extreme case, but unlikely).
This sentence has caused obvious anger, the full case nor full cctv has been released but what we know is the first jury couldn’t reach a decision. Auriol was partially sighted and has cerebral palsy, she was walking on a footpath that has no clear markings of being shared with cyclists, and even the police couldn’t confirm if it’s a shared footpath. Auriol walks off, and goes food shopping, not the actions of a ‘normal’ person who would have stayed and likely tried to help, showing her disability played a part in the tragedy which the judge couldn’t see the link.
We call on Dominic Raab to intervene, and release Auriol immediately.
