Recently the YMCA of Simcoe Muskoka (YSM) announced, without warning to stakeholders, their sudden intention to sell Geneva Park, the well-storied, century old leadership, youth, family and conference centre on Lake Couchiching. This iconic three kilometres of shoreline property has long been home to outdoor education programs, a family camping community for generations, youth leadership training and a destination for diverse groups providing unique opportunities to experience independence and personal empowerment. 

The financial constraints faced by non-profit organizations and society, related to the pandemic, are unquestionably challenging. The intent of this petition is to give a voice to the community’s concerns regarding YSM's decision to sell Geneva Park in haste. There was no consultation with stakeholders, donors, community or environmental groups, nor were partnership initiatives or alternative fundraising appeals explored.

We are asking the YSM Board of Directors to follow the guiding principles of the YMCA of Canada's purpose to be "dedicated to the growth of all persons in spirit, mind and body, and to their sense of responsibility to each other and the global community." The thread of this simple purpose began with the donation of Geneva Park to the National YMCA of Canada in 1905 and again when YSM, for none of its own funds, acquired the property in 2004. The YMCA's purpose was yet again reflected, less than 3 years ago, in the YSM's announcement of the "YMCA Geneva Park Rejuvenation Project - Building for the Future", still featured on the YSM website.

Petition signers envision a sustainable and environmentally progressive facility and operation guided by the purpose of the YMCA inspiring community interaction, inclusion and physical accessibility for all while preserving the natural beauty of the land.
