Product description
Review
Terrifying dreams and enigmatic prophecies mean danger for seven teen demigods, but also good times for fans of The Heroes of Olympus series. This third volume thrusts Percy, Jason, Annabeth, Hazel, Leo, Frank, and Piper into action once again. Representing both Greek and Roman camps, the seven companions undertake a mission to prevent the imminent destruction of Rome, the awakening of Gaea, and the end of the world. Meanwhile, they help Annabeth in her quest to recover the ancient statue of Athena stolen from the Parthenon. Along the way, they encounter Nemesis in Utah, Bacchus in Kansas, Phorcys in Atlanta, Aphrodite in Charleston, and Hercules at the Strait of Gibraltar. Throughout the novel, the juxtaposition of humor and terror makes both aspects of the writing more vivid. The demigods use their wits and their weapons skillfully in a string of encounters, and their insecurities make the characters all the more appealing. With a true storyteller's sense of pacing, Riordan creates another compelling adventure, right down to the cliff-hanger at the end. Stay tuned for volume four. - Carolyn Phelan Booklist Online"

- Reviewed in Canada on October 14, 2012Verified Purchase"The Mark of Athena" is the third in Rick Riordan's current series, "The Heroes of Olympus," which feature both Greek and Roman demi-gods having to join together to battle the slowly awakening Gaia, who once fully awake will destroy the human and gods' worlds and let the monsters run rampant once again. As the title suggests, this book focuses on Athena's daughter, Annabeth, who is given the task of following the Mark of Athena to recover the long-lost, gigantic and magical statue of Athena Parthenos. A hugely difficult task, but getting the Roman and Greek demi-gods to work together, let alone their respective camps, is perhaps even more impossible. Can Leo, Piper, Hazel, Frank, Jason and Percy really work with Annabeth and save the world(s), as prophecy demands? Or will Gaia's minions destroy the demi-gods and sacrifice two of them to hasten Gaia's wakening?.... I do adore Riordan's fresh YA imaginings about ancient Greek and Roman mythology, and his fast pacing and multiple points of view chapters make this a wonderful read, as usual. Of course it ends in a cliffhanger because there's at least one more book in the series (though I think it'll be two, he's got a penchant for series of five it seems), and of course you have to have read the previous two books ("The Lost Hero" and "The Son of Neptune," respectively) to make sense of this one, but if you meet those requirements, this one doesn't disappoint at all. My one problem with the book (and the series) is that, basically, as a Celtic pagan, I'm really on Gaia's side, but in this series, She's the bad guy {g}....
- Reviewed in Canada on October 15, 2012Verified PurchaseThe writing of these books are amazing, and the cover art is fantastic. This limited edition (that arrived today, much to my excitement) is beautiful and I do not regret paying a little more for this copy! However, I warn the buyer of this product to handle the book inside of the sleeve (decorative case) VERY CAREFULLY. This is not Amazon's fault, but the manufacturers put the jacket of the book on a little askew, causing some minor dents, and when the sleeve was damaged on the inside, causing the taking out and putting in of the book to be a bit snug.
That being said, I would suggest any fan of this series who loves collector's items to snatch this purchase up right away as it won't disappoint!
