Expanded control options
ZL and ZR Buttons have been added next to the L and R Buttons, and a new C Stick can be found near the A, B, X and Y Buttons, expanding your control options. With these additions, surfing the internet on your handheld is easier than ever, and the functionality brought to you by the separate Circle Pad Pro attachment is integrated into the console.
Enhanced features and processing power
Improved CPU performance allows for faster loading of applications such as Miiverse, and faster speeds for downloading software.* Upgraded camera functionality lets you take better pictures under dim lighting conditions, and with New Nintendo 3DS you can transfer data directly to and from your PC via Wireless LAN, too! You can enjoy videos online** using the Internet Browser installed on the console, plus automatic brightness adjustment optimises the screen to offer the best view for your current surroundings.
More comfortable gaming with the super-stable 3D function
This function allows the New Nintendo 3DS XL system to recognise your face using the inner camera, automatically adjusting the angle – even if you move a lot during gameplay – to give the best possible 3D experience.
Backwards compatible
You can play all your current Nintendo 3DS games on New Nintendo 3DS, and almost all Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games can be played on a New Nintendo 3DS system in 2D.***
*Download speeds may vary depending on your internet connection. **Please note: some video files may not be compatible. ***Select Nintendo DS games that use accessories in the Game Boy Advance slot of the Nintendo DS system are not compatible with the New Nintendo 3DS system.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2014Color: Red/BlackVerified PurchaseThe graphic quality in games feels a little better than original Wii quality which is pretty nice. There's also plenty of bonus apps to play with when you first get your system set up in order to get yourself warmed up to the system. Then there's the glasses free 3D effect which is pretty cool and looks amazing at first, yet after some time with it it feels a little awkward to have to hold the system still in order see the 3D in full depth correctly. But I guess that is a pretty minor thing since you can always turn the depth down or turn 3D completely off. And it may be because I have adult hands but I still feel a little uncomfortable holding the XL system for long periods of time. But I intend on getting a Circle Pad Pro eventually which will easily remedy that, and there are also comfort grips out there too. Yet these are very minor gripes to a system that is actually pretty awesome for portable gaming. The thing I do really like about the system is that even the XL fits right into my pocket and still feels more natural than say a PSP or PSvita does. You should keep in mind however that these systems don't last more than 4-6 hours of constant use, and if you do intend to be using it away from home for longer periods of time you should try to remember to bring either a charger or a battery bank in order to extend its use.
As for my reasons for getting the system, I had previously played Monster Hunter quite often on the PSP (Freedom Unite and Portable 3rd) and have found a new love for the series along with similar games for the PSvita. With Monster Hunter 4 on it's way next year I just couldn't keep myself from getting one early to play Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate to see how it would play in 3D. And I have to say that I'm enjoying it. It's also pretty fun playing multiplayer with a friend on the Wii U version. I do fully intend on getting more games for the system and am already looking forward to it. I think it's well worth getting the 3DS XL if you enjoy gaming on handheld systems or away from home.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2013Color: Red/BlackVerified PurchaseThe Nintendo 3ds XL is a very good system expecily if your a Nintendo fan. There are major improvements from the original such as the screen size which is amazing and the top screen is about the same size as the vita just maybe slightly bigger or smaller can't tell. With this bigger screen size it makes the 3d MUCH easier on the eyes but I still find myself playing with the 3d off unless I'm playing a Nintendo made game. As for the graphics besides the 3d is slightly better then the Wii which is great for a portable console. The vita however is Superior with graphics which is basically a watered down handheld ps3. The battery on the 3ds xl has been improved as well from the original 3ds maybe not enough to throw your old 3ds out and run to get the new one but its still quite nice and gives it a little edge over the vita. The speakers on the system though haven't been improved over the original and aren't all that great. I would recommend a good pair of headphones with this expecilly if you plan on using the music player.
I personally love both the vita and the 3ds but the 3ds xl is my new favorite console of this generation because of the awesome games that have came out on it. Yes there are a onslaught of remakes like Zelda ocarina of time 3d and star fox 64 3d which have been extremly improved and feel new again and are perfect for people who were to young when the 64 was out, but there are plenty of new games to keep anybody happy such as Kid Icarus (haven't played yet but heard it was awesome), Super Mario 3d Land, Resident Evil Revelations, Mario Kart 7, Luigi's mansion dark moon, Fire Emblem, Ghost Recon shadow wars, pushmo, Monster Hunter 3 and many more. Plus Upcoming ones such as Mario & Luigi dream team, Pokemon XY, Project X zone, and smash bros with many more will probably be announced later in the year.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2013Color: Red/BlackVerified PurchaseI owned the original DS (phat) and loved it but it bit the dust not to long ago (RIP) so I deiced to go all out and get this. I'm not looking back at all. The software included with the 3DS is excellent and the eShop is so much easier than carrying around games and has great content, not just small games you didn't know existed. The larger size of the XL was great because it was so much more comfortable to hold than the tiny DS models that keep me on my original DS, and the bigger screen never hurts.
Now the part most people do or don't like about the 3DS, the 3D part. Its actually a very well done system. The nice thing about it is the slider on the right side of the screen that lets you turn up or down the 3D. On its highest setting it I sometimes see double when looking at far away object on certain games (The Legend of Zelda) but if I keep the slider about half way up its fantastic. It's not looking at a screen playing a game it is like seeing though an actual window into the game. Its a new gaming experience like I've never seen before and its mind blowing. Just play with the 3D slider until you find a level you like and don't hold the screen super close and you'll have a blast. Or if you don't like the 3D (some demo games I've played have been very weird in 3d) you can just turn the 3D off and play great games without missing a thing.
If you have a DS(i) and are looking for something more this is the best gaming console I've ever used, and that includes the big names like Xbox)
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2024Color: Red/BlackVerified PurchaseThe pictures were misleading. They showed games and a case which were not included. If I had known that it was just the console, I would not have bought it for that price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
Color: Red/BlackVerified PurchaseGENERAL:
Between this system and the 3DS XL ive noticed no difference in playability or "fun factor".
As of OCT/2012 both systems still feel in their infancy and both are really fun.
The 3DS library is a bit larger, and with the DS library available youll always have a game to play.
Cutting edge games still get released for DS as well "pokemon black/white 2 for example".
CHOICE:
Having said that, if I had to pick one, which would i choose? Id still have to flip a coin to decide.
AUGMENTED REALITY:
The AR is better on the 3DS, has more modes, more to buy, and full retail games support it.
The screen looks better on the vita for obvious reasons, but if you can handle full 3D dont make
a mistake about it, the 3DS screen is better in games that support its "proper" use ... by A LOT...
ONLINE SHOP:
The eShop has come a long way and no longer sucks - brand new titles are available, and demos too. Organized like the PSN, but works like XBOXLIVE.
eShop has one flaw though. prices are straight up retarded. 32MB card is like $20
Vitas store is terrible, I cant stand it. its all there though and if you can do it youll find it better then eShop but the memory
youll need to use it with is like $80 for 32GB. way to rip off your customer base again sony. "sound familiar?"
Their excuse was "intergrity of the system" but nintendo did it with basic cards and just encrypted its content and last i check
more progress has been made against the vita. go figure - google if interested.
INTERFACE:
I prefer the 3DS but the vita's is flawless.
The way the 2nd screen is used in the menus and shows backround stuff running while your doing other things in the operating system
was pure genius.
3D vs HD CAMERA:
If the size of the screen is of concern to you, the 3DS XL is the same as the vita.
HD videos is great, as well as HD pictures - and they stay HD when you share them. HOWEVER!!!!
3D pictures and movie recording is better, but has 1 major flaw... you lose the 3D off the device
and I would put the images at about 10% less then the VITA. this isnt to say another 3DS wont see the 3d
because IT WILL. the issue comes when sharing on email, facebook, to smartphones etc which is where i find
all my images going - none in 3D even though the 3D is there. unsupported 3D will always piss ya off.
Going to be blunt, 3D Home movies is far superior to the HD, anyone who owns a 3D camera of any other type
knows it, the 3DS is no different "dont listen to vita fanboys...". but then again dont expect to be
able to share your "works of art" with others too often.
SUMMARY:
Dont listen to fanboys on either side, both systems are phenomenal. 3DS is nothing like the DSL/DSi systems.
its very powerful "multiple apps running powerful". Dont look at MHZ of the CPU either.
INTEL vs AMD has shown that it means NOTHING a 3GHZ intel is 30% faster then a 3GHZ AMD.
I would say the power in the 2 systems is probably about the same. the VITA has 4 ARM9 CPUS
and the 3DS HAS 2 ARM11 ... all things being equal, thats probably even in power.
"Single threads will run better on a 3DS for this reason, better chips. but if a game is made for 3+ threads
it will run better on the vita, but this really doesnt matter...."
having said this, remember that games on the 3DS can use only 1 core "or so ive read;) "
the other is for the system. vita is similar being split 2/2.
GPU.
Screen smaller, yes, but is the GPU weaker? NO
remember that the 3DS uses 3D, that means each pixel is counted twice and in effect the GPU on the
3DS has to do more.
vita: 960 × 544
3DS : 400×240 (800 * 480) - 3D remember.
And with the 3D on its beautiful.
The Screen with the 3D can be annoying if you shift your game around it has to stay pretty centered to get the effect
but this is much less true with the XL model; its still there but you got WAYYYYYYY more wiggle room.
Remember something, fanboys are clueless and a dying breed.
BOTH systems are fantastic for what they do, which is 2 very different things.
I own both and cant imagine not owning either one.
You wont be sorry choosing either one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome product!
Color: Red/BlackVerified PurchaseI bought two of these, one for myself and one my wife. We've both got countless hours of enjoyment out of this handheld console. The larger screen on the XL is great. It has a good weight to it, and feels very well made.
It doesn't hurt that the 3DS currently has a great catalog of games at its disposal, as well. Since my purchase, it's hard to remember a time that I haven't been eagerly awaiting at least one new release on the horizon.
