Step into the a dense, tropical wonderland of Danum Valley for the ultimate Borneo experience, adventure and bewilderment. Situated on a 438 square kilometres land, Danum Valley Conservation Area, a pristine rainforest estate, is the habitual grounds to over 340 species birds, 124 species of mammals, 72 species of reptiles and 56 species of amphibians living relatively untouched in hot and humid jungle climates. A variety of towering tropical trees, lingering lianas, exotic orchids, and overhanging epiphytes further encapsulate Danum Valley as Borneo’s natural jewel.

Jungle trek through a spectacular virgin forest trails and escape the midday heat by taking a dip in a tranquil river and drink in the beauty of this virgin forest vibes. Revered as one of the world’s most complex ecosystems, it’s environment serves as a natural abode for some of Southeast Asia’s exotic but endangered wildlife species such as the Sumatran rhino, banteng, pygmy elephants, clouded leopard, orang utan, and proboscis monkeys, as well as a vast range of Sabah’s lowland fauna.
There are different types of accommodation available in Danum Valley. Borneo Rainforest Lodge, the award-winning luxurious lodge, offers 30 individual chalets with fans and en-suite bathrooms, private infinity pool and large balcony overlooking the magnificent view of the Danum River. The alternative option will be the budget lodging in Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC) with a less hefty price tag. You can choose from twin-bedder chalets or rest houses to dormitory bunk beds in the hostel operated by Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC).
If you are a keen naturalist or adventure-seeker, being remote from human habitation and almost isolated from the hustle of modern civilization make Danum Valley the perfect escape into Borneo’s wild side. Avid birdwatchers can prop themselves on a 170-metre-long and 27-metre-high canopy walkway for a vantage view into Danum Valley extensive library of bird species. If you’re looking to expand your wildlife photography portfolio, Danum Valley serves as the perfect place to fill up your camera storage for you will find yourself surrounded by a plethora of wildlife species.
The nearest town to Danum Valley Conservation Area is Lahad Datu in the south-east coast of Sabah, which is accessible by land from Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan or Tawau. Alternatively you can fly into Lahad Datu from Kota Kinabalu via the regional airline, MASWings. The 81km drive from Lahad Datu town to Danum Valley Conservation Area takes about 2 hours, with the first 15 km of journey on a sealed road along main Lahad Datu to Tawau Highway and second portion on a well-maintained Yayasan Sabah Group logging road.
