Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray Roland Emmerich's film 2012 (2009), starring John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, and Oliver Platt. The release will be available for purchase on January 19.
Synopsis: From Roland Emmerich, director of The Day After Tomorrow and Independence Day, comes the ultimate action-adventure movie, exploding with groundbreaking special effects. As the world faces a catastrophe of apocalyptic proportions, cities collapse and continents crumble. 2012 brings and end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors. Starring John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet, Danny Glover and Woody Harrelson.
Day one purchase. This should look and sound amazing on 4K! Hoping more disaster films get released on the format since I'm a fan of the genre. (Daylight, Poseidon, Dante's Peak, Titanic, Twister, Deep Impact, Earthquake, the Airport franchise). Although there's probably zero chance of The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno, The Day After Tomorrow and Armageddon ever coming to the format thanks to Disney's anti UHD catalog stance.
OMG...I've wanted this for so long. Finally!
Better artwork than the regular blu-ray which makes it look like a biblical film. LOL
I hope Best Buy gets a steelbook.
No thanks.
I went to see this when it came to the theaters and people were laughing. It was laughable though. No even in the $10 bargain bin @ BestBuy.
@RalphoR
It's probably like half a decade away since it's a 20th Century Fox movie and Disney doesn't seem like they're in a hurry to put out anything good on 4k or in theaters/VOD for that matter
@Charles Essie This release will include the bonus disc as a regular practice for Sony! The Interactive Calendar and "Bringing Epic to Life" featurettes listed above were included in the bonus disc back in 2010!
I'm getting pretty good at this. i just saw a copy of the bluray in a thrift store two weeks ago and thought "no, they'll probably have a 4K of this soon." And look at me now!
While 2012 was entertaining enough, for a single viewing, I still feel it went overboard with the earth’s destruction and the cliffhanger style escapes are just way too far fetched. Emmerich went too far this time. While I like Independence Day, when it comes to disaster movies of the cataclysmic kind, I’m more of a Deep Impact fan. A lot movie that is a lot more measured with character development and a plot. 2012 just kept jumping from one insane moment to the next. And from a practical perspective, it was absolutely unbelievable that they could build the “arks” without the world finding out and I hated how the super rich got to survive the apocalypse. Might pick this up if it drops in price, just to have something to watch with my daughter one day. I’m sure I would have loved this film when I was 10yo.
Well this is some awesome news comes out a week before my birthday will definitely get this for my birthday. Fingers crossed that we get The Day After Tomorrow Next
ok... this is a fun entertaining disaster movie... even it's gaga... but who cares? I suppose with the Dolby Atmos track you need to invite your neighbor while watching this movie...otherwise you are in trrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrouble
Are they seriously thinking this will sell there's alot better movies even for disaster movies (the day after tomorrow, Dante's peak, twister, deep impact...) that need to be released before this garbage, I'll be waiting for a sell on this one and even then might not pick it up.
Lots more love here than I expected. This movie used to be a guilty pleasure but I haven't seen it in years. I'll gladly pick it up and am looking forward to the revisit. Yeah, it's dumb, but it's unabashedly 2012. Makes for a heck of a movie night
It's a dumb popcorn flick but I'm sure it will be eye and ear candy from Sony on the 4K format...I will add it to the collection for a dumb movie night when I want to shut off the brain and just have a laugh and enjoy a subwoofer workout.
HOLLA! I am in on this one! Sure it may be dumb and more than a little dated now eight years later, but damn is it still fun and the effects are breathtaking. Day 1 for me if possible!
Never quite understood the intended message of this one - Yay, the super-wealthy bankster cartel survives, plus a handful of 'everyday' folks. . and a little dog (?). But I will order for the sheer spectacle. . .
spudeus - the 1951 'When Worlds Collide' gave that message too, was even more problematic in my mind, but that was a product of it's time and largely an xenophobic depiction and attitude of a world catastrophe.
This movie is EPIC. Favorite disaster movie. So much fun and over the top - like John Cusack running to catch a plane which then magically takes off just in time before the ground falls out from underneath them (and this is after previously maneuvering through falling LA freeways!)
Most amused posting a "Criterion has no excuse" comment in the news article about 2012 has attracted so many down votes.
I guess the obvious joke is lost on a number of members.
Fun movie that'll look and sound great in 4K. I just rewatched this the other day and was thinking it would make for a good upgrade. Some of the effects are a bit iffy (though most of them are stunningly good), so I'm worried the increase in quality will make them look even more iffy. I guess we'll have to wait and see!
Dammit.. I'll pick this one up eventually but WHERE IS MY FINCHER 4K announcement, Sony?! Panic Room, Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.. The Social Network.. ring any bellssss?
The CGI was spectacular and the audio encoding....ouf! The part in the limo sold me many a sound systems when I was doing high end hifi at a nice shop, especially the scene with the cement truck where it goes left to right!
Recently re-watched this with my son, who had never seen it. We both really enjoyed it and I was surprised it still holds up after almost a decade. Is it silly and over-the-top? Yes. But not in an ironic, hipster way. They commit 100% and play it straight the entire film.
So many crazy characters and memorable scenes. Woody Harrelson is great as the conspiracy theorist who has his own pirate radio station. John Cusack reminds me of the white version of Argyle, the unsuspecting chauffeur in Die Hard if that character had actually helped save the day.
Not every film needs to be Criterion worthy. I like both ends of the pool--shallow and deep.
Really enjoyed the film, though I always thought they should have come up with a name that would still seem relevant after the Mayan prophecy didn't pan out.
Yup, this was cool flick. And I remember, after watchin' this. wonderin' if the world really would end in 2012 (yet, we're still here!). A definite, for sure!
Mayans were dyslexic. World was never meant to end in 2012. It's going to end in 2021 so hopefully not before January 19th cause this is day 1 pickup for me.
