Avatar Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Posted November 16, 2023 02:06 AM by

Walt Disney PicturesDisney has announced that it will release a Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray of James Cameron's Avatar (2009), starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Michelle Rodriguez. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on December 19.

Description: Written and directed by Academy Award® winner James Cameron*, Avatar is set on the lush alien world of Pandora, home of the Na'vi—beings who appear primitive but are highly evolved. Because the planet's environment is poisonous, human/Na'vi hybrids called Avatars must link to human minds to allow for free movement on Pandora. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paralyzed former Marine, becomes mobile again through one such Avatar and falls in love with a Na'vi woman (Zoe Saldańa). As a bond with her grows, he is drawn into a battle for the survival of her world.

Wow, that is an almost overwhelming list of bonus content. This entire release takes me back to the 2000s DVD bubble when the big studios went all out on these releases.

I said the same thing on the other post but you know, I’m not even mad that I’m getting double-dipped on this already. They’re adding so many more bonus features, plus Dolby Vision, plus the fact that we’re getting so much Cameron all in one fell swoop after not getting any for so long. It’s a glorious day to be a physical media collector and they can take all my money when I order all of these titles. Now JC can turn his attention to T1 4K and a redo of T2 4K for 2024.

This set looks amazing, I can retire my Blu ray digibook. Wish they didn't go with sleeve packaging though, as that can lead to scratched discs and 4K discs are more sensitive to scratches than standard blu rays.

Classic Fox double-dip. Maybe Fox does still have some say in their catalog. Glad it's coming. And it's good they at least announced it before even more people bought the original release during BF and holiday sales. I'm surprised they didn't hold off until it's time to promote the next film. Hopefully DMC has a semi-exclusive version in normal packaging. Like most, we absolutely HATE gimmicky paper sleeve cases with a passion!!!!

The cardboard sleeves are a joke but if, on inspection, they look clean I would put the 4 discs in two empty 4K cases or in a 4 disc case and just rubber band it to the original cover. Sure, it will take up more shelf space but it's worth it.

If I already own the 3D and all previous blu ray collector's editions, I don't see much of a point? This will be upscaled 4K presumably? HDR colour grading isn't enough to sell me on this, sorry. Nice of them to include a couple of new features but the existing collection was already... massive.

Why only the theatrical edition get a Atmos Track and the extended edition does not. I'm glad I never purchased the original 4k release because the extended edition is the only way to watch Avatar.
Very disappointed that the extended nor special edition got the Atmos treatment.
We did get Dolby Vision so it's not all bad

Will all three versions be graded with Dolby Vision? Or just the theatrical version? Not a fan of the sleeves for storage. Will buy it just for all 3 versions in 4K and to have at least the theatrical version in Dolby Vision on disc. Now if we can just get Terminator in 4K Dolby Vision on disc...

How is the compression gonna be? Each cut is over 2hrs and 30mins that’s a lot of content for a 100GB disc

Hate the way they suck you in for a double dip. They could have released all 3 editions on 4K when they released this with Way of Water.

I’m glad I haven’t unwrapped the plastic off the theatrical cut 4K+BD release, as I will be taking it back to JB HiFi to help offset the price of this release, which will be a very expensive import (Diznee/Pox no longer do physical media releases in Australia).

Is there any chance that this is a fresh remaster and not the AI upscaled one from earlier this year? I'd be pleasantly surprised if it was, but I'll be cautious on this one and wait for reviews. The other 3, though, The Abyss, Aliens and the golden nugget that is True Lies, those I'll be pre-ordering ASAP.

I guess it is a good things I haven't got either of these in 4K yet. Now I can get the best edition and be done with it.

As someone who just upgraded to 4K blu-rays, and as someone who always tries out his Avatar discs first thing when he gets new equipment, this is awesome news. i'll be picking up both of these releases as I don't have either on 4K. I currently only have all 11 Star Wars films, Legendary's Monsterverse films, Transformers: The Last Knight, and Apocalypse Now!.

Of course they saved the extended cut for a stupid scratchy cardboard sleeve release...

So they include the 3D version here but not for the sequel just weird.

The packaging of these two is unacceptable! How much more expensive, an unfolding digipack would be? I don’t like so cheap packs. I would hold the first releases for now.

A wasted opportunity to not release the extended 3D version, which is the only Avatar upgrade I've ever really wanted. I've waited over a decade.

I didn't need the new end scene, and I'm just fine with them leaving Papyrus as it was.

So this isn't a steelbook release? I guess Best Buy is supposed to have a steelbook release but that doesn't have the other editions?

Hopefully we get a beefed up sound mix. When I saw it in the Dolby theater it seemed like it had gotten a more aggressive mix. In other words, more than just the extra channels of Atmos. Granted, it did always seem like the blu-ray mix wasn't as strong as what we got in theaters. Either way, an Atmos mix will definitely be welcomed but it'd be nice if it was even more dynamic.
