In September, unemployment rates were higher in 5 states, lower in 1 state,
and stable in 44 states and the District of Columbia. Nonfarm payroll employment
increased in 5 states and the District and was essentially unchanged in 45 states.

Jobless rates were higher in August than a year earlier in 315 of the 389 metropolitan areas,
lower in 54, and unchanged in 20. Nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 54
metropolitan areas and was essentially unchanged in 335.
