When clients come to see me it can be for just about any reason. Sometimes I think I’ve heard everything – that is until the next person walks in the door. But there is one thing my clients have in common. No matter what the issue, ultimately every person wants to feel calmer and more centered.
When we are calm it is easier to clear our mind, bring in peace, feel more connected and be happier. It can even lead to greater health.
We are all guilty of checking out to unwind (Facebook anyone…?) If you are looking for a way to truly calm your mind, here are some of my favorite tips to help you find some inner peace.
Focus on Your Breath
Take in a few slow deep easy breaths. Notice how it feels as your chest expands and contracts. Just allow that natural flow. Can you feel your shoulders moving with each breath? Take a moment to notice how this feels. If you mind starts to wander, that’s okay, just bring your attention back to your breath.
Focus on Gratitude
Our brains are literally hardwired to remember negative things more strongly. It’s called Negativity Bias. It kept our ancestors alive, but it keeps us in stress and anxiety. When things are rough, it is easy to lose sight of the good. When you catch yourself in that negative thought-loop, take a minute or two to write down everything you are grateful for in that moment. This process literally rewires the synapses in your brain, teaching you how to be calm and centered.
Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is simply paying attention to the present, without judgement, on purpose. Sounds easy enough, right? Here is how you start. Practice while doing something simple like having a shower. Notice the temperature of the water, the way it feels and sounds when it hits your body. The way the soap smells when you rub it on your hand and into your skin. Taking in all of the sights, sounds, colors, textures, everything this experience has to offer. Mindfulness allows you focus on the present, which calms the mind.
Be Kind To Yourself
When was the last time you took time for you? Setting aside quality time for yourself allows you relax, refocus, and recharge. When you take time to take care of yourself, it allows you to be more focused and present. So, take some time and think about what you really love doing. Even little things like going for a walk, or meeting friends for a coffee. Learn to prioritize you.
