Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

You can't talk about this volume without talking about how it ends. Hell, the whole thing is basically a prelude to the final page. Even now, more than a decade after the fact, this is the single biggest curveball the story's ever seen - perhaps the biggest curveball shonen manga as a whole has ever seen, at least if you only count curveballs that make sense.

Before this point it was all pretty standard: you could see things happening and knew how they would go. Ace would be rescued, a desperate escape would be made, Whitebeard would stay behind to sacrifice himself so that the next generation could go. He's been collecting death-flags ever since the war began - a few even before - no way he'd make it out.

But Ace?!

Ace, you absolute bunglenut. You've already seen where your temper can take you, you should know your own limitations, you should know better by now, and your father figure is giving his life to get you out of here - yet still you rise on the weakest schoolyard bait conceived by a grown man! Couldn't this wait? Couldn't you mark it up for later, hunt him down at your leisure when things are done? Come on!

But no. One lashing out, followed by someone else collapsing, followed by the schoolyard bully seizing the advantage. If Ace is a bit of an idiot here, then Akainu is a lot of a jackass.

And we all know how it ends. This was not meant to be how it goes, this is not how any rational story would have done it, this is not how the plot points and characterization was setting up - it was a swerve worthy of Game of Thrones, except it made more sense. And even though the plot went back to more or less how they should be, from here on, this one deviation sent things so far off the rails that we're still picking up the pieces.

There's nothing else.

This had to be one of my all time favorite books that Eiichiro Oda has writen so far. It was action packed and full of all sorts of twist and turns, and the war against the navy isn't going to well. But in light of that I can't what to see the next islands that luffy and his crew will find in the NEW WORLD!

Heart-racing perfection from start to finish. Hit after hit after hit. There is not a panel of filler in here. Oda was on fire during these months. I picture him in Super Saiyan mode, sitting at his little desk.

There's 57 volumes of build up to the events in this one, and boy does it show. I believe the only suitable reaction is: ACE!!!!!

MARINEFORD ARC - PART 2
1. off-topic: i love that whitebeard's ship looks like a huge whale. they call it the moby dick, but the moby dick is a sperm whale. the whale of whitebeard's ship doesn't have the characteristic traits of one, though. it looks more like a blue whale, or at most, if anything else, a bowhead whale. (i definitely 100000% stick with blue whale)

2. whitebeard is an honourable man. (it's just sad that they cut the broadcast before that can be revealed)

3. why are there so many vice admirals when there's only three actual admirals?

4. my heart legit stopped at the first attempt of killing ace, and when crocodile warded them off, i could've genuinely burst out into tears at the sheer relief

5. i'm surprising that up til now, luffy hasn't used his haki yet, knowingly or unknowingly

6. KOBY, THIS IS NOT THE FUCKING TIME FOR YOU TO FUCKING TRY TO BE A "PROPER NAVY". are you fucking stupid? you've hid behind the fucking wall for ages, and want to really get into luffy's way now? is he fucking stupid? legit never have i seen fewer braincells, a missing feeling for tact or any sort of decency and honour. shut the fuck up, koby.

7. NEVERMIND. THE FUCKING HAKI. THE HAKI OHHHH MY GOOOOOOOD DONT PLAY WITH MY FEELINGS LIKE THAT

8. crocodile is so hot, when he's on the good side of history

9. what the hell is sengoku's power

10. ace is hard getting baited by the magma admiral, and it's frustrating, because there is zero merit trying to convince some random fucking loser that your connection with your captain was real. his insults don't MATTER AT ALL. like - it cannot be that this is what lead to his demise

The whole volume is hectic and grandiose. Usually, there are hints of worldbuilding, hints of who is who and what is what, yet in here there is no time. The pacing is so fast that there need to be four double pages per chapter to pack everything in. This helps the sense of danger and scale.

But the end of this volume is sinister. We save Ace. Luffy has a big smile, everyone is happy and then Akainu steps in with an insult and Ace can't just leave it. Here, I would love to have more time - but I understand that this is war and things happen suddenly.

There are so many beautiful moments too. Luffy punching Garp because he closes his eyes because he doesn't want to see Ace dead. Luffy saying to Iva, he needs another boost to continue. Whitebeard pirates helping Luffy.

What I noticed in this book is how Oda changed using double pages - he divides the pages and frames them, which previously he did not do. It frames it and puts it in a context very nicely. This happens primarily with Whitebeard, but it works really well.

Again, I don't write reviews on manga, it's just too much work. These are just notes for my personal use.

- I've been ping-ponging between really loving this volume and kinda-sorta loving it until the very end. I decided that even though the end left us at the most depressing cliffhanger ever, it still doesn't take away from the epicness that is this war.

- For this reason alone: "I AM WHITEBEARD."

- More fighting, Marines vs. Pirates, Pirates vs. Pirates, Pirates who fought FOR the Marines vs. Marines and Pirates and Goodness Knows Who Else.

- We see Whitebeard at only a fraction of his full power. This man still puts the fear on everyone else even at his very old age, and for that, I give him my utmost respect.

- I want to really like Marco, and he's actually more useful in the manga, but there wasn't much badassery happening with all the other pirates, considering there were so many different characters you had to focus on. Frankly, I think I saw more focus on the powers of the admirals than I did with Whitebeard's officers.

- And Ace. Don't get me started with this kid. What a waste of a Devil's Fruit power. Can you imagine the awesomeness it would have been if Luffy AND Ace made it to the very top? Frightening. I guess Oda had to crush that dream.

- To this day, I still hate Akainu.

One Piece, Vol. 58 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next eleven chapters (563–573) of the on-going manga series.

This tankōbon continues the Marineford Arc. The pirates suffer heavy casualties. Whitebeard goes on the offensive, using his ability to create earthquakes to protect his men, but he too is mortally wounded.

Despite the insurmountable odds, Monkey D. Luffy continues trying to reach his brother, Portgas D. Ace. His resolve causes the pirates to rally around him, giving him enough support to finally reach and rescue his brother. Having succeeded, the pirates begin to retreat and the navy, determined not to completely lose control of the situation, focuses their efforts on stopping Luffy and Ace.

The worldwide telecast is restored just as Ace is dealt a fatal blow protecting Luffy from Admiral Akainu.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part it is written and constructed rather well. Monkey D. Luffy with the aid of the escaped prisoners of Impel Down and Whitebeaerd, he manages to rescue his brother from certain death, only to have him sacrifice himself to protect Luffy from the magma attack from Akinu.

All in all, One Piece, Vol. 58 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

Weak? Say what you will but give me a break, brat… I am only one man, with one heart… Call me a demon, call me a monster.. But I can't be the strongest forever. Is it not enough to raise one young life for the future?

luffy got nearer to ace.

”Ugh… I'm just screwed up. At a time like this, why am I so happy…the tears just won't stop?! Why do I suddenly want to live?”

ivankov injected another dose of hormones such that luffy have the adrenaline to continue fighting. luffy used conqueror's haki when they almost executed ace. he doesn't even know what it is. after this, whitebeard ordered his people to back up luffy.

gramps in the way of luffy reaching to ace ): garp and luffy threw a punch at each other, and garp fell to the ground. (I'M GONNA CRY)

LUFFY REACHED ACE. sengoku destroyed the key but mr. 3 managed to create one key out of candle. ace's free! at this point, it's just a small celebration and happy moment. we all know what's coming up next.

whitebeard's final command: get out of here in one piece

”No need to speak. Just answer me one question, Ace. Am I a good father?”

fucking magma dude. i swear.

"I call the name of this Age, Whitebeard." FUUUCK MAN.

Random side, Oda's Author's Note just happens to be one that speaks to me (as a Capricorn) on so many levels:

"I'm not about people just deciding things for you without any consent.
Since the very day you were born, you're just automatically categorized as the 'Year of the Rabbit?!!' or 'Capricorn the Goat?!!'

You've gotta be kidding me!!!
I don't wanna be some damn weakling animal like that!!
With that being said, let's change this up.
'YEAR OF THE HUMAN-EATING RABBIT'
'THE DEMONIC GOAT CAPRICORN, WHO SWALLOWS ANACONDAS WHOLE'

Scary. Sounds strong."

Yup, Oda-sensei. Yes, it does.

Tomo 10/10.
