Although "My Happy Life" is a chapter book, the chapters are short and packed full of illustrations. The story is written from the viewpoint of a little girl just starting kindergarten. She lives with her Dad (her mother has passed away) and she likes to count the things that make her happy.
The story follows her through the summer with her Dad, waiting with eager anticipation for school to start, then the nervous terror when school finally arrives, followed by her first days at school, making friends, (losing friends), wanting a hamster, (not getting a hamster), really the ups and downs of a child's life.
I just loved it. The story makes you laugh and pulls at your heart strings too. When Dani's friend moves away you can just feel the heartbreak. But life goes on and best friends don't forget each other.
The story ends positively and teaches children that even when their lives don't always go according to plan and bad things happen, it's not the end of all happiness. Days go by, seasons change, and there's always something to rejoice in if we take the time to think about it.
The illustrations are absolutely adorable!
Highly recommended!
*I received a free book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
A good book to introduce to the much younger age group beginners.
This lovely story talks about a girl who lives with her father. Sometimes she gets irritated when her father doesn't respond to her questions. She attends school for the first time and she makes friends. But things became difficult when her best friend moved away.
Eventually she learns to accept life as it is and starts enjoying school again.
This story will teach the young readers about different emotions, what it means to be outside the comfort of home and face new people. It's realistic in the way how kids behave (fights, plays, teamwork) in school and get to learn new things.
Love the illustrations. I wish it was filled with colors!
There's something about the Scandinavian psyche that I must appreciate. From Elsa Beskow, to Astrid Lindgren, to Bodil Bredsdorff... All of these authors write material that I connect with, and that I think add to the body of really healthy and inspiring children's literature.
This book is beautifully designed and produced. A lovely thing to hold. The story is simple, but like "Eidi," that is a big part of its charm. A young girl longs for a friend, finds one, and then the friend moves away. As this very uncomplicated plot unfolds, Dani floats in and out of being happy, all the while negotiating the day-to-day ups and downs of real life. Despite the struggles, she finds a way to stay on the joy side of things.
A quick note: this book looks like a middle grade novel, but it is more of an easy reader. There are illustrations (very whimsical and well conceived illustrations) on just about every page and the text is slight. I zipped through it in 30 minutes or less...
When most of what the kids bring home these days is Judy Moody, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, this is a refreshing dose of goodness. Like water, almost, when the other books feel a lot more like soda and spicy cheetos...
Very sweet story about a young girl's first few months at school. This is a chapter book for early readers with short chapters, and plenty of b&w illustrations. Very cute!
16 DEC 2013 -- Beautifully told story of a little girl, Dani, and her happy life. Whenever Dani was sad, she simply counted the times she has been happy in her life, and she was not sad any longer. A very good story for teaching children (and reminding adults) to maintain a positive outlook on life and enjoy what they have right now. I, like, Dani, will count my happy times whenever I find myself unable to fall asleep or find myself feeling sad.
P.S. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book! Much appreciated.
It's very cute and I do enjoy the illustrations. I mostly read it because my students in the school library LOVE the books and I felt like I needed to see what the hype was. I'm very happily surprised. It's a cute book about a girl named Dunne and about all the things that make her happy and her first year in school. Many things happen, she finds a new best friend and loses her because she needs to move far away. This makes Dunne unhappy and she needs to find a way to be happy again.
Uczestnictwo w festiwalu literatury skandynawskiej i słuchanie o tych wszystkich cudownych historiach skierowanych do dzieci sprawiło, że sama zapragnęłam przeczytać kilka z nich.
This was a cute, short children's book. It's about a little girl namedvDani and she's counting all the things that make her happy as she tries to fall asleep. Though it says it's over 100 pages and there are chapters, the chapters are very short and their are a lot of illustrations. I read it with my children in about 30ish minutes. They all enjoyed it, even my 3 year old sat through the whole story.
Mary (6 years old): Ok, go. I liked it when she met Ella. And I also liked it when she got the hamsters, and I like how her friend named her hamster Partyboy! Anything else you liked about it? I liked it when they were all like, No! I'm not going to leave you! I'm not going to leave you! What do you think was the point of the book? I think the moral of the story is um, if your best friend moves away and your mom dies you can still be happy. Anything you didn't like about the book? I didn't really like it when her friend moved away. That was sad.
Sam (8 years old): What did you like about the book? I liked how there were lots of pictures and like it was a really quick read, we could read it in one day. (Mary--One night.) Anything else? Mmm mmm.
Dave (many years older): The illustrations were great. They did a good job of conveying the emotion of the book. The writing isn't too difficult, maybe sort of a bridge between an easy reader and more difficult books. The way the unhappy things in Dani's life are addressed are very tasteful, and laid out very much like I think a 5-year-old kid would think about them. And it's a sweet story about looking on the bright side of things. For example, rather than counting sheep or counting backwards to fall asleep, Dani counts all her happy memories. So cute.
Ekaluokkalaisen tytön arkea. Kirjassa on 136 sivua, mutta silti hyvin niukalti tekstiä. Mustavalkoista kuvitusta puolestaan on runsaasti.
The title may come across as saccharine, but this is not an empty, easy happy. Really the book is about Dani's ups and downs of happiness, with plenty of downs to overcome. Ultimately her resilience gets her through. The narration is simple and understated, brought to life with a plethora of illustrations, and young readers will easily relate to Dani's complex emotional landscape.
No mitäs tästä monien kovasti kehumasta "Onnentyttö Dunnesta" osaisi sanoa?
To pozycja o stracie bliskiej osoby, przyjaźni, rodzinie, wierze we własne możliwości. Książka posiada mnóstwo przyjemnych dla oka ilustracji. Polecam!
Rauhallinen, keskittyvä ja realistinen kuvitettu kertomus, jonka pääosassa Daniela, lempinimeltään Dunne. Hän aloittaa koulun. Saa ystäväkseen Fridan. Menettää ystävänsä, kun tämä muuttaa toiseen kaupunkiin. On aluksi yksinäinen, mutta saa sitten uusia tilalle. Ikävöi yhä parasta ystäväänsä. Ohessa tapahtuu kaikenlaista. Dunnen äiti on nukkunut pois aiemmin. He hankkivat kaksi marsua.
Contrary to the title, Dani is unhappy for a large chunk of this book, after her best friend moves away and also while she reminisces about her mother's death. But my main criticism of this children's chapter book is the lack of structure. It meanders and isn't organized around a central conflict. I'm honestly not sure what theme(s) or lesson(s) I'm supposed to take away from this story.
It’s rare to find a read-aloud chapter book for the preschool set, much less one as graceful, realistic and charming as My Happy Life. Chronicling a young Scandinavian girl’s first year of school as she worries about making a friend, makes a friend, loses a friend, grieves, makes more friends and—spoiler—reunites with her first friend, the book is sweet without being sentimental, including characters like the bad kid of kindergarten, several guinea pigs, and the protagonist’s deceased mother. Real emotions and thoughts of kids are depicted as they change over time. The illustrations are lovely and frequent.
3,5 tähteä Hassua, luin tän pari päivää sitten, mutta en muistanut enää kunnolla kirjan sisältöä. Kertooko kirjasta vai lukijasta?
Helmet-lukuhaaste 2020 - tää kirja sopii ainakin kohtiin: 4. Kirjan kannessa tai kuvauksessa on monta ihmistä 42. Kirjassa on isovanhempia 44. Kirjassa on kirjeenvaihtoa
