Stacy Waters lived a life of opulence and prestige but it was all a lie. It was a façade hiding generations of secrets and carnage.
No one truly knew her, including herself, and it drove her to the brink of insanity.
Her only comfort was the illicit love of her brother, John.
When he abandoned her, she realized that love was just another distortion. In his absence, she drowned in darkness, searching for someone like John to reciprocate her love, only to fall into the arms of monsters lurking in the shadows.
The Wolf
John Waters couldn’t reveal his true self. He was a psychopath who enjoyed killing and dreamed of making Stacy his victim every day since they met.
Through the years, a new craving that defied his nature grew stronger. Monsters like him weren’t supposed to love.
He tried to protect her by breaking her heart — again and again — but that only fueled the fire between them. It only made Stacy more determined and tempting. So he did the one thing she always begged him not to. He left.
What would you do to protect the one you cherish from your darkness?
Your One and Only by Emilie LaForet is very dark with a mile long list of trigger warnings. This book has lots of character building and development so it’s not a fast paced read. It starts with Stacy4/John6 and follows her to the age of 22/24 which is needed to understand the story but I will say parts could have been cut some and not dragged out. It’s 3rd person POV but flips between John and Stacy. This is a forbidden adopted sister mafia romance. Stacy has memories of kidnapping and wants answers while John want to 💀everything except Stacy. This is truly a DARK book and a long one. If you don’t like twisted disturbing slow burns this might not be for you. Did I enjoy it yes, would I recommend it yes but I think the book could’ve been split into two or ⅓ cut down. Did I enjoy the book I did I would say say it was a 3-3.5 star read from this debut author and would’ve been picking up book 2 when it was finished and released. However, with that said the author didn’t like my original 3 star review and thought it was okay behind closed doors in her discord chat to bully me and allow her fellow arc readers to by telling them to “hunt” after me when the book went live so it didn’t hurt her launch and that her PA hides the bodies. So for this I can’t support an author who behaves this way and thus the 1 star rating.
Check TWs for sure! This writing? Beautiful. This story? So amazing! Going through John and Stacey’s childhood to their current time was insightful. I was so wrapped up in their story because you know everything from the beginning and how it all happened. But. THAT CLIFFHANGER! Prepare yourself!
Your One and Only By Emilie LaForet ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️ 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ 💧💧💧
🚨 ⚠️ TRIGGERS!!! A lot of them!!⚠️🚨
Forbidden love, codependency, emotional damage, lots of angst and turmoil.. this book does end with a HUGE cliff hanger that will leave you reeling! This was a big book took around 15hrs to read! (No jokes!) but the world building and character development made you feel like you have known the characters their entire lives! Great read! It was dark and twisty and depressing and captivating!
VERY dark! Trigger warnings long as the book. This book has lots of character building and development. It starts with Stacy at 4 years old and ends when she’s 22 so lots of time and natural progression of events. This book is heart wrenching and will have you so engrossed in every detail. Ends on a major cliff hanger that will leave you wanting more.
The monster inside him has a taste.... a taste for STA-CY. John has fought for years to bury that psychopathic side of himself; that dark, ugly, deadly part, from his sister. Nothing will quench the thirst till his monster has what it wants. Stacy was only 4 the first time she met, John and his monster. Carnage and secrets, over the span of 18 years leaves Stacy in her own mental hell of destruction. John must leave behind the only person he has ever cared for if she is to survive him. Twisted events that no amount of opulence and prestige can dictate, has John and Stacy battling their own demons till the very end.
Genre: Dark Romance / Dark Mafia Recommend: Yes - for established Dark readers Triggers: YES (Shopping list of triggers so go into this having read them please) Book size: 811 pages (300,000 words) ending on a cliffhanger Star rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 🌶️🌶️ Format: Kindle ✅ / Physical / Audiobook POV: 3rd person
My mind is reeling with this entire book. Initial thoughts, I predicted the ending, but it didn't make it any less then. There is a lot of unpack in this book. Without a doubt, this is an emotional rollercoaster - so this is me TRYING to not give any spoilers. The story starts when Stacy is 4/ John 6 and ends at Stacy 22 / John 24 so there is a lot of character development and history. The way the author detailed and described the traumatic events, and the mental health issues, was relatable and IMO accurate from the FMC POV. Stacy's life was so unfortunate and heartbreaking. I want to hate the MMC but I just can’t - he’s the right kind of wrong and my dark mind loves it. I didn’t mind the ‘miscommunication’ of the book, but it started to eat away at me towards the end (last 1/4) because I knew it was going to end the way it did. Gutted me, knowing I knew and the uncomfortable feeling I got because you just can’t do anything to stop it. Again this is an attest to the authors writing - Emilie did an incredible job as her debut author.
Book 2 cannot come quick enough, we have a lot of unanswered questions
Mental health is real: We pass people in our daily lives with their own demons they are struggling with. We have no idea about. We see a smile and they said 'I'm fine' - always check in on your people. Be kind!
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1 in 3 women will experience sexual violence in their lifetime, with 7% of those women having experienced rape or attempted rape. *With a statistic like that, you KNOW someone/s, who have been sexually assaulted or raped*
Big thank you to Emilie LaForet for allowing me to review an ARC copy of 'Your One and Only'
ARC REVIEW!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ QUOTE - "You try to understand, for once. You try. I don't know who the fuck I am. It hurts so much I can't stand it, and I just want to die."
PLEASE CHECK TW BEFORE READING!! THIS IS NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED!!!!!
I honest have no idea where to start with this review.. it took me 2 days to read this arc.. This story was more than a rollercoaster, I can't even remember the amount of times my brain went wtf.. or the amount of times I had to stop and take a breather in the middle of a chapter because I understand exactly how the characters felt. This story was truly amazing!!
I connected with Stacy on a level I didn't expect to. I myself know the struggle Stacy had to go through day in day out. Many people will read this book and see Stacy as being a weak person when the truth is she was one of the strongest characters in this story!! Stacy battled everyday just to seem normal when on the inside it was a war zone between her mind and her body and unfortunately sometimes the mind becomes too dark a place for the body to cope with.
The story starts off with a 4 year old Stacy being ripped away from her life and thrust in to another. As the story progresses things just get more and more intense for Stacy and her mental health gets progressively worse throughout the story as she has to deal with things no one should have to deal with!
John was 6 when he first met Stacy and he though she was the most beautiful little girl he had even seen but John had his own darkness keeping him company. His own monster he couldn't get rid of even if he wanted to. John didn't understand human emotion the way everyone else did but when he saw Stacy everything changed for him, he could taste the fear coating her skin and loved the fact that she was terrified. He didn't understand why his little bunny was so terrified though but to John she was his everything.
The character development from the first chapter till the end was amazing!! I think the biggest development was Johnny. You could see the changes in Johnny throughout the whole book and even though sometimes I wanted to choke him I understand his reasons for everything he did.
This story is more than John and Stacy though! This book contains alot of different subject matters that alot of people will find difficult to read about however the subject matters are extremely important to this story!! For anyone who battles depression/ anxiety I hope this book helps you in the way it's helped me.
Even though this story was difficult to read I highly recommend it. I appreciate the opportunity I had to read this book and I hope everyone loves it as much as I have 🤍🤍
Stacy has memories that don’t align with the life she lives. She feels like she doesn’t belong, but her brother John is the only one who comforts her. John likes to tear apart everything and he wants to tear apart Stacy, but he also cares for her. This book takes starts when Stacy is four and John is six and ends when Stacy is Twenty-two and John is twenty-four. This is an intensely powerful book with twists and turns. Hidden secrets. Great characters and storyline Highly recommended Excellent book. Love Stacy and John. Great supporting characters. This book brings up some serious topics please read trigger warnings. I felt this book so deeply and I couldn’t put it down. I suffer from depression and anxiety and the author explains it perfectly thank you. This is my first book by this author definitely not my last. Ends on a cliffhanger but book Two is coming soon
Thankful for the chance to get to read an ARC of Ems debut novel. As others had said, check your triggers because this book is full of them. I love a dark mmc, and this book delivers. I don't typically care for a slowburn (but I knew that going into book), but this story has plot and character development that kept me interested and entertained. I love how, instead of flashbacks, you get the chance to grow up with the characters, and I haven't read something like that before. This book covers a whole range of emotions and feelings, so be prepared for a roller coaster of emotions!
Okay, wow. First off this whole book was just absolutely amazing!
Secondly, when I say I couldn't put it down. I really couldn't and now I'm so angry at myself for finishing it because now I have to wait for book 2. (BOOOOO). That's what you get for reading it in 12 hours.
This is such a beautiful, raw and real story no matter how you spin it. There's some women out there living this life, in one way or another. Whether it's dealing with the aftermath of being kidnapped, or a sexual abuse incident, or major depressive disorder, or falling in love with your abuser. Cause that's what happened. It was such small subtle ways though that to me the only real problem was that he wanted to kill her, and almost tried.. TWICE. I mean, he's got his own demons. He's a psychopath. That's normal thoughts for him. But the growth that John makes, and the space that he thought he was giving Stacy was amazing, and I wish they didn't have to separate for so long, and that the horrible things that happened when they were apart didn't happen.
There were one too many people wanting to hurt this poor tortured soul, and she truly only ever wanted to be loved, needed, and have her mama. Fuck Shaun, Martin, that gross other guy, Paige and Dennis. May they never rest in peace! (We don't see that Shaun, and Martin die in this book, but I know it's coming. There's no way they live once the family finds out).
I loved that Em took such great care to make sure everyone understood that this novel is DARK. It starts dark, and it only gets darker. The few little glimmers of light that she gives you is what keeps you reading. 🤌🏾
I've read some dark books, but this takes the cake. In the best way possible though.
I was mad that John could let her leave in the state she was in. If the love of your life SHOWS UP 5 YEARS LATER HYSTERICAL YOU DO NOT LET HER LEAVE ALONE!!!!!!
** Also, I completely forgot to add this but if you have time. Check out the Spotify Playlist I made it's all the songs to the chapter recommendations. I personally listened to them as I was reading. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3i4...

Mafia and dual third person POV aren’t usually my go-to tropes. But after seeing all the hype surrounding this book, I knew I needed to read it ASAP. And I’m not sure what to say.
This book is a lot. I’d wanted to like it. I really did. The art and poems are great. The MMC had some character growth. The FMC does the opposite.
This one is long. And slow. Usually a book this size only takes me two days to get through. This one took me most of the week. And the triggers are plentiful.
Be mindful of the MCs toxicity, as well as the triggers. Parts of this book feel as though the author wrote every shocking thing possible, simply for the shock factor. I won’t be reading book two.
Wow! This novel is real and raw, and left me trying to unravel my emotions (in a good way).
Kudos to Emilie for this work of absolute literary gold. This story is heart breaking and emotional, but it is very real and relevant.
There are trigger warnings so please read them.
It ends on a massive cliff hanger and boy was I reeling when I finished, I felt emotionally spent.
This is one read that is going to take me a couple of days to digest.
After saying all of that, I loved it. It is so well written and very respectfully deals with some very serious issues that many people have to deal with in their lives.
Book: Your One and Only Author: Emilie Lafort Rate: 5 Stars to infinity 🌟♾️ Spice level: 3.5🌶️ Genre: Dark Mafia Romance
⚠️PLEASE CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS⚠️
WOW!! 🤩Just WOW!!! 🤯🤩 I am lost in words. Emilie you sure did a wonderful job with this book and I can’t wait for part 2. Reading what Stacy went through with her depression…😔 Man I felt it since I myself suffer from it. It’s something that is hard to fight alone. Now this book is very DARK!!! It ends in a bad a$$ CLIFFHANGER!!! So be prepared… you have been warned🤭!!! The story, the writing, the plot, the poems… it's totally worth it!!! Look I recommended this book big time… So like hurry up and add it to your TBR!!!!
SPOILERS!!!!
The storyline starts off with Tatiana in the beginning of the chapter at the age of 4 who later was given a new name which was Stacy. Stacy, still unknown what really happened to her family since she was too young to really remember, was taken to the DiSantos family. Their last name was changed by John’s grandfather in which it was now called the Waters family, that way people can’t connected to the worse mafia in world history. Stacy grew up with John who was her brother. When John met Stacy for the first time he was amazed in a way that he called her his “bunny”, he had a new toy to play with 🫣 more like a prey. While spending time together and growing up John and Stacy started to build feelings for each other. Not just simple “brother & sister” love. Where does this take them!??? The story goes until full detail until Stacy turns 22 and John 24. That sure was a rollercoaster of emotions for me till the end!!!
Throughout the years Stacy goes through alot and when I mean alot is alot… From being sexually assaulted at a young age to actually getting blacked out and held hostage plus raped as an adult. That really broke me. But before that happened she was able to go to college and own her business in fashion. She had wonderful roommates when she was in college who were Jimmy, Michael and Anita. They followed all the way and Michael even worked for her.

This story follows (Tatiana) Stacy Waters also known as 'Bunny.' Who was kidnapped at the age of 4 by the Mafia. Living a life of fortune and authority based on lies and generations of dark secrets. Stacy soon finds herself drowning into a world of darkness and falls into the arms of a monster. John Waters known as 'The Wolf.' Claiming Stacy as his victim of repeated heartbreak. How far would you go to protect the one you adore?
Wow! I loved this book. Had me on an emotional rollercoaster. It will leave you shocked, angry, upset, frustrated, pull at your heartstrings and more.. Its been a while i've read a book that caused me so many emotions! But i loved it!
Great character development. The whole book for me was so beautifully written and captivating from the very first page! Some of the Poems written in this book are so powerful and relatable. The way the author captured the raw emotions Stacy was going through was so understanding on so many levels. The book does contain the harsh realities of Sexual Assault and depression and how these can go hand in hand with how it can affect an individuals life on a daily basis.
This book is written in multiple POV. (love) At the start of every chapter there were illustrations and age timelines of the characters. The age timelines helped understand some traumatic events Stacy had to endure multiple times in her life, starting at the young age of 4 following her into her early twenties. She takes great comfort in John, hes her comfort and safe space.
This book is book 1 of a series and is a slow burn. Troupes include -beauty and the beast vibe, forbidden love, MMC etc.. Some triggers include- Kidnapping, bullying, sexu@l assault, depression, drug usage etc.
The playlist to this book is well put together great choice of songs. The cliffhanger had me 😮😣😭 so many emotions!
Cant wait to read the next books in the series! To continue the story. Spice rating i would rate a 3.5 and overall a solid 5 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The cover of this book is absolutely beautiful and when i seen it i had to sign up to the ARC of this.. I want to say a massive thank you to the author.
Please please please read trigger warnings. This is a very dark book involving multiple triggering scenes and a cliffhanger ending.
Emilie I absolutely love you! Don’t get me wrong this book completely destroyed me but it was definitely a book I needed. I only wish a book like this was our years ago - maybe I would of handled my own trauma slightly different.
Stacy is 100% relatable and my god did I fall head over heels for John. I honestly get the whole obsession and codependency and I really felt like all the topics were written well and obviously by someone who has been through it themselves as let’s face it, it’s a demon that is only known and understood by those who have been in its clutches themselves.
I cried the whole way through this book. No exaggeration it hit my emotions hard. But as bad as that sounds I like that this book was able to do that. I honestly couldn’t praise Emilie enough for being so brave writing this book. I honestly dread to think what your real life story is but thank you form the bottom of my heart for being brave enough to share this with us. Too many people go through this thinking they are alone and it’s books like this that prove we aren’t alone!
Gosh I’m a mess even writing this review. This book really is for all of those survivors out there! Whether that be SA, Depression, Self-harm, family traumas. It is all trauma and it is all valid. Know you are not alone.
Finishing off on a positive note I am excited for the next book. I know there is so much retribution to come and I really really hope John helps Stacy heal and that she because his Queen the way she is meant to!
Wow, what an emotional and heartbreaking read this was. This is the first in a duet and is a dark taboo romance. It follows the life of John and his adopted sister Stacy from childhood to early twenties. The taboo aspect is in the feelings that they have for each other as they grow up, and that is why this particular book is a slow burn. It is in 3rd person with multiple POV and includes poems in between some chapters.
From the blurb and build-up for this book, I knew it was going to be an emotional read, but I was not prepared for just how much it would affect me. There were times when I literally felt like I was there in the moment, and I truly felt every emotion being described on the page. The poems were heartbreaking yet beautiful and really added to the overall story. I can't even describe the emotional turmoil I felt at that cliffhanger. I can not wait to read the second part of this duet and see how John and Stacy overcome everything that was thown at them in this book. Now, this book has TW galore and deals with some very heavy themes, so you really need to check very carefully before you dive in.
This book... Where to begin? This one was definitely a tough read. I do not typically read books written in the 3rd person, as it is hard for me to get into. It took me until 70-80% of the book to fully get into it. I stuck with this one and I am glad I did. This was my first book by Emilie. She really hit the nail on the head by going in-depth on how depression and mental health affect people. Stacy the MFC at first just came off as whiney and super needy to me in the beginning. I honestly couldn't stand her. John on the other hand I instantly fell in love with. His personality type is a HUGE red flag, which happens to be my favorite color. I understand why John treated Stacy the way that he did. He was so drawn to her but, due to the fact that they grew up as siblings, he just couldn't fully give in to temptation. Stacy was a huge mess for 100% of the book, because of it. I really felt for both of them. The cliffhanger of this book was what I was expecting and I am so glad that John was the one to see it. I don't want to give any spoilers so, I apologize if this doesn't make sense. This book is basically a lot of back and forth. The amount of things that happened to Stacy was beginning to piss me off. Every time she turned around something was happening to her. However, a lot of the time she put herself in those situations as she was constantly seeking the love that only John could provide her. The poor girl couldn't catch a break. I had high hopes for Shaun and he let me down. Then I had high hopes for Martin and he let me down. I pray Stacy blurts it out to John and doesn't drag it out. But knowing Stacy she is going to fully drag it out the majority of the next book I am sure. I hope John finds him and David and makes their end slow and painful for what they did to Stacy. I was a little upset with the fact that this book refused to explain why Stacy aka Tatianna aka Bunny was kidnapped. I wish Emilie would've gone into some of that detail or given a better explanation to the readers on why it happened. Instead, it is only brought up a couple of times and not much is said about it. All in all, the book was good. I feel some of it was drug out and could've been left out completely as it was unnecessary information. Hopefully we will see more of Johns side in book 2 as he was left out quite a bit in book 1.
Oh my gosh this book!! I have no words!! Aahhhh all I can say is that this book is very intense & emotional!! Im an emotional wreck with my feelings all over the place!! 😭😭 & that cliffhanger 😭😭 I really need book two like now please!!
Oh my gosh my heart just breaks for Stacy 😭😭 she just can’t catch a freak’n break.. she goes through so damn much oh my gosh!!! Her emotions are so raw & real you can really connect with her & what she goes through..
She’s so freak’n sweet & I love her character to pieces!! I really hope to see things get better for her..
John he has his own monster he’s dealing with.. He’s not one for feeling emotions until Stacy comes along.. oh my gosh there’s so much growth & character development.. everything is written amazingly.. love him too by the way..
I’m not gonna lie this was not an easy read but it was truly worth it.. Please be aware of the trigger warnings going into this book & do not take them lightly!! ♥️🖤
Favorite Quote: “Shut up. None of that is true. None of it. You’re my one and only. Do you understand what that means? You’re it Stacy.” 🐇
I suppose I should start off by saying PLEASE PLEASE check your 🚨⚠️trigger warnings. 🚨⚠️. After reading this story I had to take a couple days to let my book hangover go away. I couldn’t read or review. I was a mess. I couldn’t stop thinking about the story and after that giant CLIFFHANGER, and what I hope 🤞🏻 comes next. 🥲 (Is it bad when you want the psycho to kill people? Like I have a short list for him right now. LOL. ) I can’t even put into words how much I LOVED 🩶 this book. This is such a heart wrenching story full of emotions like, really a roller coaster of raw emotions, and I LOVED every minute of it. 🐇😈 (I can’t stop saying how much I loved it). I can relate to Stacy from my own experiences. It was actually healing in a way. The character development was amazing and I loved how Em gave us the ages at the beginning of each chapter. The beauty and the beast vibe 🐇😈🤌🏼. Em I am so so impressed this is your debut novel I am so proud of you. It was truly amazing. I don’t know if it’s weird to give an Author a standing ovation but you have one from me Emilie LaForet for sure. I have officially added you to my favorite authors list. I can’t wait for book 2. I highly recommend this book to anyone who can take the🚨Trigger Warnings🚨 Here are a few. ⚠️ONLY⚠️ a few. Emotional damage, kidnapping, attempted suicide, severe depression, rape …..
John and Stacy meet at age 6/4, and we see how they grow up in a Mafia family. The mafia side of the family remain in the background except for Johns penchant for revenge especially when it is to protect Stacy. Stacy has such a difficult life after the age of 4, except for John, who becomes the centre of her life. He is her constant. She is bullied, he is there, she falls in love, he is there, her love is unrequited and he is still there comforting her. Even across the world, John still is there for her, and who she needs. He has a way of making Stacy feel safe, and that extends to us, the reader, and the support to navigate the difficulty tropes in the book. The book is so beautiful, it touched me completely and remains with me. I was hooked from the first page to the end! And I couldn't sleep until I had finished it. The authors magical ability to fully immerse you in their world is amazing. A must read.
I normally tear through books at a super-rapid pace. Not "Your One and Only" by Emilie LaForet. I took my time, I read, I freaked out at what I read, I cried a bit, I thought about what I had read, and then I read some more. For a week!!!
This was the first book with a Mafia Dark Romance theme that I have read, but it is SO much more than the genre. All the elements are there. But then there is more.. so much more. The DiSantos family has secrets. And inner monsters. Yet you love them all. You are appalled by what you just read, yet you can totally relate to the deep love, the connections, the rage, the sense of loss, the insecurity, the strength after adversity and just the power that brings us back home to those we love.
I cannot wait for book 2, even after 700 pages, my heart pines for more...
A beautifully haunting and dark debut novel. Please make sure you read the trigger warnings before diving in, but if you can handle those, settle in and get ready, you will be so glad you did.
Thank you to Emilie Foret for an advanced readers copy. All opinions are my own.
Let me start off by saying this book was written very well.
This is a poetic story of 2 people lost in their own struggles and being the comfort for each other. I had a very hard time getting into the book due to it being different than I’m used to reading. (Which is totally a me issue)
After sitting and contemplating about the beginning half of the book it started to make sense to me that this is a poetic representation of 2 people with their own mental disorders that find comfort together and only together. They are each others safe space.
Once I realized that the book flew by for me. I absolutely loved it.
But…. That cliffhanger though!!!! I’m still over here like hey… excuse me… I need moreeeee. I need to know what happens! Needless to say I will be reading the next books in the series!
This book had me in a total chokehold. I absolutely loved every minute of it and devoured it within 24 hours. Stacey is kidnapped at 4 by a man she didn't recognize. He became the Don and forges her birth certificate so no one would know what happened. Her adopted father, Johnathan, thinks that since she is so young , she would forget everything that happened, but Stacey never forgot. She was absolutely desperate to find the mother she was taken from. As soon as she met John, the son of Johnathan, she immediately felt safe. They were so close growing up. Stacey was madly in love with him, but he saw her as a sister and wouldn't allow anything to happen between them. He knows she depends on him, and he likes that. But eventually, he leaves her when she is 18. He wants her to find her own way in life.and he was escaping from the feeling he shouldn’t have had for her. This book was so good. The attachment between these characters was amazing to read about. There are so many things that happen to poor Stacey. All she wants is to be loved by John but knows he will never feel the same. It was so heartbreaking to read but also had addicted. I absolutely can't wait to read book two!
WOW!! This book was a crazy ride!! The emotion and feeling in this book will definitely send you into a whirlwind some times into a high sometimes into sadness!! But I really like this book.. you can definitely tell the author put her own soul into this book! That cliffhanger was jaw dropping like book two need to be in my hands now!! Want a book that makes you feel all the feelings read this one!!
Firstly I wont post spoilers because if you want to know READ IT! Now then, I have sat on this review for a few days now because honestly I had no idea how to put into words what this book made me feel and words are my life, or even where the hell to begin.
Alas I will start at the beginning, I stumbled across Emilie on tiktok back mid Jan and since then right up until release she tormented me and others with her booktoks for this book.
I won’t lie and I will not pull punches, this book is an emotional roller coaster that will leave you with one hell of a book hangover! As one who becomes invested when reading and often feels what the characters feel I went through way more Kleenex and chocolate than most would have. If I could give this book ten stars I would it was that damned good. I am dying for the second book to drop so I can finish the story.
Em, I know you’re reading this, baby girl you knocked this out the park and then some. Straight up with a twist. Well done babes!
CHECK YOUR TRIGGER WARNINGS AND YOUR MENTAL HEALTH PRIOR TO DIVING INTO THIS BOOK!
This book was INCREDIBLE. John and Stacy’s story was worth the 700+ page book. Emilie did a phenomenal job with the characters of this story, creating a detailed time line starting out at the age of 4 all the way through the age of 22 to wrap you up in the characters of this book. She gives you the full picture into their everyday lives, their mental health, and so much more. The progression was very well done but still left you wanting more with so many unanswered questions (impatiently awaiting book 2). I was on the edge of my seat throughout this entire book. It will also take you on a rough emotional rollercoaster totally worth the ride. And the CLIFFHANGER.. ugh.
This is my first book by Emilie Laforet and I had the privilege to read it as one of her ARC readers. And all I can say is WTF because the cliffhanger left me with some serious issues emotionally.
What happens when you start asking questions about who you are? Why does everyone keep saying ‘in this family things are a need to know’ don’t you have a right to know? When you find yourself in a place you don’t recognize standing in front of someone so familiar yet still a complete stranger, will the demons finally be silenced? What happens when you say goodbye to your brother for the last time, does he just let you leave?
Stacy has a complicated history and a “family” everyone keeps telling her she belongs to but she deep down knows something isn’t right. As she gets older she starts to realize something’s about her and her family don’t quite add up and she starts asking questions and even goes as far as hiring a PI, which leads nowhere. She has this unexplainable love for her brother John but she doesn’t understand it because they’re siblings right? Stacy has always sought out the comfort of her older brother John whenever she was sad or hurt that is until one day she learns he’s left her behind forever without as much as a goodbye.
John has always been a psychopath and has always caused trouble until one night when his father brings home his new little sister. John instantly found himself caring for her in ways he’s never cared about someone else before. As they got old John always found himself helping Stacy through difficult moments. Until one day when he decides he will leave and never come back. For five years they had no contact with each other then, Stacy shows up unexpectedly in Paris at his doorstep rambling incoherently.
Slowly beginning to put pieces together as to why she is there he learns through a phone call from their mom that Stacy’s been missing for five days and he begins to wonder exactly what happened to her. When John asks Stacy she tells him nothing about what made her come to him. All Stacy says is goodbye and walks away.
Ever wondered what mental trauma looks like? How about what goes through a psychopath’s mind? This book takes you on an emotional journey with very descriptive insights into things that before I could only guess at.
Stacy and John begin their journey together as small children when. We see their evolution up through early 20’s. I rooted for them and then was frustrated by them all through this book.
I really enjoyed this read and cannot wait to see what happens in book 2 as this one left on a cliffhanger.
I absolutely loved the character building and development through the book. Stacy and John are one of my favorite book relationships. This book is full of triggers so please make sure you check them before reading.
I am so many things. One, I just want to thank Emilie LaForet for her heartbreaking and very real portrayal of a sexual abuse survivor and the following depression that results from the trauma. I have read so many books, and being a sexual abuse survivor those books never seemed to accurately portray the absolute darkness and blame that goes along with it. So thank you for giving us a voice. And for being so honest no matter how dark and fucked up our trauma truly is.
The writing was EPIC. I felt every emotion reading this book. Anger. Sadness. Love. I felt it ALL. I’ve never read anything like this. And good lord the SPICE 😍🤤 I have never read a book where even sex scenes with secondary characters made me hot and bothered. But good LORD. Was it the brothers voyeurism?? Damn maybe I have a voyeur kink that I just discovered.
That CLIFFHANGER. I AM TRAUMATIZED. I will be counting the days for the next book and the rest after that.
This book is so damn unique and different from everything else out there. Give it a chance. You won’t be disappointed.
Where can I ever begin with this book? This is the hardest book I have ever had to finish! It was the most heartbreaking and beautiful story I have EVER had the pleasure of reading! You can tell in the story how the authors life literally bleeds into the story itself! I related on almost all levels with Stacy ! She’s so strong for everything she went through! I cannot express enough how much this book especially the ending broke my fucking heart! John and Stacy loved eachother so much they wouldn’t let their love be or grow! I hope so much that this ending shows them that they are it for each other and only each other. I absolutely love John with my whole heart! The book itself was a work of heartache but beautiful beyond words! Thank you to the author for making all us victims see that we are not alone! I will forever hold this story in my heart!
