Derek Harrington returns in this brand new adventure of man vs wild―and the domestic terrorists hidden there
One year after the clash with his former students in upstate New York, retired Marine Warrant Officer and SERE instructor Derek Harrington is the tip of the FBI’s spear in their mission to eradicate the domestic terrorist group known as Autumn’s Tithe. After several successful operations intelligence points to one final camp in the remote Kentucky wilderness, and Derek prepares to take down Autumn’s Tithe for good.
At the same time ex-FBI Special Agent Hannah Kittle, or Sarah as she is known to the group, devises a plan to meet Derek and her one-time Bureau colleagues head on. Yet her benefactor's faith in Sarah's ability to lead Autumn's Tithe is waning, and other plans are being enacted. Knowing full well what it means for her should those plans succeed where she has failed, Sarah will stop at nothing to see that she is the victor.
As the competing agendas unravel, events place Derek and Sarah on a collision course, setting the stage for a confrontation that will bring Autumn’s Tithe right to Derek’s doorstep.
T. R. HENDRICKS is a former United States Army Captain who served as a tank platoon leader, and then as a military intelligence officer, where he was an advisor to the Iraqi Ministry of Interior's National Information and Intelligence Agency. When not working or writing in his home in upstate New York, Hendricks is most likely reading, woodworking, or watching his beloved San Francisco 49ers. The Instructor is his first novel.
"The Instructor is an unexpected pleasure, crackling with intensity, vivid with authenticity and emotion. T.R. Hendricks writes like a knife fight on a moonless night--fast, brutal, and bloody." --Nick Petrie, bestselling author of The Breaker and other Peter Ash novels
"Gritty, timely, and packed with action, The Instructor is a pulse-pounding thriller and a fabulous start to the Derek Harrington series. T.R. Hendricks delivers on all cylinders!" --Simon Gervais, former RCMP counterterrorism officer and bestselling author of The Last Protector
"Thrumming with action and authenticity, Hendricks knocks it out of the park with his debut. The Instructor is not to be missed!" --Connor Sullivan, author of Sleeping Bear
"The Instructor, by T.R. Hendricks, is a brilliant debut by an author who obviously knows his stuff! Derek Harrington is a terrific new hero, a former Marine and wilderness survival expert who finds himself in a battle of wits against both a determined enemy and nature itself. Packed with action, tension, and humanity, The Instructor delivers." --Mark Greaney #1 NYT bestselling author of Burner, a Gray Man Novel
The Infiltrator by T. R. Hendricks has an action-packed start that immediately engages readers. This is the second book in the military action thriller series featuring Derek Harrington and takes place one year after the events in the first book. Derek is working as a contractor for the FBI to bring down a group called Autumn’s Tithe for good. They are intent on destroying the government.
Intelligence points to another camp in a remote area of Kentucky in Daniel Boone National Forest and Derek must locate it before they attack. At the same time, ex-FBI Special Agent Hannah Kittle, known as Sarah, devises a plan to get revenge on Derek and her ex-colleagues. However, Autumn’s Tithe’s benefactor’s faith in Sarah is waning and has set other plans in action as well.
Derek is a retired Marine Warrant Officer and survival, evasion, resistance, and escape instructor who is a wilderness survival expert with significant field acumen as well as technical and tactical expertise. He’s tenacious and perseveres in the face of adversity. He also loves his ex-wife Kim and their son Michael. Derek suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and nature is his sanctuary. Despite his flaws, he and his extraction team are likeable. They’re characters you can easily root for and hope they succeed in all of their endeavors. The addition of Special Agent in Charge Samuel Liu added additional conflict and politics to the story line. Sarah feels somewhat one-dimensional with her sole focus on revenge. Many of the other characters interacting with Sarah and Derek came to life as well.
The author does a fantastic job with atmosphere and world-building. I felt like I was with Derek and his team throughout the novel. There are significant descriptions of weapons and tactics, too. While most of the story is from Derek’s point of view, there are occasional insights from other characters, including Sarah. Hendricks balances the shocking and upsetting aspects of the novel against the investigation into Autumn’s Tithe, Derek and his team’s training, as well as his interactions with his family. The action sequences are superb. While I wasn’t quite 100 per cent satisfied with the ending, it left the door open for another book, which is something to look forward to. Themes include death, anger, security, revenge, family, friendship, fear, trust, lies, politics, and much more.
Overall, this exciting and suspenseful novel is a powerful page-turner with great world-building details and tension that feels alive. The author’s military background made this novel feel authentic. I hope there is a third book in the series.

The Infiltrator, book 2 in the Derek Harrington series by T.R. Hendricks, is action packed. It’s an armed-to-the-teeth crawl, roll, run for your life read!
Derek Harrington, a retired Marine and SERE instructor, is now working with the FBI to track and shut down a domestic terrorist group hunkered down in isolated sites throughout the US wilderness. Derek tangled with this group in the first book and the fight continues here. Readers follow Derek on ops and trainings with his elite team and downtime with his family. It all comes together to reveal a strong, likeable character you can’t help rooting for.
I love Derek. He is SO easy to like! But this time out, Derek felt restrained, like his volume was turned down low. Several other characters were introduced, which took a lot of time away from Derek. We don’t learn much more about our Survival Evasion Resistance & Escape badass in this book. I wanted a bigger peek behind the curtain. Perhaps a bit more of Derek’s history. The action scenes did all the talking here. A bit too much talking. At one point, the call signs and acronyms got to be too much. So much so that I actually forgot who the players were on one pivotal operation. Don’t get me wrong, the scenes were gripping—I had to keep reading! But I expected and longed for more of a confrontation with Sarah. And…
All that said, I still highly recommend this series. It’s a fast moving, easy to read book with a character I want to see and learn more about. I already can’t wait for the next installment. Bring it on!
p.s. This line pulled a smile across my face…. “The other branches made about as much sense as a soup sandwich to him sometimes.”
And after a training mission goes wrong, this piece of advice from Derek hit me pretty hard. Words I took to heart…
“There’s no right or wrong way to process it. Just ride out the wave and take what comes at you. But I’ll tell you this much, don’t dwell on it. You can recognize what happened, but don’t linger. The sooner you realize that, the sooner you’ll stop letting things eat away at you.”
Derek Harrington is back in The Infiltrator by T. R. Hendricks. It's hard to believe it's only the second book in this series since the impact of it makes it feel like it's been around for longer than that. It's new and fresh and the author has created some great characters and his own version of mayhem. I love it. This book continues the struggles from book one and maybe Derek will put the uprising to bed in this one? It's available in April and then you should buy it and find out. I must thank Forge Books Macmillan Netgalley and Edelweiss for giving me an advace copy and I need to thank Hendricks for writing it.
Narrated by Jay Snyder, is a thrilling continuation of Derek Harrington's journey into the world of domestic terrorism. Packed with action and suspense, this audiobook keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Jay Snyder's narration adds depth to the characters, particularly Derek, making for a captivating listening experience. As Derek faces off against the domestic terrorist group Autumn's Tithe, the stakes are higher than ever, leading to a gripping showdown that will leave you breathless. With its riveting plot and stellar narration, "The Infiltrator" is a must-listen for fans of suspenseful thrillers.
A very special thanks to Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for the ALC.
This book has cemented Derek Harrington as one of my all time favorite characters ever. He is a truly good person. Of course, he is not without flaws, continuing to struggle with using alcohol as a cooping mechanism, control his rage, and overall manage his PTSD. However, he is trying so hard to be better for his family, and he shows empathy and compassion to those who lost their lives as a result of his operation when many others do not. And my favorite part of his character, he completely and totally detests FBI politics and has no problems displaying such disdain to his higherups. Derek is seriously amazing! The other characters were also great. I loved the team that Derek got to work, and I did really enjoy that we got Sarah’s point of view. Of course, the action in this book was also fantastic. I need a movie made of this because the scenes were so cinematic! I will say that for me there was a bit of an overload of technical information on the weapons/tools, but I know some will love it. Overall, I highly recommend this book!
Thank you Forge and Netgalley for the free advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Man, did I enjoy this propulsive and emotional book. With his family in a safe house under constant guard and a ruthless enemy drawing closer, former Marine officer and survival training instructor Derek Harrington is primed for a fight. T.R. Hendricks’s The Infiltrator deftly balances breathless action with impassioned family drama while taking readers inside both the FBI and the domestic terrorist organization determined to bring it down. This fierce, full-on thriller will stay with me for a long time.
The 2nd book after his debut novel "The Instructor", this one picks right up where the previous one ended. Full of action and more characters. What impressed me the most is that the author mentions in his acknowledgments that the bulk of the rough draft for this book was written while he was in the VA receiving treatment for a severe case of PTSD. Writing was cathartic for him. This book was fantastic.
I believe this is the first I’ve read by this author…but it will not be the last! Phenomenal, action packed, biting your nails, hanging on the edge of your seat kind of book! So, I absolutely loved it!!
Derrick is a special agent. He’s got skills that I’d guess only 1% of the population have…he’s highly trained (in staying alive)….and, he’s a remarkable sniper!
That being said, he’s found his way back to trouble…as a matter of fact, he’s right in the heart of it! He’s not worried for himself, but he IS worried for his family. His ex-wife and son, who he loves very much…
His main goal through all of his exploits is to keep them SAFE!
When he finds himself in the hills of Kentucky, fighting against the unknown, well…I’m offering up prayers for him. It was that scary…. 😮
I did not realize that his was book #2, which means the author did a great job in continuing the series! I’m hoping that there will be a book #3!
Thanks to #NetGalley and #MacmillanAudio for an ARC of the audiobook which will be released shortly, on 4/23/24!
#TheInfiltrator (Derrick Harrington #2) by #TRHendricks and narrated wonderfully by #JaySnyder.

i liked his first in the series but this one started in such mess left it. too many army, weapons details, too many characters, taking for sure that we read the first in the series. a mess
After 8 weeks, Derek was back in the woods gathering intel on Autumn’s Tithe. The cult turn domestic terrorist group he stumbled upon prior. First, he caught up to them in northwestern Pennsylvania near Allegheny National Forest, then a second time where no shots were fired, then at a location near Pennsylvania and West Virginia border. Three times Derek found them and stalled plans. Four times if you count upstate New York. Autumn’s Tithe was getting so sophisticated that they deterred from Marshal’s original plans of attack the United States once a year to Sarah or Hanna’s strategy of hitting targets ASAP. Due to Derek’s success, Jason and Rob, Gus FBI handlers were moving up the ladder: Jason was now the leadership element’s point man in the field and Rob had been promoted to Assistant Special Agent in charge of the entire task force. When Derek notices the three vehicle caravan, he calls it in, the Calvary dispose of the box truck with a hellfire missile. All three vehicles destroyed. Twelve casualties. Derek is struggling mentally with having to call a drone strike on American soil. Doesn’t know why he feels bad. The Quick Reaction Force and Extraction team, QRF-E for short, is a four man team that is there in a support role in case Derek needs them. It’s lead by Chief Drysdale, followed by team members, Brian Ortega, Angelica Ortiz, and Aaron Gerbowski. New SAC. Tedesco is out after having surgery. His temporary boss is Special Agent Samuel Liu. Kellen Pugh aka “The Copperhead” is a sniper for the cause. His spotter, Frank Neville, is the only one that keeps him from shooting at Derek and the rest of the FBI. Kellen broke Franks sternum and crushed his larynx when Neville told Sarah about Pugh wanting to shoot Derek when unauthorized out in the field. Sarah kicked Kellen out of camp for 72-hours until he was needed. Daniel is a guy Sarah is in contact with due to his contacts and connections throughout every agency in the U.S. Federal system. Daniel informed Sarah that her contemporaries are not happy with her and there are other contingencies in place due to the failures that Sarah is overlooking. If so, not good for Sarah and her future. Sarah to save her hide and get some grace, explains her new plan. One that moves away from Marshal’s manifesto and involves using the photo Frank took of Derek and of someone dying of leukemia. They also want to identify other agents in order to back their way into this. For now, the heat is off and Daniel is intrigued. Willing to take it to his boss, a woman who is of authority, apart of the network they belong to; Sarah did leave some of the operational details to prevent them from replacing her. Derek is more than skeptical of the new SAC, Sam Liu, and by days in, doesn’t hold his contempt well. Sam is a political hack that is using the op to advance his career. Much different than the guy he replaced. Derek and his family are placed in Fishers, Indiana. Northeast of Indianapolis. Michael has PTSD over what happened in Upstate New York. He is having a hard time adjusting and settling back in after everything that happened. AL and Maureen are the FBI handlers that watch over Derek and His family. They are a couple who met at the farm and served together. Both have taken to DH, his dad, Kim, and especially Michael. Daniel calls Sarah to inform her he has a job for the Copperhead. It will get her back in the good graces of the network. Pugh sniped an NCO Reserve from Grissom Joint Air Reserve Base, Corporal Jacob Leach and his wife Bernice. They used a text relaying to Jacob that payment had been put in their mailbox. While performing a training exercise with his QRF-E, the Black Hawk the were in blew one of it’s engines and crashed into the Mississinewa Lake. Derek, Drysdale, and another crew member jump. One of the pilots eject. Gerbowski rescues the other pilot almost costing him his life in return. They all made it except the Mercury Red 4 crew member. The QRF-E are each getting honored the FBI’s Shield of Bravery for their actions post-accident. But won’t be made public until the team and its ops are unclassified. Gerbowski did some digging and put two-and-two together. The couple (Leach and his wife) shot in their driveway. The husband an Army Reserve who just happened to work maintenance on Mercury Red 4 and alter logs to get that chopper to be used for the exercise. He, Derek, and Drysdale link it to Sarah and Autumn’s Tithe. They have potentially been compromised. Jason and Rob finish what Aaron had started. They searched his home and found a hard drive that contained an encrypt messages in the form of porn. They were location sites and discord chat rooms with Jacob being associated with several extremists groups who recruited military personnel. This lead to the locations of several meeting points. Jason and Rob wanted to set up synchronized raids. The church in Craig County, Virginia, was the place Jason thought he would get the most intel. When the Virginia State Police arrived, before they could breach the church, it exploded. Halting the other operations at the other locations. Daniel informs Sarah that she is to handle the material personally in Arizona. She will also be given a new sniper. Sarah’s new sniper is a guy named Dwight. Goes by “Deep.” They meet some arm dealers from Venezuela who work with Sarah’s bosses. Deep initiates that there is trouble. They kill the Hispanics without certain that there was a double turn. Kyle, a guy down for the cause that was with Sarah, questions if Deep is who he really is considering the ramifications of the fallout over what just happened. There is a guy named Pat Graelish. He is dying of leukemia. He has been moved to UVA Medical Center. Liu and Rob leave to meet him. Sam personally wanted to do the interview after being upset with Jason’s failed raid in West Virginia at the church. Pat wants to make a deal. Get his niece Holly out and he would share Autum Tithe’s location with them; a horse ranch, in the Southern part of Kentucky close to the Tennessee border. Near The Daniel Boone National Forest. Liu wants Derek in the woods in 48-hours. Derek has to check seventeen probable locations. Thirteen of them drones can’t get to due to the trees. After twenty three days in the forest in Kentucky, at marker twelve, he locates Saddle Oaks Horse Ranch. Essentially finding Autumn Tithe’s last camp. Liu is running the operation himself. Instead of going in at night, to their advantage, he wants to go in broad daylight. Not ideal. Pugh, using the oncoming raid party, sniped and killed Kyle and Delores. Blamed it on the authorities and has taken command. Derek saw the shots. Tries to abort. Liu overrides him. He wants the op to keep going in light of there being snipers. Deep, Pugh, and other contingencies take out three Black Hawks and killed the members of the MRT team. The four MRAP’s are taken out by RPG’s and contact gunfire. Commander Hershel rendered combat ineffective. Liu tries to stay in control, but Hershel tells him to STFU and deters to Derek instead for help how to escape. As the FBI makes a counter attack, Aaron Getbowski is sniped and killed. Next Drysdsyle is shot in the abdomen and severs his spine, instantly paralyzing him from the waist down. After the fight, it’s utter chaos. Ortega took out the four remaining assailants in the bunker. Sprigs, the remaining Apache pilot was vital in laying down cover fire and leveling the playing field with his missiles. Liu, in a desperate attempt to save his career is blaming Derek for what happened instead of his bad decisions and reckless plan. Liu refuses to send reinforcement's to help Derek from Pugh and Deep. Fortunately for Derek, the snipers make a move. Deep goes after Derek and Harrington stabs him in the gut after hitting him with a grenade and slamming a fishhook in his left eye. Pugh leaves Deep crying in the woods and Derek escapes. Jason tells Derek about the Stinger mussels and infrared-defeating ponchos. Autumn Tithe set a trap and the FBI played right into their hand. Liu tried to rebuke Derek and blame him for what happened, Harrington almost attacked him if it wasn’t for Jason or Rob. Daniel called Sarah twice. The first time, he was excited about the hell they brought on the FBI. The second, he was pissed when they found out about all the families and children who had died. It was bad for their cause. Optics mattered. Pugh returned. Sarah questioned him. Kellen blamed Kyle then Derek for massacre. Not including the information that he killed Kyle and then ordered for the people to stay in the basement instead of escaping through the Minecraft. Sarah plans to kill Derek herself. 64 civilians died in the raid. 12 were kids under the age of ten. An additional 27 members of the HRT team, FBI SWAT, and the Army National Guard lost their lives. Seventeen have been wounded. Five detained. The Attorney General Anthony Clement, FBI Director Sellsbee is next after the latest botched FBI mission. Pay Graelish, played his part by lying to Liu and setting Sarah’s plan into motion to ambush the FBI and died a happy man. Pennsylvania Senator, Eleanor McCullagh is the mew Attorney General eight weeks later. Derek’s dad is dying. He is in the last leg of hospice. Derek is struggling with everything that has happened. The nightmares are strong. Since the debacle in Kentucky, Liu kept trying to blame others for what happened. The evidence didn’t match. His career is in jeopardy. A detainee broke and gave Jason and Rob details of what happened prior and during the raid. On top of the forensic evidence, all signs blame Pugh for the civilian deaths. Deeps’ body hasn’t been found. Derek wants to after Pugh for what happened. For killing those people for the “cause.” Sarah and six others are in the process of attacking Derek’s house. Maureen is preparing dinner, Kim is upstairs with Stanley, Michael is in his room. Derek is across the street with Al having a fire pit session during this time. Maureen hits Andrew with a hot frying pan in the arm and face, then kicks him in the chest. She shoots Eric five times in the chest and face as he entered via the side of the house. Maureen is shot in the stomach and leg by Frank. Derek shoots Rick in the arm and head killing him while Al renders cover. Derek shoots Phyllis in the spine and back of her head as he enters his home. Maureen recovers and shoots Frank in the neck then the head as he is firing on Derek in the living room. While Sarah holds his family hostage, Derek throws his shot gun. Sarah distracted telling Derek that she is going to make him bed while she kills his family, Stanley picks up the gun and shoots Sarah’s legs off saving his family. Sarah shoots Derek’s dad, killing him. Kim attacks Sarah as she did knocking her unconscious. Maureen shoots Andrew in his jaw as he recovered from the burning pan to the face from earlier. Stanley tells Derek, “You’re a good man. Better than me.” As he took his last breath. Derek wants to save Sarah as Kim pleads for him to kill her. DC knows they need her alive to get information out of her. Al and Pugh get in a gun fight until Kellen shoots him in the shoulder. As cops arrive Pugh picks them off. Shooting the first five officers. He then steals Al’s gun when Derek appears. Once the cops started giving heavy fire, Kellen takes off in the van. Derek and Kellen get into a car duel that eventually leads to DH getting shot at on his right side but eventually being able to shoot Pugh right back tire causing a crash; DC gives chase. They end up at the hidden cemetery and brawl it out. DH gets the better of it, stabbing Pugh in the leg with a broken piece of a gravestone then once down, got the another granite gravestone and smashing Kellen in the face with force, killing him. As Derek recovers, He decides it’s best to let Kim and Michael go for their own protection. They will move outside of the country using methods outside of the Agency to keep them safe. Not even Derek will know where they are at. Al and Maureen once healed will meet up with them, train them, prepare them just in case. DH loves his family but after the last two events, this is what’s for the best. Not only to keep them safe but now to go on the offensive. He plans to hunt every one of Autumn Tithe’s members down. To eradicate. He no longer has to worry about justice. Now it’s about revenge. Sarah is in an induced coma. Once she recovers, his journey starts with her.
All I have to say, is this series should be a movie and I cannot wait for the third book. Brilliant from every angle. Derek Harrington is the man!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Absolutely spectacular second book by TR! Derek is back! More fierce than ever and ready for action. I loved this sequel to the first book. It had great character development, amazing action, real life feelings, etc.
I cannot wait to learn more about what Derek has in store for us. Please!
Last year's The Instructor, was one of my more favorite debuts. When I heard about The Infiltrator, I knew I would be reading it. I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy from NetGalley to read and review.
The book picks up soon after the events of The Instructor. Autumn's Tithe is still a problem and Derek is hot on their trail. He has the assistance of the FBI in his hunt and is working with a team to find the camps and locations of Autumn's Tithe and neutralize them before any terrorist attacks can be performed.
There were a number of new characters in this book and all of them are written well. Agent Liu is as terrible as you want him to be. He plays his part well.
I enjoy novels that have characters I can get behind. The protaganist is not without his flaws and that is a good thing. While I cannot relate to anything that Derek has done or gone through except being outdoors, he and his team are likable. You root for them. You feel pain with them.
I also enjoy a great action scene and this book has a couple. Once in them, you are not putting down the book until there is a resolution. The way they are written force you to keep going. You mst know what happens. Good and bad, you need to know. They are also written from different vantage points and there is a little repetition to allow you to understand what is happening and that a new viewpoint is being introduced. It gives you more information on the action and takes you in further.
I eagerly anticipated this novel and was not disappointed. T.R Hendricks delivers an exceptional story once again.
✨REVIEW: Thank you @netgalley and @readtrhendricks for this eARC audiobook! After listening to “The Instructor” last year, I knew I needed more of Derek’s story. This one did not disappoint! This action packed story had me wanted to speed listen just to see what would happen next! I finished this audiobook in one single day because I couldn’t help myself. I loved following Derek Harrington on yet another journey of nonstop thrill, however, this was one that I wish I had the physical copy to refer to. The beginning with all the character names and changes in perspective really confused me at first. I would’ve liked to have been able to flip back easily to cross check my understanding. In the end, I loved the story, but would’ve preferred a physical copy this time around!
✨PROS: action packed!!
🚨WARNING: Potential triggers include military experiences including battle, weaponry, gore, death, death of children
What a book! Derek Harrington is the real deal! So hard to put down, will Derek find a way to stop AT once and for all and protect his family in the process? T.R. Hendricks outdid himself once again! Highly recommended
1st time reading T.R. Hendricks and The Infiltrator was a really great book. Great cast of characters, plenty of action scenes, and of course the evil government antagonist. Pretty sure there will be a follow up, I guess I'll have to wait, so I might have to check out the 1st book in the series. Thanks to Forge Books Macmillan and Netgalley for giving me an ARC of the book and I highly recommend buying/reading.
A brilliant page turner! T.R Hendricks does it again. I couldn’t stop reading, the tactics, the chaos, heartbreak and blood. 5 out of 5 stars all day long!
I came across this group, Military Thriller Book Group, about two years ago and thought that after being made aware of a slew of great authors and building a TBR (To Be Read) pile of books, if they were physical copies would be leaning dangerously to one side or another. Thanks to Steve Lepper and the many authors who post their books in this group.
One of the authors that I was turned onto was T.R. Hendrickson and this is my review of the second of his books, The Infiltrator.
Hendricks balances the shocking and upsetting aspects of the novel against the investigation into Autumn’s Tithe, Derek, and his team’s training, as well as his interactions with his family. The action sequences are superb. While I wasn’t quite 100 percent satisfied with the ending, it left the door open for another book, which is something to look forward to.

He has the assistance of the FBI in his hunt and is working with a team to find the camps and locations of Autumn's Tithe and neutralize them before any terrorist attacks can be performed. The Infiltrator is action-packed right out of the gates. It is filled with interesting characters and twists I couldn’t predict! I can easily see how people get sucked right into this series. It plays out like an action movie!
You can tell a lot of care was put into getting the details right. The author has a military background and it made the story come to life. The descriptions were plentiful and easy to comprehend. I found myself truly sucked into this world. The book is a nice balance of story and action. I’m intrigued by the government conspirators' involvement with Autumn’s Tithe. Very well written, the pace kept me up way past my bedtime. My only disappointment is now I have to wait even longer for book three.
As such I am giving this book a solid four stars out of five and believe that this book would be a definite favourite for those readers who enjoy FBI-related novels and militia conspiracy novels.
As with all my literary reviews, these are a few of my five cents worth.
Last year after reading some glowing reviews about the author and his debut novel I’ve read the first one and simply blown by his writings especially his deep knowledge regarding Survival and combat. Personally I’m not a big fan of the subgenre where combat happens within America as it always loaded with Politics and stuff which kind of water down the essence of the novel. But this was broken for me by John Gilstrap with his Jonathan Grave series after that Derek Harrington who upped the antics in this genre for me.
After derailing the major plan by Autumn’s Tithe a cult run by an enigmatic figure who wants to ignite a civil war in America. Derek was recruited by FBI to find and destroy the remnants of the cult with his special set of skills. Unlike the last time Derek was equipped with cutting edge technology and a dedicated team of ex-soldiers to protect him and finish the job once for all and due to the events of the previous novel he is also trying to mend ways with his family. Meanwhile Tithe cult was pushed to the extreme because of the constant rolling up of their members and resources still their reach is far and wide within US government which makes them to plan a final blowback which may change the life of Derek and US in general.
First of all this novel was big in everything compared to previous one with bloody violence filled with shootouts, explosions and gruesome deaths. Other than the protagonist some of the supporting characters like Derek’s team members as well as the bodyguard team that protects his family plays a huge role in this novel. For gear lovers like me this novel was filled with some of the latest tech that doesn’t go overboard and make him invincible but makes his life easier in the field with believability and it’s fun to read those chapters. This novel also features some of the best antagonists with their own twisted ideologies and proper incentive to make the lives of Derek and his family deadlier and plays toe to toe with US Government and gave one of the bloodiest battle to it. So if you’re a fan of the survival thriller genre interposed with combat and emotion give this novel a try. Thanks for reading this review so far and have a great weekend.
Unrelenting. It’s more than a page turner. It’s the written equivalent of throwing your muscle car into gear and setting a cinder-block on the accelerator pedal. Sit down, strap in, and hang on.
THE INFILTRATOR is everything you expect in the military genre – an attention to detail in weapons, tactics, procedures – and everything you need in a thriller. Derek Harrington is everything you want in a modern protagonist; capable and flawed, doggedly pursuing a noble quest while trying his level best to balance his personal sense of honor with the needs of his family. Harrington is a protagonist so many of us can relate to – one who wants to be the father he needs to be for his son, and with some effort, perhaps reunite with his ex-wife. While the action is tactile and raw, it’s the human elements of Harrington that make him so relatable, so real, and is sure to appeal to those who have served in the last two decades.
In that spirit, while it’s written for a male target audience, it’s utterly relatable to anyone who loves someone who served. It’s a glimpse behind the curtain of what most of us can’t talk about. Here is the sublime beauty of this story. It’s so much more than what is on the page. On one level, it’s an action oriented military thriller that gets the details right. On another, it’s a cautionary tale of where we are as a nation that spares no one and does not take sides. Deeper still, it’s a tale of redemption, of a former Marine learning to vanquish his inner demons and live again.
THE INFILTRATOR is the kind of story that leaves you wanting more, eagerly awaiting the next installment. Be prepared for that and consider yourself warned. It will grab you by the windpipe on page one and won’t let go till the end. Clear your schedule, grab some beef-jerky, a case of water, and a comfortable chair. It’s going to be a long night.
This book is the second in the Derek Harrington series, and starts up what appears to be about a year after the end of the last book, with Harrington leading a team while working for the FBI, to dismantle what’s left of the Autumn’s Tithe terrorist group, while also trying to help his family recover from the trauma of their previous kidnapping.
This book left me feeling very underwhelmed. It felt like a book that was written because the author had to, and not because he had a good story to write. The book introduced a lot of new characters, most of which are poorly developed, and doesn’t really have an arc, or a resolution. At the end I found myself super annoyed that the publisher thought this book had the same value as something like The Gray Man, Orphan X, or The Terminal List. Spoiler Alert: if it was free, I still don’t think it’s worth your time.
The sad part is I went into this book with high hopes, hoping that the writer evolved and would be on his way to becoming an author I look forward to reading, because the first book showed promise. Instead he became an author I will probably choose to avoid in the future. Hopefully his next book is published once it’s polished and perfect, not whatever is done by a date on a calendar.
Book Review – The Infiltrator – T. R. Hendricks Author T. R. (Tim) Hendricks’ action adventure “The Infiltrator” was another wild and daring thriller. Protagonist Derek Harrington – former Marine and survival expert – returns in this second installment, and teams up with a female ex-FBI agent to take on a vicious domestic terrorist group hidden in the remote backwoods of Kentucky’s Daniel Boone National Forest. The Infiltrator is fast moving, high octane, authentic, and super actionable. The phrase ‘violence of action’ is prevalent in this action thriller. The book is adrenaline fueled to keep the reader engaged and highly alert. Hendricks’ military knowledge of fighting tactics and realistic combat scenarios was vivid and genuine. The storyline, though fiction, could easily be true or could happen. That’s why this narrative was such a good read. It was an exciting, intense, suspenseful, and an expressive sequel to “The Instructor” – Hendricks’ debut novel. Hendricks is now batting a thousand with ‘back-to-back’ great action thrillers and I now can proudly claim him as my ‘brother-from-another-mother.” I highly recommend reading both his books or listening to Jay Snyder’s audiobook narration. Job well done, ‘Brother’!
Book #2. One year after being engaged to train soldiers to wage domestic terrorism, retired Marine and SERE instructor Derek Harrington stops them (read The Instructor). Here he is selected to lead an FBI team to finish off the remainder of the Autumn’s Tithe terrorist group. Accumulating intelligence suggests the group is holed up in a camp deep in the Kentucky wilderness, so Derek and his team plan a final solution; however, things go very badly as the team has been lured there by ex-FBI Special Agent Hannah Kittle (known as Sarah), who has vengeance against Derek and his family as her primary motivation. The ego of the officer above Derek countermands Derek's on-site orders, exacerbating losses on both sides, fomenting additional hatred. Non-stop and escalating action throughout.
In the book The Infiltrator, author T. R. Hendricks continues his Derek Harrington series. Harrington is a retired Marine Recon and SERE instructor. He is making a living training survival groups and is the tip of the FBI’s spear to eradicate a domestic terrorist group. After several successful operations, Harrington and his group believe they are about to bring the terrorist group down. But they are not prepared for what is about to happen. Will the team survive? And will Harrington complete his mission while keeping his family safe? I would highly recommend this book and the series. The audio-book narration was very good. I received a copy of this audio-book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first exposure to this author and I was not disappointed. This is a wonderfully crafted action-packed story with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat right to the last page. His characters are well developed and the action is non-stop. The story grabs you from the first page and the many twists and turns in the story make it a real page turner that makes it hard to put the book down. Don’t start reading it if you are not prepared to stay up all night!
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio who provided me with a copy of this book. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
The Infiltrator is book #2 of the seres that puts the main character, Derek, a survival expert + marine, against a fictitious domestic terrorism group. This book is packed with action from the get-go. My only complaint is there was a bit of confusion how this book serves as a follow-up to the first book in the series, that is probably on my failing memory more so than on the author. I just couldn't recall in enough detail how the last one ended... Nonetheless, this intense novel, complete with well-crafted characters and scenes that make this a classic thriller, makes me stoked for the next installment of Derek Harrington!.
Mr. Hendrick's power as a writer comes from his determination to put ink on paper. Given time he may learn rhythm and eloquence. As noted elsewhere, the battle scenes are engaging if a bit full of the same kind of misses. The scenes of meetings are as painful as those endured in real life. That may be considered good writing in some quarters. For me, it is writing for the delete key. The final decision about a writer's work is whether the reader will be back. I intend to have another of Hendrick's books at the ready should I ever fly again or have to wait in an Emergency Room.
T.R. Hendricks has emerged as a top-tier thriller writer. I enjoyed The Instructor and especially The Infiltrator. Hendricks is the best I've seen at capturing The Global War on Terror Veteran Mentality. As a GWOT Veteran, we face unique challenges that he displays well with his protagonist Derek Harrington. Derek faces challenges on the battlefield as well as adjusting to contemporary society. Through all his trials and tribulations Derek maintains a set of core values that sees him through. Hendricks is one hell of a storyteller. Well Done! I'm a fan!
Thank you to the publisher, author and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I have to admit I really wanted to like this book, but frankly, I think I am a bit burnt out on the military superhero type books. The story isn't bad and I found myself rooting for the protagonist, but I just couldn't bring myself to get invested in the book. I feel bad trudging through the last 100 pages or so. I think this was a case of me being the problem more than the author. 3-stars
