Tristina starts her school day out by fighting with her mother over her ripped jeans. She storms out of her house, into the rain, and right into Seth's car. Final stop, a vampire conclave inside the Arctic Circle. Not your typical school day! A love triangle between humans and vampires gets hot enough to melt the glaciers.
First of all, I love vampire books. Having said that, this is NOT a vampire book IMHO.
Tristina is a naïve 16 year old girl, not especially pretty and has to wear glasses in order to see (how cliché is that?). After an argument with her Mother, she is drugged, kidnapped and whisked away to a foreign place to be given to the Vampire Prince.
But, before she can be given to him, she has to earn the right (?) by fighting another girl. The loser will either be fed to the ghouls or lose a hand or eye. Her foe, Theda, gives Tristina advice on how to win and offers her eye as a sacrifice.
This book is more a mix of the King Arthur legend, complete with Sir Lancelot and Guinevere, and a typical European monarchy than a vampire tale. There is very little mention of anything related to vampires and a ton of things about an archaic monarchy, complete with tortuous traditions and a whipping boy.
Tristina seems to fall into this whole kidnapping thing without a backward glance to her former life. The Prince is a weird, perverted male, complete with a mysterious mask that is never removed, even for the supposed love of his life during their lovemaking.
And, believe me, there is plenty of sex. This is definitely not a YA book. Most of the book is devoted to bedroom antics with very graphic descriptions. I think that I prefer the sparkly vampires of Twilight, thank you very much!
Also, this book needs some serious proofreading and editing. The formatting is off, there are way too many autocorrect errors and the punctuation is painful. There are also some glaring errors in the storyline; the book is set in the Arctic Circle, then suddenly Tristina is talking about being in Antarctica!
A great story, I was enchanted and on the edge of my seat! Who doesn’t want to be a vampire princess is the first thing you think when you look at the cover. Open the book and your caught! You don’t put it down till the last drop of ink oozes out and you heave a sigh of.. relief? No, you want more now!
I have to be honest: I didn't care for this novel at all. Aside from the mistakes in grammar and typos--there were a lot--the characters simply didn't ring true to me. We have Tristina, glasses and all even though she's hawt (cliche #1, teenage girls with glasses who are, in reality, smoking hawt) who, after having argued with her mother over something trivial as all teenage girls seemingly do (and I know they don't) is kidnapped, drugged, and whisked away to a vampire kingdom.
Tristina learns about vampires and their ways, and, oh, did I mention that she has a choice between two suitors? Yes, cliche number two, two hot dudes who'll vie for her hand after having their way with her. Okay, I'm no prude, but this ain't a YA book as advertised. Oliver is more likeable as a potential husband, while the Prince comes across as a bit of a mask fetish pervert, to be honest. Sex is fine if it's done right in a YA book and if it's consensual. Here, it's pretty graphic, which really didn't titillate me or contribute a whole lot to the narrative.
King? Queen? They drop in at the wedding, but there's little to no mention of them beforehand. Sorry, but even a king or queen would want to vet a potential in-law. Not here, though. It's all hunky-dory, and welcome to the Underworld!
What really bothered me was the editing and formatting, mainly because it was absent for much of the novel. I can forgive a few mistakes here and there because I've made them myself. It happens. But this novel was rife with them, seemingly on every page. After a while it just got to be too much.
Finally, I simply didn't care for any of the characters. Tristina did exhibit some growth as a young woman thrust into a very strange situation, but she didn't captivate me. Neither did any of the other characters. I know there are two more novels in the trilogy, but I doubt I'll read them. This book had potential, but due to the editing and the lack of (IMO) character development, I can't really recommend this novel, although others may enjoy it.
This book is intense. It is not your ordinary vampire story, it is so much more. Tristina is young, impulsive and doesn't have sense enough to keep her mouth shut. The Prince is arrogant and can be cruel, but also loving when it comes to Tristina. He always wears a mask and no one ever sees his face, except for his birth family. One thing I would have liked to know was after everything, did Tristina ever get to actually see her Prince? I was either laughing with Tristina and her BFF or on the edge of my seat, chewing my nails wondering what was going to happen next. There are even monsters, portals, betrayal and political intrigue to spice it up. I was impressed with the story. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
This is the first book that I have read by P Mattern and it knocked my socks off! She takes you to this wonderful imaginary very cold world, filled with vampires, humans and some of the strangest creatures I’ve ever read about. You cannot put it down. I read it in one setting. There is a great love story with Tristina, Oliver and the Vampire Prince. The details are amazing and can stand up to any scruinity. She has fleshed out all the amazing characters to the point that you feel like you know them all personally or that you are right there with them. I can’t really describe how good this book is. You have to see for yourself. WTG P. Mattern.
Although I have followed this author for a while, this is the first book of hers, I have read. Boy have I been missing out! The story draws you in and keeps you reading. Imagine, having a fight with your mother, only to find out things are not as they seem. And, being a teenager, you feel your life is over, it's too messed up. Then to be abducted, and forced to fight for your life, so you might become the new vampire princess. That is only the beginning of this fantastic read!!
Love, Hate, Cry, Mystery, Romance 😉 what all could you want in a book at one time right... Reading this gave me so many different emotions for the princess and the journey she faces I felt so drawn in the pages just couldn't flip fast enough. I love the way the characters are made to make you feel as though you are right there with them and I can't wait to get ahold of the next edition of the series ❤️
This is the start of an absolutely fantastic series... Love, lies, kidnapping and sex..... The vampire Prince is to choose his wife..... Tristina has many issues to deal with then she meets Oliver. Then between the Prince and Oliver a beautiful relationship begins but should it this is brilliant and the end is fantastic. Can't wait to read the next book
It was a good read - really promising, but some mistakes and misspellings took away some of my pleasure. Tristina is a young girl, protagonist, she is vicious and wants to do everything her way. She was kidnaped and took away from her life. She was taken to vampire enclave. What will happen to her? She fell in love, but how can she love two men? Will that be possible?
Could not have asked for a more Vampiric start to a trilogy
P. Mattern is a best selling award winner to the horror and the paranormal. This is one is her greats. She brings in revelant scenery, characters and descbises everything leaving you nothing to wonder about except when the next book will be released! A must read for all genres.
P.Mattern , this book is absolutely divine loved it so much . The Princess how she became to love the Prince and Oliver her undying love for him . It just melted my heart .
Patricia always does amazing. And her vampire novels are the best. Knowing that Tristina is kidnapped and forced to fight for her life and to be mated to the vampire Prince, makes for a excellent read
I really enjoyed reading this imaginative story. Tris is a stronger person then I am when it came the barbaric ways of life. I probably wouldn't have lastly long with my vocal outrage.
Nice story that is twisted at first and then turns out into romance and a happy ending. Good characters, unique story, some twists, action, betrayal and love. Good read but has some spelling errors.
This story had a very interesting concept surrounding vampires, one that I rather enjoyed. I really hope that there will be more to this story in a second book
Tristina's day just gets worse and worse. I do love her story with the Prince and Oliver. She kind of bumbles her way through her new way of life, but it all turns out well in the end.
I freaking love this book. Made my heart race. Was so hard to put it down but I'm so happy i read it. One of my dream books that i finally crossed off my list. I do reccomed it
Title: The Vampire Princess Author: P. Mattern Genre: YA/NA Paranormal Romance Format: Ebook Pages: 231 Rating: 4 Heat: 4
Thoughts: I liked the characters and the world but Tristina just seems too accepting of what she was put through. And she was 16 when she was first taken so I wasn’t expecting the sex but once I finally got past that it was an interesting story and I hope there’s another book. The love triangle was somewhat hard for me to see. I totally understood the pull towards Oliver but we never really get to truly know the Vampire Prince which made it a bit more difficult. Overall it was a good story with intrigue, suspense and a fascinating world that I would love to revisit. I hope there are more books, there was a tidbit of info that I would love to find out about. All I can say is that it involves Oliver and a prophecy (I’m evil, I know lol). I hope you chose to find out for yourself by snagging a copy!
Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work and chose to write a review.
I thought the story was very beautifully written. It is told from a teenager's perspective and she does come across as a wishy washy character. She matures by leaps and bounds throughout this story which changes how you view her. This tale encompasses devotion, love, loss and acceptance. This is the first I've ever read from this author. So I didn't know what to expect. The love triangle was understandable, but made me sad. I found the ending sad as well. The world that was created was stunning. I hated though how okay the main character was with the olden ways... not sure I'd be able to forgive so easily even releasing how very little of a choice she had. I felt like the pace and flow were very hindered by the very poorly done job of editing. My attention kept stumbling over the wrong words, spelling, spacing and punctuation. Normally these do not matter one wit to me, but these mistakes were near constant. It's such a shame as it takes away from the beauty of the book and makes me hesitate to read another book by this author.
