I am the Queen of the Werewolf Territory, a place that has always been my sanctuary, and yet I must leave my people if I am to save them.
Our world is falling apart, and I must take the task my father set to me, and heal the Veil that protects us all.
A deadly journey lies ahead of me, and no one can know that I am leaving—too many would steal the crown with me gone. With a small, secret contingent I go across the water to the human realm, a land I’ve never set foot on to find the gemstone that is the key to our salvation.
If only that were my single crux. My heart is torn between the man I am hunting down, a man who stole my heart along with a jewel he had no right to take, and the man who stands at my side.
One human with abilities he should not have. One vampire with a mouth that sets me on fire and leaves my body aching for more. Neither should be where I set my heart as a queen. And yet…I am drawn to them both.
I must keep my eyes on the literal prize…and I must not let my heart lead.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.
I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)
Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.
I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)
As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.
Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.
Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.
✨ Adult Fantasy Romance ✨ Paranormal Romance ✨ Shifters and Vampires ✨ Forced Proximity ✨ Reluctant Allies ✨ Touch Her and Die ✨ Bodyguard ✨ Prophecy
This is the 4th book in The Alpha Territories series but the 1st one about the Werewolf Queen's journey. It can absolutely be read as a standalone. Diana, Queen of the Werewolf Territory, is embarking on a secretive journey to the human lands to find the missing gem that is prophesized to save the Veil from destruction. She is torn between the man who stole the gem from her lands and the man who was sent to protect and help her in bringing it back to the Alpha Territories.
Ohh how I love Diana! We got a few glimpses of her in the previous books and I was so glad that she got her own story! She is a fierce and formidable queen who will do anything to help save her people, including being in close proximity to a vampire she despises. Raven is the right-hand of the general of the vampire army and spent most of his years in the human realm. He's also a smooth talker and charmer, which irritates Diana to no end. Their banter is downright delicious and I loved every interaction they had with each other! I was chomping at the bits for all the innuendos and the will they or won't they moments. 🥵
I also need to do a special shout-out to my girl Myrr. That old, batty seer who only ever thinks about food is my fave! She cracks me up with her obsession to eat all the foods and that she never seems to listen to anyone. She is a loose cannon yet great comedic relief in the story.
I absolutely can't wait for the next book and to see where Diana's journey goes next!
Thank you so much to the author for the advanced copy in return for my honest review.
Once again, the author did not disappoint!! The dual POVs of Raven and Diana added depth to the narrative, making it a captivating experience keeping me engaged with both of their troubles. Raven's perspective, in particular, stood out with its intensity and past.
The action-packed sequences and formidable creatures (Venators, demons and more) showcased the author's skill in crafting a vivid and enthralling world. The stakes were high, and the journey to heal the Veil was filled with challenges. The balance of supernatural elements and character dynamics kept me hooked. The author weaves a story that keeps you guessing and invested till the very end!!
Perfect for lovers who enjoy a thrilling fantasy with a perfect blend of action, romance, and supernatural. This is a must-read!! I loved how anyone can begin reading this book without having to read the first book in the series. But definitely check out, Taken by Fate if you haven’t already!
The next installment in a thrilling yet deadly adventure to save the world.
🌶️ 🌶️ spicy ♥️ fated mates 🧛 vampires 🐺 werewolves 😈 demons ⛰️ epic quest 🛌 one bed
Back in the Alpha territories *happy sigh*. Diana and Raven couldn’t be more different. Yet the mission sees them constantly in each other’s space, forced to work together for the greater good.
Diana is the queen of the wolves but she didn’t start out that way. She is an honorable and loyal queen but that doesn’t mean she can be seen as weak. This shapes her entire personality throughout her life and this book. She feels an intense pull to Raven, an annoying and infuriating vampire, that neither can seem to deny. Unfortunately, Diana has been burned before and sworn off love after her bitter betrayal. Now she has to travel towards the man who burned her with the man who draws her in like a moth to flame.
Honestly, sometimes Diana was annoying in her stubbornness. I understand why she reacts the way she does to Raven, but it still annoyed me lol. Also, her vehement determination to do things herself, without help, got old. While this fit perfectly into her characters personality I just wanted to swat the back of her head and tell her to get over it. She does learn and begin to grow as the book continues so there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Raven might say some off the wall comments but his heart is true. He has been through a lot as we discover throughout the book. This just makes him determined to protect Diana at all costs to fulfill her destiny. I liked Raven, a lot. His overall actions are always working towards the good of the group. He is intelligent and knows more about the world outside the wolf and vampire kingdoms thanks to his past.
The action, mystery, and tension are absolutely delicious! The secondary characters made it fun and emotional. Myrr is awesome! Nicholas is a quiet hero. The banter will keep you entertained and the adventure will keep you enthralled! Can’t wait to see what the next book will bring.
caged by fate is an enemies to lovers shifter/vamp romance with strong tension and adventure.
The dynamic between the MCs was fun to read and the banter was great. I really enjoyed Raven’s character.
the beginning of this one had me hooked and I was sure I was going to love it. Unfortunately, this didn’t keep me engaged, specifically at the end. I felt like there was a lot going on but instead of being engaging, it felt chaotic.
This book was a delight - I buddy read this with a friend and it made it even better hahaha. Caged by Fate is book 4 in the Alpha territories series, importantly, you don’t need to read books 1-3 in order to read this one. That being said, am I planning on going back and reading? Absolutely.I’m loving this take on the vamp/werewolf world, I feel like I’ve seen a wolf become a vamp but not the opposite, as it is in this book. The vibes were immaculate and made me think of Underworld a little bit.
Diana is such a strong character already but I still appreciated her growth over the progression of the story. She is definitely a grump type of character and one who needs to be in control so Raven is a nice contrast to this - playful, flirty, with an “I don’t give a care” type of attitude, I feel like their story is very opposites attract. That being said, we discover Raven’s true colours as the book goes on as well and he’s not what he seems. Their banter is fun, the tension super thick. This book is fire without spicing very far - there is some but I was actually surprised that things didn’t go further yet. I love the fact we get both Diana and Raven’s point of view, the latter is especially insightful when it comes to his character.
Absolutely expect to black out at some point while reading this and waking up to finding yourself almost if not entirely done, time became non existent to me and I just couldn’t put it down. Needless to say, I’m hooked and am very much looking forward to the sequel.
A huge thanks to the author for the chance to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.
This was my favorite book in the series so far. It's the first in the 'werewolf trilogy' within the overall 'Alpha Territories' series. This installment focuses on Diana, the Queen of the werewolves. She, two vampires (Nicholas of Southwind and Raven; each with special abilities) and Myrr, the oracle head into the human world in search of a stolen gem and the man who took it and Diana's heart so many years ago.
Men were fickle, they were liars and they would take as they pleased with no concern to a woman’s heart.
The push/pull between Diana and Raven throughout was entertaining. I look forward to seeing how their relationship progresses in the remaining two installments. Raven remembers an event from his past and with those memories comes a better understanding of his feelings for Diana. She remains cautious after her past dealings with Maverick.
the dynamic between diana & raven is so goooodd!! raven is such a shameless flirt & diana is so unbothered it’s been the best of time!! the switch in jealousy & possessiveness at the end is really doing it for me too!
Buddy reading for an ARC with a good friend?? Yes please! I mean if y’all ever get the chance to do so with a friend whose thoughts align with yours, would definitely say to do so because oh my gosh the back and forth reactions we had for this book!! I mean, I was already enjoying this read but holy heck did buddy reading just elevate the experience!
But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s focus on the book. While technically it falls as book four within the world of the Territories, Caged by Fate can be read as the start of its own series without having read the previous books (*ahem* which is what I may or may not have done 😇).
I mean, a paranormal romance with a werewolf queen as the main character?? Yes please!! We all know I love me a good shifter/paranormal romance read so this was a no brainer when it came to grabbing it to read 🙌🏻🙌🏻
🐺jaded wolf Queen 🐺playboy vampire 🐺quest 🐺dual POV 🐺knife to throat 🐺betrayed by first love 🐺violently protective boi 🐺bodyguard 🐺hella banter 🐺slowburn-ish (this is the first book folks, tis gotta build 🔥🔥)
I don’t know why I was so (delightfully) surprised by which being was the heartbreaker and which was the (only one in my opinion) love interest. Raven won me over from his very first words on the page. Like good god, that male had a sassy mouth on him! My immediate thoughts: oh this banter between the two characters is about to be DELIGHTFUL. And when I discovered the dual POV?? 😈😈😈
Honestly, Diana and Raven’s energy was vaguely grumpy/sunshine in a way: she was the grumpy with a kingdom to worry about and jaded view of the world after having her heart broken while he was the sassy sunshine that LOVED poking her buttons and provoking a reaction past the icy exterior she gives off to protect herself. A favorite dynamic to watch develop. I mean the sass? The banter? The inevitable flirting? *squeals and definitely kicked feet in the air while reading*
Not gonna lie, it felt I got sucked in somewhere between 30-70% where I could barely feel time passing, I was so invested in the story. Lyne and I jokingly said we blacked out. I mean, we were buddy reading and yet neither of us—even though we were experiencing it at different times—surfaced to react during that time frame. I’d say that says quite a lot about the book!
Side note: did I immediately watch Underworld: Evolution midway through reading while waiting for Lyne to catch up a bit because the wolf/vampire vibes were ✨immaculate✨?? Why yes, yes I did. I may have had to pause the book but that didn’t stop the craving for the vibes this book gave off.
Also, the most delightful character’s name was Kevin and I will not expand on that. Y’all will just have to read the book to meet him 🤭🤭
Now about the romance, this author did a phenomenal job of making the tension so darn good that you don’t even realize the spice doesn’t fully spice for this book. Not saying there’s nothing, just that there’s not everything. BUT what is given?? 😮💨🔥 I mean I FULLY support a slower burn for these two especially since this book is the first of (I think) another trilogy in the Territories. Gimme the slow burning goodness 🔥🔥
But also: SHANNON!!!! HOW DARE WITH THAT ENDING!! Ugh no one can say you don’t set up your semi-slow burning relationships well. I’m on Raven’s team when it comes to Maverick though 😈👊🏼👊🏼
Now if you’ve made it this far, I applaud you on traversing the chaos that was my thoughts and reactions for this read 🙈😂
Am I going to go back and read the initial trilogy while waiting in agony for the next book to release so I can continue this series?? Why yes, yes I will. Just because the sequel isn’t out, that doesn’t mean I have to keep away from the world Shannon has created when there’s three other books available to dive into 🥰
Many thanks to the author for sending such a beautiful PR package and a copy of the book to read and enjoy 🫶 All thoughts and opinions are my own.
With the end of Dom and Sienna’s trilogy, book 4 starts the trilogy romance between Queen Diana of the werewolves and Raven, the vampire Lord of Seattle. I’ll admit, Diana was not a character I liked from the earlier books- she’s mostly cold and distant except with her closest companions. Raven, however, is a flirtatious rogue who charms the reader pretty much every time he pops up- a real scene stealer.
Putting them together, however, is one dangerous cocktail. Sure, there is an attraction between them, but it’s more one of inconvenience than true hatred. Diana’s problem is her inability to know just when she’ll go into heat becomes a major stumbling block, and Raven has a secret, one that had him exiled long ago when Diana was just a toddler.
And what a secret it is when the reader is made privy to it.
Unfortunately, an attack has Diana giving her blood to Raven without them realizing her blood was one of the donations Raven had been given earlier… and a blood bond forms. Between this and her hormonal surges, Diana and Raven are constantly distracted from their mission: to find and drag the escapes human, Maverick. When he escaped from wolf territory years ago it was with a gemstone important to the safety of the wolves.
But when Maverick, seemingly cornered literally disappears, the stakes are raised even higher.
We get a lot of stuff thrown at us- demons, hell hounds, an island with a supernatural casino, dead saints who argue when unearthed from the grave, volcanoes and a stowaway that keeps everyone on their toes.
So why 3 stars? I love Raven’s character even with his secret, and I hate how cruelly Diana treats him. Sure, he loves pushing her buttons and hear her snarl, but the boy is going to have his hands full just dealing with her abandonment issues, let alone try to get her to like him.
Our side characters are fun- Gabe and Raph are likable, even if they are a couple of demons, and Nicholas, the young vampire we met in the previous story, has a large role (and a heck of a supernatural power). His character is a surprise for me because he’s nothing like I expected once you know more about him. I’m looking forward to having him around for the next two installments. But it feels like there is an inordinate amount of trouble following this group on their hunt for Maverick. Maybe a bit too much?
Shannon has done it again! She’s made me fall in love with another FMC!!
From the first trilogy in this universe, I wasn’t sure how Diana would turn out since she was the stoic and fierce Queen the entire trilogy. But, she’s turned out to be just as awesome as Sienna! I’m amazed to learn about her protective side and her emotional side in addition to the way she portrays herself as the Queen of the Werewolf Territory. As the first Queen ever, the stakes are higher than ever. She cannot fail, she cannot be seen as a weak leader and she cannot let any man boss her. I love her!
It was fun to see Raven out of his element and at the mercy of someone who doesn’t back down!🤣 Their banter had me giggling the entire time. The parallels with Dominic were just so good that I easily fell in love with their dynamic. Add in Nicholas and the Oracle, it made for a team created for entertainment out on a dangerous mission.
With powerful enemies, they need similarly powerful and resourceful allies. The adventure introduces more intriguing characters and someone I didn’t expect! That goes to show, this series is not done stunning me yet!!!
Special mention to Myrr for being the absolute best she can be and making this journey so much more enjoyable!!!! I need more of her!!
I’m so excited to see what the sequel is going to give us!!! Thank you so much to the author for sending me an ARC to review!
This was such a WILD ride! Action from the outset that doesn’t let up… in true Shannon style we are kept on the edge of our seats, not know what will come next!
I was so intrigued by Diana and her history in the last trilogy (Sienna’s story) that I was so thrilled to hear that she was getting her own story. Queen of the werewolves, the first ever and with so much to prove… She sets out on a voyage to claim back something which was stolen.
Let’s start with Diana. She is such a whole vibe! I love her strength, her tenacity and her strong sense of duty to her people. She also wants NOTHING to do with Raven - a charismatic and dashing vampire who is intense! Unfortunately she is sooooos stubborn - I kinda wanted to smack her upside the head and throw her at Raven! In a good way!!!!
I love Raven - his POV was brilliant. Because of his past he’s determined to protect Diana (even if she doesn’t need protecting!!) and is willing to go to extreme lengths to do so. Honestly these two have the best banter and fight so well… their dynamic is interesting and edge of your seat gripping at times (will they or won’t they?!)
The action, tension and pace of the book was fantastic and it’s definitely one to read!
A mid-series, main character change is always a worry for me...what if I don't like the new main character as much as the previous main character? Or what if the cast of secondary characters doesn't hit the mark for me or the story just doesn't have the same vibe as the previous books? Thankfully Caged by Fate, the fourth book in The Alpha Territories series, shifts character perspectives seamlessly while progressing ahead with the overall story arc.
Diana is the Queen of the Werewolf Territory but in order to heal the Veil that protects everyone, she must undertake a deadly journey into the human realm. Diana undertakes the journey with a small contingent, some werewolves, an always hungry seer and a couple of vampires. Amongst the vampires is Raven, who Diana cannot help but feel a connection to.
While this is the fourth book in the series, you can easily pick up this book as your first read and then backtrack over the previous three books. I love how Caged by Fate continues to build upon what occurred in the previous books without majorly spoiling Sienna's story arc (the FMC from the first three books). These books have all the paranormal creatures...vampires, werewolves, angels demons, dragons and more. I love reading about societies where everyone is forced to co-exist while also trying to avoid building tensions between the different territories.
I loved the dynamic between Diana and Raven. The build of their relationship throughout this book has me excited for books to come.
The Alpha Territories is a must read Romantasy series.
Thank you to Shannon Mayer for gifting me with an early copy in exchange for an honest review.
Mayer kicks off a new story in the Alpha Territories world that can be the starting place for new readers or the anticipated new chapter in Diana’s story, a character first met in Sienna and Dominic’s preceding trilogy. Diana, born a vampire, but turned into a werewolf, now rules the Werewolf Territory. When the consequences of a choice she made in the past becomes key to restoring the Veil and defeating the strange, evil entity that threatens them all, Diana must set out in secret to the human realm.
This gives Mayer not only the opportunity to illuminate new facets of this fractured world and its developing history, but also to tie a fierce, cheeky, and reluctant hero to Diana’s side along the way. Forced proximity on the quest forces Raven and Diana to get past their first impressions of one another and lets readers revel in the rising passion building between the two as they come to trust in each other. As always, Mayer infuses the story with great dialogue, emotionally deep scenes and fast action as things become steadily more dangerous. In Caged by Fate, she also manages to introduce a set of stronger and more dangerous pawns led by the still unrevealed villain and direct Diana’s journey through the visions of a food obsessed, perhaps cleverer than she ever lets on Seer.
I devoured this new series opener and am thoroughly invested in seeing how Diana’s story continues!
✨ My thoughts ✨ What a fun read. It was such a fast paced but captivating story. The FMC is such a badass. I loved reading her POV. Seeing her learn how to be the leader she wanted was great too. I loved loved the banter in this book. I was giggling so much. Also the tension... Yes please. The spice was also deliciously good. I loved all the turns this book took. I loved the action too. It was a great fantasy romance read.
Caged by Fate is book 4 The Alpha Territories. This one can be read first. It follows a different set of characters than the first three books. I am excited to go back and read the first three. This series is NA. As always please check TW before reading. This book is out now!
✨ I want to thank the author for this ARC copy. These are my own true thoughts. ✨
I will be the first to admit that I was starting to lose interest in this series during the third book, but this one really brought me back in!
The fourth installment begins our journey following Diana, a half-vampire turned werewolf Queen.
Once bitten, twice shy? Diana is certainly jaded, having had her heart broken when she was much younger and has left no room for anyone new. Enter the smoothtalking, overly flirtatious, and notorious ladies' man, Raven, her vampire half-brother's right-hand soldier.
Diana and Raven's chemistry results in a boat load *wink wink* of tension and wicked game of tug-of-war.
I can't wait to see how the next book plays out because something ( or someone ) has got to give!
"I had finally accepted the truth. A life without Diana by my side was no life at all."
In this book though we follow a different duo leaving behind Dominic & Sienna for a bit. We follow the wolf queen, Diana and the vampire, Raven.
Diana is trying to track down a gem stolen years prior by an ex lover, Raven is sent with her as a protection detail with others. Diana is fierce, loyal and does not falter on this mission. Raven is secretive, flirtatious and relentless much to Diana’s annoyance.
This pair made for some fun POVs, they both have much to hide, and also a lot to learn about themselves along the way. This journey takes them on an unexpected path where we get to meet new and interesting characters.
The 2nd Alpha Territories storyline starts with a demand: "Now, your Werewolf Queen has sent out a call for aid. Don’t keep her waiting."
I LOVE that the Queen, the Alpha, is female! Diana has her quirks, and she has a quest. To complete it, she has to work with some vampires, and she is NOT happy about it.
The drama! Lots of action. Some spicy scenes mixed with loads of tension. A baddie from the previous stories we learn a little more about. New creatures, new characters, and a new location to explore, this part of the World is intriguing and had me glued to the pages. I'm excited for more and was not ready for this story to end.
Hidden By Fate should be coming out later this year, and I cannot wait to get my hands and eyes on it. I want more!
I'm getting an idea that these couples are going to get three books each, and people are just gonna fight the inevitable. It's at least a fun storyline, even if it's frustrating that they fight what they feel. I loved Diana for yelling at Raven for thinking he was homophobic, even if she only heard part of the conversation between Raven and Nick. Still waiting on some explanation on Sienna and Mav, maybe the next book will give a little insight. I'm definitely rooting for Diana and Raven to get their shit together.
Ms Mayer has a unique ability to write gripping, page turning stories with unexpected twists and turns. Diana is such an interesting character and it was lovely to find out more about her. Her interactions with Raven were mesmerising. The audiobook, with the two voice actors, Tillie Hooper and Will Peters just added that extra dimension to it!! Definitely one to read.
Move over Sienna and Dominic! Diana and Raven have taken the floor!
This is an adventure-filled romantasy with lots and lots of banter. Being the 4th book in the Alpha Territories series, the world has already been set up and the focus is primarily on characters and plot and boy was everything set up so nicely!
With the quest to restore the veil, Diana and Raven head to the human world....
If you love romantasy, you should definitely pick this one up!
I had a very difficult time getting into this one. I usually devour Mayer’s books. This just didn’t hold my interest, but I continued reading. Mayer is a magnificent writer and I will continue to read this series.
◦ I've received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ◦
⮞ 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 ⮜ Diana - Was fascinating getting to know a bit of her story because I think she's quite a complex character - meaning we need more books to get to know her properly. I loved how she kept herself and how she was imposing respect overall. Raven - Well, he's trouble, has a big mouth, and lots of banter and sarcasm but he's a good vampire. I loved all those details about him and that piece of gold about him and Diana - that was WOW. And those scenes where his fangs were dropping, hot damn they were so realistically made that I could envision his fangs just dropping and making him so much hotter lol. Loved his character and can't wait to read more about him. Myrr - Once again the book wouldn't be completed without her. She's not your typical seer lol, the scenes with her are always hilarious and I love her. She's also a foodie - quite the foodie, she's always eating lol. Mav - Ugh. He can die for what I care. I find him annoying, and such a "pick me" dude if that even exists, I do not like him and I think he has some hidden secrets and he is NOT the victim he appears to be.
⮞ 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝-𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 ⮜ The world-building isn't the main point of the story, but you get some scenes with the environment and also the places they visit, they're detailed and give you a bigger picture of where they are and what things are happening. I am still amazed by the "veil" thing and how the supernatural world is kept away from the human world, loved that detail from the first books, and still amazes me now.
⮞ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝/𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝 ⮜ The story is short and fast-paced. There is no boring moment in the story because everything just moves at a perfect pace. And there are LOTS of events happening from the very beginning and I just loved the adventure the story took me in. You've got some sort of zombies, a skeleton that talks, some type of hunters that are overly strong even tho they're humans, a seer that is always on the search for food, vampires, werewolves and they're all either fighting with each other or coming together to save the world - literally. The magical system is really simple and doesn't take you too much to understand it. The whole story was really easy to read and very entertaining. I enjoyed all the elements added to the story because if you have werewolves and so many supernatural beings, why not have a dragon too? The sexual tension was amazingly made, and I enjoyed the balance between the plot, events going on, and the romance/sexual tension side of the story.
⮞ 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞/TW ⮜ Not a clean romance. There's only one scene tho where things turned heated and ended with a very spicy moment, overall it has a lot of sexual tension, fighting, decapitation, and lots of fighting scenes since it is a supernatural world. Nothing that happened in the story triggered me.
"Caged by Fate" is an interesting installment in the Alpha Territories. Diana was born a vampire to the King, then she was bitten and now is a werewolf and royal. When her vampire father passes away she goes home where she is given a quest to locate and retrieve a gemstone that was stolen from her father by none other than Maverick, a lover who betrayed him. Now, her quest is to retrieve the gemstone and open a can of whupass on Maverick.
Her brother insists that she takes his most trusted friend and guard, Raven with her on the quest. Raven is a manwhore and he and Diana despise each other; or, do they? While preparing for their journey, Myrr, an old cantankerous Seer becomes a stowaway on the ship. She has a ravenous appetite and loves buffets. Most people feel her visions are iffy; but, Myrr know what she knows but only tells people her visions if they will not interfere with certain outcome. She is well aware that Diana and Raven's fates are intertwined. She just has to let them find it out on their own.
Before the group can get very far on their journey they are attacked by the Vanators, a group of humans who attack vampires. They survive and pretty soon they arrive at their destination where they get word that Maverick is close at hand. They continuously pursue him to no avail and they find themselves in many dangerous situations. There is a lot of plots and subterfuge. As they try to figure out how to retrieve the gemstone from the slippery Maverick and much to their dismay, Raven and Diana's attraction to each other begins to grow. Despite how they feel about each other they are both bound and determined to not fall for each other.
Just as they locate Maverick and retrieve the gemstone they are ready to return home. Unfortunately, before they can depart, two of their friends are kidnapped by the Vanators who have taken off in a ship. Here is where our story ends leaving us to wait for the next installment to find out the fate of our characters.
I really enjoyed the world that Shannon Mayer has designed. Additionally, the characters are multi-facted and interesting. I especially enjoyed the banter between Raven and Diana as well as the quirkiness of Myrr. I am really enjoying this series.
The quest continues. Dominic and Sienna have passed on the epic quest/fix the world torch onto Diana and Raven. While you don't need to read the first set of Alpha Territories books, I highly recommend it, so you have the broad view of what's going on. Diana is the queen of the werewolves. Her late father has left her with a task to find a stone that will help fix the broken world and possibly restore the Veil. Diana knows exactly who took it. A human who took advantage of Diana's kindness and vanished with the stone after she bared her heart to him. She sails off with a small contingent of werewolves, vampires, including the rakish Raven, and one stowaway Oracle. This should be a quick mission. How hard can it be to retrieve a stone from an elderly human? The quicker the better for Diana. It means the sooner she gets away from the devastatingly handsome, irritating as h*ll Raven. She doesn't need this attraction to him. She's a queen with people to protect and lead. She let her guard down once and got her heart broken. It becomes clear this mission will be anything but simple or quick, especially when they find their foe still looking like he's early 30 after 60 years have passed. Attacks from vampire hunters, dragons, and the same entity that tried to kill Sienna is trying to thwart Diana at every turn. Things are getting interesting real quick. I really enjoyed the book. I didn't connect with Diana like I did Sienna. I think Diana is a little too bitter after a 2-week romance that wasn't a romance. Aside from that, I love her take charge and kick butt attitude. I especially love Raven. I love his cocky attitude and sarcasm. And I just need to know why he wears it like a shield. What heart breaking secrets is he hiding? In true Shannon Mayer fashion, this book is fast paced and filled with characters you just can't help but fall in love with. I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the next book. I can't wait to see what happens next.
CAGED BY FATE is the fourth in a series, but it begins the story of a new couple, making it function like the first. In other words, you don't need to have read earlier books to enjoy this one and understand what is going on. Diana is the werewolf heir whose poor choice when it came to trusting a human led to his deception and theft. Now, having taken over the throne, if she has any chance of keeping her people safe, she must go after him and secure the stolen jewel.
On her quest, she brings two others, though one in particular has always gotten under her skin. Raven has a playboy persona, and he is just as reluctant about going with Diana as she is about him - but he knows that he is a skilled fighter and can help on this quest. When the seer confirms this, their course is set, and they travel to the Mainland together into unexpected dangers and an even more unexpected attraction.
The book starts a bit slow, taking a while to set up the characters before heading into the action. That said, the later parts of the book were very engaging. The story gives perspectives from both Diana and Raven, which adds to their relationship, building it well as we see their true thoughts about the other amidst the banter. They are both characters who care about their people and their world deeply, desiring to do whatever they must to protect them. They have their differences, but this adds to the fun of the passion as it starts off with plenty of tension.
My favorite character was the seer, who comes along for the ride. Through her prophecies, the reader grasps the directions this will all be going much sooner than the characters - who often want to fight their fate. This is a series I am interested to follow!
Overall, CAGED BY FATE launches an intriguing new adventure with a charming romance of banter, light rivalry, and forced proximity that will entertain current and new readers of this series. Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.
I want to start off by saying that I am a fan of this series. While I get that out of the way, this wasn't my favorite book. For some reason, Diana bothered me. I haven't had a problem with her in previous books, but for some reason, she just really got on my nerves. I think it had to do with the fact that it FELT like she was trying to show her power as a leader and get her way, even when her ideas might not necessarily have been the best plans. Honestly, I don't even know if that's it. I just didn't like her as much as I should have. By the end of the book, I was feeling better about her, but that feeling took away some of my enjoyment.
Raven, on the other hand, was a really fun character. I liked his arrogance and attitude, because even when he was annoying, it felt like he was just trying to get a rise and not really his real attitude.
Anyway, this is the continuation of the Alpha Territories series and we have moved on to the Werewolf Queen going on a quest to find a gem that was stolen from her and her Pack 60 years ago. Supposedly, this gem was needed to help repair and close the Veil, which has torn and is slowly causing disasters in the world. After 15 years, it will not be much longer until the world as they know it is gone.
So this begins the quest. Raven and Nicholas (2 Vampires) are sent with Diana as protection as they go to the Human Lands to try to find the man who stole the gem. Along the way, there is a whole lot of roadblocks that they have to overcome - a dragon, a necromancer, many many Vanadors, demons, a volcano and a very very evil presence named Lilis.
By the end of the book, I was completely invested again and sad when I realized that this book was going to end without finishing this part of the storyline. So now we wait for Book5 - Hidden by Fate to find out what is going to happen between Raven and Diana. And I think it is fair to say that I am definitely rooting for Raven
