I Take back what I previously said of Volume 4 being my least favourite. It is clearly this volume.

Also, did we just witness Shisio grabbing Mamura by the neck for pointing out the truth??
As a woman who’s passed the age of Shisio, I cannot, for my life, fathom trying something with an underage student who would be under my care. I just cannot like Shisio at all.

2020 Read #245

I’m getting bored with this series. Not much happened this volume, and there was not enough of Mamura. Also — Shishio is proving himself to be an awful person more and more, not even trying anymore at this point to rebuff Suzume’s feelings for him. He’s the adult in the situation, and she’s the one who is going to get hurt the most in this situation. I really don’t understand why anyone would be rooting for any kind of relationship between the two of them.

Suzume manages to survive the school festival and it appears that she might be making progress with Shishio. Meanwhile, Mamuka needs to fix his tie and Yuyuka finds her courage and gets at least one looming plot point out of the way.

Hoo boy, my rating for this one is almost entirely based off the first chapter. The rest of the book is really good, fret not, but Mamuka taking one for the audience to dump on the overly hormonal Shishio is really what I needed.

Mind you, Shishio (he can have the mister appellation back when he acts like a grown-ass adult) at least makes it clear that he’s not just in this for the cheap thrill of it all. It’s not much, but it’s something. And make no mistake, it’s really not much.

In fact, even as Suzume and Shishio grow closer, I think the writing is doing a very good job at portraying the awkwardness and the inherent bad idea that their positions and age gap make any whiff of a relationship.

We already see Shishio having to sneak around in a ludicrous costume to spend time with Suzume and, later on, it’s pretty clear that neither of them are willing to bring the subject up within earshot of Suzume’s uncle.

Elsewhere, Yuyuka finally makes her move and it goes about what we expected, although it does drop a crucial tidbit about Mamuka that should not pass your eyes without triggering a ‘huh’ moment.

As annoying as the ‘school popular dude’ was last time, I have to admit he comes through for Yuyuka in the clutch. I also appreciate how his overtures during the school pageant are, uh, addressed. Yuyuka is great, is what I’m saying.

We end on a quiet little moment between Suzume and Shishio after the former has been working her butt off for the latter’s birthday. I mean, we’ll see what happens...

Then there’s a very cute one shot that actually didn’t annoy me because we got a full volume of Daytime Shooting Star instead of a truncated one and the story being told is complete and satisfying within its fifty-ish pages. If I must have a one shot, this is how to do it.

Butlers and cafes and dates, oh ties! It’s important to remember that there are no mature characters in this story right now, save Suzume’s uncle. The heart wants what it wants, but the brain should really hose it down before somebody calls the cops.

A good volume for this series, nonetheless. This is one of those books where I finish a volume and then buy the next one immediately so I have it on hand when I need to read something I know will be great. Despite a romance that is wholly inappropriate, it continues to be charming as it goes where it should not.

Qué difícil lo tiene Shishio...
Este tomo contiene un one shot al final que no tiene que ver con la historia.Ya es el segundo tomo que trae uno. Yo los dejo para leer en otro momento y que no me saquen de los feelings de la historia principal 💜

Yuyuka is one of those misunderstood mean girls who have such a terrific character developement! I love how she never could hate Suzume and becomes the best of friends with her, despite knowing that it is her Mamura loves. Unrequited crush is really sad.

Now we are getting somewhere, at least with Suzume and Shishio! Things happens during the cultural festival!! Ahhh this forbidden romance is killing me! And Yuyuke also finally confessed to Mamura and that chapter is closed.

Favorite quotes from this volume:
Both from Shishio:

"It's a pity that I've never seen a shooting star in a day time, but I feel like I've started to understand the meaning of it. Because I'm sure that you are my day time shooting star."

"I would be the happiest person in the world if I could just flirt with her freely."

PS. And is that guy on the cover supposed to be Shishio???

Hmmm, I'm reading this manga because I was told a spoiler about the ending, but...getting to that point is a struggle. I just can't ship a teacher and a student like this--it feels skeevy. It's not a good message to give to teens, that a relationship with an adult is something that is 1) viable, 2) romantic, and 3) something they shouldn't tell their parents/guardians about.

I'll soldier on because of the promised end, and because Mamura is the real MVP, but...sadly I'm not enjoying it all that much. =\

I really do like Shishio, but like fuck!!! Please don't reciprocate feelings for your first year student!!! Like ahhhhh!!! Why?? I want to like the characters and support the romance, but she's like 15 and he's 25. He's her teacher!!! As much as it doesn't feel predatory it still is! Please don't be a creep, Shishio!! Nothing's really happened yet, but they've already started being secretive. Ugh. Idk how to feel.

Ugh I might stop rating each individual volume because this is really a series that I can tell is more about the journey and the gradual growth/development of the characters so even if I didn’t “enjoy” where this one ended I don’t think we’re supposed to???? anyway, we are stanning and waiting for shishio to exit the picture <3

por favor díganme que el hecho de que Mamura esté en la portada del siguiente volumen significa que va a haber menos momentos entre la prota y el profe because I can't take much more of them together without vomitar

As the main character continues to feel confused as to where she lies in her teacher's life, she finally receives the answer that he feels the same way she does as a Daytime Shooting Star. I feel bad for her desperately, cause she feels like he simply cares for her because he's a caring teacher over a caring boyfriend / potential boyfriend. I don't blame her at all, he's constantly jumping back and forth.

Chapters 29 - 34: This volume concludes the school festival story arc and also includes the class play that Yuyuka and Minagawa were in together. Things between Suzume and Shishio start to shift more in this volume as well and it ends with Shishio's Birthday so I am looking forward to seeing what happens next with the birthday storyline as it ends in a bit of a cliffhanger before the bonus story begins.

Ahhh this story. I'm currently conflicted because I do not like the story path that it is going down but I know that in the future I will enjoy it. I'm not liking what is happening between Suzume and Mr. Shishio. Mr. Shishio does a lot of contradicting actions which annoy me as a reader. If I were to put myself in Suzume's shoes I would be so confused because he treats her like a student somedays, a neighbour he needs to look out for, and someone that he is interested in romantically. I would be so confused if I was her, and Mr. Shishio doesn't give her the space to move on from her feelings so they are stuck in limbo. My favourite character has got to be Mamura, because he constantly calls out Mr. Shishio saying things like, "A teacher has no business seducing his students." I can't wait to see more of him. I didn't like the ending because it's progressing further down the storyline that I'm not enjoying.
On the plus side, this volume contains a chapter which is not a part of Daytime Shooting Star and I really enjoyed it. I would read if it was it's own manga. I would give that chapter 4/5 stars.

This manga often comes up in blog posts and recommendations as a manga where the second lead (AKA the decent guy) gets the girl. So, a plot where Second Lead Syndrome won't happen and where the girl would be treated well?
SIGN ME THE F UP.
However, I really, truly, wholeheartedly dislike Teacher-Student romance but I can be lenient if both are no longer minors. So imagine my surprise when I was able to finish this considering the FL is in HS and the homeroom teacher is, what, a decade older?? I was shookt. (Went back to check: FL is 16 while teacher is 24, yuck.) So what kept me reading? The intense desire to get over it and unleash my anger over the stupid, stupid plot. Is it good? I'm not sure. I was rushing through each pages, filled with wanting to find out who she ends up with, that I think I ended up reading a spoiler midway and then just breezing through the remaining chapters of that arc.

Honestly, Uncle said it best on Chap 46:
You jerk, do you understand what you're doing?

Good points for this manga: FL isn't ditzy, the girls are fun and supportive (we love women supporting women), mangaka tried to add diversity to her characters (I love Tsuru and Inukai), and Mamoru (the softest boy)... but these aren't enough to make up for the stress it gave me lmao

If I read any more of the story it will be a bit of a hate read cause I can't get into this story. Shishio is 25. I am younger than that and wouldn't consider liking a high schooler. Much less one I teach and am in an authoritative position over. He knows its wrong and goes out of his way in a tanuki costume to hang out with her. The wrongness of it isn't explored enough in this series. Teenage love is dumb and confusing and this represents it, but it's not mentioning the taboo-ness of this at all at this point.

Short Story: Cookie Girl, Cream Boy.
First off what a title. Hilarious. I didn't like how much it emphasized his skin being fair. I know that beauty standards in Japan lean that way, but I wish they didn't and I wish it wasn't emphasized so much in this story.

So it comes to 'the part' where you should just enjoy the characters' blushings and such. I still liked Hirunaka no Ryuusei for the mangaka seems to have a good sense of shoujo/josei choices (judging from the cameo) and she draws her characters pretty interestingly. So yes, the earlier parts of this kind of shoujo manga are mostly more enjoyable. I'm waiting for some more real challenges please :D

Regardless, best cover x)

Ughhh. Pulling out my hair at this point. My interest in Shishio is dropping really fast. I yelled when Mamura called Shishio out on his BS. Yes! Slap some sense into him! (Didn’t happen, but I wish it did.) I find it funny that at the end of the book, the mangaka says “please don’t give up on Shishio”. OKAY FINE. I’ll keep reading, but I’m not happy!

I am literally on my last shred of patience. Please please PLEASE don’t let Shishio and Suzume end up together.
