Review copy was received from Publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

The Grimm Society is the first book in a series of the same name following Everly as she goes through a traumatic event with the loss of a parent that opens her up to being a Griever, someone who can see the Grimms living in this world.  She is invited to be part of a secret society and attend an exclusive school where she can learn about Grimms and the best way to keep herself alive.

I enjoy a good magic school and the thing I liked about this is that the magic was seeing through the veil so to speak.  Other than that and studying the different Grimms, there wasn't any other big magic that the student themselves possess.  Instead Everly has been unknowingly groomed for this her entire life by her detective father.  He taught her how to profile and read people along with so investigative skills and self defense.  She might not have known why until after he died but she is learning fast that there was more to her family than she was ever aware of.

There is a mystery of who is killing hikers in the area.  It has been suggested by normals that it is a big cougar in the area.  But, Everly and the other students at Gravemark are sure it has to be a Grimm and now they are trying to figure out what kind it could be and how to track them.  Everly has never had a lot of luck dating either.  She has had a 'small' crush on her best friends brother for years now, but never acted on it.  They are now at the same school and there is another boy that she can't decide if she wants to kiss or hit.  A few sparks are flying everywhere in this very minor love triangle

This was a really fun introductory book to the world, the magic, the mysteries and I had fun with it.  I did figure out a lot of the plot points early, but it was still fun getting to the climax of the story.  Great if you like who-dun-its and schools for the magically inclined.
Narration:
Amy McFadden did really well with the narration and emotion of the characters.  She was able to capture the voice of the main female teenage character well and make all the side characters distinguishable.  Her voice of the grandmother was a lot of fun and added some humorous relief in some of the more serious moments.  I did think the production ran a little slow for my taste and so I increased the listening speed of 1.75x instead of my usual 1.5x speed.

Really entertaining from page 1. Strong plot and really strong characters. I also really enjoyed the writing! It's really fast paced, there was always something happening. I thought I was going to know what the final reveal was but I was not expecting where the story went. I'm looking forward to reading book 2 sometime in the near future!

I really loved the narration, I was already a fan of Amy as a narrator so I knew I would like this.

Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for a ALC!! All opinions are my own! 🫶🏻

Everly is unknowingly fated to become a Griever but only after she experiences a tragic death. To become a Griever she has to attend Gravemark Academy where she learns how to reap fairytale creatures, "Grimms", if they don't kill her first.

This is a fast paced dark academia with a ton of brilliant twists. I cried, gasped, and laughed.

I listened to the audiobook. Amy McFadden' narration was great. She was able to distinguish all the different voices and there's quite a few characters. Which made for a very immersive experience.

Thank you Netgalley, RBmedia, Neverwood Press, and Chanda Hahn for providing me with this audiobook for my honest review.

I received an ARC of this book and I have to say....Chanda Hahn knocked it out of the park again. This twist on the Grimm fairy tales is great. Everly is a wonderful character and I hope there are more things to come for her. I was so entranced in the story that I read it within a day. I can't wait to see what comes next.

I recieved this Audiobook as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. (From netgalley)
The author used the same old concept of the supernatural beings, but did portrayed it in a common yet a unique way.
The concept of the Grimm and the Grievers was somewhat refreshing, than the age of concept of the vampires, the werewolves and the witches covens.
The mystery in the story, and the clues and twists were all tightly packed, and I throughly enjoyed it. The detective work was also quite commendable.
The characters and their specific traits were so well explained, that I could picture each one of them clearly in my brain, and also I coukd anticipate their reaction to an incident.
I like both the love interests of the FL, and I am dying to know, who she will end up ultimately in the end.
Although the mystery didn't seem that well coveted, as at some point we coukd guess the detective work beforehand, but few twists were good.

Now coming to the audiobook, the narrator was good, I loved the voiceovers of different characters, the emotions of the lines could be percieved in the voice. I enjoyed listening to the audio.

Coming to my rating: out of 5 stars ⭐️
Title : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Interesting
Cover: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ good graphic
Character development: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ each character developed throughout the story, to become a stronger version of themselves, I did love their journey.
Writing style: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ the writing is good, the lines and words simple and understandable, and all the emotions were percievable.
Originality: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ the plot in general is a common one, but there is also a uniqueness present in it.
Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ as already said the plot is a bit general, but the buildup of the mystery and story, till we reach the final reveal in the end, was well done.
Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I'm giving this book 4 stars. I would have given 5 stars if the mystery would have been even more solid and twist packed. I'm excited to read the next book, to know about the FL and also her love interests 😉.

Audio rating : out of 5 🎶
Narration Quality : 🎶 🎶 🎶 🎶 the narration and different voiceovers was quite enjoyable. I did love the portrayal of emotions in the audio
Pacing : 🎶 🎶 🎶 🎶 the story was paced ok, though I did find the pace a bit slow, but with the speed option, I did adjust the pacing to my liking.
Production Quality : 🎶 🎶 🎶 🎶 the production was done well. I did enjoy the audio. But I do always wonder, so audiobooks have music in them, for the different emotions, if no then I would love to listen to one which has those sound effects.
Engagement : 🎶 🎶 🎶 🎶 the audio did make the story engaging and also kept me in loop with the story. The voice was also caprivating.
Overall Enjoyment : 🎶 🎶 🎶 🎶 overall to say I did enjoy listening to the audio. I would love ro listen to other narrations by the narrator.

First, I appreciated the entertainment quality of this one. The quirky characters, the world building, and the action all contributed to this. It was a fun read.

Now with all that said, there were some gaping issues as well. I had too many questions during and many remaining after it ended. School attendance? Kids dying? The weird hospital? The locking mechanism of dangerous beings? Family dynamics? And more. It was all just glossed over with really no attention to details that would have brought it all home.

I also didn't really get the romance. It felt so superficial. But overall, I can't deny that it was entertaining....so I'll round up.

This book took me in so many different directions, but in the best way. The mystery was truly a mystery until the reveal was upon me. Eloquently written YA academy book!

Everly has been trained from a young age by her father for any bad thing that might happen. Unfortunately, she still wasn’t prepared for the truth of her family. Our FMC goes through some difficult changes in this book but she remains true to who she is throughout. A slightly awkward but independent teenager who can take care of herself and gets tongue tied around hot guys haha.

I’m actually not sure who I like more as a true love interest. One is a long-term crush but the forbidden brother of bestie! *gasp*. He is overprotective and handsome. While the other is the talented bad boy who is also hot, allows our FMC to do her thing before stepping in, and gets shyt done!

I really enjoyed this first in series. Plot was amazing, character development was on point, and the mystery sucked me in. I can’t wait for more!

Overall, I felt like this book had potential and the romance just killed it. If you want a good mystery, skip this one. If you want a romance that makes you feel secondhand embarrassment, then by all means, dive in. But honestly? I’m still here trying to figure out what kind of love triangle I’ve just been tortured with.

Quick review:
♦︎ Conveniently super smart only when the plot demands it - Female Lead
♦︎ Love? triangle
♦︎ Maybe male lead - rich, full package but has a girlfriend and is the FLs BFF brother
♦︎ Maybe other male lead - Mysterious, assigned mentor, who acts like he hates her
♦︎ Murder Mystery
♦︎ Mysterious School for children who are known as grievers
♦︎ Grimm Fairytale Monsters
♦︎ Huge emphasis on YA

What I didn't like:
Welcome to my rant as I only ever have a long review to write when I got beef with the book.

- Hunter - one of the male leads (gag) - Rich, good looking, perfect at everything, & FL’s BFF brother. Because, of course, we couldn’t have a love triangle without that nice little sprinkle of incest-adjacent tension. But wait, it gets better. This guy is in a relationship, tells his girlfriend he loves her, and then immediately starts flirting with Everly like he’s auditioning for “Most Confusing Romantic Lead of the Year.” And when things inevitably get messy, he blames Everly for “temptation.” Excuse me, sir? You can’t be a walking contradiction and then play the victim when it all blows up in your face. You are the problem.

- Love triangle - SIGH Because, of course, we can’t have a dark, supernatural murder mystery without a love triangle. I HATE LOVE TRIANGLES. The romance in this book is so poorly executed, it’s honestly a public service to stay single.

- Everly - The Female Lead - She’s smart, but only when the plot demands it, which, unsurprisingly, is usually when she's about to figure something out that should’ve been obvious five chapters ago. ALSO, this girl is so starved for attention I’m honestly worried about her food supply. At one point, she’s literally fighting to be initiated into this school (that she obviously really wants to join) and can barely focus because she’s distracted by Hunter’s glorious presence. A girl’s fighting for survival, and her mind is wandering to him like he's a distraction in a physics class. Girlie, wyd? Then, after a traumatic, near-death experience (two people die, and she’s almost burned alive), her thoughts immediately go to Ian and his abs,and because we can't forget the other, almost kisses Hunter. Why is she acting like she’s so starved? Tired of authors shoving romance in any spot in the story without caring about time and place.

- Everly and Stevens... - Officer Creeper, the 20-year-old who's crushing on Everly. Let me remind you: Everly is 17 and still in high school. I’m not saying this is a “foul” situation, I’m just saying if I were a concerned parent, I’d be calling the cops—oh wait, he’s the cop! It’s the kind of romance that makes you look over your shoulder and go, “Am I reading a YA book or a true-crime documentary about grooming?” Either way, it’s uncomfortable.

- The end with the whole "You have family, it's us" was so cringe, tone it down Fast & Furious. The melodrama was so over-the-top, I half-expected someone to shout, “Brothers and sisters, forever!”

- Grimm fairytale monsters - They are supposed to add this sinister flair, but honestly, they’re about as threatening as a stuffed teddy bear. They’re just there to make the story seem darker than it actually is. Spoiler alert: They’re more like a backdrop than an actual plot element. I was more interested in figuring out who didn’t deserve to be in a love triangle than figuring out who committed the murder.

Big Thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for the advanced copy!

'The Grimm Society' is the first book of The Grimm Society series and it combines the YA school genre with mystery in a supernatural universe.

The story is pretty fast paced, almost too fast at times, as, in the end, the mystery was conveniently solved, which, for some part, it didn't make sense how our main character put things together, when she couldn't really figure out the most obvious clues. Also, there were some parts of the plot that felt disjointed and didn't develop organically in the plot.

Still, the mystery, in the end, was solid, and the main character was very interesting and adorable. The love interests were in theory stereotypical love interests but there were some toxic elements to their behavior, which were not talked about enough in retrospect.

Everly loves her dad and Grandma when her life turns upside down…

I enjoyed this book and I’ve been a Chanda Hahn fan forever. In my opinion this was the better of her newer books. I felt that the book was a little slow in some areas and too fast in others. Overall I think this is a good start to the series.

Genre: mystery, paranormal, YA

TW: death of parents throughout, blood, injuries, mental health hospital explained, violent mental health episode

This book was surprisingly SO good!!! It was fast, entertaining, creative, and had enjoyable characters. The plot twists were not that shocking but I still really enjoyed reading this hidden gem <3

I found “The Grimm Society” while simply scrolling on the available audiobooks page on Libby and clicked play on it because of the blurb which sounded like a mix of Supernatural and Lockwood and Co!

Synopsis:
This book follows our main character, Everly who becomes a griever after experiencing a tragic event. Being a griever means seeing supernatural creatures called “Grimm”. As Everly navigates through these pivotal changes in her life, she must also discover the real culprit behind the mysterious murders happening in her small town, and train to fight the Grimm at Gravemark Academy alongside her best friend.

The main things I enjoyed about this book were the characters and the creative world! I liked Everly as the main character a lot and I liked how logical she was throughout most of the book.
I don’t particularly gel with the love between her, Hunter (her best friend’s brother) and Ian (her guarded mentor who she’s constantly at odds with). I think for it to be a valid love triangle, Hunter needed to appear more in the book.

I also simply can’t handle a love triangle if one of the characters is unbearable, and that would be Hunter in this case. He was unnecessarily overprotective and way too careless with Everly for someone who was already in a relationship. Now this is completely on me, but I also couldn’t stop imagining him as the Hunter from Ginny and Georgia while reading this book (I have no viable explanation for this), and that man gives me the absolute ick. Scenarios like these where I might completely despise a character simply because they share a name with another character I hate occur occasionally, and i truly can’t explain them so a lot of it is on my part (lol).

I really liked Ian’s character because he wasn’t annoying and I really don’t need anything more.

I liked the little bits of world building here and there throughout the book since it made me feel like I was discovering this new world with Everly!

Although I think there were some moments which were a bit rushed (the dads dying), overall this book was pretty solid and a great way to pass your time if you’re looking for something that’s not been forced into your mind by booktok or bookgram, and is super easy to get through!

4.5 ⭐️ (round up to 5 stars)

This was my first book by Chanda Hahn, but it is right up my alley! This YA dark academia is a fairy tale kind of combination of Harry Potter and Narnia with Inheritance Games vibes, but in a very original way.

The story is about Everly who becomes a “griever” the moment she witnessed a devastating death. With a newfound ability, she can see what others cannot—supernatural beings known as grimms. Then, an invitation arrives from the Grimm Society, inviting her to attend Gravemark, an elite school where grievers are trained to track and reap grimms. Everly thought navigating high school and dating was challenging, but now her assignments could be life-threatening.

The characters are well-developed, each bringing their own quirks, specific ''abilities'' and depth to the story. The writing style is fluid and engaging, making it easy to get lost in the narrative. The twists and turns are clever, and just when you think you have it all figured out, the plot takes an unexpected turn.

I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Amy McFadden. However, I did not enjoy her voice for the most part. Her ''normal voice'' can become really annoying at times (sorry). On the other side, the voice over of different characters is actually really good and makes her voice a lot easier to listen at. It also makes the story very engaging and keeps you listening. The pace was a bit slow, but I used the speed option to adjust it to my liking.

Overall, The Grimm Society is a delightful read for fans of fantasy and those who enjoy a fresh take on beloved tales. It’s a strong addition to the genre that will leave you eagerly anticipating the next installment!

Many thanks to NetGalley and RBmedia for providing me the audiobook in exchange for my honest review.

The Grimm Society is book 1 in the Grimm Society series, and let's just say, what a good way to start the series! This book had me hooked from the beginning. I devoured this audiobook in a day and a half. I enjoyed the paranormal/supernatural aspect of this story. Werewolves, faeries—I mean, who doesn't want to read this book? It definitely gave me HP vibes. The premise: "Seventeen-year-old Everly Hart became a 'griever' the day she witnessed a tragic death. Imbued with a second sight, she can now see what others cannot—supernatural creatures called grimms."
The audiobook is great! The narrator did a good job telling the story and changing her voice for different characters. It's very easy to listen to, understand, and follow along.

3.5 STARS rounded up to 4

I did enjoy this book, it kept me entertained & intrigued.
Doesn’t happen often with YA these days, so I was pleased.
I have to say, quite often when I read a YA novel it’s so blatantly obvious that it’s an adult trying to write like a teen and it’s just cringe. The things they think the teen would find funny or do is so off the mark. For example, one girl tries to shame a guy by saying she’ll spread it around that he likes SpongeBob SquarePants and that he has a crush on Sandy. Seriously, that’s supposed to be a burn and so funny, but it’s just not. Maybe for a 12 or 13 yr old, but not older teens.
There were other things I can’t recall now but I just rolled my eyes at and thought ‘yeah, not likely’ & moved on.
It’s like when male authors write from a female’s perspective, it rarely goes right. And visa versa.
But the book was good enough to look past those minor things & I look forward to the next book in the series.

A training school for fighting fairy tale baddies!

It’s been a while since I’ve read a YA book like this, and I enjoyed being transported into this fun and adventurous world.

It’s a little silly and formulaic, but it’s enjoyable and I thought the world building unusually good for the subgenre. I would have liked more school and less love triangle, but I can’t fault the author for this as I know love triangles are what sell YA books.

In all this is an inventive spin on the magical school theme, and it was well-paced and light. I’d read another.

This was a fun and very quick listen. I enjoyed the narration, which suited the story perfectly in both tone and tenor. The story itself is an oft-told one, but Hahn still managed to change things up enough to keep my attention throughout, and to wonder what might come next. The pacing is well managed and keeps you in the story throughout. It definitely feels like the setup to a sequel or series, and I would listen to future installments happily!

A great start to a fun YA fantasy series!

Everly has been trained to escape any situation by her father, a detective. But when he dies, saying "it's Grimm" Everly discovers a whole new world of monsters- literally. The monsters the Grimm Brothers wrote about are true and now she attends a school to hunt them.
Full of a collection of monsters, a minor love triangle, and some mean girls too, this first book is a great start and I hope to read more

Let me start with saying I am absolutely in love with this book. I‘ve been a fan of fairytales since I was a kid and this twist of the Grimm fairytales was just amazing. This book was really fast paced which is exactly my cup of tea. The twists were just amazing and you don’t know which direction it is going next. The narrator was just amazing. I loved listening to her.
I love everything about this book. The characters the story, everything. It was really fast paced and I loved to get to know the Grimm society with Everly. I am more than excited to read the second book.

I grew up watching a tv series called "Grimm". I loved the concept of special people who can see supernatural creatures. This book feels the void I have had since the TV show ended.

The only complaint I have is the love triangle. This girl just lost her father, was thrown into a weird world, and there is a killer on the loose. A love triangle just isn't necessary. But, they are all teenagers, and teenagers do stupid things. So, I understand it, even if it annoyed me.

Surprisingly good story! While it was kinda short I finished it in a day it was fun and enjoyable.

The whole Everly-Hunter-Ian dynamic was giving me some Violet-Dain-Xaden vibes and I ship Everly and Ian so damn hard! Hunter can suck it

I'm looking forward to reading the next book which I will likely also finish in a day as I'm hooked.

This book definitely deserves more hype.

I listened to this book in audio form. The narrator did fall a bit flat for me with some of the characters. I wanted a little more excitement. This book was interesting. It’s basically a monster hunting book, by people with the sight to see them. The main FMC goes to a new school where they hunt Grimms and everything comes to her naturally. This is a pretty quick paced read full of All the creatures from fairytales. The characters are lovable, although I wish they would have developed a little more. The plot was good. Although we’ve seen different variations of this plot, it literally never gets old if it’s done right. I liked this and will be reading book 2.

This is one of my most favorite authors. I will read anything she writes. I am impressed with how she can take existing stories and lore then spin them into something else worth reading. This book was unique, intriguing and just want I wanted to read but didn't know it. It felt a bit like a YA Spiderwick Chronicles...sort of. Maybe with a bit of Harry Potter and Agatha Christie mixed in. It is actually hard to describe, but that gives you a bit of the flavor. I would definitely recommend others read it. Then, go read more by Hahn. I can't wait to see what happens next with Everly and her friends.

Much thanks to Chanda Hahn, Tantor, and NetGalley for allowing me to listen to a free eaudio ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Loved this! I got Harry Potter vibes and Everly channeled Feyre a bit during her test, which tickled me.

It felt like there got to be too many plot lines, though; they got tangled in my mind and I struggled to keep up with Everly. "Oooo a clue! Wait, which mystery does that matter to?" Relative, Everly's suspicions were kept a little too secret from the reader. "Ohhhh, she noticed something.....she's getting fingerprints.....I don't know why or what it indicates but cool....." Or maybe the pace got going too fast toward the end, or maybe my ADHD brain just couldn't keep everything straight, I don't know, but the last third to quarter I struggled to keep up.

All the G words got tangled in my brain, too---grievers, grimms, gravemark, etc

Regardless, I liked this story a lot and can't wait to spend more time with Everly and her found family of likeable, quirky classmates. I can't wait for Holland to gain some confidence and feel valuable. I want Cat to come out of her shell, just enough to accept friendships.

I'm not a fan of love triangles, but I'll tolerate them if the parties involved don't act petty and immature, and if there's no cheating. Everly's path to Hunter seems to be clearing with only Holland left to maneuver around . . . but I have a feeling Ian is endgame, which would be fine with me. I'm guessing with the secrets out of the way, Everly and Ian will be able to relax around one another and open up. Hunter's nice, but he comes across rather privileged and cocky; I get the sense that he's a boy and Ian's a man.

Oh, and Everly's mom! I want to know more about Everly's mom. Everly does, too, but she still isn't able to admit it.

If I thought harder I'd probably find fault in the academia setting; Everly sure didn't spend much time in the classroom. What's the point of the school if she isn't going to learn things that help the plot advance or come back around later on?

The world building could have been a bit richer, the lore a bit clearer. So anyone who's witnessed a death is a griever? And all grievers can see grimms? No, I don't think that's right. Once you're a griever you're noticeable to grimms? But only some grievers can see grimms? Only some learn to fight them? I guess I'm not quite understanding where the line is between grievers and "muggles," if you will. Can you witness a death and not go to griever school? And what makes Everly special that she can "see" other creatures, like dryads?* Yeah, the rules of this world could use some clarification. More will be explained in books 2 and 3 I'm sure, but it'd be nice if book 1 made more sense as well lol!

*I liked Everly, but she did feel like a weird mix of Mary Sue and hapless/feckless. She was exceptionally competent in some ways, utterly worthless in others. Her father taught her to take care of herself, yet she sure passed out a lot and needed rescuing. Contradictory---either she knows what she's doing or she doesn't, make up your mind.

I'll be watching for the galley of book 2 in a couple weeks!

Chanda Hahn has done it again!
I fell in love with the Unfortunate Fairy Tale series years ago and was beyond excited when I heard about The Grimm Society! Finally, Chanda was giving us a new Grimm series full of fantasy, supernatural, mystery and action with a little romance mixed in.

Chanda Hahn does an incredible job weaving supernatural fantasy into modern day reality.

Oh my gosh was this book full of all sorts of twists and turns, keeping me guessing (and second guessing) until the end. Seriously, every time I thought I figured out a slight piece of the puzzle, something else happened that messed up all my theories. And while I guessed one or two mysteries, I came no where close to guessing all the little details. Nor did I expect so many little details and mysteries within the main plot of the story. While some were answered and a few solved, there’s still a few things briefly mentioned that I want to know more about. This book definitely keeps readers guessing! I enjoy mysteries that I can’t quite figure out or that totally take me by surprise and The Grimm Society did not disappoint!

The FMC Everly is a griever, someone with the ability to see grimms (supernatural creatures) and she is invited to attend Gravemark with other grievers where she not only trains and learns more about grimms and who she is but also about her family and their legacy. Everly is a strong FMC, she’s relatable and likable and while a smart, quick thinker she still sometimes makes mistakes and has typical teen issues such as fitting in and boy drama. Then there’s Holland, Hunter, Ian, Kat, Birdie and can’t forget Corvis. Plus even more side characters that play a much bigger role than first realized. I want to mention more about each character but at the same time don’t want to give anything away. Each character has their own little mysteries/surprises.

There were a few times when I wish a few more details had been provided or just overall given more time to what was happening while other times a little too much/unnecessary details were given. The story went too fast at times I wanted more and a little slow at times when I wanted to move along. There are also quite a few references included that I’m not sure all readers will get or understand. From Pokémon to DnD to Fight Club…. I caught all the little references, some even made me laugh like the dnd one but younger readers possibly won’t. I know for sure my teen daughter wouldn’t get a few of them (Fight Club would definitely go over her head lol). None of this takes away from the story, just my personal opinion.

This book doesn’t quite end in a cliffhanger as the main plot of the book was resolved yet it does give way to lead into book two (kinda reminded me of the Descendants movies with the teaser of continuing the story) plus there are several sub-plots left unanswered for now ….including one right at the end. All I can say is December needs to hurry up because I need book two!

Oh and I’m totally Team Ian!

Reader’s Notes:

– this is the first of a series (this book doesn’t have a cliffhanger, just some unanswered questions leftover from the side plot to the main plot of this book)

– this is told mainly from Everly’s point of view (with 1 chapter not from her point of view)

– Everly’s father dies from pancreatic cancer (during the events of the story)

– Everly’s mother left them when she was young

– a character appears to have a drinking problem

– there is a depiction of a mental hospital & some of the residents’ issues

– there are a few lighter descriptions of blood, death, and ghoulish creatures (meaning there are some details, but Everly quickly switches focus off these things and moves onto something else)

Review:

I loved this story so much and I’m curious as to where things will go beyond the point that we ended at! It was riveting to see Everly discover this whole new world within her own and for her to use the skills her father taught her in it. I totally temporarily forgot some of the things mentioned/discovered as the story went on so I was a little floored when some things were revealed, but looking back I could see how everything had been coming together which made it even better! I’m not really sure how the romance will end up in this series either as there are two potential love interests for Everly. Neither of them appear to be a better match over the other in reasons to go for a relationship nor in reasons to stay away from forming that kind of relationship in this particular book. Honestly, I’m not even sure who I’d prefer of the two at this point either so I am very eager to discover more about both characters and Everly in the next book!

Summary:

Everly Hart has been taught many techniques to escape or fight back an opponent & to observe everything with her father’s guiding. To Everly, it looked like her detective father was just being overly cautious in teaching his daughter how to defend herself and be aware of her surroundings. Until everything in her life turns upside down…

Now, Everly knows of a whole new world that was once hidden to her. One that it much more dangerous and deadly than the one she thought she knew…

Everly discovers that she is a griever which is a person who has the ability to see what most can’t, that there are dangerous grimms among them that want to torment and hunt humans. As a griever, Everly has the duty to hunt the grimms down and capture them in order to allow other humans to continue living their lives.

But Everly is just starting to learn her new skills when an investigation into a string of murders in the woods prickle at her curiosity. Something doesn’t seem to be matching up with the police’s reports to the media compared to what she knew her father had been investigating. And with new information in her hands about the world of grimms and grievers, Everly has a sneaking suspicion that her two worlds are colliding head on. Now she just needs to follow the clues and prove herself right…

***  There will be minor spoilers for the beginning of this book ***

I wanted to listen to this audiobook because I liked the concept of a girl who witnesses a tragic death which causes her to be able to see supernatural beings.  This series is three books long.  The first came out in 2023.  The audiobook of book one was released on October 29th.  I managed to listen to 22% of 324 pages (about 71).

This was a mismatch from the start but because it was a review copy, I wanted to try and finish it.  The first problem was the narrator, Amy McFadden.  The main character, Everly, is 17 but the voice used was kinda breathy and high pitched.  It made me feel like her character was much younger than 17.  The writing style also gave that impression.

Then there is the opening chapter.  Everly is trying to escape her kidnapper and is trying to make it out of the basement before he comes back.  She doesn't make it.  Then it is revealed that the kidnapper is actually her father, the detective, and this is part of the training that he has been giving her his whole life.  Ummm what?  And no, the explanation did not make this feel any better for me.

Then the tragic death occurs.  Dad has cancer which he is hiding from his daughter and she only finds out when he is put into hospice at the hospital.  Her magical abilities come from the fact that she sees him die there.  But wait!  Turns out she is from a family of magical people who can see Grimms or monsters and is supposed to become a monster fighter.  Dad's crazy treatment of his daughter was supposed to train her to be ready to fight.

But even then, there is no helpful explanations for Everly.  She has to break into a secret shed/office to begin the search after a Grimm almost kills her.  Then her grandmother comes in with kinda unhelpful information.  Turns out she has to go the Academy to learn about Grimms and how to fight them.  Ummm what?

Everly was about to enter the academy at 22% mark when I stopped.  I did read some reviews for the first book.  I am in the minority as folks loved this and the love triangle in it.  So it could be me and not the book.  Again, pick it up if the blurb appeals.  Arrr!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Thank you to Netgalley and RBmedia for an ARC of the audiobook

The Grimm Society by Chanda Hahn weaves an intriguing mystery with a twist that truly surprises, creating an engaging story that will keep readers on edge. The main plot is well-crafted, and the central mystery unfolds with a steady buildup of suspense, making it difficult to step away from the story. Hahn’s characters are vibrant and enjoyable, with the protagonist and supporting cast each bringing something unique to the table. Their development across the story lends depth and believability, making readers want to root for them.

That said, I found certain aspects of the audiobook detracted from the overall experience. The narrator's voice, unfortunately, was a bit flat, lacking the expressive tone needed to bring Hahn’s characters to life. At times, I felt more distracted than drawn in by the narration, as it seemed to lack the energy and dynamism the story deserved. This may, in part, be due to some moments where the writing feels a bit immature, with descriptions and transitions sometimes feeling choppy or abrupt.

The frequent brand-name dropping throughout the book—especially Starbucks—feels unnecessary and, at times, excessive, pulling attention away from the story. Coffee orders and makeup brands were used to describe someone’s personality, at times making the MC seem judgmental over something so trivial. While it’s a minor detail, it does detract slightly from the overall immersion.

Grammar and language also presented minor issues, with occasional incorrect grammar that interrupted the flow. Despite these stylistic setbacks, the main storyline and the unexpected twist at the end make The Grimm Society a compelling read. Hahn does an excellent job crafting a mystery that feels fresh and keeps the reader guessing until the end, and her characters ultimately make this book worthwhile. For fans of YA mysteries, this one has plenty of intrigue and some strong character moments making it a worthwhile read.
