After fifteen years of tending goal for the Boston Rebels, I’m known for two things: the highest save percentage in the league, and never spending more than one night with the same woman.
I’m definitely not the guy you should trust with your best friend’s little sister. Especially not when that sister, Jules, is eight years younger and my new roommate.
When I witness her on the verge of a panic attack while being intimidated by another man, I don’t think twice about calling her my fiancée and kissing her. Which brings me to the third thing I’m known for: reckless and impulsive decision-making.
After a video of that steamy kiss goes viral, the whole world is convinced we’re engaged. If we don’t play along, I risk losing my place as the starting goalie for the Rebels, and Jules’s reputation and career could tank.
Our engagement may be fake, but the memories of the way she tastes, and the feel of her body wrapped around mine, are all too real. And the more time we spend together, the less it feels like pretending.
None of the secrets from my past seem to matter as much when I’m with her. It turns out, Jules may have some secrets of her own – and uncovering them just might be what heals me…or what finally breaks me.
Julia grew up on the warm and sunny West Coast, but her first decision as an adult was to trade her flip-flops for snow boots and move to Boston.
She’s been enjoying everything that New England has to offer for over two decades, and now that she’s acclimated to the snowy winters and finally found all the places to get good sushi and tacos, she has zero regrets.
You can usually find her in front of her computer, but when she stops writing she’s most likely to be found outdoors, preferably with a pair of skis or snowshoes strapped to her feet in winter, or on a paddleboard in the summer.
did i read that right? he slept with THOUSANDS of women?! omfg! this guy is the worst and so freaking gross 🤢 and this has the reformed manwhore trope.
yeah, i don't think any sane woman with self-respect and self-preservation should even look in the way of this walking std 🤮 they should run for the hills, like way way too far away from this hoe.
Julia can really do no wrong in my eyes. I was instantly hooked with this one and couldn’t put it down. This is the second book in Julia’s Boston Rebels series.
This story follows Jules and Colt. Jules Flynn has crushed on Mathieu Colter, aka Colt, for a long time. Too long, in fact, as she's felt unable to move ahead from these ill-advised feelings for her older brother's best friend, who obviously does not return those feelings in any way, shape, or form. 6 years later some circumstances end up throwing them together with Colt ending up having to live with her for a bit. After another incident they are now fake engaged…but the longer they pretend they more the lines begin to blur.
I just loved the story between Colt and Jules. Their push and pull was funny, sweet and emotional. I loved that Julia slowly uncovered what happened in each of their pasts to make them the way they are. This is such a slooow burn…but in the most delicious way. I loved seeing Colt pull back Jules’ layers and once you get to the spice….PHEW!! You will not be disappointed. Their chemistry is top notch.
Thank you Julia for an eARC.

Heroine accidentally drunk marries a hockey bro in Vegas and then spends the next six years acting like she was an assault victim in the aftermath. ("I can't have feelings for yet another bro, because of *what happened in Vegas*") Somehow, this book is Utah mom Stanley mug coded because of this and no, I will not be taking questions at this time Denise I will just be eye rolling myself across the high plains while trying to hit every cactus in my path.
I thought nothing could top Center Ice for me until I started this audio! It completely blew me away! 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐬 did such a beautiful job on this book, I'm going to be squealing about it for a very long time! There was just something about the relationship between 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐭 and 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬. It's so perfect. The build-up on their relationship was flawlessly done.
I freaken adored 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬 character! We first meet her in Center Ice, where she comes off as snarky with zero filter. But the way she SHINED in this book was unreal. And the more you get to know her the more you can't help but fall in love with her character. You learn the way her mind works and why she comes off as cold sometimes. She's easily one of my favorite FMCs I've ever read about this year. Julia did such an incredible job on her character development! She was beautiful, strong, and hilarious.
𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐭 character was an absolute smoke show! This man helped check off all my favorite tropes! I LOVE a reformed playboy! Colt went from being known as the team playboy to "he only has eyes for her" and man was I obsessed with the way he was obsessed with Jules. He was jealous and possessive with a VERYYYYY dirty mouth!
But as much I loved his character my heart broke for Jules in the beginning watching her pine over him. He was her childhood crush. And I'm sure you can imagine how hard it was for her to watch her childhood crush be the playboy he was. 😭 But VERY quickly this man did a complete 180 into such a swoon-worthy MMC! 𝗜 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗪𝗢𝗢𝗡 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘆!!! 👏👏 He gave Jules the man she deserved.
I loved watching Colt finally "𝘀𝗲𝗲" Jules after years of just viewing her as his best friend's little sister. Suddenly he couldn't stop himself from checking her out. It was so much fun to watch him suddenly notice her! I loved the way their relationship was built and built until they both caved! Because that "fuck it" moment between the two of them was iconic! I LOVED the chemistry between these two!
I'm so excited for the next book in the Boston Rebels series!! 🥰 Julia is now an auto-buy author for me!!
I'm going to start by saying Julia KNOWS how to pick her narrators! Because these two brought this book to life sooo well! And I thought the same thing about Center Ice too!
They were perfectly cast. I've always been a HUGE fan of 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐦. But them together as Colt and Jules PERFECTION 😍😍
𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐫 as Colt was insanely hot! His performance was INCREDIBLE! He truly nailed every part of Colt, his playboy side, his possessive growly side, as well as his tender side. I've said it before and I'll say it every time! BUT I FUCKING LOVE listening to this man growl "𝐅𝐮𝐮𝐮𝐮𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐤𝐤𝐤!" I melt every time! MY gosh! Colt had a DIRTY mouth and Connor did indeed crushhhh those scenes 🥵🥵 𝐅𝐋𝐀𝐖𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐋𝐘!
𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚, girl, you were the perfect Jules. The second I started listening to this audiobook I immediately messaged a few girl friends blown away by how perfect Stella was as Jules. She made Jules 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞! She brought her character to life so beautifully. Perfectly unloading all of Jules fears and making us fully fall in love with Jules.
I'm just blown away by how perfect this audio was. I need more!! I already know this book will become a 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧 for me!
What to Expect: - Hockey Romance - Brother's Best Friend - Age Gap - Fake Engagement - Reformed Playboy - Forced Proximity - Virgin FMC - No Third Act Breakup - Slow Burn
Fake Shot is the second book in the Boston Rebels series and tells the story of Colt and Jules. Colt and Jules were introduced in Center Ice (book one). However, this book can be read as a standalone. In Center Ice, it is clear that something is going on with Colt and Jules. Now we know they have a history that started in Vegas years ago. Jules has always had a crush on Colt, but he only saw her as his best friend's little sister. When circumstances lead to Colt moving in with Jules, he realizes she is not a kid anymore. What happens next? A fake engagement, of course! As they spend more time together, they stop pretending, and things become more real than ever imagined.
I loved Colt and Jules together! They have amazing chemistry and are exactly what each other needs. From the outside looking in, Colt is a playboy star hockey player who doesn't do relationships, but as we peel back his layers, we see there is more to him than the facade he allows the world to see. Jules is a strong female entrepreneur who works in a male-dominated industry. I love that the story highlighted her struggles with this and her efforts to create more space for other women to enter the field. I loved that Colt helped break down the walls Jules built up due to her past and showed her he was a man she could trust with her heart. This is definitely a slow burn, but it's worth it. Colt and Jules learn to be vulnerable with each other, and the evolution of their relationship is beautiful to witness.
Fake Shot is a great second book in this series. It is the perfect hockey romance, with heat and swoon-worthy moments. I'm excited to see what is planned for book three.
Narration: Stella Bloom and Connor Crais did a phenomenal job narrating this story. They are incredible storytellers and the perfect voices for Jules and Colt. Stella and Connor really brought the characters to life, truly capturing all of the emotions and pulling me into the story. I read an early copy of this book back in June, and listening to this audiobook made me fall in love with the characters even more.
Thanks to Julia Connors and Wordsmith Publicity for the eARC and ALC. Opinions expressed are my own.
2.75⭐️ ugh. First book by this author and sadly I don’t think I’ll be back for more. When colt confirmed he’s slept with THOUSANDS of women.. that was so beyond gross. I’m all for a reformed bad boy but… yikes. Also, he’s never had sex without a condom? Why did he need a paternity test then? He was in a committed relationship- I felt the author just wanted a first for him too. Jules- ugh Jules, I thought the drama in Vegas was so over hyped… I just this entire book was just a big question mark to me.
Julia does it again with this book!!! Let's see, I've been wanting to read Jules' book since Jameson's (On the Line) book, and let's say this book did more than well for me.
The relationship between Jules and Colt was good, he was her crush since teenage years, being her brother's best friend and former teammate is completely forbidden, in addition to some actions by Colt that led Jules to make some bad decisions, she decided to forget him, time passes and due to life situations our boy has to live with Jules for a while and this is where everything gets good.
Something I love about the forced proximity trope is the tension between the protagonists and here they gave it to me 100%, although not from the beginning, you see how these two are falling, also with the fake engagement it's a good formula.
Jules seemed to me a strong fmc, let's see, I loved her from the first moment I read her, all her work to help women in a field that is dominated by men, how she is with her family, with herself who knows what she wants, let me tell you that I loved her, that simple.Colt on the other hand, oh god, this man at times got on my nerves but in a good way, how attentive was he with Jules? His whole story with his family? His story made me angry, I won't lie to you.
Was it slow? Yes, but I liked it, I liked everything and I just wanted to keep reading them both because they were very cute together (although they didn't want to), seeing them get to where they got was so nice because you feel they took their time.
Without a doubt, Julia knows how to make me fall in love with her stories and I can't wait for the next one.
📌 I received an e-arc, and this is my honest opinion/review of it.
---
What happens when your brother’s best friend, who you’ve had a huge unrequited crush on for years, ends up moving in with you? He finally realizes you aren’t a little kid anymore, gets his head out of his ass, and sees you for the amazing woman you are… oh, and you end up in a fake engagement 👀
I loved Colt and Jules. He is the playboy who has so much more depth to him than he allows the world to discover, but Jules sees right through the facade. She is the take charge entrepreneur who puts on the toughest exterior with walls miles high, and Colt is the only one able to break through them. This is definitely a slow burn, but I didn’t even mind because their build up and the way they fall in love was perfect. They both finally find the person who completes them.
This was such a great continuation of the Boston Rebels series and now that I see where book 3 is about to go… *insert grabby hands*
*reread on audio* what a fabulous audiobook! I think hearing the performers bring Jules and Colt to life made me love this one even more. Connor Crais and Stella Bloom are two of my favorite audiobook narrators, and this one was no exception.
2.75 ⭐️ it really pains me to rate a Julia book so low. This was not it for me.
Vegas - it was almost the 60% point of the book before we find out what happened. How is this Colt’s fault?? Jules saying this is what lead her to not date and needing control over everything felt like a big stretch.
I love fake dating and I like an age gap too. What I don’t like about an age gap is if they knew each other when one was a minor. It’s just a little too weird for me.
It’s a slow burn but it was annoying. They both kept sending each other mixed signals. He’s always seen her as a sister and then one afternoon (literally) he sees her as more. There wasn’t any chemistry for me.
Colt was a poor match for Jules. He slept with thousands of women?! And because he hasn’t in 6 months he deserves applause? Yeah, no.
i’m nothing but a fan of the flynn family and i’m SO happy jules (my fav) finally has her book <33
jules & colt’s story was truly amazing. they had such great banter & chemistry, but also a necessary vulnerability because they both were dealing with past issues that they needed to work through & heal from. everything about them was just good they they worked so well together and i love them so much <3
and the setup for the next book throughout this was so subtle and the hints were perfectly sprinkled for you to figure out who the next couple is. i CANNOT wait for them!!!!!
What I’m Starry-Eyed Over: 🤩 Audiobook update: I love this story, and these narrators bring out the sexual tension and feels so very hotly and emotionally!! 🤩 I don’t think it gets better than this combination of my favorite tropes: fake dating, brother’s best friend (forbidden), and forced proximity. It’s done so fresh and fun! When protective Colt shows up! 🤩 Plus add hockey romance with some real rink and in the stands time. I love when Jules wears Colt’s jersey, and he spins his finger to have her spin in the bleachers. And I literally cried over a goal, like an actual hockey puck making a goal. 🤩 I love Jules and Colt so much and feel all the longing for them to be healed and let themselves love and be loved. 🤩 That need to know in an amazing plot. And the need for them to open up to each other. 🤩 She’s always had the secret crush and is a virgin, but he’s a reformed playboy & falls hard. 🤩 Beautiful themes of “girl boss,” women supporting women, and women in male-dominant fields. 🤩 Slow burn, unwanted attraction, amazing banter, teasing, and flirting. The tension in their fake touches. And when they finally touch for real, they are smokin’ hot! 🤩 When Colt whispers in Jules’ ear while they ring shop. I melted right then and there too. 🤩 Dirty thoughts and self-exploration.
What I’m Wishing/Dizzy About: 💫 It totally works as a standalone, but there are many people to keep track of, some characters from other books.
I love hockey romances and have newly discovered Julia Connors' books. Fake Shot is book 2 in the Boston Rebels series. I loved Center Ice, the first book and was excited for book 2. I listened to the audio, and I loved how the narrators brought the characters to life. Connor Crais and Stella Bloom told Colt and Jules' story to perfection. I felt the emotions of the characters and they told the story, that kept me glued to every word. The characters connection was felt with every word and action. Colt is a professional hockey player, and the best friend of Jules' brother. Jameson has told Colt many times that Jules is off limits. He has tried to stay away but would do anything to protect her. Colt has been burned by a relationship in the past. Jules works with her sister Audrey and the two have made a great business and run an all women one. They help to also give women a new start with their non-profit. Jules has trust issues. A mistake marriage at nineteen, a crush on Colt for much of her life, Jules wants Colt, but will he give in. After a night of Colt trying to protect Jules, a fake relationship starts. While their relationship starts as friends and fake fiancées, it turns into a lot of electric embraces, and the two must learn how to trust, how to open their hearts and give in to real love. I just loved Jules and her character's growth. And Colt, he was the best you could ask for. Together these two were everything and more! If you are a fan of hockey romances, Julia Connors is a must!
I listened to the audiobook, and it was amazing! I enjoyed both narrators. They fit both characters and the story.
Jules and Colt have known each other for years. Colt is a player to the max, and Jules keeps a tight leash on what she does. Jules is Colt's best friends little sister. They were pretty close years ago. Until one night changed everything. Now, all they do is tease, avoid, and banter.
But when Colt needs a place to stay, his best friend offers a solution. The house where he and his sisters grew up. The one where just Jules lives now. Whew! The dislike is for real. On Jules' side. We don't know until later on what exactly happened on that one night years ago. And complicated it is. It still affects Jules all these years later.
So, how do two people who barely know each other now live peacefully together? And the complications just get bigger when a kiss goes viral. It puts Colts' position with his team in jeopardy and Jules's thriving charty work and job at risk.
So what's a couple to do but to look legitimate? It's all good, right? Even if real feelings pop in. And Colt is warned away from Jules because, of course, a player like him would never be serious about someone.
I enjoyed how each of them fell for the other and how intertwined they become. When Colt finally realizes what's been in front of him... and when Jules realizes there's a reason Colt is the way he is...
First offense: An age gap where the MMC has known her since she was 10 is just gross.
Second offense: I do not like the fmc at all. This girl spends most of the book being mad the mmc is just not that into her which is secondhand embarrassing. The fmc constantly throws herself at the mmc and makes him feel guilty for not wanting her the same way she wants him —manipulative.
Third offense: The mmc randomly falls in love with the fmc after years of seeing her as a sister—there was no smooth transition with this.
Fourth offense: making this girl pine over this man for 9 years thus preventing her from finding any sort of happiness with any other man (until he finally wants her) is just cruel.
Despite my issues with the story itself I will say that the audiobook performances are good
This is my first book by Julia Connors and I'm super grateful to her and Wordsmith Pr for accepting me to receive this ALC.
Jules was having a huge crush for his brother's best friend, Colt, since her teenage years. Even after years have passed, that crush is still there and impossible to dismiss. But Colt had never given her any signs that he feels the same. In fact, that was something he hidded way too well, because he definitely felt attracted to her but he knew better than that and he didn't want to break the promise he gave to her brother: to never touch her because he knew he was a player and didn't deserve her. Keeping his promise will become even harder when he is forced to move in with her, after his place is ruined and where he definitely couldn't stay anymore.
Both Jules and Colt have some past issues which influenced their actual mental state. Jules did a pretty foolish mistake in Las Vegas, when she was younger. Since then, it's hard to trust herself anymore and she is working on fixing this with therapy. Colt had some things that happened in his past which made him fall in a spiral of one night stands. It was hard for him to trust someone else and let them in his heart. That's until the walls are crumbled down by Jules and either of them could resist the obvious attraction.
I liked that it wasn't focused only on the romance side, but also on them as individuals. The way they wanted to be better and help the people around them. The mental health was a also a sensitive part. Taking care of yourself is the main step before anything else.
It was a nice read, loving this forbidden love story. The hockey side was so much fun to follow, Colt being the goal keeper of the team. I'm looking forward to read other books by the author.
Move over Drew and Aubrey, Colt and Jules are coming in HOT and stealing my heart! The way I just devoured this story is everything. Fake Shot is book 2 in the Boston Rebels series, and can be enjoyed as a stand-alone, although i loved book 1 and I would recommend listening so you too can fall in love with ALL of these characters, their sweet found family, and the friendships they all have. Following Jules and Mathieu Colter “Colt” who have know each other for 15 years. Colt is Jules’ big brother’s best friend and plays for the Boston Rebels and Jules an entrepreneur trying to make big moves in her industry and motivating women along the way. 6 years ago, Jules found herself lusting over Colt, but at the time the playboy hockey star only saw her as his best friends little sister and in that moment she swore off Colt and made some reckless decisions in response. Now present day, Jules is still holding on to the past traumas and not only now living with Colt, she is FAKE engaged to him. Ohh my heart the way this story went from angsty to motivational to striaght up swoony had me grinning from ear to ear. The way these two broke down walls and barriers that have been cemented in place for so many years was beautiful. Not only forming a special friendship but the trust and protection they earned from each other had me rooting for their HEA. Connor Crias and Stella Bloom were perfection. Stella brought the perfect tone to express the hesitation, the hurt and the pain Jules has been caring around. Jules was a strong independent women but she held onto a lot of inner struggles and Stella was able to truly make us feel those struggles. The moment Jules started to trust what was happening around her, her confidence radiated and Stella brought out our girls sexy, sassy, playful side as well as the loving, caring sister and friend she was. Connor Crais really gave us Colts personality from the very beginning, a fun loving guy who also struggled with past heart break yet was always there for the ones closet to him, Connor expressed the growth Colt was going through and it was so sweet to hear him come to realization to what he was looking for in life. Connor also brought every ounce of flirty teasing banter that made you understand how Jules couldn’t resist his charm leaving you to root for this former playboy and his best friend’s little sister.
Thank You @wordsmithpublicity and Julia Connors for the opportunity to listen and review.
Julia Connors can do no wrong. I loved this 'hiding in plain sight' vibe we got from Jules and Colt and the squealing and squirming was so good, I loved every minute of it!
I loved Colt's tenacity. He just kind of planted himself in Jules's life and stuck around until she caught up. I didn't love how obvious he was for so long, but I think that was just part of his journey. His oblivion to Jules and her feelings from years ago was a bit annoying, but I get how Julia was showing us the then verses now. Because when he caught up, he was all in- 100%.
Brother's Best Friend is a favorite trope of mine, and I loved how this one played out. I loved how everything was just 'so convenient' and Jameson and Audrey just kind of went along with the narrative that Colt and Jules fed them. I loved how it all came to hilt and all the drama in the end was so much fun to read!
I also found the pasts/backstories of Jules and Colt interesting. There were a lot of barriers to break down in Jules for Colt, and I loved how he embraced the long game with her. After his years of oblivion, he needed to work for it a good bit to bridge the gap between then and now.
Overall, I am still obsessed with Julia Connors and her books and her stories and everything really about her. Rereading the Frozen Hearts series will be happening for me in June, and reading this wonderful ARC pumped me up even more for it! 4.5 Stars Rounded Up
FAKE SHOT is the second in Julia Connors' Boston Rebels hockey series. Jules Flynn has crushed on Mathieu Colter, aka Colt, for a long time. Too long, in fact, as she's felt unable to move ahead from these ill-advised feelings for her older brother's best friend, who obviously does not return those feelings in any way, shape, or form.
Life and circumstances conspire to throw them together, half a dozen years later, so that he's temporarily living in her brother's old apartment in their childhood home, now hers. Before too long, they're finding that they've at least a friendship of sorts, and then before they know it, they're fake engaged, only now they're both feeling... entirely too NOT at all pretend about things.
Julia Connors' writing is page-turning, and her characters' emotions vulnerabilities feel all too real. Jules very much has a tender side despite the cool, competent successful contractor-in-a-man's-world image she tends to present, and Colt very much does as well, though he guards his behind a devil-may-care player front. When Colt finally recognizes the depths of his feelings, I loved how all in he is, and I loved his determination to be there for Jules, come what may. She's safe to reveal herself fully, as he is to her, and once they both realize this, all bets are off.
I really enjoyed this older-brother's best friend, reformed rake, fake relationship story, and cannot wait for the next in this terrific series.
3.5⭐ Jules and Colt were more frustrating than cute for me. I was frustrated by the sheer amount of times Colt's promiscuous past was mentioned, and also thrown in his face. His brother and ex-girlfriend storyline, not cool. Then Jules' Vegas storyline... I don't even know. The "conflict" made me roll my eyes. On a positive note, it was minor and dealt with rather quickly, but it's an overdone one for sure.
I liked the two of them together, but Jules and Colt getting to their happy ending wasn't a happy journey for me. I didn't hate the characters, I didn't hate all of the circumstances and storylines. There were just some I didn't love. I loved the Our House foundation and how badass Jules and her sister were in their business. I liked how the brother's best friend angle was handled. All in all, it was good not great.
Fake Shot is the 2nd book in Julia’s Boston Rebel series. I just loved Jules & Colt together. Their story was sweet, funny and their chemistry was so good. The banter and tension between the two was so much fun.

I highly recommend the audio. Connor Crais and Stella Bloom were amazing.
Julia can do no wrong. I already knew this but I’m just being reminded. This was great from start to finish. My only issue is that this man is blonde.
I think about Center Ice at least once a week and this really was a great #2 for the series. The Flynn family is so fun I’m sad there are no more siblings to read about
I listened to this book on audio and let me tell you it is a very good audiobook ! I love a good hockey book and Julia Connors knows how to write a hockey book! Jules and Colton they have very good chemistry in this book! Stella Bloom & Connor Caris they played Jules & Colton really well! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good hockey romance book!
3 💫 ANOTHER HOCKEY BOOK THAT IS 4 ME!!! Love the enemies to lovers and fake engagement trope! These books potentially are making me dumber and I REFUSE to stop reading them. Can’t recommend enough. So pumped for the next in the series which was conveniently hinted at towards the end of this book.
