As with all of the books in the Off the Grid: FBI series, Lethal Game starts strong, is fast-paced and complex, and kept me guessing (and biting my nails!) I loved Alisa and Jason, was delighted to reconnect with other FBI agents from previous books, and enjoyed the intriguing story. A Barbara Freethy book never disappoints!
Another fast-paced romantic suspense with all the twists I couldn’t predict! I mean the gasps I gasped! Jason & Alisa meet when Jason saves her life. Their paths continue to cross until they can’t avoid each other. I love the determination Alisa has—the way she’s right there with Jason in the midst of the action. I always swoon for Barbara’s heroes and the way they swoop in. Jason & Alisa make the best team, and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time!
[ARC from Barbara in exchange for an honest review]
They just keep getting better and better. So much suspense kept me glued to every page. Awesome characters. Alisa and Jason were so good together and quite “explosive.” Keep writing, Barbara, and I’ll keep reading. ❤️
Barbara Freethy has done it again! I absolutely loved Lethal Game by Barbara Freethy, the fourteenth book in her Off the Grid: FBI series. Barbara Freethy has once again delivered an incredible romantic thriller with Lethal Game and has provided her readers with amazing characters; I love all the characters in Lethal Game! Who does not love hot, sexy men and strong, passionate women? Lethal Game was an incredible romantic thriller, and I loved every moment on every page, it was impossible to put it down. Lethal Game is one of the most enjoyable books that I have read recently. It was an amazing story, and I highly recommend it. I love how Barbara Freethy somehow manages to find the "perfect" heroine, who is a strong woman on her own, to balance out the career focused FBI agent. Lethal Game is filled with heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. Lethal Game is filled with everything that I have come to love and expect in a Barbara Freethy romantic suspense love story, especially the poignant and bittersweet moments that filled this page turner. Lethal Game had me guessing throughout the story as to who was behind the riveting events that took place in this story. The identity of who was behind the events in this story including the death of Jason’s father’s death was truly a surprise when it was revealed. I enjoy how the book is told from the perspective of the main characters. I love getting the insight and feelings from the different characters. Barbara Freethy has once again proven that she is a master storyteller and continues to be a must-read author for me. Lethal Game is the story of Jason Colter, an FBI agent and Alisa Hunt, nurse. Jason has been assigned to Flynn MacKenzie’s elite FBI task force when he learned the terrorist behind his father’s murder and his partner’s injuries, Arseni Novikov has recently arrived in L.A. Jason tells Flynn that he is looking for justice and not revenge for his father’s death. Alisa’s mother is in the hospital with a mysterious illness and soon determines that her father is missing. Alisa and Jason meet when Jason saves Alisa from an attempted carjacking. Another attempt was made on Alisa’s life when the brakes on her car were tampered with and once again Jason comes to her rescue since he was driving her car. They soon learn that Alisa’s mother was being poisoned and was moved to a secure wing. Alisa was moved to a safe house. As Alisa and Jason investigate who is behind her mother’s poisoning, they learn that it is connected to Jason’s case with finding Novikov. I love the easy banter of the conversations between them that flow so easily, and the secrets that Alisa and Jason share with each other. As they continue to spend time together, things change between them. I loved how the relationship between Jason and Alisa changes them, and that they are both willing to take a chance at love. I really enjoy the poignant and bittersweet moments, the plot twists, and the surprises that fill this page turner that I have come to love and expect in Barbara Freethy's books and Lethal Game did not disappoint. I love how they solved the mystery of Alisa’s father’s disappearance and his role in resolving the plot twist, captured Novikov, and determined who killed Jason’s father. I love the ending of Alisa and Jason’s love story, and the changes that Jason is willing to make in his career to have a life with Alisa. I love how all the loose ends get tied up and the revelation of who was behind all the events in the book, especially the death of Jason’s father. I love all the characters and the way Barbara describes the locations in Los Angeles and the surrounding areas. Reading Lethal Game felt like a family reunion, I loved catching up with the other FBI agents in the series who assisted Jason in this case. I received an advanced copy from the author.
I was excited to read another installment of the "Off the Grid: FBI Series" as each story is such a wild ride. This did not disappoint.
Jason has been added to the FBI task force to catch an international terrorist. He is very familiar with FBI's most wanted as he was responsible for the death of his father, also an FBI agent, in the line of duty. He had suspected there was a mole in the organization but could never prove it. With the help of Flynn's special task force, he has learned that his nemesis has entered the country and is already on their radar with a path of destruction, and his fear is that is only the beginning. They have their first clue and, on their way, to check it out.
Alisa is ending her shift as a nurse and on her way home. As she is approaching her vehicle, she realizes she is being followed. She believes she is being carjacked and offers her keys, her car, but the assailant wants her to go with him. Jason hears a scream and witnesses the attack; he disarms the attacker and Alisa is safe.
This is how the story begins. Jason makes sure she is okay and leaves his business card in case she has any information she can share with him. They meet again the next day and an innocent chat raises red flags for Jason. He is beginning to realize that the carjacking may not have been a random act and the further he delves into Alisa's past, he realizes that she has information that will help his case.
There are more twists and turns as the two are in danger and the hits keep coming. I won't add any spoilers, but I can share that I read this in one sitting, I was engaged from the first chapter and the story grabbed me until the end.
Lethal Game by Barbara Freethy is another installment of her series called Off The Grid. In this book we are introduced to Jason Coulter as he and his team take on a heartless killer. The same heartless killer who killed his father. The series focuses on a team of people who work for the FBI on various specialty cases and how they work and follow leads. The team is based in Southern California.
Alisa Hunt is a nurse at a local hospital. In less than 48 hours, her whole world collapses. She has almost been kidnapped and killed, both times saved by Jason Coulter. Her father is missing, her mother is in the hospital with an undiagnosable illness, and her childhood home has been burned to the ground. Obviously something is going on with their family. Is she the key to Jason Coulter’s newest case?
Jason Coulter takes her under his protection as he tries to navigate the case he is on and how Alisa fits into the case. There are so many people demanding answers and Jason begins to question who is on what side. The story takes some interesting twists and turns while Alisa and Jason start to fall for each other while trying to solve the case.
As always, Barbara Freethy’s stories are full of people who passionately want to keep the world safe from mad men, while finding their true love. Her stories epitomize the genre of romantic suspense. Lethal Game by Barbara Freethy is a great read.
Lethal Game is the latest installment in the FBI Off the Grid series. It can be read as a standalone, so if you haven’t read the previous books, you’re fine to jump into the series here.
Jason’s temporarily assigned to work with Flynn’s special unit, tracking down a terrorist he believed killed his father. Alisa Hunt is a nurse, whose mother is in the hospital suffering from a mysterious illness. But when Alisa’s attacked in the hospital parking garage and then other things start happening to her and her mother, Jason suspects she may be the key in finally catching the terrorist he’s been trying to bring to justice for years.
This is a gripping story that will keep a reader’s attention from beginning to end. It’s filled with a lot of suspense and plenty of twists and turns that will keep readers guessing to the end. I thought the suspense of the story was better than the actual romance, but because it was so well done, it didn’t really take away from my overall enjoyment of the book.
If you’re looking for a romantic suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this would be a book for you.
It is hard to believe there are now 14 books in this series, and every one of them is just awesome. If you like thrillers with lots of twists and turns and a side of romance, these books are for you! Barbara Freethy is a talented writer who keeps you guessing, but also gives you great characters that get you really invested in their outcome. FBI agent Jason is chasing a Russian terrorist that killed his father 3 years ago. Alisa is a nurse, who survives an attempted carjacking while leaving work one evening, thanks to Jason & his partner just happening to be in the hospital parking garage checking out a lead on their case. Originally thought to be a random wrong place/wrong time attack, it soon becomes apparent that Alisa was the actual target, and she is somehow tied to Jason's terrorist. Jason & Alisa work together to solve the mystery, and give in to their undeniable attraction for each other. This book had another of Barbara's "wow, I didn't see that coming" moments, and I loved it!
I have enjoyed every one of Barbara Freethy’s books in the FBI Series Off the Grid, and LETHAL GAME is no exception. Freethy excels at writing tight mysteries with a pleasant side of romance. Alisa Hunt is a typical career woman. She starting her nursing career while living in a studio apartment. She’s worried about her mom, who is in the hospital. And she has no idea how her life will change when she’s the victim of an attempted carjacking. Luckily for Alisa, FBI Agent Jason Colter is close enough to stop the carjacking, and soon realizes that Alisa may hold clues to the case he’s on. I loved Alisa, a woman who doesn’t always display the strength she obviously has, given all the secrets she must confront. She doesn’t break down and doesn’t shy away, just faces them head on. Colter, meanwhile, wrestles with the emotions that Alisa stirs in him while he works to put the pieces together to solve his case. It’s easy to get lost in LETHAL GAME, following the clues and the twists and turns before a satisfying conclusion.
This is another exciting, suspenseful love story that I didn’t want to put down. Alisa was a nurse where her mother was in the hospital with something wrong that the doctors had a hard time determining what was causing her problem. I couldn’t believe the “accidents” that was happening to her. Luckily FBI Jason Colter was there to save her. Jason and the FBI team he was on was looking for a terrorist that he determined Alisa had some connection to. It was so exciting how the clues started coming together to determine what was happening to Alisa and her mother. Alisa was shocked to find out the secrets of her father’s past. Alisa’s mother knew her husband had a dark past he never told her about, but she was so in love with him that she didn’t care he was keeping a secret. I enjoyed watching Alisa and Jason become closer personally with all they went through. I loved the book and strongly encourage you to read it.
Alisa thought she lived a normal, rather boring life until her mom was sick in the hospital, her dad had disappeared, and she was almost kidnapped leaving her job. These circumstances brought Jason into her life. There was an instant connection between them, but he was very upfront that he was a workaholic and didn't have the time or energy for relationship. As more things happened and Jason saved her life a second time, they start to put all the pieces of the puzzle together and the road to why her life was upside down took many twists. Will they make it out alive and if so, do they have a future together?? This may be the 14th book in this series but each and every one is a page turner. It's nice to catch up with the characters from previous books and see how they work together and solve each mystery. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving my review.
Whew, Lethal Game definitely kept me on the edge of my seat! What I love about the Off the Grid: FBI series is that each book can be read as a stand alone. I jumped mid series and the author focuses on a new couple in each book and I have enjoyed them.
For this book, the story follows Alisa Hunt and FBI agent Jason Colter. Alisa works at the hospital and on her way back to the car there is an attempt made on her and from there this is where the mystery begins. Not only does Alisa need to worry about herself. She also has to worry about her parents. I really enjoyed the cat and mouse game, and while I figured out some things it still did not take away from the book as I furiously read this book in a day. This series is perfect for fans of mystery romance.
A very special thanks to the author for the gifted earc.
Another romantic suspense by Ms. Freethy? Yes please!
I love the Off the Grid series and this book is as the others, fast paced, with real world issues being told through the excellent story telling!
Nose to the grindstone, FBI agent Jason, is in the right place at the right time to help nurse Alisa in what is at first thought to be a random carjacking. As we read along, this is nothing random about Alisa's almost kidnapping or other issues that rear their heads.
As issues keep coming up, Alisa and Jason realize they are in the middle of an international incident involving Alisa's parents and Jason's late father. A real seat of your pants thriller as Alisa and Jason try to keep one step ahead of the bad guys who want to blow up a venue where world leaders will be in attendance!
Lethal Game is another tension building book in Barbara Freethy’s Off the Grid: FBI Series. This story focuses on the search by agent Jason Colter for the Russian terrorist who killed his father three years ago and left his then partner with an injury that ended her field career. The excitement starts early when Jason prevents the carnapping of nurse Alisa Hunt in a hospital parking garage and intensifies when it becomes apparent that she is somehow connected to his case. While this reader appreciates everything Ms. Freethy writes, her many mysteries are my favorites. They’re fast paced with lots of surprises, interesting characters and a heated romance. I voluntarily reviewed this book. Most highly recommend.
This was a fast paced romantic thriller that did not disappoint! Jason is an FBI agent who has been chasing down a bad guy for years, taking up where his father left off. As he’s following a tip, he comes into contact with a beautiful nurse named Alisa. As the story progresses it becomes apparent that Alisa might be tied up in everything going on with the investigation. As Jason keeps Alisa close they start to develop a connection, but in this story no one knows who to trust or what they can believe. I love a story that keeps me guessing until the end, what is going on and who is behind it all. Another great romantic thriller by Barbara Freethy that let those of us familiar with the series catch up with past favorites, but can also be read as a stand alone.
A perfect example of romantic suspense. The mix of action, mystery and romance was a perfect blend for me. The connection between Jason and Alisa was instant and strong. The intrigue and mystery was full of unexpected twists. There were a number of suspects and I enjoyed trying to figure out who was involved. Jason was a great hero, he was focused on his goal, but not completely blinded by achieving it. Alisa was a down to earth heroine and rolled with all the surprises well. I enjoyed the characters a lot. I've read some, but not all of the books in this series. They can be read out of order and standalone without losing any of the enjoyment. Be prepared to not want to stop reading once you start. I received an advance copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Lethal Game is a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat thriller that expertly combines heart-pounding action with a gripping romantic suspense. From the opening pages, where Alisa Hunt narrowly survives a violent carjacking, the story thrusts readers into a world of danger, betrayal, and secrets that refuse to stay buried. The pacing is relentless, keeping the tension high as Alisa discovers that her near-death experience was no random attack—someone is actively trying to kill her, and the reasons why may lie deep within the dark corners of her family’s past.
FBI agent Jason Colter is pursuing justice as he hunts the terrorist responsible for killing his father. His pursuit intertwines with Alisa, who becomes more than just a victim—she may hold the key to what Jason has been tracking for years.
The chemistry between Alisa and Jason is immediate and undeniable, and Freethy masterfully balances the simmering attraction between them with the high-stakes tension of the plot. Their romance is believable, built on trust forged under extreme circumstances, and adds an emotional depth to the book.
The plot is intricate and well-executed, filled with twists that kept me guessing. As Alisa and Jason delve deeper into the truth, they are pulled into a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, where every step forward brings them closer to danger. The stakes feel real, and the danger is palpable throughout.
I have read the entire series and this is another excellent addition!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy of this book.
Lethal Game is a great addition to the Off The Grid FBI series! As with all of previous FBI storylines, you are thrown right into the mystery and intrigue that keeps you captivated and guessing until the very end. And then throw in the intense chemistry between Alisa and Jason, you've got a book that you just can't put down.
It was great catching up with some previous characters from the previous FBI series.
If this is the first book in this series that you find, go ahead and jump right in as this book can be read as a stand alone. But I'm sure after reading this one, you'll be wanting to start at the very beginning and enjoying each suspenseful moment of the this fabulous series.
Another very suspenseful book in the FBI off the grid series. This book involves Jason who joins the FBI with the Hope of avenging his father’s death. He meets up with Alisa who seems to have some kind of connection to the man who killed his father. Alisa is worried because she can’t get a hold of her father and her mother’s in very serious condition in the hospital. An attempt to kidnap her draws Jason in to work with her to keep her safe and find out if this is all related to his father‘s death. As you can imagine romance between the two of them occurs. I highly recommend this book which will keep you on the edge of your seat until you finish it. I finished it in one day. I was so involved in the book.
Love all of Barbara Freethy’s books. While this is part of a series, definitely can be read as a stand alone book. Jason follows in his grandfather and father’s path by becoming an FBI agent. He is after a Russian terrorist that was responsible for his father’s death. When it becomes known that he is going to be in LA, Jason and his fellow FBI team members will do everything they can to capture him. Alisa thinks she has a boring life. After visiting her mom who is ill in the hospital she heads to get her car in the parking garage, only to get attacked. Luckily she is rescued by Jason, and thus begins the adventure of keeping Alisa safe, and to figure out what connection she has to the terrorist. Page turner as they run into various traps, and I was totally surprised by the ending. Absolutely loved it - kept me guessing trying to figure out how it would end. Loved the connection that Jason and Alisa develop as they continue on their journey.
I have not read all of the series, but I have enjoyed what I have read. Even though we know who the bad guy is from the start, the suspense was in how he was finally caught. The romance is there, but not over the top.
There were a few editing errors throughout the book. The one that stood out to me was "....Jason would have to detail with her betrayal." I don't think 'detail' was the right word. It should have been 'deal.' I read over that sentence a few times trying to make sense of it. Another thing I noticed was a name change. Flynn's book was Ruthless Cross. In that book his love interest was Callie. However, in this book he said his wife's name was Avery. Did something happen to Callie?
Lethal Game by Barbara Freethy. I extend thanks to the author and publisher for the Advanced Readers Copy that was gifted to me.
Lethal Game is book 14 in the Off the Grid: FBI Series. The author has hit another homerun with this book. Her development of the two many characters Alisa Hunt and Jason Colter is spot on. The build up of the suspense is excellent. I pride myself on almost always being able to figure out the whodunit well before the end of the book. This one had me on my toes to the end. I'm amazed how she can continue the write fresh new storylines. Ms. Freethy is so talented. I'm anxiously awaiting her next release.
Welcome back to the FBI, particularly this elite squad!
Jason is pulled into the squad for one particular case, he’s actually finishing a case his father started so it’s not only business it’s personal!
Alisa is having a horrible day when she leaves her job to go home. She is almost kidnapped, her mother has some mysterious illness. Nobody can figure out , and her dad has supposedly gone off to see a friend, so why was he leaving the family home right before it burned down?
How are all these pieces connected and why is Jason getting very involved with Alisa?
Romance, mystery, action! This book hooked me from the first chapter. It was a wild ride and a book you will not want to miss.!
In Lethal Game Alisa is a nurse who thinks she has lived a normal boring life and cannot understand why anyone would want to kidnap her or do her harm. Jason just happens to be in the right place at the right time and saves Alisa. Jason has been hunting down a most wanted man and thinks Alisa has connections that will help but she thinks that is impossible until she finds out her family has secrets. Ms Freethy really kept me guessing on this one and the end was a surprise, did not see that one coming. It was nice to get a visit with some characters from earlier books. Another well deserved 5 star rating.
Once again we are back in the high speed, crime fighting FBI series and this latest addition is incredible. The author draws us in with an exciting and thrilling storyline that has you hooked and holding onto the edge of your seat for dear life. Our characters are strong and likeable and has you rooting for them to get the answers they need to solve this mystery as they find themselves thrown together and the author knows just which buttons to push and when to push them. Action, suspense, intrigue and a little romance, this has it all and with the twists and turns and surprises thrown our way, it made it very hard to put this down once started.
Another thrilling story in this series! Alisa thought her life was boring, but after surviving a carjacking it turns out her family has some long dormant secrets coming to life. Jason is an FBI agent looking for a Russian terrorist that killed his father three years earlier. The terrorist is back in LA to carry out another attack and Jason and Alisa team up to save her family and many lives from the attack.
Great mix of romance and suspense and a great addition to this series. It can be read standalone, but I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
Thanks to the author for a review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Barbara did it again! Lethal Game has it all, steamy, hot men, strong, independent women, romance, and a twist here and there that will keep you on the edge of you seat the whole time.
Suspense is Barbara's forte. She knows how to draw the reader in and dive deep into the worlds she creates with her words. The reader will get hooked from the first page and not want to put the book down until the very last word.
Lethal Game is a great addition to the Off the Grid: FBI series. If you love suspense, twists and turns, amazing characters, and some romance thrown in there, this series is for you!
This is the 14th book in the Barbara Freethy Off the Grid series and it did not disappoint! Jason is an FBI agent who's on a mission to take down the man who killed his father. Alisa is a nurse in a hospital where her mom is currently being treated. Alisa gets attacked one day in the parking garage of the hospital, but Jason was there to rescue her. But Alisa finds out that what she thought was just a random carjacking may have been a lot more.
This story kept me on the edge of my seat! The suspense, intrigue and romance kept me turning page after page! I've always enjoyed Barbara Freethy's books, but this one is definitely one of my favorites!
I couldn't finish it. I bailed with about 40 pages left. The story/ plot itself wasnt bad. But omg the characters. The FMC was an absolute simpering imbecile. Her mother is not much better. They tried to craft a romance between the male lead and the female but it is so unbelievable bc the female was such a moron.
The dialogue was also infuriating to follow. No human speaks like that. And they uses each othern's names in EVERY SENTENCE.
I like Barbara Freethy and I like this series--until this book where I have no idea what happened but sounds like a conetely defferent author wrote it.
