“Do you prefer males of your species helpless? Judging from your anger now, is capability not attractive?” Vox’s eyes widened and she felt the full measure of his attention.

This threw Ava for a moment, making her blush in a different way than anger. Silence stretched for a beat before she responded, “We prefer not being lied to and taken advantage of."

Ava is human servant aboard an alien Phor transport spaceship. The ship specializes in transporting cargo and Ava tends to the engine. An alien Vorbax is brought on board to be transported to an enemy planet for a war crimes trial. But is he really a helpless prisoner? Why does Ava feel drawn to him? Will she become part of his plans? Now Ava is caught in the middle of something bigger than herself and certainly bigger than what the ship she's on can handle.

*2.5* I really liked the premise and wanted to enjoy the story, but it was underdeveloped. I had so many questions while reading and it was frustrating to feel like I got mixed answers.

Ava was born in a breeding center, as all humans are now, and sold as worker.

One of her sisters was sent off to an exotic zoo. Her mother’s tears never stopped during those days. It was a relief for Ava to end up here, with Ebel, in the Phor’s engine hall where none of the males had any interest in her.

Ava is asked to spy when a collaboration with another group brings some prisoners on board. These prisoners intrigue her. One of those prisoners becomes her love interest.

When the romance begins to develop, it was awkward and unappealing. Not to mention, the hero is in a marital contract with another female for the majority of the story.

There were too many inconsistencies throughout that left me frustrated and confused. Why is it stated she had a few previous “liaisons” yet she's a virgin with him? Maybe liaisons means something different to the author than it does to me.

I feel the author excelled at writing really great friendships, and the invention of the biologics was a wonderful addition to the story!

It's possible the story felt disjoined because it was originally a Kindle Vella? Idk, but it really didn’t flow very well.

The one thing that stood out to me in this read is how cozy it is. Don't get me wrong, there is an intricate, quite emotional plot going on that doesn't make this one of the genuine "cozy" books that seemed to have made themselves into their own genre, but the fact is: for all its science-fiction prowess, it doesn't read like one of the hardcore sci-fi titles that strive to build the universe from the roots up, which can be seen both as a detriment and as a plus I suppose - in my case, it was a plus. The book succeeds in lending rich descriptions only where it believes it's necessary, and doesn't delve too deep into its own world, which in the context of the book that's primarily led by the drama between its characters turned out to be just enough. The alien races, the enslavement of human race and others, the tension that's build in such an ugly state of the world - it's all done pretty well, and it had me rather excited to know more about the world. By the end of the book, I was invested.

The writing too, while honestly nothing to write home about (pun intended), seems to thrive in building up the friendships and various relationships between characters. Though the author steers clear of the flowery language for the vast majority of time, it doesn't take away from the storytelling skill - despite the simplicity of the written word, I found myself quite engrossed with the plot regarding the conditions humans are in, and emphatic towards Ava, who makes for an extremely likeable protagonist: she is as capable and smart as she is fun to watch in everything she does, and her friendship with Ebel and Nuor - one of her superiors, and a fellow 'indentured servant' - were the warmest, most emotional parts of the book.

You may notice I put a lot of emphasis on friendships.

Alas, the biggest complaint I have about this read is the romance itself. Though Vox himself is an okay character, I wouldn't considering him an overly engaging one, since he is quite stereotypical in his "male love interest" role. Though his cliché possessiveness and attendance to Ava actually have a genuinely good in-world reason to have developed as fast as they did, I can't say the same for Ava, who seems to have fallen head-over-heels for him for seemingly no other reason that "hot", which is only even more jarring when you reach the context in which it happens. I can't say anything because spoilers, but I think it would have seemed more natural if their relationship had only come as far as "friends" or even merely "respect", because that would for sure make the announced sequel that much more tense in regards to their relationship. It was all too soon, too sudden: as of right now, it feels largely once-sided from Vox's side, and quite shallow from Ava's, even though very little time is spent describing her as smitten with his physique - while her love is stated as genuine, it has no firm grounds to grow on, because even Ava wonders herself, until the very end of the book, what is it that makes Vox so appealing to her. You and me both Ava, you and me both.

I ended up 'shipping' Ava with Ebel: the chemistry between these two is flawless. Some of the things he does for her verge on the unrequited love trope, and she more than once states how much she cares for him despite their positions. I honestly wish the two would eventually, maybe, against all odds, find that they work great together when not in the clutches of the system that forces them to be a slave and a slaver. If you were to remove Vox as a clear love interest , and made the reader wonder, I would bet that we would all be eager to know: will Ava's love interest turn out to be the handsome, farmer-turned warrior Vox with the heart of gold, or her long-lasting friend, with whom she shares a very sweet and open bond but also a precarious tension considering their positions? Alas.

All in all not a bad read by any means: though the romance was lacking for me, the rest was very engaging, and I came out of it with a ship, which is always nice when you're a hopeless romantic.

Ava Greasemonkey follows the genre expectations set forth by other sci-fi authors that explore whether or not we will continuously find aliens attractive. Obviously the answer is yes or I would not be here.

Throughout the book she establishes several species with excellent descriptions that make it easy to imagine exactly what they look like. Ava herself serves in engineering so we also get to see some of the main systems and her working upon them. The world-building is centered around one ship so we get to see a lot of insight into how the species she works for manages and thrives in outer space. Which the Phor are truly a unique approach to the mechanical side which was truly refreshing.

Ava herself discovers her bravery throughout the novel and grows from subservient to daring. Her character growth is inspired by the plot line and also by her newfound interest in learning about the Vorbax.

The male lead, Vox, has already found himself but we see him find what he cannot live without. Lace goes with switching POV chapter so we get to see both sides of the relationship throughout the novel.

Overall it’s not overwhelming science fiction in the discussion of technology but it is an excellent leap into the genre of romantic sci-fi. There’s high stakes, some spice, a diverse cast of characters, and solid writing throughout.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Ruby Dixon as I think this is definitely comparable and an enjoyable read.

I've been reading Ava's story for a while. It started on Kindle Vella. I would label this a dark romance. The story between the MMC and the MFC is beautiful and heart warming. Their journey individually and together until they reach Xai, is brutal AF. There are a lot of triggers. I would check the authors pages just to make sure.
Ava, is doing her best to live as best she can, but she is a bred slave. Her mother, an Earth native, was a forced breeder. Ava is sold off to a race called the Phor without knowing what happened with her mother or sisters. Her indomitable spirit shines through. She continues to love and help those around her. I know in the story Vox blamed Ebel, but I didn't really see Ebel as much different than Ava.
Vox appears first as a POW. He is anything but. Ava, forced, to care for the Tuxa guarding Vox and 3 other Vorbax, charms Vox with her open curiosity and loving gentle heart. Vox, beyond curious about a little female who looks and (mentally) feels like one of his own people.
The Vorbax finally escape the animal cages they were placed in, and absolutely slaughter the majority of the ship's crew. With a few being spared after the death of the ship's queen.
I won't spoil the rest of the main story from here, but Vox is an amazing MMC. Him being a pretty powerful telepath helps a lot lol! Ava, for all her fumbling and finally finding her feet, is a great pair for him. I hope to get to see them again for the rest of the series.
So if you made it this far, and you love a good dark story with a couple of cupcakes fighting their way through to be happy then go read this book 😂

Good sci fi adventure with romance

The worldbuilding is dark with well-imagined non-humans. Ava is a likeable character. Like most SFR, there is emphasis on genetic compatibility, which gets a little tiresome, although the adventure is the greater part of the story. There is graphic violence with a high body count, as well as graphic sex. I had trouble liking the Vorbax after their actions on the ship; their abilities seemed little excuse for the slaughter. I am interested in Ava's further adventures.

3.5 stars. Ava, the female human lead, is a slave worker on an alien spaceship. Born in a breeding centre, she was designated a worker and sold. She’s been in an engine room since, staying safe but not free.

Vox, the male alien lead, is a captive being transported on Ava’s ship to another alien world to be “tried” for “crimes” against the other species, which involve defending his world and people from the invading species. His people have mental powers and he’s intrigued by what he sees in Ava’s mind. But she can’t be a priority for him.

When he and his friends execute their escape plan, Ava offers to assist them to free their females captive on the other planet if they’ll help her search for and free other humans. Vox isn’t interested in putting her at risk but his friends see the wisdom in her offer…

This story is mainly female lead POV, with a little bit of male lead. It is well written and an interesting sci fi dystopian romance. Whilst it ends in a happily ever after for the lead characters, the overall ambiance is dark and I never felt comfortable reading the story - maybe that’s a tribute to the writing! I enjoyed seeing Ava develop and become aware of the way she was trapped in her situation. I appreciated that she wanted choices and worked for them, even though Vox wanted to put her in a box to protect her. I empathised with Vox’s protectiveness. I appreciated that he wanted Ava to be free. I enjoyed the world building and the set up for the next story, as well as the integrated secondary characters.

Ava is an enslaved human, working in the engine room of an alien transport vessel. When violent war criminals are brought aboard to be sent to justice, Ava is sent to help feed and spy on both the guards and the prisoners. The Vorbax prisoners are unlike any of the other aliens Ava has seen, being almost similar to humans. As she learns more about them through her spying, she finds herself drawn to the mysterious Vox with his calming demeanor. But the Vorbax have a dangerous mission to complete, and when they make moves to overthrow their captors, Ava finds herself at a crossroads. Should she help the Vorbax and see how a human can fit into their plans, or should she stick with her familiar lack of autonomy?

Ava makes an excellent protagonist. Having been born into slavery, she has found ways to make the best of her lack of agency and her circumstances. Her joy in the little things gives her an almost innocent outlook, though her past experiences give her enough world wisdom to be cautious. As she starts to act more definitively towards her own objectives and stand up for herself, you can’t help but root for her success.

The Vorbax are extremely intriguing with their telepathic abilities and ability for extreme violence. Their need to respond with extreme prejudice raises interesting questions of what is necessary to protect one's home, and what costs those methods have.

Ava Greasemonkey is a tightly written science fiction novel with moderate romance that delves into themes of agency, revenge, loss, and healing. It is a true delight to read and is perfect for the readers that like a little romance with their science fiction.

Thank you to BookSirens and Alissa Lace for the advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Overall, this one was a slow start but worth it in the end. It's a little hard to rate for that reason; while I'd say the first part was closer to a 3.5 out of 5, it ended on a solid 4 out of 5, so I'm rating it a 3.75 out of 5 overall, rounded up.

Ava has been a slave her whole life; with Earth gone, humans have been relegated to the status of livestock or pets, bred in clinics and sold as laborers. However, her life with the Phor is relatively stable. She works in the engine room as they transport goods between planets, but has a few friends who care for her on board, even if the Phor queen sees her as little more than a tool. Her life on the ship changes forever when four Vorbax prisoners are brought aboard, their Tuxa captors claiming that they're transporting them to another one of their worlds to stand trial for war crimes. Ava thinks there's more to the story though, and as she learns more about the Vorbax in general and the ones in hold specifically, she begins to believe that she has to help them. However, one day everything changes and she has to decide: is she willing to risk the life she has for the chance for a better one? This book is good for people who like a good underdog story with some tension, a romance that borders on insta-love (or at least insta-lust), and a sunny heroine with a big heart and even more courage.

This book was a bit of a slow start. It felt like the writing style at the beginning was a little awkward and less edited than later in the book; the author mentions that a previous version of the book appeared on Kindle Vella and I definitely get a serialized feel from it. There was also a lot of worldbuilding going on and it occasionally felt info-dumpy. However, once at about the 40\% mark, Lace seems to have hit her stride; the writing improved significantly, as did the pacing. I was hooked from then on.

I was definitely a huge fan of Ava. She is sunny and a bit overly trusting, but you get the feeling that those are her survival mechanisms in a way; she's managed to stay alive and cared for by making those around her care about her. On top of that, she's resourceful and brave. Honestly, she's so much cooler than Vox deserves. He was more of a black box, since we don't spend nearly as much of the book from his perspective. He was pushy in a caring way and did learn to respect Ava's boundaries, but I think I realized reading this book that I will never be a fan of mind-readers as heroes unless the heroine has that power as well. Lace made sure that Ava always stood up to him though, which I appreciated.

The some of the cast of supporting characters could have been fleshed out a little more, but I definitely had a couple favorites. Rhutg was initially very closed off and scary, and the way that Lace wrote his interactions with Ava really showed how she was able to get people to open up and how she'd managed to collect friends as a slave. I don't know whether to hope he gets his own book or not. Ebel also ended up being so much more than he appeared. It was clear that he really did care for Ava, but the system he was working within made it so he was unable to imagine ways to help her more than he had. On the other hand, Erox, Lirell, and Nuor were all a little underdeveloped; I'm guessing Erox and Lirell will have a chance to shine in later books though.

4.25 stars. One of the best books I’ve read in a long time! I think if you’re a fan of Homebound, you’ll like this book too.

Ava is a human living aboard a Phor (bee-like species) ship. She was bought as a slave in a universe where there aren’t many humans and those that were around were seen as lower lifeforms to be bred and sold. She works as an engineer on the ship, assisting a Phor named Ebel. Though he bought her, Ebel sees Ava as more than just a servant and is like her work dad.

One day, the ship engages in a contract with some Tuxa (reptilian species) who bring aboard some Voraxian prisoners. These prisoners, despite being blue with no hair and having head fins, are the closest beings to humans Ava has ever seen. Ava is assigned to bring them food and begins to connect with them, particularly a male named Vox.

The Voraxians eventually break out and kill most of the crew, except Ava, Ebel, and a few others. Ava grows closer to them and discovers their mission to go to the Tuxa’s home world to rescue females that were stolen. Ava, knowing what it’s like to have people ripped away from you (all her siblings were taken and sold), wants to help them. With her assistance, they were able to free the females and make it back home. Gaining the trust and respect of the Voraxians, she aims to find other humans and enlists their help.

I really liked Ava! She’s honest, kind, determined, and capable. She cares deeply for people without allowing her emotions to blind her from logic. She’s smart and a planner, and we see her skills gained from her life experiences actively being used in the final plan (she used to crawl in vents to spy for the Phor and she knows how to upkeep a ship and engine). She emphasizes communication, verbally and nonverbally.

Vox’s species can communicate telepathically and mind control/mind break others. He respects Ava’s consent, and does not delve into her mind when she tells him not to. He’s strong, caring, patient, inquisitive, and smells her need ;)

Anatomy is pretty human-like. The spicy scenes aren’t are pretty mild and very vanilla. I get “fated mates” vibes even though it’s not explicitly stated. Vox doesn’t do much to inspire her interest other than being kind and looking humanoid - they’re just kinda drawn to each other. Although the tension is there early, they don’t get together until the second half of the book. Slowburn with a touch insta-love, if that makes sense.

You’re gonna read this more for the plot and Ava’s journey than for the romance. It was wonderful to see how she went from feeling content in her routine life to realizing there’s a whole world out there with more humans, and finding her power, passion, and autonomy.

Audio book review, so paraphrasing from memory: " . . . the control panel opened like butter . . . " - this is the level of science written by a romance writer.

The past couple of years I have unknowingly bought a few Romance books disguised as Science Fiction books. I don't mind a little bit of romantic feelings in a story. But my interest in science fiction is for the science, technology, and speculation on various alien cultures or human civilization in the future. Many writers of science fiction have fascinating ideas woven into their plots.

However, romance writers don't have fascinating ideas. It's romantic drama in space. Without the interesting ideas that define science fiction.

I try to filter out the writers who have basically moved into science fiction because the paranormal romance field is full and there are enough vampire, werewolf, shifter, etc characters and now the same old plots are being done with aliens.

Am I halfway through this book? I think so. I went yesterday to the reviews to find out what the heck this book is about, because the strong start of a great story with great characters had dissolved into body descriptions and romantic inner waffling and agony over feelings. WTF?

I read the reviews, decided to download a couple other books, downloaded them, and then went on my day, planning to listen to the other books instead. Both downloads failed, only partially downloaded, so I put this book back on to continue with chores.

It got worse. It has entirely devolved into some romance with it getting steamy and I really don't care for the Romance genre. Checking reviews again this morning to be certain that this isn't going to be Science Fiction, found this " . . . as well as graphic sex . . . " in a review about this book.

So, this is going to be a DNF.

It's unfortunate that it is risky to buy Science Fiction without combing through reviews.

I think I've wasted at least $50 the past couple years on books that became DNF as they were obviously not SF or UF as the book progressed but were instead romance books leaning heavily into graphic sex. Audible is not as easy as it used to be to return audio books, so it's wasted time and money on my part.

ARC REVIEW 📚

As a fan of alien romance, the cover and synopsis of this book drew me in instantly, and I knew I had to pick up this book.

Overall, this is a strong start to the series! The author captured the genre of space opera well and reminded me greatly of the franchise, Star Wars. In addition, they did well in executing worldbuilding and laying out the series' foundation. It was particularly interesting to learn about the Vorbax's powers as well as the similarities shared between the Vorbax and humans. I have my own theories about the latter, but I am looking forward to the next book and would love to see more of the other characters' adventures in the future.

As for the main characters, Ava was resourceful, inquisitive, and kind, while Vox was protective, open-minded, and loyal. While the couple faced cultural differences and experienced doubts about their relationship, I appreciated how resilient and determined they were to overcome those obstacles together. My only complaint is that I wish there were more scenes regarding Ava's and Vox's interactions prior to the climax. While they make a cute and well-fitted pairing, their chemistry would've made a greater impact on the readers if the author had done so. Finally, for the spice, it was relatively light.

I WOULD RECOMMEND IF 📒

If you're looking for an alien romance novel with space adventures, featuring themes such as "size difference," "slow burn romance," "alien abduction," "cultural differences," "survival," "touch her and d!e," "found family," and "HEA," then this is the book for you.

Although I wasn’t in love with this books title I did fall in love with the grease monkey herself, the sweet and spunky MFC of this story Ava.
Ava is a servant aboard the alien Phor cargo transport ship R526, there to keep the engines running smoothly alongside her boss Ebel one of the Phor drones in service to a collective queen who also lives on board.
Born in a human breeder facility and sold to the Phor this is the only life Ava has known.
She has made a few friends among the alien contractors aboard the ship and though drone Ebel would never admit it he does care for and protect Ava in his own way.
When the transport is contracted by the Phor mother queen collective to take on a classified shipment is when this slow burn romance becomes even more engaging with kernels of Ava’s history before the Phor revealed as does her fascination with the four alien Vorbax prisoners brought aboard for transport by the lizard like Tuxa to their home planet to stand trial for war crimes.
One prisoner in particular garners Ava’s interest as does he with her, MMC Vox.
The writing is engaging, the world building imaginative and characters expertly crafted.
Filled with action, adventure, intrigue, twists, surprises and of course romance the story flows with immersive appeal towards an HFN that teases of more adventure to come.

This story was so full. You really must read this book if you like space, aliens, rescues and love. The story of Ava really took the whole book. You find layer after layer about her and her family. The sad tales she shares tugs at you. Her determination for other humans was what gave her strength. The other characters in the story added so much. Each had their role to play. This author described each alien so well. You truly could see what they looked like. The ship and other areas too were so detailed. The main male characters all had such different personalities and strengths. You fall for each of them and I hope they all get their own stories. The women added so much to what life was to be for Ava. Vox the main male character was so calm and yet deadly. His connection to Ava was not an instant love but one that could not be ignored.
I truly appreciate that the author did not make them more human in nature. They way the talked acted etc. You often read an alien book that has the characters too human in nature and actions. This was a great read and I am looking forward to more of this world and their search for humans.

This was such a good book and I loved the world building between Ava and Vox and the slow burn happening between them. Ava is a human female that was born into slavery but her life could have been worse as a breeder but works on the Transport Spaceship R526 and looks after the engines and the biometric life forms she feeds when her boss is supposed to feed them but she enjoys looking at them. Now they are taking on 4 Vorbax Alien with special abilities for War crimes and are being sent for justice and Ava has been given the job to feed them and spy on the guards and them as well. Vox is an Vorbax alien and they have special abilities and can mind read people that's on a mission with his team that are on the Transport ship being taken for justice and when he meets the human female Ava who brings them food he is intrigued by her but there is sadness and strength coming off her and he want to know better but first there mission to overthrow there captors and protect there home. Ava finds herself drawn to the one called Vox as she learns a lot about them by spying but everytime she is near him she feels a peaceful but can she trust how she feels and him when her life has never been easy. Do they get there HEA or not, get this book to find out.

I don’t normally read sci-fi romance, but this book definitely changed my perspective on alien romances!
A great starter book for someone just dipping their toes into the genre.

Ava is a human that is owned by an alien race and she spends her whole life on a ship keeping it in proper working order.
Until her ship is forced to transfer a bunch of prisoners from a far away planet. Strange and blue, they’re quiet, meditative, peaceful creatures that don’t seem at all like they should be locked up.

Unable to deny their pull Ava watches them from the air vents. When she is cajoled into serving them food for the entirety of their stay she dons a disguise for protection against their jailers. A brutal race known for their brutal dealings, particularly with females…

Strong, thoughtful, and intelligent these aliens don’t seem nearly as violent as their jailers. Ava can’t help feeling a kindred spirit with them as she serves them each day.

I was enthralled with all the unique alien races Alissa Lace introduces. She builds an interesting and colorful world with very unique races that really fleshes out the story.

I’m excited to read the sequel in this continuing story!

It was a very slow burn, the first part of the book focusing on the worldbuilding and setting the plot before the main characters even meet.
I loved how fleshed out the side characters were - Ava's friends were well developed and I cared about them, maybe even more than for Ava herself, since at the beginning of the book she didn't seem to have much personality to herself. She felt like a mindless drone, just living from day to day and doing whatever she was told. However, since she was technically a slave on the ship and never knew anything else, her passivity was justified and gave her space to grow.
I liked the prisoners and how different each of them were, each with their own stories and motivations. The evil aliens were delectably gross and disgusting.
However, if you're looking for a spicy romance, this is not a book for you. It's not closed door, but the spice is infrequent and without much detail.
The action could have started earlier, as the book takes a while to reel you in, but you're rewarded with solid and very original worldbuilding and a great plot.
I liked the book and can't wait for the next one!

Liked this very much !!! Not a cliff hanger, but definitely a 2nd book !!

What a wonderful story !!!!
Ava is a girl from the stars who is a mechanic on a Phor ship . They are a insect like species with a queen and drones who are more or less traders. Ava has several jobs on here. One is a sort of spy. She crawls the vents to see what is kept in the cargo hold. On this particular day, there is prisoners.
The Vorbax are a largely unknown species. They have little space travel, and so are easy pickings for more predatory species.
These particular Vorbax are very blue, with gills. And they glow.
Ava and these new creatures form a friendship of sorts.
Will she be able to get off this ship, and have a life ??
Vox and his brother and friends, are on a quest. The human us cute, but can she help them ?? And if so, how ??
This was a very nice easy read, with some action that was A- ok with me !!!
Lots of adventure left by the end for a 2nd book !! It will be nice to continue this amazing story !!!

This started off a little awkwardly. The Verbex came across as pretty creepy at first, but as Ava got to know them, their familiarities became more prominent. When Vex said that if anything ever happened to Ave he would “rampage among the stars” my heart melted. I really appreciated that this was not an Insta-love or fated-mate scenario. Vex and Ava felt a connection that grew in affection and became physical. They admitted that they cared for each other in a way that was both friendship and more. It took a lot for trust to be established between them, but once it was, the bond that they formed was both deep and abiding.

Unfortunately, this book needs a lot of editing. Aside from the typos like “he” instead of “she” or incorrect endings for tenses, there was a lot of grammatical issues as well. For example, the author might say “vex and her talk all night”, instead of “she and vex talked all night”. There were just a lot of little things that made it hard to read.

Please remember that this is MY personal opinion:

Originally when I started reading this, I thought it would just be good and would end up rating it a 3. It's definitely slow to start, but it still has an amazing storyline. However, about halfway through it finally starts to pick up and get better.

This story has tender moments, intrigue, action, and a little spice. There are moments of deep feeling as well that bring on some tears. It's a piece that takes time to enjoy and is worth the time it takes to read it. I found by the end of the story that I was completely involved and had spent the better half a day reading it to the end. Plus, the epilogue is stunning and now I cannot wait for the second book to come out!

I loved everything about this story. I loved our FMC and her bravery and heart. I loved our MMC for his kindness and loyalty. The side characters were all wonderful and I loved the world building! I usually prefer stories where humans are a rarity because there are so many stories where it's mostly humans with a few aliens. I really enjoyed the way the aliens think and how some of them I could argue are morally grey. They are desperate and are willing to kill anyone that could stand in their way. I loved how the couple acted and their relationship. There is some spice but it isn't as detailed as other books I have read. Overall I loved it and can't wait to see what happens in the rest of the story, especially after that epilogue.

A female lead I can relate to

Ava is a human born slave. Born after earth was destroyed and bought to work as a mechanic on an alien ship. She doesn't know what life as a freeborn can be like. An Alien captive plants the seed inside her that grows into a desire to be something more than what her life has been.

The author fleshed Ava out to be a woman who felt real. Someone who had strength, depth, emotion, and fear. She wasn't ruled by libido, wasn't a damsel in distress, her only purpose in life to wilt under the thrall of the male alien lead.
I enjoyed reading from her perspective. I didn't roll my eyes at her thoughts. The world was well thought out, and the drama was well paced to keep the story going.
I hope future stories from this world will feature more of the side characters inside, as I have come to care for some already.
I look forward to reading more

DNF - quit at 32%
The writing was ok, but the plot progresses so slowly, it lost my interest. I needed more character development, more background for the main characters, by a third of the way thru, there should have been more happening, more connection to the main characters, more interest in what happens in the plot. I really didn’t care by the time I quit. I was bored and decided to mess around doing other things, which is sad as I love to read. This had potential, but the author needs to learn to pace the story better, leave out details that don’t move the plot forward, give the readers some sort of connection to the characters to make readers care about them & their story.

At my age (62), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

Ava Greasemonkey is a wonderful first book in a sci-fi romance series. The world building was excellent. Ava is a wonderful character. Her situation as a slave and a human who feels alone in the universe is touching. I loved the idea of humans being a secret species known to only very few other species and Ava being hidden by her friends. Another great character is Vox, the Vorbax warrior who boards the ship as a prisoner, with his warrior friends. He and Ava have an immediate connection and their romance is very moving. The story is original and engaging, Ava, Vox and the other characters are very complex. The story is action-packed and suspenseful and I am looking forward to reading the future adventures of Ava, Vox and the other Vorbax friends.

Good story

I did enjoy the story although I found the writing to be really choppy and disjointed at times. A good editor could really make this shine. The blooming friendship between our lead character Ava and alien Vox was well developed but their displays of sexual intimacy read as passionless. The author uses all the right words yet their chemistry falls flat. I think this author would be better off not including erotic material. The author does too much telling, so what should be a heated moment is instead more of a humdrum to-do list. Apparently this is early or first book for this author. The bones of the story were good enough to justify trying book 2. Won't go beyond that without much improvement though.

A Great First

I really enjoyed reading this book. These days I don’t read a lot of new series books. With age, I don’t have the patience for numerous books in a series. I lean more to new single books and reading previous favorites again (and again). Age, anxiety, whatever it is, doesn’t let me. It has to really keep my interest for me to not just jump to ending but read the whole thing.

I have went to facebook and followed this author so I know when the next, Ava Stargazer (I believe was mentioned), is out. There were things I felt could be more fleshed out that I would like to know more on. The biologicals (?) and Earth to name a couple. I will be reading the next, so for that reason I’m changing my 4 stars to 5.

Pleasantly surprised

Excellent story about a human sold into slavery. Her mother was kept to breed humans to sell. Ava was so to the Phor a bee like species . Her " handler" Ebel treated her as well as he was allowed. She became the mechanic for the engine. Maintaining it. The transport ship picked up their contracted cargo which among others held four male prisoners from xai. A species that were very like Ava except they were blue and other differences. To Ava they were beautiful. Vox was most especially attractive. Let the adventure begin. We'll written adventure in space. There are many humanoid species, some to love, some to hate. I'm hoping their is another book.

Ava is a human female born in a breeder's facility and slave all her life but still a caring and pure soul,Vox and three other males from Vorbax are in the path of revenge and rescue of their females ,kidnapped from their planet by the Tuxa.

As they met,Ava and Vox connection is instant and her caring soul want to help them…

A slow burn love story, low on steam, with adventure ,a good world building, a complex plot and well developed characters.

I enjoyed this story and very curious to see the new developments of their search and rescue of more humans.

This book was better than I thought it was going to be based on the story’s description. The story starts off introducing us to Ava, a human enslaved on an alien ship. She meets Vox, an alien prisoner being escorted to a nearby planet to stand trial for murder. A romance develops between Ava and Vox. There is some steamy romance but nothing explicit. The story line is really good and kept me hooked. And although there is a HEA, the epilogue hints at a continuation of the story in book 2. I am definitely looking forward to the next book. I was provided with an ARC to review.

I'm a huge fan of Alien romance and jumped at the chance to read this and it was a great read, indeed.

I adored the MMC, he had loyalty and so much kindness. The FMC was strong and brave. I appreciated the slower developing romance between the main characters instead of jumping right into the spice and the spice we did get, was subtle and pleasant.
This book gave me more cozy vibes and it was a great feeling while reading this.

After that epilogue, I am definitely excited to see where this series may go.

This is an ARC review and is my honest opinion.
