Girl Without Borders

Rate this book
Chicago. West side. Follow the paths of three young lovers, at the turn of the millenium. Working-class punks and degenerate-labelled youth move across the urban landscape, effortlessly, at night. Suffering the depths to which culture has sunk. Looking for refuge. Fearless in love.

Will is a young man with a big heart, and big dreams. Intelligent, sensitive and compassionate. Determined to make sense of his life in the city. Determined to learn the code of the streets. He falls for a young woman, Bella, who has a punk attitude and style all her own. In no time, she steals his heart. LIfe gets complicated, as Will gets lost in love.

There is another girl, Cass, who has her heart set on Will. Jaded by her lost childhood and experience in abusive relationships, she sees hope in the relationship. He is turned on by her ability to survive on the streets. But her love for him, though unparallelled, is not mutual. Danger, drama, and emotional turmoil loom on the horizon.

Follow the tale of youth who live and love large, in the shadow of the generation before them. Raised on punk rock, grunge, hip-hop and celebrity worship. Raised on high fructose corn-syrups. Praying not to be reduced to culture's blind carbon copies. Generation X. Where love becomes power... with tragic consequences

I am the author of this book. I wrote the greater portion of this book when I was in my twenties, living in Chicago on the west side (not far from where the Smashing Pumpkins got famous, and the movie High Fidelity was filmed). I used to go to the coffeeshops in Bucktown and the Polish Triangle with my laptop to write. This was late 1990s and you could get your ass kicked for writing on a laptop in public. It wasn't cool to be a geek. Writing from my protagonist Will's perspective was not difficult seeing as I am gender fluid myself. I was a pretty tough chick or I thought I was, rather angry at the world, introverted, rebellious in attitude and spirit. I hung around other punks and geeks I met in the bars, cafes and small clubs on Division and Damen, and in Wicker Park and the Ukrainian Village. All I wanted was to be left alone and write. I was in some existential pain, I suppose, lonely in my heart. So I gravitated toward others who felt injured or broken. I had more than one love/hate relationship, the characteristics of which you will find in the novel. You can call in creative nonfiction if not fiction. If you ever go to Chicago look up Quimby's bookstore and the Flat Iron Building. I wrote the greater portion of this book a stone throw away.

Growing up in Chicago, it was easy to read the descriptions and feel like at any point, I could have been sitting at the bar with any one of the characters. Striking up a conversation, being a part of the world the author created. You feel Will's frustrations; you can feel those experiences as if they were your own. You can almost remember walking down the street with Will or sitting at the bar ordering another whiskey as you make your way through the pages.

I wanted to give Will a hug and a high-five and a smack on the back of the head. It was like he was someone I loved once, long ago.

Interesting

Three very hesitant stars. Here's why: I'm not sure what I just read.

Will has some lady friends. Will is mistreated. So is everyone else in this book. There's a lot going on. And nothing going on.

The writing is at once beautiful and annoying. Often poetic, it grated on me at times. I found a lot to love and much to not love.

I think my timing was off for this one. I ended up skimming the second half of the book and I hate doing that because I don't think it's fair to the author or the characters. So I'll likely pick this back up at a later date when I'm in the right frame of mind.

Thanks to Goodreads and the author for the ARC.

I read the book (actually, two books) a week ago. Despite its length, I’m finally adding the review now since I’ve been busy and finally found some time to do it.

I think it's a solid novel that resonates with many themes about youth and adolescence, unreturned love, with some mystery elements that are all resolved in BOOK 2.

I find it overall positive and easy to read even though a lot of metaphors, narration, and jargon were used. It has a logical but kind of tragic ending, which I don't mind at all. So I'm subjectively giving it 4/5.

*** SPOILER ALERT***

In Book 1, the storyline primarily revolves around the complex relationship between Will and Bella, with other characters playing significant roles in the narrative. The story starts with the introduction of Will and Bella, who are deeply in love but also prone to intense conflicts and jealousy. As their relationship progresses, tensions escalate due to trust issues, emotional volatility, and external influences.

Throughout Book 1, the reader witnesses the ups and downs of Will and Bella's relationship, characterized by passionate moments of love and intimacy contrasted with explosive arguments and bouts of jealousy. Despite their deep connection, underlying insecurities and unresolved conflicts continually strain their bond.

Meanwhile, other characters in the story, such as Helynn, Lance, and Cass, interact with Will and Bella, adding layers of complexity to the narrative. Helynn serves as a supportive friend to both Will and Bella, offering advice and insight into their relationship dynamics. Lance, a close friend of Will's, provides a different perspective on the situation, while Cass, a past flame of Will's, stirs up additional drama with her presence.

As tensions between Will and Bella reach a boiling point, a tragic event occurs at a nightclub, where Bella is found murdered and stabbed. The investigation into Bella's death becomes a central focus of the narrative, with Will emerging as a prime suspect due to his tumultuous relationship with the victim and a history of jealousy and possessiveness.

Throughout Book 2, the investigation delves deeper into the circumstances surrounding Bella's murder, uncovering a web of secrets, lies, and hidden motives. As the evidence against Will mounts, doubts arise about his innocence, leading to intense scrutiny from law enforcement and the media.

Despite maintaining his innocence, Will struggles to convince others of his lack of involvement in Bella's death. The investigation exposes the complex dynamics of Will and Bella's relationship, revealing jealousy, betrayal, and resentment as possible motives for the crime.

As the story unfolds, twists and turns keep the reader guessing about the true culprit behind Bella's murder. The narrative explores themes of love, obsession, and the dark side of human nature, showcasing the devastating consequences of unchecked emotions and toxic relationships.

Ultimately, the resolution of the investigation sheds light on the truth behind Bella's death, uncovering shocking revelations and unexpected betrayals. The story concludes with justice being served, but not without leaving a lasting impact on the lives of all involved characters.

ummm no…sorry

The writing style annoyed me. No quotes but instead italicized font when a new character was talking. However when whomever that person was addressing, their words weren’t changed so it matched the text of the story that was being told. *Rolling my eyes* couldn’t tell if someone was speaking or if the story was unfolding.
I was pretty much lost for most, if not all of it. Couldn’t tell which way the story was going; whether or not it was a past, present, or a future occurrence. It was confusing. I honestly couldn’t tell you if there was a point to it all.

In my opinion, the book has an excellent plot. I love the idea and the values readers could take from the story. I absolutely salute the author for bringing up the issue among younger adults and how their choices could affect their lives ahead. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of mental health awareness among readers and how people should take heed of it.

However, my main concern is the organization of the story. Honestly, it took me so much time to finish reading this book. Halfway through reading it, I have to reread from the start, as I have a problem processing what is going on in the story. Unfortunately, the writing style is not something that I am familiar with.

Hence, I would give this book a 3-star rating.

Very interesting story. I liked how the book was broken into two parts: part one - sometime after Will was born and part two - sometime before Will died.

I'm not very familiar with the author's writing style, so that could be why I was more confused than enjoying the read personally. I'm more used to traditional writing (ei: dialogue using quotation marks) so it made it a bit difficult for me.

On another note, the story itself was written very beautiful and poetic. I loved how descriptive it was - felt like I was in Chicago myself. I just had a bit of a hard time connecting with the characters, which made me have a disconnect with the book in all. All in all, I will revisit this novel and now that I am more familiar with the writing style, I can enjoy it more fully.

Growing up in Chicago as music is their catalyst. Their lives intertwine and so is their love for one another as lines become blurry. Somewhat uneven at times it just did not capture my vision. It was a so-so read for me.

Chicago, IL. Lance (drummer), & Will (20+, Puerto Rican, acoustic guitar) were out riding their bicycles.
Lance took a spill. Some farmer came to the rescue patched him up & gave him something to drink.
The Empty Bottle. The Alkaline Trio band was playing. Will had bought Cass (drama Queen) a couple of beers.
It seems Bella Virginia Vaughn might have a thing for Will also.
Lounge Axe. Helynn & Will went to have a few drinks & get to know each other.

What is in Will’s future?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A fairly well written urban adventure book. It wasn’t always very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish, but never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great urban adventure movie, or better yet a mini TV series. Not sure I understood the whole story content. That said I will only rate it at 3/5 stars.

I read this on Booktasters recommendation

BOOK:-GIRL WITHOUT BORDERS-A NOVEL BY KATYA MILLS

BOOK ONE-:SOMETIME BEFORE WILL WAS BORN.

A fiction on the character Will, a person in his twenties and his love attraction named Bella Virginia Vaughn amongst others females. This book looks at whether life was meaningless and coping with life through choices in a world where many subjected themselves to others;destroyed self and memory to forget and getaway or run away from life ,while some sacrificed o fulfill dreams thought meaningless. This story looks at the possibility of a best chance(CHA-Earn-Sea) available to the Indian girl for a girl who wants to care for her family in the western world;the possibility and veracity of karma on people;whether suffering in youth was a payment for luxury in mature years and whether rest and comfort in mature years had a weakening effect on individuals; amongst others .In the story we see Bella withstand America's threat and the threats of the Western world as being without borders moving from here to there of the hill land and the uninhabited land. Also Will's inability to her Bella while fighting his female demons is seen as her being without borders.

Many thanks to the author and BookTasters for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The book is broken up into two parts; one sometime before the main character, Will, was born and the next part sometime before he died. The author's writing style was new to me and difficult to get into at first as it was confusing as the dialogue did not use quotation marks and it was easy to loose track of which character was talking. This meant it took a lot longer to get through the book than normal as I had to go back a few times to reread some parts. On the other hand, the writing was also very descriptive and on the whole the story itself was very interesting and often intense as it covered themes such as whether life is meaningless and mental health awareness without sugar-coating anything for a young adult audience. Worth revisiting after first read and a choice read for young adults.

3/5 stars!

it took me a minute to get into the authors writing style as it’s harder for me to read with quotation marks, but over I liked it a lot!

this book is split into two parts:
Part 1- Sometime After Will Was Born
Part 2 - Sometime Before Will Died

I really loved the story and the way the author wrote it was really interesting. Will himself seemed like such a complex and heavy character who dealt with hard struggles. You see him going through different challenges and crazy times in his life.

As for TWs- I would definitely be aware of the mental health talk in this book!

It’s a good adventure novel and one of the first i’ve read so i enjoyed it!

thank u to Booktasters & the author for the ARC 🤍

I actually enjoyed the plot of this book. I had read a few reviews before reading it and saw that some people didn’t like the layout of the writing. I did enjoy it however the only issue I had was understanding when a person was talking as it wasn’t in speech marks but was in italics instead.

The plot was rather fun to read and easy to keep along with. I just struggled at times to understand it due to the writing style as stated before! However, it was often poetic to have the writing this way.

It was a great novel by a fascinating writer and I hope to read more works by this author in the future!!

Thank you to BookTasters for the opportunity of reading and reviewing this book!! I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it!

A Girl Without Borders… it started off as a very slow read for me, although the plot picked up a bit along the way.
I am quite Impressed with the way Katya was able to intertwine and connect the lives of the characters and their struggles in a relatively fast moving world. Additionally, it’s safe to say Katya was also able to skillfully portray love as a driving force, that can not only have positive impacts but negative effects as well. It’s ultimately a fine read.
I found the book with the help of BookTasters on X, who then connected me to the talented Katya Mills.

Comment: At some point, I was quite unsure of what I was reading, so I would kindly suggest that the author makes the dialogues between the characters and happenings in the book clearer and more structured.
Thank you!

This felt like a pretty intense read. I felt the author wrote in a way that was very to the point, very raw, without sugarcoating anything. I think that made me feel more aware of the characters' emotions and experiences, and I did feel connected to them. Something that I noticed was the fact that I felt quite sorry for these characters. The whole time I was reading about them, I felt as though I never fully understood them, or why they behaved the way they did, and that impacted me a little bit psychologically. I did like reading this though, it definitely had my attention after a few pages, and I became invested in it.

Reading this book on first attempt was quite tricky because I'm not used to the writer's style of writing but I think it's unique. I must commend the writer's choice of words, especially quotes because it brought life to the story and it gave me an insight on what the protagonist's world is like. On the other hand, Will is an interesting character and I saw through his struggles with unrequited love and how he kept going back to a certain toxic ex that almost cost him his sanity. It's a good read for me and I'm looking forward to reading more books from the author.

This was a GoodReads giveaway book.
I was not able to try to continue to read this.
I felt it's written where you feel trippy, high and confused.😵‍ I've never read anything like this. I don't know if it is supposed to be poetic or written like a rap song?🤷 I even thought that maybe it was badly translated from another language.🤷 Some sentences were incomplete and made no sense at all.🤔 I’m sorry to the writer, but I tried.🖤

Thank you to Book Taster for recommending the book. It took me time to get the hang of it, maybe its because of the style that was used by the author, grammatical errors here and there and some chapters not flowing well. Nonetheless I will review the part that I understood well. the book is about Will who faces a lot of challenges, he searches for meaning in life through the challenges he faces. I recommend the book to young people as they will relate better.

This was a GoodReads giveaway book. I tried to like it, I really did, but couldn't even finish the first chapter. I'm not saying it is a bad book. It's just not my style. The writing makes what I read of it feel like what I would imagine an artificially induced "trip" to be like. Just not for me. Sorry. 🤷

I found the writing style quite different from what I’m used to. I liked the fact that will tried to focus on his writing more and I like that the book gives an insight on substance abuse and depression. It also gives an insight on the importance of friendship. I recommend this book for teens and adults to read.

Very interesting read. I do feel it should have a better transition from chapter to chapter or store line to story lines. Also I do feel a better description of each character should be depicted. The best described character was Will. But overall very much interesting read and interesting story line every new “chapter” was side of Will.

the description seemed quite interesting for me & I had such high hopes for the book maybe that’s why I’m more disappointed the writing style was quite annoying to read full disclosure.
I did however like quite a few things but they weren’t enough for me to like the book as a whole.
