A Kilt for Christmas

Rate this book
Legend has it that wishes made at the standing stones during Christmas come true.

As if.

Maisie Barron is over it. A small-town girl with big dreams, her frustrations lead her to make a silly wish at the standing stones outside Loren Brae. Little does she know, the magick found there will transform her wish into a catastrophic event that threatens the upcoming Christmas Book Festival.

Weston Smith needs a break. Burnt out from his tenure-track professorship, he decides that a holiday in little Loren Brae, Scotland, will be the perfect escape he needs to recharge his batteries. The last thing he expects is to find the woman he’s been waiting his whole life for. With the over-zealous help of a gaggle of elderly book club members, West finds himself on a real-life mission to woo the woman of his dreams.

There’s more than magic at play when sparks ignite. Snowed in, with an undeniable attraction brewing, only West and Maisie can save Loren Brae from the snowstorm of the century.

Author’s note: a handsome American takes on a lonely Scotswoman in this stand-alone small-town Scottish romance. Wicked banter, a highland ghost coo, and dogs dressed in kilts make this magical Christmas story the perfect happily-ever-after.

Weston & Maisie meet when he heads to the Highlands for a vacation. He wasn't expecting to meet the woman of his dreams so instantly.

This was pretty cute. The banter and chemistry was great. I don't like something he did at the end, but I figured it was coming anyway, so I guess it didn't bother me too much. I loved the meddling book club ladies that Weston befriends, too. And who wouldn't love a highland ghost coo and dogs dressed in kilts?

Series notes:
Hoopla didn't tell me this was #3 in a series when I borrowed it, so not thrilled I didn't read #1 and #2. I don't have a clue if they should be read in order.

Narration notes:
They both did an alright job. She speaks a little fast with her thick, genuine accent and his Scottish accent wasn't great, but A for effort.

A Kilt for Christmas by Tricia O’Malley
The Enchanted Highlands series #3. Alternating POV. Can be read as a stand-alone.

From California, West is used to the sun and not rainy days of Loren Brae, Scotland.
He’s there for vacation and a book fest. Supposedly, the pub was just a short walk but West shivered just thinking of it.
A gaggle of elderly book club members befriend West and then help him “get the girl”.

Maisie wishes for a snowy Christmas on the standing stones outside Loren Brae. The snowiest ever. Little does she know, the magick of the stones can make her wish turn into a catastrophic event that threatens the Christmas Book Festival.

🎧 I listened to an audiobook narrated by Amy Landon and William Watt. The two have narrated the full series to date. Being from Scotland, Maisie has a heavy Scottish accent which was fun to listen to for this Midwest U.S. city person, but meant I had to slow the playback considerably to understand the conversation. The character Maisie also talks even faster when excited, scared or upset and both narrators executed that flawlessly. The banter of the conversation made it worth slowing down to enjoy the spikes and volleys. The antagonizing banter between Maisie and West during the negotiations of playing trivia and then the game were laughably chuckle worthy.
And while the hero ghost coo (cow) doesn’t talk, it does bark or whatever cows in Scotland do, and including it in the narrative was comedic and playful.

I loved this romantic comedy for the humor, spice and interfering book club ladies. The audio made the whole experience interactive and alive.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley and the publisher Dreamscape Select. I will recommend this to bookclubs and anyone that loves a good romcom.

Even though there was sex in this Christmas book, I gave it 4 stars because there was so much I loved about it. A ghost coo, a kitchen witch, dual point of views, a broonie, a blizzard, a book fair, meddling old ladies, called the Book Bitches, that were quite honestly the best part of the book! I highly recommend this stand-alone, small-town, Scottish romance. BUT…read the book and skip the audiobook. The narrators were terrible, especially the female.

Thank you to NetGalley, Dreamscape Select, and Lovewrite Publishing for the chance to listen and review this book. All thoughts are my own.

Very cute and ooey gooey! This book is fun and lighthearted with a splash of magic.

West, an American professor, takes a trip to Scotland to visit his buddy. West meets Maisie, a prickly, competitive local woman, and sparks start flying. West enlists the help of the local elderly women’s book club, the Book Bitches, in order to woo Maisie. They do very cute wholesome Christmas-themed activities together and even encounter some ghosts. It’s all very festive and adorable (and there’s some spice, too!)

If you prefer a slow burn and don’t like “love at first sight”, this might not be for you. He takes one look at her and decides that she’s the one he wants!

I loved everything about this story! It's cute, whimsical, and an all around feel good holiday romance. I found Maisie to be super relatable and Wes is basically Superman👌🏻 there's a sprinkle of magic and mythical creatures. One of my favorite tropes snowed into a cabin!

Thank you Tricia for the arc, all thoughts are my own

This was such a cute and fun quick read to kick off the holiday season with! This was my first read from Tricia and I really enjoyed it. It gave all the good, warm, Hallmark, Christmas feels!
🎄 Hallmark Vibes
❄️ Snowed In
🎄 Fun Banter
❄️ Rom-Com
🎄 Paranormal/Ghost Highland Coo
❄️ Christmas Wish
🎄 The Book B!tches Club!
This is book 3 in the Enchanted Highlands Series but can definitely be read as a stand alone. I haven’t read book 1 or 2 and had now issues with this one. I laughed so much with this book. I loved West, our Clark Kent! And Maisie is so feisty and competitive! I loved their back and forth fun banter! They have such great chemistry. So heartwarmingly sweet.
The older ladies were down right fabulous! Absolutely hilarious! All the characters in this book are so full of life and personality! You can’t help but love them all.
I loved that this story took place in Scottland with all the Scottish Myths and Lores. This really was a warm, sweet and fun holiday read! I’ll be going going back to read Book 1 & 2 now. Thank you so much Tricia for the ARC!

I randomly saw this on Hoopla and decided why not! I didn’t realize til I was half way through that this is book 3 in a long standing series. Lol oops! I didn’t care for the male narrator as much and felt the MMC was a bit…odd at times. But otherwise this was a fun holiday read filled with lore and legend surrounding a quaint Scottish town. A literary professor obsessed with fairy tales and a fantasy writer?! What better duo!

This book has a good rating and several glowing reviews. Maybe I’m missing something? Maybe I’d love it more if I was into the series. It’s cute and fun, but kind of all over the place. I found it to be an odd mix of nerdy, sweet, and steamy - with unusual magic and ghosts and meddling older ladies.
Some parts were great in this Scottish Christmas romance. (The book blurb can give more info.) But too often I was thinking it was kind of wacko. I’m not a huge fan of magical realism or supernatural fiction, so those interesting elements weren’t a big plus for me. The romance has some cute attraction, but moves quickly and is sometimes awkward.
It’s a fun Christmas romance, but not one I’d highly recommend.

Do you love Christmas? Do you love magic fuzzy cows? Do you love humor? If so, this book is for you!

I had to give this 5 stars because WOW my heart is happy after finishing it. It was such a feel good story, and I truly laughed out loud many times throughout the book. The spice between the two MC's was written so well. Hot damn! It was a quick read, and the perfect thing to get me into the Christmas spirit. I will absolutely be picking up more of Tricia's books. Would recommend to anyone wanting a feel good story for the holidays!

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I came for the ghost highland cow and stayed because I thought I might as well get out my annual rage review early this year. The author has obviously never been to Berkeley (no beach to be found and I never ONCE saw Harry Styles anywhere near downtown so maybe I’m just bitter). On thé plus side, it was blessedly short!

🎧🎧AUDIO REVIEW🎧🎧

OVERALL REVIEW & RATING: 4 STARS

Another outstanding #BingeListen along with a #New2Me author!

Back in mid-December (2023), Dreamscape Select granted me an ALC of A Kilt for Christmas via NetGalley and as one does (me, I’m the *one* lol) I went on the hunt for the first 2 audios in the series. Everand, formally Scribd, came thru for the #win!!

Soooooo, not only did I get to enjoy a new-to-me author, but a series from the beginning and in my favorite format 🎧🎧. *throws confetti* 🎉

NOTE: I am not a frequent reader of stories in the genre and/or with tropes that are outside the realm of possibility, but something told this would be light on the fantasy, so I went for it. #winning :)

PERFORMANCE REVIEW & RATING: 4 STARS

Will Watt is a narrator that falls under the category of speedy for me and his brough does not help LOL however, he's also a narrator that I’ve already gotten used to from previous listens so I knew to pay attention and concentrate until I got lost in the story and had no choice but to concentrate. Fell me? He’s an adjustment for sure but also very versatile and excellent narrator all around.

Amy London was new-to-me with this series and I can't really find no fault in her narration of any of the stories :)

STORY REVIEW & RATING: 4 STARS

By the time I hit A Kilt for Christmas, I was entranced by the magic. This story was a bit more magical than the first 2 but I think that had everything to do with the Christmas setting. It’s a sweet, low angst, feelgood, love-at-first-sight, slow burn story that will put a huge smile on your face if you allow it! *wink* <<< That means that yes, you have to suspend a little reality and go with the flow LOL but if I can do it, anyone can, and it’s worth it for this story!

This book doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s part of its charm. You just have to suspend reality, let go, and enjoy the ride. Between the humor, the heartwarming moments, and the enchanting myths and lore of Scotland, this story hit all the right notes for me.

If you’re looking for a holiday read that’s lighthearted, imaginative, and filled with a touch of Scottish magic, this one’s right up your alley!

Final Thoughts--> Clyde is a hero, and I want to be friends with the Book Bitches!

I had a really hard time keeping my attention on this one. I think I just found the FMC to be utterly exhausting, which is the second book in a row like that. Neurotic FMCs who let their bullshit make them shrill and bitchy are just ... not my cup of tea. And it leaves me wondering what the MMC likes about them, because these guys are all in despite the bullshit.

Meh.

I like the world / overall story of this series, but another meh one like this and I'll probably bail out.

This was cute. I, too, would wish for the snowiest Christmas ever so I enjoyed that.

Some of the story was trying a little too hard, but the "coo" and the snowed into a cabin scene helped make up for it.

I received an ALC (Advanced Listener Copy) of this audiobook from NetGalley.

4 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐🎧

I liked that she was the one local this time, and he wasn't. The meet-cute was cute. It gave us that touch of magic the author likes to kick us off with.

I enjoyed the Christmas special and how it really does fit with the rest of the series. It makes me want the next book even more.

Who doesn't love an excellent snowed-in love story?
And the narration was perfect. Will and Amy really hit it out of the park with these, and I love it.

Y'all, if you need a fun and cozy holiday read set in Scotland, I have JUST the book. A Kilt for Christmas is SO FREAKING CUTE! It's a sweet opposites attract romance with some paranormal elements, a gaggle of crazy old ladies, and all kinds of holiday festivities. Though it's best enjoyed as part of the Enchanted Highlands series (which I also LOVE), I think it would also make sense as a standalone. Add to your holiday TBR right now!

When Professor Weston (West) Smith decides to take a holiday vacation in Scotland, he doesn't expect to immediately fall head over heals for Scottish girl Maisie Barron. Maisie is visiting the small town of Loren Brae to help her cousin put on the local book festival, and she's immediately put off by the handsome and intelligent American who somehow knows more than her about Scottish myths and legends. When he inadvertently catches her wishing for a snowy Christmas at the local standing stones, he asks if he can court her and she is... non committal. So West enlists the help of the (locally) famous Book B!tches book club to help him win Maisie over. Many festive shenanigans ensue and Maisie starts to soften towards him - but can they be anything more than a holiday fling when their lives are so different?

A Kilt for Christmas has literally everything you could want in a Christmas read. There is a gingerbread house-making contest. There is mistletoe EVERYWHERE. There is a sleigh ride (driven by a broonie and a ghost Highland coo). There is a blizzard... leading to getting snowed in... leading to a spicy hot tub situation. It's just perfect! And, as usual, I'm all about Tricia's MCs - West is a sweet, hot nerd and Maisie is full of Scottish quips. It's light and fun and a great addition to the series (all of the characters from previous books show up!).

A Kilt for Christmas is OUT NOW, just in time for holiday reading!

2/5🌶️

Another super duper cozy read by Tricia O'Malley. I continue to be in love with our little town of Loren Brae, full of magic... including our highland ghost coo, Clyde! Our main man West is such a cutie and my dream man: intelligent, goofy, handsome and a total simp for our gal, Maisie. He consistency in his crush and feelings for Maisie were swoon-worthy, and made watching the two fall for each other all of the more satisfactory. I really love how Tricia creates such a plethora of side characters & creatures for us to fall in love with too... from the gaggle of elderly book club members, to a sassy chihuahua who's constantly in fun outfits, to the aforementioned ham of a cow Clyde, I loved every single character. No villains in sight! This made this cozy, Christmas-time read all the better. And don't get me started on the delicious accents and expressions! I love this world. Please let me go visit!!

Dual narration for the MCs with each maintain the Scottish accent for Maisie and the American accent for West. Listened at 1.75x speed because 2x made it tough to decipher some of Maisie and her country-people's lines.

Weston rolls into a Scottish town and it's love at first sight for him and overly competitive, mild know it all Maisie. Weston's direct communication about his attraction to Maisie quickly warms her up and the two soon become inseparable. There is one pretty spicy scene, but otherwise just lots of flirtation on a relatively straight path to the conclusion.

The writing--especially West's dialogue--is a bit unbelievable and forced. The pacing is quick, which works for the story. No real plot twists or hurdles to overcome. Just a fast read for a simple romance.

Overall: 4 stars

I'll tell my students about: sex, alcohol, language, supernatural

This was a really cute story. I loved that magic embedded throughout the book and it truly felt like I was in the small town of Loren Brae, Scotland. Clyde and Brice are without a doubt my favorite characters in the story! I mean, how could that not be?! A prankster ghost coo and a devious, yet extremely loving kitchen elf... count me in!

The romance aspect was definitely insta-love which isn't my favorite, but overall it was a really cute, easy, and fun Christmas read.

3.25 ⭐️ An American literature professor falls in love with a Scottish aspiring writer.

Sounds fun enough, except there's actual magic and literal ghosts are hunting the village and... idk.

Full RTC, but it always trips me up when all of a sudden there are real magical creatures in what otherwise would be a cute small-town romcom.

The audiobook was fun and I liked the narrators a lot though! I've heard a couple of Will Watt's audiobooks now and I really like him! I know... Who am I? Liking a man's work when it comes to books and literature? I'm shocked too!

This one of just a few books that I actually DNF’d at 41%. I love a good Scottish romance but this story didn’t grab me. It’s slow and this instant love was not well written. I listened to this and I thought the narrators sounded like they’ve been run through some sort of AI program. I’m glad others have enjoyed this story but it’s just not for me.
