Unholy Island #2

The Book Keeper

Rate this book
Mysterious, magical, and a little bit deadly... Welcome to Unholy Island.

Luke Taylor was searching for his missing twin brother when he discovered a new purpose on a magical tidal island. Living in a quirky bookshop is a dream come true - he just didn't expect it to be so damn dangerous.

Running a business on a tiny island was always going to bring challenges, but Luke didn't bargain on strange customers, hexed books, or a sentient shop that seems to have its own ideas about how things ought to be done.

Not to mention his deepening feelings for the island's resident witch...

Esme Gray became the island's Ward Witch seven years ago and has built a life of safety and quiet for herself. A balm for her abusive past.

Her feelings for the new Book Keeper have disturbed those calm waters, and when his life is threatened, she doesn't hesitate to dive in to help. But is she strong enough to pull them both out alive?

The Book Keeper is the second book in the Unholy Island series. Drift away with this Cosy Fantasy today!

*The Unholy Island series is set in the same world as the urban fantasy mystery books, Crow Investigations, but it can be enjoyed independently.

The Book Keeper is the second book in Sarah Painter’s Unholy Island series, and it’s absolutely as good as the first. An island full of intriguing characters, a slow-burn relationship between two people carrying a ton of baggage, supernatural goings-on, and a sentient bookshop. Who doesn’t love a sentient bookshop?
Highly recommended and waiting for the next installment!

I’ve been eagerly awaiting two books recently. One was the third of Charlie Holmberg’s Whimbrel House novels and the other was this. Sadly, the former has been a disappointment, but this has been a delight.
One of my tests for a good book is the point at which it lets you go after you pick it up for the first time. I was nearly a third of the way into ‘The Book Keeper’ before I lifted my head. This is a very good book.
All the ingredients of romance, mystery, drama and spookiness are perfectly balanced and was an absolute pleasure to read.

better than the first book

This book was much better than the first book! I like the mysterious and character growth in it. This book is definitely on the slow burn side. It was a little more cozy. I’m looking forward to reading Book 3. And I’m hoping for quicker answers.

And we learn a little more about both the island and its inhabitants, along with a mystery involving the network of bookshops, and sellers, of strange and magical tomes.

I am looking forward to the publication of the third book in the series.

Murder, magic, mystery

I enjoyed this more than the first book. Esme had great character growth. Friendships strengthened and finally got some answers about the inhabitants of the island. There is magical realism, but it's believable. I love the Bookshop is sentient. The relationship grew with Esme and Luke, but my, is it a sloooow burn! I knew early on who the villain was and also guessed what was wrong with Winter the dog. I felt pretty frustrated at points that the vagueness of what or who the inhabitants are, I think we needed some clarity as it's book 2 now. The only ones I'm sure of are Fiona , Euan and Esme. I'm looking forward to the next one!

I liked the first book of this series, this one is the second book and it was ok. It moved a little slow, lots of around and around build up for kind of an anticlimactic ending. Not a lot of mystery of who the "bad guy" is either. It turned out to be another low anxiety read.
The plot is still a good one and the characters are pretty solid. There is romance in the book but it's not more than kissing.
There were several hints throughout the book that gave me the impression there will be another book in this series, if so I will probably read that one too.

I have enjoyed the worldbuilding in these novels, and the characters most of the time. I liked the mystery and its resolution. However, 2/3 of the way in, I got really done with the high-school-drama of this slow burn romance plot nonsense. It wasn't helped by Luke's cluelessness re: women despite his awesome self-awareness, I started skimming. The last third could have used a better line edit both for typos and for repetition.

I liked where it ended, though.

Not sure if I'll read book 3. If I do, it won't be for awhile.

Nice cosy read, good storyline although a bit disappointed ending was quite abrupt and not as exciting as rest of build up. Good read though and I’ll read the next one

Loved this second installment of the Unholy Island series, especially the continued character development and world-building. Based on the titles, I’m wondering if each book will be focus on a different one of the island residents, which I wouldn’t mind at all since they are all interesting characters. Also very excited to learn that these novels take place in the same world as the delightful Crow investigations series. Keeping my fingers crossed for a crossover or two in the future! 🤞🏻

I've stopped saying that I like Fantasy books when I'm filling in questionnaires from publishers as I find that I get inundated with information about books featuring dragons and warlocks etc etc. When I read a Sarah Painter book I'm reminded just how good the genre can be.

The Book Keeper is the second book in the Unholy Island series and follows on straight from The Ward Witch. Luke Taylor has taken over the book shop on the Island following the death of Alvaris. It is a dream job for him and he is just starting to feel at one with the quirky store that literally has a mind of its own. Gradually it is revealing more of its secrets to him. He has really made a home here and now that he has settled he is realising that his feelings for Esme, the Ward Witch, are becoming deeper and deeper.

When Luke finds himself at deaths door after receiving a hexed book, life changes for everyone on the island and it is all they can do to try and save Luke's life. Is the new inhabitant on the island the automatic replacement for him?

Once again I've found myself gripped by the characters in this story. I didn't think that the magical world of the Crow Investigation series could be beaten but Unholy Island is my new favourite fantasy series. Where else can you find witches and kelpies and all kinds of other magical creatures that we haven't quite categorised yet. If the Island senses that you need help it just adopts you, gives you somewhere to live and allows you to stay.

My only gripe is that the stories are so short! I'm already itching for the next instalment.

Supplied by the author in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fantastic second installment of the cozy, witchy, Unholy Island series. The first book was just a mood read, I wanted to escape thrillers for a bit and dive into a magical world. Now, I cannot stop reading them and will immediately be moving onto book 3, completely ignoring my ARCs I should be working on. 🫶🖤

✨✨See my review for The Ward Witch for some background on Unholy Island✨✨

In this book, we get a much more intimate look at the life of the islands’ new Book Keeper, Luke. This is a role the island chose him for when their previous Book Keeper was murdered.

Luke is constantly finding new things in the shop but who knew bookkeeping on a remote island would be so dangerous! As he fights for his life and the lives of other specialty bookshops, we get a closer look at the intimacy building between Luke and Esme, the islands' Ward Witch, who is responsible for keeping the island safe and dangers - away.

We have hexed books, imposing strangers, a magical Bookshop and so much more here.

I am so happy I found this beautiful little world of people and cannot wait to dive into book 3 (which I just downloaded 🙃) but I also know I'll be so sad to say goodbye to these characters in the end!!

This was the second book in the Unholy Island series and the more that I read about the island, the more sure I am that it's somewhere I want to be. I love the coziness of Esme's bed and breakfast and the magical bookshop and the pub where all of the islanders talk over pints and stew. There's also the wild eeriness of the island itself. It was so easy to picture myself walking with Esme on her midnight treks. It was also fun to follow Luke and Esme along on their travels to Scotland, though I did wish that they didn't make it over the causeway in time.

I am already very invested in all of the island's characters and Painter always does a great job of leaving us wanting more.

The slow burn really killed me in this one and I really did enjoy how the interloper brought out some jealous feelings. I could feel the characters' frustrations and just wanted them to talk things out! While Painter's books typically have minimal spice, the romantic scenes that we do get are sweet and give enough details for the imagination to fill in the rest.

The mystery aspect in this story was super fun and I wasn't expecting the ending. While it took a bit to get going, I was racing to get to the end. I'm glad I don't have to wait too long before the next book comes out!

I'm really enjoying this series - it's a lovely setting of a windswept isolated island out in the North Sea, with some magical inhabitants. If you haven't already, read The Ward Witch first, as the plot points and character-building in the first book are quite important for this sequel.

The Book Keeper focuses on the island's bookshop and the growing friendship between Esme and Luke, who has become bookkeeper and defacto guardian of some of Unholy Island's secrets.

The female characters are written very well and they have interesting relationships with each other without too much reference to the male characters - even Esme's rivalry with the new islander, Kate Foster, is developed without becoming too clichéd. It is not the "handbags at dawn" female squabble that you'd find in a typical romance novel - feelings of insecurity and loss, and the threat to the Island's way of life and traditions from outsiders, are interesting sub-plots. Fingers crossed that there will be an Unholy Island Book #3!

I am such a fan of Sarah Painter’s books and series. This second book in the Unholy Island series, The Book Keeper is no exception. You know those movies you see and after watching them, you want to see them again because they are that great? Well I have that with Sarah’s books. Just finished The Book Keeper yesterday and this morning I just wanted to read it again! I know many just read them in one take, but I especially take my time. A cup of thee and a biscuit, sitting in my special reading chair, and then I allow myself a hour and a half to enjoy reading The Book Keeper, and that feels as such a treat! After this second book, the great characters that are the same as in book 1, feel already as family. The island is a place I would love to live myself and I definitely would be in the bookstore every day, and it’s not for Luke Taylor 😂 I can’t wait to find oud what book 3 will have installed for us, I know I am really looking forward to it!

WOW!….Just WOW! I enjoyed The Ward Witch…..and The Book Keeper was really excellent. I took my time reading it for a couple days to just to enjoy it and the charming people who live on the island. However, I stayed up entirely too late to finish this book last night……I couldn’t go to sleep until I knew how it ended. Wow! I can’t say anything more about the ending without spoiling it for you.
This book has everything I like in a book…..charming characters, a mystery, dogs and cats, Magick (not stage kinda magic….the real thing!), an evil doer doing evil deeds, a sentient bookshop, an island that is a sanctuary for people who need a safe place or are something “else”/something “more”/something “different”/or perhaps not quite human. There are no editing issues, and no cliffhanger endings.
So, curl up in a comfy chair with a cup of tea (maybe an entire pot) and enjoy…..take your time and savor life on a truly Magickal island.

This series quickly became one of my favourites. Lore is being dropped one after the other in every chapter. I am not fond of the but the writing is very self aware. When pointed out this way, it felt like the characters are very aware that it is an out of place behaviour. I was also not really a fan of but I think this is central to her character after . There is less time spent talking about the daily lives of the other residents which was what I was attracted to at first, but I find that I know more about who they are in this book, even when the descriptions were vague. I feel like the mystic is what keeps this series interesting. The romance part of this feels natural, as it is in real life.

Great follow up to the first book

The only complaint I have about these books is having to wait for the next one 😄. I came late to the party and so got to read the crow investigation novels one after the other. Though I'm hoping there's maybe more of those still to come...

While this series is a whole different story with a whole new set of characters there are satisfying ties to the other series and I love that they inhabit the same world. This series is going in a direction that might even explain some of the mysteries still unsolved in the crow novels. I love not knowing how it's going to pan out. Makes for a really worthwhile read.

The story in this book is nicely paced, has more of the same great characters and delivers more info on the nature of the island and its inhabitants. Highly recommend 😊

The first book in this series, The Ward Witch, was one of my favorite reads last year (and I reread it on audiobook this month, which was also great) so I was really looking forward to this one coming out.

Luke is still settling into his new role on Unholy Island and his feelings for their resident witch. He’s ready to give up looking for his missing brother but events conspire to keep him on edge and in danger.

I love the atmosphere of this book - it’s both gentle and ominous. There’s a sentient bookshop, a windswept shingle beach, and mysterious cursed books. I’ve become very invested in the characters and I’m rooting for Esme and Luke's slow burn romance. I can’t wait for book three!

This book is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin, a cozy little fantasy mystery. I like these kinds of books every so often, and as such thoroughly enjoyed this one. The stakes are just higher enough to invest in the plot, but there's never really a sense that things aren't going to turn out alright. The characters are likable, (Esme with her anxiety and fragility is particularly easy to invest in) and the magic implementation was surprisingly effective. It's a fairly soft magic system, but the author still manages to convey a sense of immense power or age in a couple scenes. There's a little bit of humor, just enough to help fill out the cozy feeling, and the mystery elements of the book were competently enough handled to keep me interested in their resolution.

Fantastic sequel to The Ward Witch

My only negative is that I've finished it! I can envisage Unholy Island so clearly and loved being back getting to know the inhabitants a little bit more. As the title suggests, the focus is on Luke as he settles in as The Book Keeper. As you might expect, the threads of fate are not going to let life be quiet and simple for long. As with the Crow series, Sarah paints such interesting and compelling characters set against rich and vibrant backdrops. You dive in and feel as if you're walking alongside the emerging story arc. Can't wait for book 3!

A fun story with a cute romace

A very enjoyable entry to the catalogue of tales of Unholy Island. A frightful mystery begins to unravel around the special and secretive island hideaway for magical and not-quite-human residents of Unholy Island. It's up to the new Book Keeper and the Ward Witch to figure out what's happening. They begin to feel the pull towards each other just as a stranger appears on the island. Who is this new and shiny- looking mainlander? What are her intentions?

A brisk and fun read, I enjoyed following the story and look forward to seeing what Sarah Painter has on store for the next time we can visit Unholy Island.

Another Blinder

Every book gets better, this will not disappoint. Pick up from here or continue the series, go back and re-read or dive ( that's me) in following on from UnI #1. Any-way you choose, this works. As a fan I follow UhI & Crow, I know Prof Painter has more but I can visit all of the choices later, for now Unholy Island (UhI) has 'got me. ' Try it, love it, enjoy. This is one of the 'good ones' . Thanks to Sarah Painter for another slice of magic, now comes the classic fan request...encore.
PS ' Crow...owes me a favour ' wow! Cannot wait for #3

These books are bad for me!

These books are bad for me precisely because they’re so good, I lose most of a day and a half every time one comes out. It feels like a bit of a guilty pleasure.

I read to feel cocooned and thats exactly what these books do, paint a world that I recognise but distinctly different from my life. A london that’s not quite the one I lived in, and now an island that feels a bit like Arran, but definitely isn’t. It’s very comforting. One of my all time favourite writers.

This series is growing in me

After having a hard time getting into The Ward Witch, I wasn't sure this series was for me but decided to give the second book a try anyway. I am glad I did. I loved the storyline and the characters seem much more relatable to me than in the first book (which could have been entirely on me, I must admit). I am looking forward to the third book and am hoping it isn't the last one but even if it is, i will devour it once it's released. I definitely recommend this series.
