Last Girl Missing: A Detective Callie Forde Mystery

Rate this book
She wanted to avenge her father. She needed to save herself.

When Detective Callie Forde is called to the home of a missing teenaged girl, she doesn't initially suspect foul play. Hampstead is a quiet college town. It's safe—if you don't count the other girl. But as the hours wear on with no sign of Natalie, the police are forced to consider the teenager might have been abducted.

No one is more surprised than Callie when all their leads are eerily similar to that of another case, the five-year-old cold case that ended with a botched investigation, a shooting, and her father in a wheelchair.
Determined not to make the same mistakes he made, Callie races to find the girl, avenge her father, and maybe, stop history from repeating itself.

Thank you @netgalley for the ARC of Last Girl Missing by K.L. Murphy. This is a great detective mystery that is perfectly paced. I liked the interweaving of stories from the past and present and the tie in of the detective with her dad. As a mother of teenage daughters, this book played on the fear that is in the back of your mind that something like this could happen with young women and the internet. I liked the detective, Callie Forde and hope there are more books with her in the future.

Detective Forde is called to investigate a missing teen. This case seems to parallel another case that her father was on which left him an invalid. Callie works to solve both murders and to avenge her father.

Once I picked this book up, I couldn't put it down! Detective Callie Forde is racing against time to find a 16 year old girl who has disappeared from a sleepy college town-much like the girl who, 5 years ago, had disappeared but never been found. I found myself hooked with the urgency, following characters closely and forming my own theories. Just when I thought I had solved the case, something would happen to send me down a different path! Last Girl Missing gave me enough to want more-I'm so glad there are more Callie Forde books to read!

Last Girl Missing: A Detective Callie Forde Mystery by K.L Murphy

This novel is about a teenage girl that goes missing after dabbling on the internet social media. Detective Callie Forde is working the case which is oddly familiar to a case her father investigated years before.

I enjoyed reading this book the plot was not overdone and it was a very believable story.

Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This fast-moving story follows Detective Callie Ford and her partner Zel attempt to locate a missing, later revealed to be kidnapped, sixteen-year-old girl in Hampstead, a quiet, college town.

When Natalie's disappearance begins to bear a resemblance to another girl who went missing years earlier, alarm bells ring for Callie. This older investigation destroyed Callie's father's professional life (he was the detective in charge) and health, so Callie does her best to keep focused on Natalie, and not get swept up into her personal feelings about the previous case's impact on her family.

Of course, that doesn't work, so even while Callie and Zel get closer, after frustrating lead after frustrating lead, Callie decides to shake her father out of his depression and get his help.

I was hooked from the opening pages of this story. Callie is carrying a lot of emotional baggage during this case, and though it brings up lots of pain for her family and for the family of the other girl missing five years now, Callie keeps pushing forward, and manages to solve this case and also break through to her father.

I enjoyed this book, and the way author K.L. Murphy kept up the sense of urgency and sadness. The resolution to Callie's case worked for me, and I hope we see more Callie Ford books in the future.

Thank you Net Galley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review. I was surprised by this book! I thought the characters were well developed and the plot didn’t hit a dull spot! I was shocked by the ending in a good way - I had it all wrong and I love that! This was a 3 star book because I thought I had it all figured out and it turned a 4 star with that ending and conclusion!

I thought this mystery was done really well. It has some action scenes but I loved following the investigation and seeing how Callie put all the information together. I thought Callie was a likeable character so it was easy to get sucked up in. The pacing and reveal of information was done great. It shows the dangers of social media, especially for teens, while keeping you guessing.

This was the first book I've ever read by K.L. but I enjoyed it. It contains a good mystery, a nuanced detective Callie who has a complicated relationship with her father who used to be a cop, and was fast paced and engaging.

A missing girl reminds Callie of a girl her dad tried to locate, who also went missing, 5 years ago but he got sidelined in a situation gone wrong. I loved how one small, seemingly unremarkable thing, ties the 2 cases together.

I was so sure I knew who was the bad in this book but I was so wrong! It twisted my head in a good way and it made a lot of sense (sad but made sense).

Based in Hampstead, the suspension plot revolves around Detective Callie Forde, who is on the search for a missing teenage girl. What seems to be a clear cut case quickly turns into something a lot darker, bearing all the hall marks of a five-year-old case that paralyzed Callie’s father. Yet, as she goes deeper, she finds series of secrets in a materialistic and completely dysfunctional family in parallel with struggling against the time to stop a serial criminal.

💡 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬:

• Small town setting
• Cold case
• Dysfunctional family
• Serial crimes

👩‍💼 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭:

Callie Forde is an advantageous heroine with rather high intelligence, assertiveness, and rich bonds with her father. Their desire to catch culprits and punish them for their crime, specifically her father’s murder, makes her be a good detective. Both historical and contemporary plots create interest and variety to the events and thus make the story more interesting.

🔍 𝐌𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬:

This is a detective mystery novel with neatly woven plot and many a mislead and twist. This can be attributed to the fact that the pacing is perfect and this keeps the audiences in suspense throughout the book. This sense of small-town drama enhances the plot and the stakes feel both like the characters are being personally affected and the consequences of their choices would be dire.

All in all, LAST GIRL MISSING sets a pace that does not allow readers to put the book down at any point. I would like to highly recommend it to anyone who likes to read detective mysteries and thriller books. This is the beginning of Callie Forde series so I am looking forward to reading more of her cases in the future.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.

Detective Callie Forde is no stranger to solving mysteries, but when she’s called to the home of a missing teenage girl in the quiet college town of Hampstead, she doesn’t initially suspect foul play. After all, Hampstead seems safe—unless you count the other girl, the one who vanished without a trace.

As the hours wear on with no sign of Natalie, the police are forced to consider the possibility of abduction. But what makes this case even more chilling is its eerie similarity to a five-year-old cold case—one that ended in a botched investigation, a shooting, and left Callie’s father in a wheelchair.

Determined not to repeat the mistakes of the past, Callie races against time to find Natalie, avenge her father, and perhaps prevent history from repeating itself. But the deeper she digs, the more secrets she uncovers, and the danger escalates.

K.L. Murphy’s “Last Girl Missing” is a gripping mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The writing is sharp, the pacing relentless, and the characters well-drawn. Callie Forde is a flawed yet determined detective, haunted by her past and driven by justice. The college town setting adds an intriguing layer of tension, and the plot twists will keep you guessing until the very end.

If you’re a fan of suspenseful crime fiction with strong female protagonists, this book is a must-read. K.L. Murphy weaves a web of intrigue, betrayal, and hidden motives that will leave you eagerly turning the pages. Get ready for a rollercoaster ride through secrets and lies, where nothing is as it seems.

I always enjoyed stories that have and old cold case that connects to the current cases the detectives are working. Callie has followed in her father's footsteps in becoming a detective and so when she gets called to the house of a missing girl, she first feels that this might just be a runaway teen. But as more time passes with no word from the missing girl she knows something is wrong. Digging through her social media and interviewing all her friends they know she was supposed to babysit for a new to the area family. But that family does not exist and the house where this job was supposedly, is for sale on a secluded street. Finding a few items that could be clues, Callie knows the clock is ticking. Once piece of evidence has a tie back to an old case of her father's but that hardly seems possible. But could it be? That was the case that ended her father's career as well as his motivation for life. Having a strained relationship with him lately, she is afraid to mention this case and what she has found but no one else knew that case better than her father. She cannot let another missing girl become another cold case and discussing this case with him may just be what it will take to find this girl before it's too late. I really enjoyed this story and how the case was part of the father/daughter relationship. Thank you to the author for the complementary novel and to Suzy Approved Book Tours for the invite. This review is of my own opinion and accord.

Callie Ford returns home, determined to find the person responsible not only for the missing girl of the past but for the devastating effects on her father. She's now the detective he once was and another girl is missing. The trail of clues reminds her of the previous case and she asks her father questions about the case, though initially he's not very responsive. Callie's uncovering secrets, some going back to the original case. Her search for the killer now puts Callie in danger.

The story has all the elements of a thriller and at the same time, her struggle with her father is poignant. It is well-written, the pace is good, and character development is strong. The suspense and tension kept me reading. This is the first in a series and I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in the hopes that I would post an honest review. This has not affected the content of my review in any way.

This was my second time reading K.L. Murphy, and once again, I found her writing pulled me in from the start and kept me engrossed until the final pages.

Detective Callie Forde is on the case of a local missing teenage girl. At first, Callie and her partner Zel question whether this may be a case of a wayward or rebellious teen. But then things start to resemble an abduction case from years ago. A case Callie’s father had been working, the case that left her father in a wheelchair, and the young girl was never found.

This has all the workings of a police procedural without getting bogged down with the paperwork and legal legwork. It’s more about the human element and connections. It is always difficult to read about missing children. The author brought in so many emotions, interesting clues, and then a surprising twist, making for an incredibly suspenseful read.

Detective Callie Forde is investigating the case of a missing teenage girl. The girl was a rebel, and it is believed she met someone online.
Callie's retired father was investigating a similar case five years prior to this, and it is still unsolved. Callie has to find Natalie, the cases are very similar.

I have never read a book by this author, but I hope to find and read a few more.

The story is well plotted, full of red herrings and twists, and Callie is a good detective.

I liked Callie, she is wise, and outspoken, and has a close bond with her father.

Hopefully this will be a series of Callie Forde books. I recommend.
4/5 stars from me.

Last Girl Missing: A Detective Callie Forde Mystery by K.L Murphy is an excellent mystery that I really enjoyed reading.

Detective Callie Forde is looking for a 16-year-old missing girl who had some activity on social media before her disappearance.

The mystery is similar to one that Callie's father had investigated.

The characters are well written and fleshed out.

The mystery kept me flipping the pages.

I really enjoyed Callie's character and the urgency in which the story unfolded.

An excellent crime mystery. Hopefully there will be more books with this fantastic character.

This book is a book that once you start reading you won’t put it down!!
When a teenage girl goes missing Detective Callie Forde is immediately drawn back to a case her father worked on, this was five years ago but her father got sidelined in a situation gone wrong. What seems to be a clear cut case quickly soon turns into something a lot darker. This one is a doozie! A great detective story involving two seemingly similar cases, one her father investigated five years ago and the one Callie's investigating now. The tension rises as the days go by and the cases go unsolved. The whodunnit aspect was well written with a surprising reveal. It kept me guessing and I didn't see it coming. I was stumped. This was very highly entertaining and a book I definitely recommend. I look forward to more of Callie's adventures in the future. Hopefully her Dad will be there too!

A mystery well played out by the author. Callie Forde, a detective, is placed on the case of a missing teenager. As a mother, I could feel the anguish and desperate urge to find this young girl. For Callie, her father’s past experience pushes her all the harder.

The suspense drives you to try to solve it because a child is involved. As a parent, one of our worst fears is our child home missing. But no sooner do you think you have it all figured out, something new pops up. Kudos to this author for a great read and keeping me on my toes. Looking forward to reading more by her.

This is a riveting mystery that adds in police procedural which keeps the book moving quickly.

The read starts off fast as a mother realizes her teen daughter hasn’t come home from a babysitting job. The main character, Detective Callie Forde, begins this investigation.

As the investigation continues, Callie’s father, who was detective, thinks there may be a connection on case he worked 5 years prior.

This is one where I don’t want to say too much because each layer of the read builds on the conclusion, but I will say this is a very intricately written mystery.

This one also brings to the front the use of technology in both the crime and the investigation of that crime.

I'm a huge cold case fan and especially enjoy when they solve the case (which happens every episode). Callie is a detective, just like her dad. What starts as a runaway teenager soon turns to a cases of a missing girl. While investigating, she realizes the girl was supposed to babysit for a family that doesn't exist in a house that is for sale. Then she finds evidence that resembles a cold case her father originally worked. He's her best resource. What a fantastic read with great characters you will cheer for while turning the pages in rapid succession. Highly recommend for the crime readers who love seeing cold cases solved.

This book made me want to crawl out of my skin, but, you know, in the best way possible.

Identifying with the helpless, middle-aged, clueless mom, whose daughter was kidnapped, is not a comfortable feeling. I’d much rather have seen myself as the arse-kicking detective, yet here we are.

The urgency and frustration of all the main characters are so visceral, you feel them in your body.

I enjoyed the sleepy town backdrop, the ties to a past case, and Callie’s father, and the partnership between Callie and Zel.

I’m very much hoping this gets turned into a series, so we can revisit some of the characters…just as soon as they get off the crutches.

This is one of those books that kept me hooked. I could feel the helplessness, urgency, and tension that the characters were experiencing. Having a child go missing is one of the biggest fears I have had as a mother, so the emotional damage hit close.
I love how Callie wanted to find redemption for her father, who was injured and now in a wheelchair after things went wrong with the case of another girl who went missing five years before. She's trying to avoid his mistakes and keep from making some of her own.
The book was perfectly paced, and I could not put it down. It was the right blend of mystery, sadness, and urgency! A fantastic read!

This is the second book I've read by K.L. Murphy and I really enjoyed it. The writing style is captivating, the characters compelling, and the mystery intriguing. The case resembles one from five years ago and I loved the way the pieces of the puzzle came together. I couldn't guess the perpetrator and that's always a bonus with a police procedural. The suspense had me turning the pages long after my bedtime and as a fan of Detective Callie Forde I'm hoping there will be more books written with her on the case.

This was an engaging small town mystery about a 16-year-old girl who is missing. When detective Callie Forde starts to connect the dots, suddenly everything seems oddly similar to an old case from five years ago. A case that was Callie's fathers and left him in a wheelchair. I love a good crime fiction story set in a small town. This had me guessing all along. I really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to other Detective Callie Forde mysteries.

This is my second read of the authors. Is it a case of is it coincidence or is there a new missing girl with facts eerily similar to her father’s case. Throw in some family drama and I was hooked from the start.

I liked how the two cases were handled in the book. I felt for Cassie and her family and liked the balance of personal to work life for her.

And I mostly liked that the case was able to surprise me. That’s always a plus in a police procedural. It’s fast paced and kept me wanting more as I read it. And it looks like this might be the start of a series.

This was a Goodreads giveaway book. A teenage girl goes missing and Detective Callie Forde is assigned to the case. Her father had been a detective until he was seriously injured on the job five years previously and had to retire. He had been pursuing another missing teenage girl and that case was never solved.

As the story unfolds, there are concerns that the old case may be related to the current case. A gripping and engaging story.
