When Sophie Thatcher wakes up in a room she doesn’t recognize after a night she can’t remember, she assumes she had too much to drink and went home with a date.
Except…the date is nowhere to be found. No one is.
The space she finds herself in is completely nondescript—the walls bare, fridge empty. And just when she thought things couldn’t get bleaker or more confusing, she realizes the doors are locked from the outside.
Trapped inside an unfamiliar place and faced with a clock counting down to a mysterious deadline, Sophie tries desperately to recall the hours missing from her memory and formulate a plan to escape, but each attempt proves more futile than the last.
Hidden away from the world and unable to contact the people who would care that she’s missing, Sophie has two questions ringing in her mind: Who would bring her to this place? And why?
When she’s joined in her personal prison by someone she never thought she’d see again, everything changes and the idea of her being a random target instantly vanishes.
Whoever brought Sophie to this place has plans for her and, if she can’t figure out a way to escape before time runs out, her fate may be to remain hidden forever.
Ominous, dark, and completely disturbing, this pulse-pounding thriller from the twisted mind of million-copy bestselling author Kiersten Modglin is unlike anything you’ve read before.

If you're into suspense and thrillers, this book will keep you hooked! It kicks off with Sophie waking up in a room and the poor girl has no clue how she got there. Zero memory, zero answers. Then, things get even juicier when someone else shows up trapped with her. Oh boy, that’s when the tension really ramps up!
The story definitely dives into some dark and twisty territory as secrets start pouring out. It got intense, and while I’m not entirely sure how I feel about all the reveals, it clearly didn’t put me off too much—I still gave it 4 stars! Gripping stuff, for sure.

Sophie wakes up after a night of drinking not knowing where she is or who she was with. Oof, not a great start to the day and it’s not going to get any better once she realizes she’s locked in with no way out.
I am hit or miss with this author, but this one was a hit for me. It was super suspenseful, but not in a slow moving way. I was really invested in what was going on and very curious how it would all play out. Was the reasoning for the abduction a little lackluster for me? Yes, but I still enjoyed it overall.
Narration notes: She did a really great job. She made me feel like I was right there with how emotional she sounded.
Faced past, exciting, gripping, suspenseful, shocking, and dramatic! What would you do if you woke up in a place you didn't recognize, had no memory of how you got there, and had no idea how to get out????? That is Sophie's dilemma in The Hidden.
Sophie is freaked out and frightened when she finds she is locked inside an unknown place with a countdown on display. Then she is joined by a blast from her past and neither of them knows what is going on and why they are there!
I loved how fast paced this book was. It had me thinking that this would make a great 'Black Mirror' episode or a great suspense thriller movie. There is never a dull moment. I was on the edge of my seat wanting to know what was going to happen next and how things were going to end.
Huge props for this being entertaining, shocking and suspenseful. I listened to the audiobook and thought the narrator did a great job. This is a fast listen/read that involves characters being 'trapped' and trying their best to figure out why and how to get free. This made for a thrilling and exciting read.
Thank you to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
I've read several Kiersten Modglin novels so far, keep giving them chances as I'm trying to find one I thoroughly enjoy. This one was the best so far out of all of the ones I've read. It was intriguing and a bit suspenseful. Had a little bit of a spicy moment. Overall a decent read!
This is a quick thriller. It’s a lot different than Kiersten Modglin’s previous books (not that this is unusual, she likes to go in new directions constantly). I’ll admit this one wasn’t my favorite but I did enjoy it. The narrator did an ok job with the main character but her other voices weren’t as good. Sophie wakes up in a strange apartment and soon finds she is locked inside. As she tries to escape she realizes she can’t remember anything from what happened before. Her college sweetheart Ethan joins her and the two try to escape, but it seems impossible. There’s a menacing countdown clock in the living room and they can’t figure out what it is counting down to. Overall I gave this one 3.5 stars rounded up because it is a story that keeps your attention and goes super quickly.
I've been a longtime fan of this author, and I agonized over this review. Marketed as an LGBTQ+ thriller, my first issue with this book was that the representation seemed both forced and superficial. There really wasn't a deep and meaningful relationship between protagonist Sophie and her 'girlfriend'.
Thrillers and horror make up the majority of what I read, and I have absolutely no problem with suspending disbelief, but I just couldn't do it with this plot. Sophie wakes up in a nondescript apartment, assuming she once again had too much to drink and went home with a random guy from a bar. Unable to find her purse or her phone, she decides to just leave and worry about those items later--but she finds that the apartment is a prison of sorts. The door is locked from the outside, and the windows won't break. She assumes that she's a victim of a predator until someone from her past shows up in the apartment, shattering that theory.
Her stories usually go off the rails in the best of ways, but this one was just so unbelievable, I couldn't buy into it. The short length and concentrated plot usually work in her favor, but this one needed so much more character development.
I did not read an ARC copy. I purchased a paperback copy from Amazon, and this book is available now.
The Hidden written by Kiersten Modglin is a fast-paced, bingeable, psychological thriller story.
Gail Shalan did a brilliant job narrating this story, and I felt myself immersed in the mysterious room alongside Sophie Thatcher. Kiersten Modglin used flashbacks with great effect in this story and offered many twists and turns that kept my attention to the end.
Well done Kiersten, you have a mind unlike any other!
Format: Audiobook through Hoopla Listen time: 5hours, 8 minutes
It's been a while since I've read anything by Kierstin Modglin, the Queen of Twists and Turns.
The Hidden begins with Sophie the MC wakes up hungover in a room she's not familiar with and no clue how she got there.
Multiple timeliness and single 1st person POV, present tense.
I wasn't necessarily a fan of the narraton in this audiobook, she sounded like she was out of breath throughout the entire book and her male voices all sounded like Thurston Howell from Gilligan's Island.
This wasn't her best work. I got pretty bored with the story. No twists and turns like her previous work.
The ending felt rushed. The Hidden definitely won't be memorable for me.
Thanks to the author,Dreamscape Media and Netgalley for this ARC.
This review will be shared on Goodreads & Netgalley.
This was definitely original and unique. Not sure how I completely feel about it. It was a really good read just darker than her norm but not in a bad way necessarily. Still kept me turning the pages and wanted to find out what happened at the end.
3.5⭐️ this was a quick and easy read but a bit whacky! I had no idea what was happening for a while there. It was alright! It felt sci-fi at times and was for sure a psychological thriller. While the characters were losing their minds it felt like so were we as readers.
I’ve read a lot of this authors books and most are a huge hit or a miss for me and this one lands somewhere in the middle. It is unlike anything thing else I’ve read by her.
Oh that’s messed up. In the best possible way. I was confused the entire time and how everything wrapped up was fantastic. Modglin always delivers a great thriller. When our MC finds herself in a house with no memory of how she got there she has to find out why she’s locked, why her ex boyfriend is here and who has done this. Would definitely recommend to my thriller girlies. The narrator did a fantastic job. Thanks to NetGalley for the chance to review!
I’ll never turn down a Kiersten book and this one definitely didn’t disappoint!
The story is as always fast paced and easy to digest, and i think it’s safe to say this plot is probably a lot of peoples worst nightmare.
When Sophie wakes up feeling horrendously hung over in an unfamiliar room she assumes she had too much to drink the previous night and ended up at her dates home, however when she looks around and realizes not only is nobody else there, but she is completely trapped with no way of escape.
Things go from bad to worse when a person from her past resurfaces in the same predicament, at this point she really doesn’t know what to believe. Has she been kidnapped? If so how does her kidnapper know about her connection to this other person? Is this some psychological experiment she didn’t sign up for? What is the end goal? The search for answers as well as an escape will keep you glued to the pages!
I will say though that the book seemed to end kind of abruptly. After spending the entire book searching for an escape the ending was just too quick and easy for my liking. I also felt like one of the characters did a complete 180 on their personality traits which seemed a little too convenient, potentially rushing to finish?
Thank you to Kiersten Modglin and Dreamscape media for the ALC!
Have you ever read a book that caused you to scream out loud at fictional characters? Well….this one will do it.
This book was WILD! It was also extremely stressful the ENTIRE time. I assumed at some point it would calm down a minute. Maybe they would sit down for a nice cup of tea or order a pizza but no. The hits just kept on coming.
Per usual, I did not see any of the 742,000 twists coming…I never do with Modglin’s books. Each one left me more shocked than last.
This book will leave you on guard and suspicious of every person you know. Hell, I don’t even trust my cats at this point LOL
What an amazing thriller audiobook! It was quick, suspenseful, and heart pounding. Sophie finds herself trapped and attempts to piece things together. Is this really happening? Is her mind playing tricks on her? While many parts of this story is typical locked-room thriller, the excellent writing and narration pulled me in and held my attention from beginning to end. This could easily be finished in one sitting.
Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for this audio ARC. This review will be shared on NetGalley, Goodreads, and Amazon.
Sophie wakes up confused, disoriented, and in a strange place. She's so mad at herself. She has to stop drinking. She can't keep doing this! As she prepares for her walk of shame, she realizes she can't walk out of this place at all. There's no sign of anyone and the place doesn't look lived in. Where is she??
Sophie is in her own personal Hell. She can't remember what happened the days leading up to this or how she arrived at this point. She doesn't even know if that matters anymore because she's trapped, BUT WAIT, there's more: her ex has suddenly appeared. Just what we all want when we're hungover, crusty, and scared, right? Well, at least she isn't alone.
Why is he there and who is responsible for this? I was suspicious of everyone at some point and I made a few little guesses coincidentally about general things but I truly had no idea what was going to happen next. It had me on the edge of my seat. The audio narrator was amazing. She really brought the story to life.
Never change, K.Mod! I can't get enough of these quick reads. I devour them as quickly as they come.
This was another solid listen from Keirsten Modglin! Sophie wakes up after a night out in an apartment she doesn’t recognise, she is trapped and there is a count down on display!
It quickly becomes clear that she’s been kidnapped by someone unknown and everything gets more complicated when she discovers her ex Ethan is also trapped with her!
There are alternate chapters to Sophie’s past and I was hooked wanting to discover not only who had kidnapped her but why!
Kiersten Modglin is just great, fantastic a freakin mastermind when it comes to suspense and thrillers. She has become an auto read/buy for me! This one was wild, and the end?! 🤯
This one wasn’t a favorite, but it was still readable. It felt more like a cat-and-mouse story, and it didn’t fully grab me.
The book follows Sophie, who wakes up in a strange room with no memory of how she got there—at first, she blames it on drinking too much the night before. But she quickly realizes she’s been locked in. When someone else is thrown into the room with her, they have to figure out why they’re there and how to escape.
Thank you to the author and publisher for this arc! Fun fact, I am a big fan of KM and also pre-ordered this book, so I already had the Kindle version of this book locked and loaded on my Kindle but decided to give it a listen instead. As an audiobook, I thought the narrator did an excellent job! I know next to nothing regarding what goes into preparing for narrating a book, but my experience with this one was excellent - the narrator expressed plenty of emotion, was clear and concise, and seemed to meet the challenges expected of them to create effective characters in this book. The book itself was not bad, but it wasn't my favorite of Kiersten's. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't overly memorable for me either. I feel like I have read this book before, so in that regard, for me it was a miss - but still entertaining in its own right. 3 stars
Just when I think Kiersten cannot be any more sinister, she goes and does it. I found this one to be very nerve-wracking and realistic.
There is so much to unpack with this one between friendships, heartache, self awareness, and ultimately trust. Yes, this is an edge of your seat, heart racing thriller but it's also dark and at times disturbing. My jaw hit the floor towards the end when the first twist was revealed. Then we spiral into chaos for the remainder of the story in true Modglin fashion.
It's normally hit or miss for me with Ms. Modglin, but dang, lately I've had nothing but misses. The suspense is there, your interest is there, and then the end is so fucking stupid, my fucking eyes might roll out of my head on the floor, and out the door like a damn meatball.
In case you were wondering wtf I was talking about 😂
🎶On top of spaghetti, All covered with cheese, I lost my poor meatball, When somebody sneezed.
It rolled off the table, And on to the floor, And then my poor meatball, Rolled out of the door.🎶
Another KMod win! This latest novel by Kiersten feels like it could be on made the big screen for sure. I don’t want to spoil too much, as I believe experiencing the story with minimal prior knowledge is best, the confusion is part of the fun.
One notable shift in this book compared to her others is the ending, which feels surprisingly happier compared to her previous works.
The characters are wonderfully crafted, and as usual, I found myself second-guessing who to trust. Sophie, the main character, resonated with me deeply—her struggles and growth felt incredibly relatable.
Here are some quotes I loved that might convince you to pick this one up:
“We aren’t estranged necessarily, nothing has happened to make me cut them off. There came a point when, through therapy I realized our relationship was never going to be what I hoped for. My parents will never be the type of parents to think about me or check up on me. I will always have to call or text them first.”
“I have to choose my own happiness even when it stings.”
“I want a family that feels like they would choose me if they had a chance.”
I definitely recommend this one…just like every other book I’ve read by KM.
this wasn’t the worst book I’ve ever read or anything, but it wasn’t the greatest either. I think waking up in a random home with someone you never thought you’d see again is pretty strange and an alluring plot, but it was hard to truly invest in the story. The backstory for the characters is a little too loose for me to truly care for them or their fate, but if you want a quick listen that gives The Hunt vibes, but the circumstances are less redneck vs. liberal and more just overall misogynistic circumstances, then you may enjoy this read/listen.
While I did not enjoy this, it was a quick semi-entertaining popcorn thriller.
Most of Kiersten’s books are absolutely ridiculous and if you read them mindlessly they are fine. I found this one to be particularly ridiculous, especially the ending and finding out that she was drugged with lube???? I’m sorry, what? I feel like 2 stars is generous for this. Also weird that this is labeled as an LGBT thriller.

Quite possibly the worst book I’ve ever read. At least in top three. Four+ hours of my life I’ll never get back. I think it was a fever dream. You know how they’re extremely unbelievable and you wake thinking wth was that cause NOTHING made sense. Yeh. This is that. But you’ll definitely get how thirsty she was without realizing it. {smacks self} ugh.
This one was just alright for me. I feel like I've read a similar story before (i.e., All the Little Raindrops and Look in the Mirror), and I enjoyed those much more.
I felt like the beginning was really slow and the ending was fast. Quick and intriguing read, but not a ton of substance.
Thank you, Netgalley, the author, and Dreamscape Media for the gifted audio book! ❤️ #gifted. My review is comprised of my honest thoughts.
Read this book if you like: Locked door, fast-paced reads, multiple timelines
Whatttt. I had no idea what was going to happen. The narration was well done. I wouldn't change a thing. I couldn't stop listening. It was suspenseful and fast-paced. I highly recommend it!
