She invented Mr. Right…just in time for the holidays.
Every tangled web starts with one tiny white lie. The kind you spin when you’re desperate.
One day I, Mia D’Angelo, third-year pediatric resident, was telling my mom that I’d finally met the perfect guy. Gushing about how amazing he was. And how happy I was.
It was all true. Until my "perfect guy" turned out to be my co-worker and my only competitor for a spot in the best practice in town…and then suddenly I was dumped…again. But I kept going with the stories, to get her through a very tough time.
My mom’s health crisis ended, and just when I thought things had settled down, my family wanted to meet my wonderful boyfriend for Christmas.
So I asked (okay, begged) just about every male I knew under forty, except for Dr. Braxton Hughes.
Don’t get me wrong. I could always count on him in a pinch. At work, that is.
Brax is an amazing pediatrician, but he would never fit the bill as a boyfriend. Maybe in looks. And charm. And his big heart. The problem is that he’s the biggest commitment-phobe this side of the Mississippi.
He’s the kind of guy I would definitely never take home for Christmas. There’d be no kissin’ under the mistletoe, no canoodling under the tree—because my heart could not survive falling for him again.
My car is packed and I’m down to no one, when magically, there he is, duffle in hand, melt-me smile on his face.
Oh, joy.
Keeping it professional is going to be a whole lot harder than I thought. Especially when he charms my parents, my whole family, and even my dog.
And Dr. Wrong…well, he’s suddenly looking awfully right.
Miranda Liasson is a bestselling author who writes about the important relationships in women’s lives. Her heartwarming and humorous romances have won numerous accolades and have been praised by Entertainment Weekly for the way she “deals with so much of what makes life hard . . . without ever losing the warmth and heart that characterize her writing.” A proud native of Northeast Ohio, she and her husband live in a neighborhood of old homes that serve as inspiration for her books. She is very proud of her three young adult children. And though every day she thinks about getting a dog, she fears a writer’s life may bore the poor animal to tears. When she’s not writing or enjoying books herself, she can be found biking along the old Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath trails in the beautiful Ohio MetroParks. Miranda loves to hear from readers!
the setup… Mia D’Angelo is a third-year pediatric resident vying for a spot in a coveted practice. Her top competition is Braxton (Brax) Hughes, the chief over the interns. They dated briefly but long enough for her to share that information with her mother. Unfortunately, she didn’t have the heart to tell her about their breakup during Mom’s health crisis and embellished the so-called relationship even more. Now that the crisis has ended, her family wants to meet the wonderful man in her life and has invited him home for Christmas. Mia’s attempts to find a friend to be her fake boyfriend fail but Brax steps up and agrees to be…her boyfriend?
the heart of the story… On the surface, this feels quite lighthearted but both Mia and Brax have some serious histories. She was dumped by her previous boyfriend, her home town love, right before he eloped with someone else. It’s why she hasn’t returned home to face the town. Brax may look like the all-American dream but his childhood was anything but. Both are letting this baggage get in the way but the charm of the season and her family goes a long way to bridging those gaps.
the narration… Marni Penning was delighful as Mia, capturing all of her angst nicely. Noah Cumberland’s baritone made me swoon. Both were great storytellers, too.
the bottom line… While so much of this may feel like the traditional Hallmark movie, there are some serious issues underlying the lightness. Mia’s residency is in the pediatric oncology unit and she brings her own personal experience. I loved how they added authenticity and weight, providing layers that made this substantive and more interesting. I’m thrilled this is the beginning of a new series as there’s some unfinished business and I’m all in.
This is a well-written, entertaining, contemporary holiday romance novel. It is a second chance romance with a likable, intelligent female protagonist, an engaging, kind and caring male protagonist, wit, a touch of humor, small town charm, a loving family, supportive friends, a bit of holiday magic, a heartwarming romance, and a gratifying conclusion. I listened to the audio book, and the narrators, Ms. Marni Penning and and Mr. Noah Cumberland, who has a captivating voice, are truly talented and do an outstanding job depicting the characters and their personalities. I am looking forwarding to reading Caleb's story with great anticipation. Many thanks to Ms. Liasson, NetGalley and Hawthorne House Press/Victory Editing NetGalley, from whom I received an advanced listener copy of this delightful novel. This is my honest opinion.
Take Me Home for Christmas is a heartwarming and humorous story about a pediatric resident who will do just about anything for her family – and a man who grew up without one. It’s also so much more than a fun “fake boyfriend” romance…Mia’s journey is about finding the courage to step into her own destiny. Hope you enjoy the swoony romance and the holiday cheer…and that you enjoy Mia and Brax’s path to happily-ever-after as much as I did writing it!
I absolutely loved this book, and I can not wait to read more about Oak Bluff and the setting it was to die for. This is such a feel-good Christmas story. I liked how the author wrote the story and the story of Mia and Brax. You will not want to pass up this remarkable Christmas story with all the trimmings for that feel-good fuzzy feeling.
Thank you to the publisher, NetGalley, and the author for allowing me to read and review this book.
I loved this Christmas romance between a third year pediatric resident, Mia and the charming pediatrician, Dr. Braxton Hughes. It was full of heart, love, kindness and inspiration, I couldn't put it down and kept smiling and getting teary eyed because of the sweetness of the story. I am happy to bee introduced to this author with this book, I will definitely seek out her older work as well as future books.
I've read several books by Miranda Liasson, so it was great seeing a new series starting off with a Christmas book. Mia D’Angelo, is a third-year pediatric resident. She shared with her mom how she finally met the perfect guy and how happy she was. Then, they found out that they would be working together, and were competing for the same position. He broke it off, and there she was, dumped again. Her mom had been so happy for her that she couldn't tell her yet. Her mom was undergoing treatment for cancer and Mia was worried stress would cause her to have a set back. Now it's Christmas and her family is expecting her to bring her boyfriend home. Mom's health crisis is over, but she still hadn't told her the truth. She asked every eligible guy she knew if they would go with her and pretend, but with no luck. When Dr. Braxton Hughes gets wind of what is going on, he says he will go with her. The problem is, Braxton is the ex. She has to keep it professional while they are there, but it is harder than she thought, especially when she sees a totally different side of the hard working doctor.
This was a fun forced proximity/fake dating story. Mia is so insecure about a lot of things. Her twin sister died when she was young and the guilt that she didn't save her was buried deep inside. That was why she wanted to become a doctor in the first place. Brax is a wonderful, swoon-worthy character. He was kind, charming, handsome her whole family loved him, even her dog. Brax has a painful past and lots of secrets that kept him from commitment, but as he gets to see Mia with her family and learn more about her past, he begins to thaw. Can the fact that they are still both after that coveted job in the pediatric practice in town keep them apart? This was a fun story, full of festive moments, family times and sweet growing care and affection. It had lots of warm, fuzzy moments and I highly recommend this one if you enjoy Christmas romance. I enjoyed the audiobook narrated by Marni Penning and Noah Cumberland. Having two narrators when a book is told from dual POVs is perfect and this was a great story to listen to.
I received an arc from the author for an honest review. I absolutely loved this book. Without giving to much away. I love absolutely everything by Ms. Liasson. But this one is at the top of my favorites of her’s. I am definitely going to reread again closer to Christmas and release date. I especially loved Brax. Dr. Braxton Hughes. All I will say is who wouldn’t love a guy who loves and is good with kids. (He’s a pediatrician.) And I loved Mia. Also a pediatrician and the entire D’Angelo family. As well as Brax’s sister. His back story made me want to hug him. And the epilogue? Was everything a Happy Ending should be. A wonderful Christmas story to curl up with your favorite hot beverage on a cold day.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Well that’s lame. I think my review disappeared because I remember writing one for this book.
Anyways I really enjoyed this cute Christmas romance! I loved the workplace vibes along with the second chance between these two. I especially liked that the second chance only a six month time frame and it was more because of him not thinking he was good enough for anyone. I loved the fake dating and all the Christmas throughout. I’ve read this author before, so I knew going in what style of writing I was going to read, and it did not disappoint. If you are looking for a fade to black workplace Christmas romance, I highly suggest this one! I seriously didn’t want to put it down!
I received an eARC of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for this ARC.
Sometimes I just want to read a sweet christmas holiday themed novel with a second chance romance amd a little light dusting of angst and drama mixed in. Luckily I found this book and it fits that criteria.
✔️ Second Chance Romance-
The Hero and Heroine dated for a few weeks and just as their romance was heating up, he started to work together in their resident program and he told her it was best if they were just friends. He also had severe commitment issues. ✔️ Workplace Romance-
Drax and Mia are colleagues but were lovers before Drax transfered to her hospital. Mia is still upset about the way things ended and never told her mom they broke up.
✔️ Fake Dating-Mia tells her family that her and Drax are still together ❤️. He goes along with the idea as despite his commitment issues, still wants to make Mia happy.
Mia is going home to rural Wisconsin away from the hustle bustle of her job as a resident in the hospital. Her mother is suck so she told her she was still dating her boyfriend Drax and was bringing him home to the family.
Desperate to find someone to substitute for Drax she is about ask a playboy Doctor when Drax steps in and says he'll come woth her and pretend to be her boyfriend. He's convincing and Mia starts to develop feelings for him all over again.
Mias last relationship ended when her fiancée cheated on her after 6 years together. She's invited to their after wedding party as their family's are close but she really doesn't want to go. Brax helps her to face her fears and is a supporting arm as she closes that chapter in her life.
Will their fake relationship develop into a real one again? Will Drax get over his comment issues?
This was like a Hallmark movie and had all of the holiday feels. Honestly, it could be a Christmas movie. I really like Mia and Brax. Their story was charming. I liked the slight hint at the next book too. Looking forward to reading the next!
Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
Take Me Home For Christmas is my first Christmas book for the year. I loved every page! This book could be a Hallmark movie. A feel-good romance that has a happily ever after, with a sweet dog too. Along with a lot of family and friends. Miranda, thank you for writing feel good books!
If you a looking for a cute, second chance Hallmark style romance, this one definitely fits the criteria. I really enjoyed both characters but just wish the book was a little longer. 3.75 stars
Thank you NetGalley, Hawthorne House Press and Miranda Liasson for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I appreciate that the author has a trigger warning at the beginning of this book as it discusses off page childhood cancer loss and current children cancer patients in treatment.
As a Wisconsin native, I enjoyed this being based in WI and loved the nod to our obsession with cheese.
Brax and Mia dated earlier in the year but broke up because they would be working together. However, Mia couldn’t break it to her mom and instead kept pretending they were still dating. Fast forward to Christmas, when Mia is expected to bring home her boyfriend….only one person can help her out - Brax.
The normal “fake dating” trope is great but I enjoyed seeing the characters each work through some of their own stuff as well (childhood abandonment/feeling not good enough, perfectionism/needing to keep everyone happy, etc) and push each other up open up.
My biggest complaint is the cover - that is a puppy (not a dog that’s been with the family for years) and not even a dachshund!)
Closed door. Fake dating. Only one bed. Second chance.
Hey Hallmark, here is your next sweet Christmas romance with a hefty dose of tears! Seriously, if you love a good tearjerker written to be the Christmas story that you need to kick off your holiday reading with! I personally love a sweet romance any time of year and don't care if it is holiday themed or not, but this one is the perfect book to get you in the mood for the Christmas season. You have wonderfully written characters with flaws that are realistic and humanizes them even more. The setting is in a children's hospital with travel to a small town for a family Christmas. The book is a bit of fake dating, instant attraction, second chances, holiday themed mixed with a hefty dose of family drama and work competition. You will need a big box of tissues to get through the book, but it's the perfect tearjerker to really sink into and let the world fade away. If you are an audiobook lover, this one needs to be on your must-listen list as the dual narration is absolutely outstanding. The narrators bring the characters, their emotions and events even more fully to life to make the book even more engaging! You can't go wrong picking this book whether you go audio, ebook or physical book....just make sure you get the book, so you don't miss out on this fabulous story!
It's simply a perfectly written story that I truly enjoyed.
# contemporary women's fiction
a story that deals with cancer, doctors, children, and so much more. This story will pull at your heartstrings but will also bring laughter and cheer to your heart.
Mia is going home for christmas. But she needs a boyfriend. Even if he's just a fake boyfriend.
I could see this story on hallmark. It's that wonderful of a story. The characters just come alive on the pages. And who doesn't love christmas. It's the best time of the year.
I always love when dogs make their way into books. So I would like to thank the author for adding a dog into this book. It's just perfect.
Thank you Miranda Liasson for giving me the special gift of reading and reviewing an early copy of this beautiful new book of yours Take me home for Christmas. This is a special story of Mia and Brad who work at the same hospital. They were once an item but Brad decided he just couldn’t as they worked together or that’s what he tells her anyway. Mia is searching for a Fake boyfriend to take home for Christmas because her family thinks she is still with Brax. She has hidden the truth as her Mom was going through cancer treatments during the breakup and she didn’t want her to worry. So she kept the story going. Brax finds out from her friend what she is up to. So he approaches her with the idea of him being the one to go home with her. I don’t want to ruin the outcome, so I will just end with don’t miss this beautifully written Christmas story. You will love it as much as I did. Enjoy!!
This was my first book by Miranda Liasson, but it will definitely won't be my last. Take Me Home for Christmas was such a well-written, heartfelt and entertaining story. It is a second chance/ fake dating/ workplace romance full of wit, lovable characters and small town charm. If you love a feel-good romance with a happily ever after- this is the perfect addition to your holiday reading! I couldn't put this one down and highly recommend it.
I listened to the audiobook of Take Me Home for Christmas and the narrators, Marni Penning and Noah Cumberland, were amazing story-tellers.
This is the first book I’ve read by Miranda Liasson and it definitely won’t be the last. Mia and Brax, both pediatric residents, once had a passionate relationship that ended when Brax could not commit. Mia finds herself in need of a fake boyfriend to take home for Christmas, Brax agrees to be that boyfried. This is a very familiar plot and yet in the authors hand it works. Mia and Brax were so likable and the banter believable. I would say the only negative for me was that the book deals with some very heavy subjects so possibly read the included disclaimer before committing to read it.
If you only read one holiday-themed book this year, let it be this one!
This book had everything I have been looking for in a Christmas book this holiday season - a heartwarming family, a picture perfect home for the holidays, great chemistry between the two MCs, and just enough holiday cheer.
Take Me Home for Christmas was my first Miranda Liasson book, but it won't be my last! Thrilled to be getting another book in this series in 2025.
I really enjoyed this second chance holiday romance. Mia and Brax were both somewhat broken in their own ways from their childhoods and they both weren't sure how to really move on and had to work that out on their own to truly be able to be together. This was definitely a more of a hard hitting emotional type of read but was still sweet, cute and somewhat Christmasy especially when they both go back home to Mia's family. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it.
Oh, dear God, how I loved this book! Mia and Braxton are perfect for each other. And right from the beginning you can feel the tension between them. It's like this invisible cord that just seems to pull each other right to them without them even trying.
Mia and Braxton have both had a lot of traumatic experiences happen in their life, though neither one of them knows it. They'd have to let their guards down around each other in order for them to learn that. Mia had told her mom about having a boyfriend and she was supposed to bring him home for Christmas.
Luckily, Braxton ends up understanding the situation and goes with it. He doesn't want anything permanent. And that's all she wants; all she craves but she doesn't want to let him in on how much she wants that. With her mom having gotten cancer, and now free of it, she feels like everything is extra fragile and she just wants to get through the weekend. However, the more time she spends with Brax and around her family, the more he seems to seep deeper into her soul.
Brax, likewise, is having a hard time being around her without thinking things might be different this time. Will it though? Can he get past all the barriers he has set up for himself to protect himself from her? Only time will tell.
This is an absolutely beautiful story. I loved it so much. I cried in several spots. I couldn't help myself. The moments written were just so utterly perfect and beautiful. I loved loved loved this book so much. It put me right into the Christmas spirit and I am already planning on a re-read closer to Christmas time. I cannot recommend this book more.
Thanks to Net Galley, the publishers, and to Miranda Liasson for the ability to read and review this book. All opinions are mine and are completely honest.
This was such a cute romance. I loved the 2 main characters, both doctors, and how their backgrounds impacted their relationship. I loved the fake boyfriend/only one bed tropes, and the Hallmark-esque Christmas traditions. This book will definitely put you in the holiday mood!!
Although we have heard the story of faking a boyfriend for the Holidays before, I am always here for a story told by Miranda Liasson. Like all of her books this one did not disappoint and hit the mark on what I want in a Christmas romance book. The story of Mia and Braxton was sweet, heartwarming and at times laugh out loud funny. You fall in love with the characters as you read this book and wish for them a happy ending. Miranda Liasson never fails to draw me in and make me smile the way she tells her stories. Definitely recommend this one for the upcoming holiday season.
I feel like the cover of this book does not do the book justice, so for this book, don’t look at the cover. Read the synopsis or this review and then go read the book. It is such a cute holiday read. And it is not one that is super sappy and sweet. It has some depth and the characters have realistic baggage. I love the workplace romance trope and the second chance romance trope and the fake romance trope. I am here for all of them!
A wonderful cover and an equally beautiful romance. I loved the writing style and the backstory of Mia and Brax. They are both doctors working with children, and have each suffered loss and heartache in their past.
They briefly dated before becoming coworkers and now they find themselves spending the Christmas holidays with Mia's family as a 'couple' however, as feelings and chemistry was always strong between these too, soon there is no faking anything as they both discover new secrets and open up to one another.
4.5 stars While this story deals with some heavy subject matters, it does so with compassion and a depth hand. Those scenes brought tears to my eyes, but also a comforting warmth and relatability.
Brax and Mia are interesting, relatable, intriguing, complex, wounded, strong, entertaining characters. I enjoyed their romance and the path it took to get to their HEA. These two are so much fun to spend time with. Brax is my new book boyfriend – his flaws and all. The secondary characters – including the dog – added to the fabric of the story and my enjoyment.
If you are currently dealing with grief or the illness of loved one, I would recommend this book with caution – because it may be trigging for you. It’s one to read when you are in that headspace to be able to handle the tough subject matter.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Mia need someone to be her fake boyfriend. Mia asked Brax to go with her. When they got to her parents house she showed him what they did around Christmas time. Mia took him sliding many times down the hill that she used to go sliding when she was a kid.
Braxton was enjoying himself sliding and hanging out with Mia. The dog Cooper wanted Brax to take him out. Everytime he need to go out he would go to Brax to take him out.
What will happen between Mia and Brax? Miranda did a fabulous job writing this story and the characters were a fantastic match. I recommend this story it's a fantastic story.
