Part of a small demon lair in North Las Vegas, tattooist Harper Wallis lives a pretty simple life. That changes overnight when she discovers that her psychic mate, or ‘anchor’, is a guy who’s rumored to be the most powerful demon in existence. Compelling, full of secrets and armed with raw sexuality, Knox Thorne is determined to claim her as his anchor, creating a psychic bond that will prevent their inner demons from ever turning rogue. The billionaire also wants Harper in his bed. She’s not so sure she wants either of those things. No one seems to know what breed of demon Knox is, only that he’s more dangerous than anything she’s ever before encountered. But he refuses to walk away. And when an unknown danger starts closing in on Harper, it seems that Knox is the only one who can keep her safe.

As Prime of his Las Vegas lair and a successful businessman, Knox Thorne is used to being in control. He’s also used to people fearing and obeying him. Harper does neither, which unexpectedly amuses him. Unpredictable, elusive, and complex, she draws Knox and his inner demon like nothing ever has. Knox is used to getting what he wants, and he wants Harper. He’ll have her, and he’ll keep her safe from the threat that looms over her. Because Knox protects what’s his. He won’t allow anyone to take her from him. Even if it will mean letting the demon inside him rise and wreak the havoc it was created to make.

***One of my TOP FAVORITE books/series of all time***

All the PNR OTT Alpha stars. ALL of them.

As usual, applause to Ms. Wright.

I ADORED this thing. Knox is officially my number one book boyfriend of all time. I just love everything about him. I love that he is basically the most powerful dude on Earth. That he and Harper are fated anchors.

Every.
Single.
Thing.

I pimp and rec this book to everyone and everyone and am truly Wright's number one fan.

I need a minute to catch my breath.. Possibly more because I wanna go back and re-read the whole thing. My need for a good PNR without wanting to punch half the characters in it has been satisfied. Nothing absolutely nothing in this book made me wanna smash my tablet. I love it when that happens. No eyerolls, no head shaking just sincere enjoyment.

Knox Thorne...
description

Lord have mercy because this uber alpha demon certainly doesn't.

description

Knox Thorne is powerful, domineering and calculating. No one knows what he is but everyone is afraid of him and his immense powers. He recognizes Harper as his anchor and sets out to conquer her. There are explanations about the soul duality of demons,Suzanne Wright explains far better that I ever could, which clarify certain behavioural aspects of Knox as well as the rest of the demons in the book.

description

Harper Wallis has not had it easy in life. Her mother full of hate for her father abandoned her at her grandmothers doorstep. When she turns four her grandmother makes her party-going, nomad father take charge of her raising . He goes about it in his own weird way. Constantly moving around everywhere with nothing stable in life Harper grows up independent, self reliant and avoids relationships with other demons other than her family and girlfriends. Harper was defiant and fought Knox at every turn. She didn't just roll over at first sight. The chemistry between them was off the charts and the sexy times were super hot with a bit of supernatural spice.

We have a seamless dual POV which was in my opinion cleverly written. Knoxs and Harpers POVs blend together within the chapters and not once did I wonder whose is whose. We get introduced to the demon world and I loved all the different breeds and explanations. It was intriguing and I'm sort of guessing who the next couple is and though I don't know if Suzanne Wright can top the alpha that is Knox, I'm certainly gonna read the next one.

**I was writing this as my two year old clumbered all over me so I'm probably gonna edit it heavily later..

I still need Suzanne Wright to give me more...

No change in my rating as I really loved this story and enjoyed the audio experience as well. I admit the audio wasn't perfect but the storyline made up for any deficiencies. It could just be me, but I found the narrators voices a bit annoying. Harper sounds like a whiny kid and Knox's sexy voice was more porn star than sexy.

It was great to visit the Dark in You world again and I will definitely be revisiting again soon.

**********

Burn left me on a - New Series That Rocks - high...

Hi, my name is Stacey, also known as Sassy and I'm addicted to reading romance. It's been 2 minutes since my last fix and I need Suzanne Wright to give me more....

Wow, Burn just ticked all the boxes on my checklist for favourite paranormal reads. Knox, our hero is a bossy, alpha male who is sexy and takes control of everything in and out of the bedroom. He is the Prime/leader of a demon lair, but he is a bit of an enigma because no one knows what type of demon he is. Harper is a self-reliant and loyal demon who has had an unconventional upbringing. Knox and Harper meet and realise they are each other's psychic anchor. This is a connection that surprises both of them and to some degrees they fight it, especially Harper.

I loved the main characters, but the supporting characters were some of the best I've read in a while. Harper's grandmother, Jolene, is a crack up. She's the Prime of an imp lair and her way of management is to bulldoze over opposition. Jolene is very cunning and the stories, especially the one involving, Lou aka Lucifer and his OCD, had me cacking myself laughing. The Sentinels who serve Knox are strong, loyal and protective of their Prime and anyone attached to him. Harper's workmates at the tattoo parlour are her best friends and also members of her lair. There are the usual baddies including power hungry Primes, an ex-girlfriend not wanting to let him go and an ex-boyfriend, but he was more of a hindrance than a baddie.

I did not want to stop reading at anytime and was getting cranky when life intruded on my happy buzz. Lots of really, really good sexy times for Knox and Harper, with a strong connection between them that forms effortlessly. It wasn't insta-love because neither of them wanted or expected it to happen. It takes both of them a little time to adjust to the feelings that grow between them. Most of the angst and drama is external to their relationship which is a huge plus for me.

I started Burn a little hesitantly as I wasn't sure how I would feel about demons and all of their quirks. Once I started though, I devoured it. I loved the world building and explanations of the different types of demons and the politics involved with running the different lairs.

This is my favourite Suzanne Wright story so far. I've enjoyed her previous work, but this one just left me buzzing. It was sexy, intriguing, funny and heart pumping...exactly what I want in a paranormal romance.

➦Ok, ok, I LIKED it. I just found that may be this whole mate trope is not really my thing... I haven't really read a lot of PNR so I'm still trying to explore and see what floats my boat :D

➦So there's this she-demon. She's all like, badass. Has a kick-ass ability to enchant shit with fire or something. Forgive me, it's a little hazy in my mind right now. This book was three books ago for me. Plus, this was me listening to this while on a bus to NYC:

I'm the one in the middle.
jk.

➦Anyways, there's this demon who's the baddest badass of all the badass demons. You get the point. And he sees the she-demon and he's all like

➦And she's all like

➦But he's like: "YOU'RE MY ANCHOR!"

➦And she's like

➦But. Check this. He doesn't give up. NO. A little bit of this

a little bit of that
description

➦Aaaaaand. Still a no. So what do you do when the girl you want doesn't budge? Easy:

BRING OUT THOSE PSYCHIC FINGERS.

➦So, ladies, please

➦Actually, never mind. Did you not hear me say they are PSYCHIC fingers?

➦So, will he be able to convince her to be his? How do psychic limbs work? What do they feel like? Yes, yes, all important questions. Read the book lol :D

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Wasn't the right time to re-read*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱
This review is purely for me and might contain spoilers and it does contain facts from the book to keep myself in the known at all time. It's also very long and somewhat detailed.

Third re-read: 25.06.2018
I'm sorry to say that I wasn't enjoying this book as much as I should've and this annoys the shit out of me. I mean, it's supposed to be one of my favorite book of all time, and yet, I barely got through and I kept holding putting it on hold; taking breaks all the time. Don't get me wrong, I still love the most powerful demon in existence, Knox Thorne and I do still adore tattooist Harper Wallis. I do. Well it is safe to say that I found nothing wrong Knox, he still holds my heart, but I found myself all ‘meh’ about Harper. This saddens me a whole lot. I feel like I'm ripping old pieces of me. It's like I'm not liking anything anymore. I'm starting to feel... numb. This scares me, because I'm struggling with finding books to read, books to like, and I keep re-reading and I barely get through them :O I seriously need to get out of this numbness. Seriously. PS: Harper has been taken away from my ‘favorite female character’ shelf, and book has been taken away from my ‘favorite’ shelf :(
“You could never desire a man you could control.”
“Is that a fact?”
“It is. You’re a very strong personality, Harper. You would only be attracted to someone who’s either stronger or equally strong.”
It pissed her off that he’d read her so easily. “And you think you’re stronger, don’t you?”
“What I think is that when I’m deep inside you, neither of us will care.”
Harper shook her head. “It won’t happen.”
His eyes bled to black as his demon pushed for supremacy. “It will, little sphinx.” The voice was toneless, flat. “I promise you that.”

About Harper Wallis:
Harper doesn't have wings; a sphinx without wings, though she does have the marks that looks like tattoos of wings on her back. They should become real wings at her command. But they’d never come. She can’t throw orbs of hellfire either. However Harper could infuse hellfire into any object, making them instantly deadly. A blade. A pen. A hairclip. Anything. Her touch can cause soul-deep pain. A rare ability. In many ways, it makes her stronger than demons who can throw hellfire orbs. She can make anything into a weapon. Jolene, her grandmother, had ensured that Harper was just as ‘multi-talented’ as every other Wallis, despite that Harper wasn’t an imp. There were no hybrids in the demon world. If two different breeds procreated, the child would be one or the other. Harper was the same breed as her absent mother.
“But we will talk about it soon, Harper. I’m not going to walk away from you. And I think you’re coming to believe that now.” Satisfaction slid down his spine when she nodded in admission. “Good. Now relax and spread your legs. I want in you again.”
Like she’d argue with that.

Harper's first mentioning of Knox:
‘And who was Knox? Well, Knox Thorne was not only the creator of the Underground, but a demon whose lair spanned most of Nevada and even much of California. The Prime was a ruthless billionaire who owned a chain of hotels, restaurants, security firms, bars, and casinos. That was what demons did: they hid in plain sight, mingled in with unsuspecting humans; often in positions that provided them with power, control, respect, and challenges. Many were entrepreneurs, politicians, stock brokers, CEOs, bankers, lawyers, police officers, journalists, chefs, surgeons, and people in the media. Harper herself co-owned a tattoo studio that had many oblivious human customers.
Knox blended in with humans so easily that she doubted even other preternatural species would suspect him of being anything other than human. However, there wasn’t a demon in the world who hadn’t heard of Knox Thorne, since he was rumored to be the most powerful demon in existence – something apparently he’d never denied or confirmed.
There were many other rumors about Knox: that he was dangerous, calculated, notoriously sexual, and someone who lived by his own rules on his own schedule. It was also believed that he had the ability to call on and control the flames of hell, which was extremely rare. It was also scary, because nothing was impervious to the flames of hell.’

“I don’t believe I asked for a glass of your unimportant opinion.”

The Truth Of Knox Thorne:
“What bothers me is that health professionals give fancy names to conditions or learning difficulties that will irritate the patients; like OCD not being in alphabetical order, putting an ‘S’ in ‘lisp,’ and making dyslexia a word that no one can spell. It’s just mean.”

Demons:
— Demons were predominantly psychic creatures. They didn’t have soul mates, but they came in pairs. That meant they each had a predestined psychic mate, or ‘anchor’, who made them stronger and gave them the stability that prevented them from turning rogue.
— By fusing their psyches, a powerful, unbreakable link formed between the demons. It wasn’t sexual or emotional, it existed on a psychic level. Demons were very protective of their anchors.
— Demons didn’t have a global leader, they simply existed in lairs which were ruled by a Prime. The lairs weren’t organized into any kind of hierarchical structure. Demons only answered to their Primes. Isla Ross, however, had suggested electing one of the Primes – more specifically, her – to rule above all the lairs of the U.S. For a long time, no one had listened to her. But now some demons were supporting her idea, and she’d found a true voice.
— Like a bird, sphinxes were winged, swift, graceful, and could be challenging to pin down. Like a lion, they were strong, fierce, brave, and would single-mindedly trail, stalk, and run down their prey. In short, there wasn’t a more elusive, daring, persistent demon than a sphinx.
“I just think that if someone has a problem with me, well it’s their problem to deal with. Why should I feel bad about it? I’m not responsible for what other people do or don’t feel.”

Other characters:
I've put these in a spoilers tag simply because it's a long list; contains spoilers
Harper was also a person who preferred to avoid complications. Like parking tickets, speed restrictions, and red lights – which was why she no longer had a driver’s license.

God, I cannot get enough of this book! Seriously! L O V E it! Want to read it again already. I cannot wait for book #2!! Same rating as the first.
How can you still be hard?”
Knox ever so slowly withdrew, causing her pussy to close around his cock and try to suck him back in. “Don’t worry, baby, I’m not done yet.” He drove deep with a grunt. “This time, scream my name for me.”

I just love this book! I cannot get enough of Knox! He is...AMAZING! I still cannot believe that I just read it a couple of months ago...but it is still one of my favorite books so far! I just know that I'll re-read it yet again soon. I mean hello, it's Knox! Same rating as the first.
“No one can be firmly marked anything, baby. No one’s all good, and no one’s all bad.”

First read review: 10.07.2015
"You’re a very strong personality, Harper. You would only be attracted to someone who’s either stronger or equally strong.” It pissed her off that he’d read her so easily.
“And you think you’re stronger, don’t you?”
“What I think is that when I’m deep inside you, neither of us will care.”

Fucking amazing! Suzanne Wright knows how to write a story, that's for sure. She's brilliant! I love this book, the story, the characters..EVERYTHING! Suzanne has written one of my favorite books ever, Feral Sins (I didn't like #2 in the series though, so I stopped there, though I'm still waiting for more of Trey!) and Deep In Your Veins series is awesome! (though only Sam and Jared's story.. I haven't read the others and I won't either.) So I must admit that I was a little skeptical to read 'Burn' because how can that one be better than what she already had written so far? Well boy was I wrong! And fuck if I ain't glad for that!

“I don’t believe I asked for a glass of your unimportant opinion.”

Though 'Burn' still doesn't beat 'Feral Sins' is was pretty close.. I adore the world, which is the same world as Deep In Your Veins. I cannot remember meeting any of the characters from 'Burn' in 'DIYV' but it's supposed to have some crossover characters.. Perhaps some re-reading is due? :P
“I just think that if someone has a problem with me, well it’s their problem to deal with. Why should I feel bad about it? I’m not responsible for what other people do or don’t feel.”

The story was pretty fucking awesome! If you know me then you know I'm a sucker for bad-boys, alpha males who's dominating and fucking powerful, and shit Knox Thorne did not disappoint! He's what I would call anti-hero. He's badass, manipulating, powerful, bastard, rich, dominating, alpha male, super possessive, makes your pants socking wet and fucking horny.
“Scare you?” (....) “Baby, I’d never do that. But you have to understand that the answers you want to the many questions in your pretty little head will very often not be what you want to hear. They might shock you, they might disgust you, and they might even frighten you. I don’t want to scare you, but I won’t lie to you. Don’t ask for the truth unless you can deal with it.”

I have to admit that he is now one of my favorite alpha males. He's right up there with Ryder from 'The Fae Chronicles', Trey from 'Feral Sins', Ethan from 'Chicagoland Vampires', Curran from 'Kate Daniels', Travis from 'Beautiful', Liam from Ruthless People, Braxton from Supernatural Prison... I must say, I think he even comes on third place after Ryder (#1) and Trey (#2).. And that is saying something!

“Have you told her what you are yet?”
“Not yet.” His hesitation was clear in his tone.
“Harper doesn’t scare easily.”
“No, she doesn’t. But my kind aren’t supposed to walk the Earth. You know what they say – what’s born in hell should stay in hell.” Contrary to what humans believed, there were much worse things in hell than Lucifer.

Yes, there is no denying that Knox reminds me of Ryder and Trey. He's like their kid or something xp He's alike Ryder with being something mysterious, way too powerful, with the ability to kill pretty much anyone and everything. AND he has the ability to seduce without touching just like Ryder (though not perfectly the same) and they both are incredibly possessive and protective. With Trey is the feral streak they both have, again with being powerful, alpha male. They all have in common where feelings are concerned.. And I didn't mind at all! For one guy to have ALL that I love in two of my favorite characters are just PERFECT!
“I miss you, all right.”
“You should. I’m fucking awesome.”

Now to Harper Wallis.. I L O V E her! She too reminds me of characters from TFC and FS. She's so much alike Syn and Taryn with the attitude, being strong and independent, sarcastic and sassy, loyal and incredible. Harper and Knox together is incredible. They are perfect for each other. I'm must say I'm jealous of Harper.. I really want Knox, but if I can't have him, Harper is acceptable ;)) hehe

You’reamotherfuckingcocksuckingpsychopathicsonofabitch!

Lol you could say 'Burn' is: The Fae Chronicles meets Feral Sins, which of course for me it means amazing, brilliant, perfection and just my type! I'm a 100% sure that I will re-read this in the future many times. Hell, I even want to re-read it now and I just finished the book! I seriously hope that we will get more of Harper and Knox, and not just one book like we did Trey and Taryn.. We better get more of them both :P!
“Why are you still smiling? You’re supposed to fear my mighty wrath.”
His shoulders shook with silent laughter. “In case you can’t tell, I’m petrified.”
“You will be if my mighty wrath is ever unleashed. Stop laughing!”

The only thing I wish we got more of was more action. I wish more would happen, though I'm hoping that there will be a book two where we get even more, and that we get and that we didn't get to know how old they were... Other than that, the book was perfect and is one of my favorites! Thank you SO SO much, Hana for recommending this one to me! I'm sure I would have found it sooner or later but, you recommending it to me meant I found it earlier :D
And I just found out that Knox and Harper will be getting another book!! YAY!!!
"Harper & Knox will get another book, their story isn't finished yet." - Suzanne Wright
Recommended to everyone who loves a dominating male, a sassy heroine and sexy hot scenes ;)) Specially to fans of The Fae Chronicles, Feral Sins...ect.

I need to stop reading paranormal romance. I try and I try and the best I can hope for is 3 stars.
Burn could’ve been one of the better ones if not for issues I will discuss later.

Burn is about Harper, a she-demon from a small mischievous lair, and Knox, a powerful demon Prime who rules Las Vegas. Turns out they are both anchors –a necessary bond between demons to stabilize their inner demons.

I found the anchors idea rather refreshing from the usual soulmates. You see anchors are not lovers, they’re just someone who always have your back. They make you stronger. Still, they probably won’t become lovers. Might have a fling for a while but after on move on. And you know what? I really liked this concept.

I also liked the secondary characters, they were interesting enough, the friends were also loyal and lovable. I found Lucifer’s portrayal very fun and intriguing. The story overall was okay. I also liked her lair and Jolene. The main characters were good enough too BUT. But this means at least a 3 stars rating, so why not?

My main problem was how the story was told. It was told using the third person with the narrator kind of being omnipresent regarding Knox and Harper, their thoughts intertwined (it was clear to whom they belong but they weren’t separate by chap/parag). I don’t like this style, especially not in romance. I found Harper to be meh even though she was supposed to all badass and independent. I believe if the book was told from the first pov or at least with separate sections to each character, it would’ve secured at least 3 stars from me.

I also think if the romance didn’t develop so fast, I would’ve considered continuing this series but sadly, I didn’t feel the “burning sexual tension” which is something I dig. Sure there was chemistry but they got together too fast to my liking. Maybe I wouldn’t have minded if it wasn’t for the pov, meaning we know what they’re both thinking at the same time which deprives me of the thrill of the good romance scenes.

Shortly said, the book would’ve been much better if the author adopted a different perspective in her writing. I liked many aspects of the book but the main character, Harper, didn’t pull me to her and I felt detached from the story. If you don't mind this narrative style and like paranormal romance then you'll probably enjoy this one too.

Title: Burn
Series: Dark In You #1
Author: Suzanne Wright
Release Date: July, 2015
Rating: 4 stars
Cliffhanger:. No
HEA:

"You’re a quirky, complex, fierce blaze of fire in my otherwise numb, predictable world."

If you just like me like to indulge from time to time in some sexy paranormal romance book, in order to escape the monotony of contemporary stories, because let’s face it – after reading hundreds of the same plotlines we can get bored, Burn by Suzanne Wright is quite a good choice. I was enjoying myself through all of it and it definitely quenched my need for some PNR lovin’.

The Dark in You Series tells a story of demons. They are fantasy creatures with superpowers and abilities, and the book is full of different breeds of them. Each one of course is unique and fascinating in its own way and I was thrilled to learn more about them. The thing I liked is that every demon/person has two souls – a human one and the demon’s soul; they seek an Anchor – other demon who is a part of them and gives them strength and stability.

Harper and Knox are anchors :)

The plot of Burn is very interesting and fast paced, there are few twists and turns that I hadn’t expected and the romance between main characters - scorching. Knox and Harper have blazing chemistry. You will love their dynamics if you enjoy a bossy/demanding Alpha vs. feisty/sassy heroine type of relationship and some really well written panty melting sex scenes.

Overall, Suzanne Wright’s done a nice job, if you have read her other paranormal books and liked them, you will definitely relish Burn. It’s written in the same style as The Phoenix Pack, however the author managed to avoid copying it, and created completely new sinfully sexy series which I’m definitely going to follow.

A demon world part of the human world. Demons live, breathe, feed among humans.
Oh, and they also have conferences from time to time :)

Something was bothering me since I started reading the book and I could not figure out what was exactly until the last part of the book. Only then I realized what was troubling me in this story.

THE DEMONS ARE JUST FAR TOO NICE AND NORMAL

And this is exactly what I mean. Let me tell you a few examples.

Point 1: Demons believe in family and family values:
Nobody understands how Harper’s mama could abandon her when she was a little child at her grandmother’s doorstep. All demons hate her for this. Grandmother Jolene, on the other hand, sent little Harper to live with her playboy dad Lucian to develop their relationship.

Point 2: Demons like violence but mostly for revenge and as an extreme measure:
Little Knox killed to revenge his family, although until then he was patiently suffering the torture of his evil Prime. Grown up Knox wants Kendra dead, Harper begs him not to kill her and he lets her go.

Point 3: Demons are not volatile:
Knox doesn’t kill when he wants to kill, because either he is asked not to or because he wants to teach lessons or because he wants to send messages. You may say he is smart for not killing and I will agree with you.

Point 4: Demons are loyal and they care:
Knox cares for his lair. His sentinels care for him. Families care for each other. Friends stick together. Happiness and rainbows all over the place.

Point 5: Demons talk too much about their feelings:
Harper and her family keep talking about why her mother didn’t want her, why her father behaves like that, who wants to kill her and for what reasons (maybe they don’t like her?)

Point 6: Demons like to socialize:
Yes, they have conferences in the book and conference dinners where everybody is dressing nicely. And they believe in democracy and the voting system. Also they like having coffee and chatting.

Point 7: Demons are too much into vanilla sex:
Isla has a thing for sexual sadism, i.e. she likes to tie up unwilling women and punish them for imaginary crimes and then maybe she kills them. And when the main characters find out about it they are shocked. They even try to justify her actions by thinking whether her mother was abusive or something (Point 5). Harper was feeling sick thinking about it.
I know you will tell me that the book is very smutty. And there are these psychic fingers which I have to admit are very convenient during sex, but everything else is normal (even fingering your girlfriend when the others don’t know about it or having sex with her in the elevator etc.)

You may ask me why all these things are not normal for demons. Well, maybe because THEY ARE DEMONS. They are supposed to be volatile, to crave for violence with no particular reason just for the fun of it, become lost in their lust and in their need for power, be loners. Demons may develop feelings and ethics, but they struggle a lot to avoid them. They continually battle with themselves when they fall in love to prevent it from happening – not embracing it straight away.
And these are things I have learned so far from most of the PNR books which include demon characters. As a result I prefer my demons a bit more at the wild side, more funny or if not funny at least more tortured. I want them more wicked and kinky. They are demons after all. Not politicians, not psychologists.

Well, the book is at the light side of the demon world. I will definitely read second book because I think this world has potentials.

My rating would have been 3 stars. But I really enjoyed the last part of the book, after we learn what kind of demon Knox is, we have the results of the voting and shit hit the fan. Knox after this point at least manages to overcome Point 2 and Point 3 of my previous arguments. Well done Knox!

Harper Wallis: Born into a family of imps but with the magical power of a sphinx. She's unusual but there ARE other sphinxs out there...NO special snowflake nonsense here folks!
“If you want ‘nice’, you came to the wrong fucking person. I’m a fully qualified bitch who’ll happily rip you another ass hole if you don’t get the fuck out of my office.”

When we first meet Harper, she is about to have a showdown with another demon in a demon-boxing match! We instantly get a feel that she is independent, powerful, and can handle herself.
I was so excited, I thought we were gonna see some couples fighting each other, and fighting together--the whole enchilada!
“She struggled to her feet, her head still throbbing with pain. “Motherfucking motherfuckers need to motherfucking die.”

But.... after the first fight scene....in the first five pages...she doesn't...fight...again....

She uses her powers a couple time but the bad-ass vibe we got in the beginning doesn't stick around *frowny face*

This was a classic mistake of "telling, not showing"

After that first fight scene, we just hear over and over again until the author finally beats it into our head that Yes OKAY we get IT! Harper IS POWERFUL but CHOOSES NOT TO FIGHT bc SHE don't even have to! fine!
description

Which is where we meet Knox

Knox: powerful, domineering, calculatoring. He is use to getting what he wants while Harper is use to not following ANYONE's order *
“How can you be smug? YOU’RE TIED TO A TABLE LIKE A DAMN SACRIFICE!'
'I don’t appreciate your tone.' He replied ”

description

So while Harper was disappointing in the actual fighting, she was pretty amazing in the personal strength-stick up for yourself stuff

And the banter between them was pretty damn funny *brownie points*

This book is focused on the worldbuilding of demons with the many types, how they organize, etc. Demons have an inner dark energy that emotions can cause to run rampant, which is why they need an anchor

Finally a book with demons and its TOTALLY different from mates! An anchor DOESNT have to be the love of their life but more of a guide to work together!

description

Of course that didn't last long and soon it was both anchor AND mate...this kinda ruined it for me I wanted the grow on each other, not the destined to fuck each other vibe ya know?

description

In general for this world, it kinda bugged me that DEMONS ARE TOO FUCKING NICE AND NORMAL

I mean they had super high family values, enjoyed violence but only for revenge, stupidly loyal, so much feelings, and very vanilla sex *it was hot but vanilla as fuuuck*

I'm not saying this is a bad thing but I prefer my demons a bit more on the wild sad, more funny, and if not funny then tortured. I want wicked and kinky...not politicans and freaking psychologists I AM NOT even kiddingg, thats straight from the book.

descriptiondescription

Now my favorite parts:
The imps! A whole family of crazy supportive imps that run around with Harper all trying to get the most out of this weird thing called life
“Do not try to wrap yourself in toilet paper so you look like a mummy.”
“Why would I do that?”
“I don’t know, I asked you that last time you did it, and you didn’t know then either.”

Without the imps, this book would've been extremely flat on world-building. They added a whole other dynamic and that grandmother was just fucking hilarious!
“There was a heavy, frustrated sigh. “I teach you to lie, steal, extort, embezzle, commit identify theft, and hack into bank accounts. And what do you do? Get a job.”

And now my true favorite thing: We got to meet the Devil!
“Um, Knox. I kind of just knocked the Devil unconscious.”
Knox’s head snapped up from the fax he was reading to stare at Harper. “Repeat that.”
“Knox strode out of his office and into the living area with his mate in tow. And there was Lucifer himself, sprawled on the floor”

description

Think of him as a psychopathic child with bipolar and OCD! Oh and he has a motherfucking shrink
"Apparently, I have some repressed anger and unresolved abandonment issues after my experiences with God.”

Overal this was a pretty entertaining book and honestly just the idea of different demons living in lair/groups was fantastic. So while I didn't love it, I definitely enjoyed the shit out of it.

My fourth re-read: 24. 8. 2016

description

Are you insane?! This story is so fucking incredible and awesome! Thank you Suzanne Wright for writing such an amazing plot and characters! THANK YOU!!! I've been waiting for Knox's story for so long and now it's finally here! This authors books seem to only get better and I am really pleased that this is not the end for the demons since more books seem to follow. HELL YES!!!

description

Knox is simply perfect! He's my ultimate book boyfriend by being bossy, attentive, protective, OTT and just a bad ass! Love how he never gives up on getting his anchor . I really enjoyed their relationship from the beggining till the end. The only thing that would make him even more perfect is, if he were real and mine, but hey, I can always continue living in my delision, that's what books are for, right? ;)

description

Harper on the other hand makes Knox run for his money, she's sassy, strong-willed, loyal and a worthy fit for Knox. They make a perfect fit for each other. Also, their chemistry is off the charts and once they give in, well, let's just say it was explosive and hot, hot, hot!!! I couldn't get enought of these two and their friends. Also to clarify some things:

I can't wait to read the next story, wonder whose it's gonna be. :D
Burn is a must read!!!

I just need a little Knox

Re-read yet again 24th-26th January 2020.

My yearly Knox fix.

Re-read again 8th - 9th February 2019

I love this book.

Re-read yet again 28th - 29th October 2018

Re-read again 6th July - 8th July 2018

Re-read 15th April - 16th April 2018

I’m actualy increasing my rating, I should have given 5* when I originally read this and after the re-read I’m correcting that mistake.

Original review
4.5*

This has been on my to-read list for 2 years and I really meant to read it before now but after coming across Knox Thorne in 'Consumed' I knew this had to be my next read.

I'm late to party by about 2 years so I'll keep it brief.

Knox Thorne is an incredibly powerful demon, no one seems to know exactly what kind of demon he is but they all agree he's powerful.
Knox has lived for a long time and during that time he's had a lot of women but once his demon is bored they're gone, his heart has never been engaged but then Harper enters his life.

There's so much here, I was riveted.

I really enjoyed this read and I can't wait to start the next one. I've quickly become addicted to this author, her alpha males, strong independent women, humour and just all round fabulous reads.

'Feral Sins' was supposed to be next but Knox changed all that and this book held me from the first page to the last, it's definitely one I'll re-read.

I loved all the books I've read so far by this author, so this one is no exception. I really liked the demon world she created. I don't want to go too far into it in this review, because it's too much to explain, but I will tell you that she explains it all very well, so for me, the book wasn't confusing at all.

I think of this one as a mix between the Phoenix series and the Deep in your veins series.

You get your kickass demon heroine and a badass broody possessive demon hero.

Of course the steam was very nice.

Even though I really liked this one, I still prefer the Phoenix and Mercury books. I think that's just because I personally liked the shifters better than the demons.

Still, again an awesome 4,5 star read for me !!

I will continue reading books by this author, because I'm always guaranteed a good read :)

1st read review:
This was a highly entertaining book. I like the imagination that went into this story and the mystery of what Knox is throughout almost the whole book. I'm a sucker for the emotionally challenged Heros falling for the unlikely heroines. Knox and Harper are one of my top favorite couples. There is usually an annoying trait from one or the other but I loved both of them. Their characters were mature and I loved how they reacted to every situation they were in. I have no complaints and truly enjoyed this story. I hope the author continues the series to give some of the side characters their own books...hint, hint, Levi.

2nd read review:
This book was just as good as the first time and that’s rare for me to say. Re-reads usually bring out the flaws in books for me, but not this one. This book is still fantastic. If you’re into PNR, it’s a must read! This is one of those books that I’ll continue to go back to because of how much I love this couple.

5 Burning Stars.

When Knox, one of the most powerful demons in the world, meets Harper, a fellow demon and sassy tattoo artist who couldn’t be more different from him, his controlled world suddenly changes. Not only because they find out they are anchors, which means a lot in the demon world, but also because the more time they spend together, the closer they become and the more their feelings grow. But not everyone is happy about their mating and they are decided to bring them down, but Knox will stop at nothing to protect his mate.

Let me tell you one thing about Suzanne Wright: she is the queen of paranormal romance. Even if you’re a fan of the genre or not (it’s not my favorite genre and I still freaking love her books), you still should read her books. She can write about vampires, werewolf and demons and clearly be amazing at anything she chooses. I believe she could write about alien telepathic robots coming from Saturn and still write a freaking amazing series.
This book is no exception, mix a great demon world, full of action and deceit, add a alpha hero and a badass heroine and a lot of steamy and some emotional moments and this is the result you get: another Suzanne Wright brilliant win.

description
Rating: 5 Stars.
Characters Development: First thing you need to know about Suzanne Wright? She always write the most badass heroines. This book is now exception, despite being a little broken, Harper is loyal, brave, sassy and has an attitude that doesn’t bound to no one, not even Knox. Impossible not to love her. And definitely impossible not to love Knox, the extremely alpha, over-protective and possessive, tall, dark and mysterious demon. He definitely went straight to my book-boyfriend list. Amazing supportive characters, I’m hoping we’ll have books on them.

The first book in the series, this remains my favourite and it can be read as a standalone. I love Harper - her snark, spunk, independence and humour, perfect match for the formidable Knox Thorne. Secondary characters of value, who add to the story and make the world we are invited into that much more real and tangiable - I'm looking forward to future books where characters from Burn, like Khloe and Tanner get their own stories.

A book that can be re-read and re-read.

5 flames of hell stars

Knox has the whole mysterious-powerful-feared-possessive-billionaire thing going for him. He is a breed of demon that no one knows, but it seems that his demon is smitten for Harper the Super She-Demon-Slash-Vamp. She is the first to amuse the man and the demon by challenging, ignoring and going head-to-head with every command he issues.

To bad for Harper, there is only one way to keep her alive and that is to claim her "anchor" which is none other than the man and demon himself. She's a simple girl, so getting use to the life he lives, and the company he keeps, proves to be equally entertaining...
“Brace yourself, because I’m going to annoy you, ignore you, and surprise you for as long as we both shall live.” He smiled. “And I’m going to spoil you, fuck you, and – of course – order you around for the rest of our lives.”

This is only the beginning, for the darkness in him doesn't scare her at all, in fact it's one that makes her burn....
“Every time your tongue flicks out to catch that sauce, I remember how it feels to have your tongue lapping at my cock.”

“You should get that put in a Hallmark card or something.”

LOVED everything about BURN... it had all the elements I crave about Fantastical reads; Alpha male, Sassy-strong female, power-play and raw-sexuality. Ms. Wright never ceases to amaze me with the world she builds and the characters she introduces us too, I instantly fall in love. Knox and Harper were both equally intriguing on their own, but together they were unstoppable. I'm such a sucker for a strong alpha male falling to his knees for the a sassy woman, one who could put aside her sass and melt for the right man. While their story continues on, the beginning of their story does come to an end. No major cliff hangers, just enough for you to get excited that there will be more to come. After all a little thrill never hurt anyone.

Burn is the first book in the Dark in You Series. Harper Wallis is a demon tattooist living a simple life in Las Vegas. When Harper meets Knox Thorne her entire world is turned upside down. When Knox, the most powerful demon in existence, recognizes Harper as his anchor he will stop at nothing to get her secured in his life and in his bed. But when the power struggle between the demons around them intensifies, Harper and Knox will have to become an impenetrable force in order to survive!
description
Told in dual POV, Burn is a paranormal romance masterpiece. Knox and Harper are complete opposites and when the banter between the two builds up the intensity magnifies! The world in which they live is magical and full of engrossing characters. The text is full of color as Ms. Wright has created another EPIC love story with complex characters and an expertly created plot. I adore both Knox and Harper. Knox is a true alpha male and paired with the spunky (and unabashed) Harper there is never a dull moment!
“You’re not supposed to smile at me like I’m a little kitten that stupidly thinks it’s a jungle cat.”
Overall, I highly recommend Burn to any and all paranormal romance fans. Harper and Knox are explosive together and this is one firework show you do not want to miss!

Tattooist Harper Wallis has a family she loves, they are not your normal run of the mill family you would expect but she is happy regardless. As a demon you have different classes of, her family is imps they are havoc makers and crazy to boot, however Harper's demon is a bit more unique and although she is not an imp herself she was raised as one.

Knox Thorne is a demon who everyone is afraid of, rumors circulate to what kind he actually is but only a few actually know. When he sees Harper Wallis from afar he is intrigued and caught off guard by the stunning beauty. Ordering a meet, Knox figures he will get the same reaction of a frightened woman but once she relaxes a bit he can get her in his bed. Knox though is very wrong and not only is she straight to the point and feisty, she is his anchor. While Knox never figured on finding one he is pleasantly surprised. He knows that they will have a sexual relationship until his demon becomes bored, but he plans to enjoy the brief intimacy and then protect her as a friend and anchor should. Harper is not leaping at either of his desires and Knox has to go about charming her, Knox finds though Harper is unlike any woman he has ever met and he wants her like none other before. Something is hindering his progress though as it seems that Harper is the focus of revenge against Knox and protecting her is his number one priority.

Loved this story. Completely unique and Knox was a breathtaking hero. Harper is his equal and he tests her like none other. The band of other characters are fascinating, loved Harper's family. I can't wait until the next book very eager to find out what is next.

5th read 20/06/2023, Nothing's changed, nothing's new, bloody brilliant

When I am in a book funk and that doesn't happen all that often I turn to my go to authors. SW is one of those authors she always gets me out of my funk. But even if I'm not in a funk SW is still bloody awesome am I right or am I right?

Enter Ms. Wright and the fabulous world that she has created here, a world full of Demons.

I've always been a fan of paranormal romance. The world created by Ms. Wright is unique, original and very entertaining. The right amount of intrigue is given for your kindle to be stuck to your hand rather than overflow of world building that could lead to overflow and boredom. Burn has this exact balance.

In the world of demons Knox Thorne is the uber demon. He is powerful, not to be crossed but there is still vulnerability which we only see when he is with Harper. He has lived a very long time and has become bored with life that is until he meets the sassy, confident, funny and snarky Harper Wallis. Harper like Knox is a unique Demon as well.

I love their interaction and banter. They are in-depth characters and what I liked the most is that although they are mates they talk about the issues and doubts that they have which is rare. You can't predict what this author can conjure up which for me is also a bonus.

As Tanner & Devon are getting a book I decided to do a reread of all four books here. There are so many possibilities open and I just know that Ms. Wright has the skills to continue creating a fantastic series.

One of my favourite quotes of the book is with Lucifer, I’d love to see a book with him.

This was my first book by the talented Suzanne Wright and it definitely won't be my last.
I loved the idea of inner demons almost like a dual personality.
So here we have Harper and Knox.
Harper is a wingless sphinx but not sure just yet quite what Knox actually is, something very scary I'd imagine if his inner demon and power are anything to go by (Scratch that I now know and all I can say is just yikes)
When they meet its obvious that harper and Knox are anchors which are demons that ground each other.
But not only this, Knox's demon who is usually unaffected and easily bored wants Harper as his mate.
But along with being mates and anchors, there comes a whole world of danger as everyone seems to want a piece of Harper,
Harper was such a likeable character, feisty, independent but also very uncomplicated and unusually accepting, in fact, I think that was my favourite quality about her, her logical head and lack of unnecessary drama.
Knox well he was a major hottie and his inner demon just delicious,
I loved his easy acceptance of his mate and anchor even know it was unexpected.
I also especially appreciated his completely dominant alpha male persona but I also liked that it was tempered with compromise when it needed to be.
The chemistry between Harper and Knox was smoking hot and the pages sizzled with heat.
I really am looking forward to the next instalment in this fantastic series.

it ended being a 4 HELL ON EARTH stars

ok, when I started reading this...it was in a "I-am-not-so-into-it" mode cause it felt like very "insta!"

although I usually don't have anything against "insta" anything, at all...I was kinda doing this
and thinking "well here we go again"....

cause it all sounded oh so familiar...and yet again if you strip the story of all the supernatural and paranormal, you have a tormented secluded and mysterious rich guy who is pursuing a reluctant, sassy and free sprited guuurl who is below his class level....

but then the strangest thing happened and all of a sudden I was IN

I started paying attention to a certain action in the book LOL

and let me tell you just this and that is all I'm gonna say...I ain't tellin shit...hahhaha

although i was having trouble figuring out how that actually works, LOL, to actually try to visualize it...

but then I was hooked by THAT PARTICULAR ACTION and more from this particular demon

just like I had no problems in accepting other developments in the book...

the story sped up in tempo...and it was fast, temptatious and alluring...

and after that, everything just went my way...

except THIS... *sigh* I am a sensual person but most of all a visual one...

after this line started appearing almost constantly in the book

A deathly quiet descended as Knox’s eyes bled to black for a moment.

I could not put this image out of my mind...

and the guy/demon with all his alluring magic and posture and action and sex...

“Only I can give you what you need, Harper.”
He’d put the ache there, and only he could take it away.
“Come to me.”

couldn't have made me come to him...LOL

so, I shrug to dismiss my somewhat childish reaction but just...

all in all, I liked this book...

and this was a BR with my guuurl Shan...:D

I burned out on this. Sadly, this is not a pun attempt. It does well-enough, though Knox tests my alpha tolerance because, frankly, this guy needs to find himself some chill. Are chill enemas a thing? Because I have a candidate for a product test.

Anyway. I was into it because Harper is a bit awesome and I liked her attitude and strength and willingness to do hard things because they need doing. And that includes alphas with control issues (ugh, apparently, today is pun day).

Unfortunately, the romance part of this story resolves at about halfway, at least in all meaningful senses. And I really, truly didn't care at all, even a little bit, about the plot. I made it another quarter before petering out entirely. At this point, it's all sex and plot things with dire magic and demonic demons being demony.

Anyway, it's a solid 2½ stars because Harper. But I can't manage the juice to round up for something I'm dnfing, even though I really want to for some reason. I know, it's weird.

A note about Audiobook: The narrator for this, Cat Doucette, is actively bad. Not that she's a bad narrator. That's not it. But her voices for the main character and her tattoo parlor coworkers make them sound like immature teens and that's just not a good look. Frankly, many of the women come off as whiny idiots and it took some concentration on my part to realize that those parts aren't actually written that way so much as they're interpreted into it. So while Doucette is a talented-enough actor, I really hate the interpretation on the characters of this book. That might or might not originate with her (producers and directors may be at work here), but it is an active disservice for the book.

A note about Steamy: By the time I stopped, I lost count of the explicit sex scenes. So yeah, way past my steam tolerance. Also, it's Dom/Sub, though on the mild side for that sub-flavor. Which felt a bit out of character for Harper, frankly, though I think Wright made it work.

It's been ages since I laughed so hard!

I absolutely loved this one! It was such an unexpected read and it was exactly what I needed right now.

The characters were great and I love Lucifer (yup, the guy form hell), he was so different than any other thing I've read with him as a character. He was a really surprising character and well, though not what I'd have expected, I enjoyed a bit of a different face for him. Different is good, too much normality can hurt (specially in a book).

It was fast paced, the characters were absolutely great and the plot was really engaging. Only thing that really annoys me: it's only the first book of the series and the others aren't out yet! I want more!

Burn was a very entertaining and sexy read. I really loved Knox and Harper together. I will admit that I waited a long time to read this book because I felt this authors females were always the same and they started to bore me. I'm really happy that while Harper had this authors signature sassiness I never compared her to anyone else. Knox was just perfect, he was everything I love to read in my men. He's dangerous, possessive, and insatiable. I also loved his demon and how obsessed he was with Harper. I'm looking forward to more in this series.

not gonna lie, but i kinda started this one by mistake. like i was scrolling through books in my kindle library, and this one accidentally opened, and since i was too bored to go back, i just read the book.

and man, it was the best decision i made. one that did not let me sleep at all last night

plot: Harper co-owns a tattoo parlour whereas Knox is a Prime (he owns his own demon lair) Harper, is a sphinx who is always mistaken to be an imp and she is strong and feisty as fuck, and well, people always underestimate her. Knox on the other hand, is the most powerful demon in existence and everyone fears his wrath. Knox's demon always loses interest in women after a couple of weeks. But when he meets Harper, it's different, bc she's his anchor.

"You can do better. But…it's too late for you. I told you before, you belong to me. I won't let you go."

i loved the relationship between them. Knox didn't just get up one day, see her and say im never gonna lose interest. no, they gradually got there and I loved that. he couldn't experience the feeling of love, but as a reader, i could feel it glowing in everything he did.

"Why are you still smiling? You're supposed to fear my mighty wrath." His shoulders shook with silent laughter. "In case you can't tell, I'm petrified."
"You will be if my mighty wrath is ever unleashed. Stop laughing!"

Knox is controlling and possessive and is unapologetic about it. And Harper, well let's just say she is fast becoming one of my favourite heroines. She was strong, hilarious, stood up for herself and actually had a backbone which btw has become rare in books lately.

"Look, I might biologically be a sphinx, but I'm an imp in every other way that counts. That means I'm unmanageable, stubborn, secretive, I don't like rules, and I make people tired and irritated— and I take pride in it."

all the other characters—jolene, khloë, devon, tanner, larkin, keenan and a few other's that im missing, were just as amazing! they were such good side characters and kept the book interesting.

now, onto my favourite side character— Lou.
Lou, as in, Lucifer. yes, im not kidding. he was— idk i'm speechless. the guy was fucking hilarious and a total idiot in a cute way.

"What bothers me is that health professionals give fancy names to conditions or learning difficulties that will irritate the patients; like OCD not being in alphabetical order, putting an 'S' in 'lisp', and making dyslexia a word that no one can spell. It’s just mean."

see what i mean??? this was so unlike the big bad wolf Lucifer is normally portrayed to be and i loved it!

overall, this is one of the best books i've read this year with its mystery, drama, romance, side characters, plot— everything, and i really hope the other 3 books are just as surprising and amazing!

It was fun for what it was but there are serious issues of consent in this book. In fact I ended up skipping the sex scenes after the first two because they were boring and predictable on top of the consent issues.

The MC, Harper is refreshing and fun and I enjoyed her a lot. Knox is a cookie cutter male romantic lead. Dominating, controlling, jealous, possessive, manipulative and quick to rage. If you’ve read one paranormal romance you’ve likely read him already with a different name. There was nothing special or unique in that aspect.

The action and mystery was well paced but while the speculation about who the bad guy was kept me reading, the actions and thought processes of the big bad were ultimately not explained well, unsatisfactory and it turns out it’s just a mustache-twirling villain who is there to drive the story.

It’s not the worst PNR I’ve read but it’s also far from the best. With nothing memorable to recommend it, I’m reluctant to continue the series.
