Сладострастие бытия

Rate this book

Maurice Druon was born in Paris. He is the nephew of the writer Joseph Kessel, with whom he wrote the Chant des Partisans, which, with music composed by Anna Marly, was used as an anthem by the French Resistance during the Second World War.

In 1948 he received the Prix Goncourt for his novel Les grandes familles. On December 8, 1966, he was elected to the 30th seat of the Académie française, succeeding Georges Duhamel.

While his scholarly writing earned him a seat at the Académie, he is best known for a series of seven historical novels published in the 1950s under the title Les Rois Maudits (The Accursed Kings).

He was Minister of Cultural Affairs in 1973 and 1974 in Pierre Messmer's cabinet, and a deputy of Paris from 1978 to 1981.

It's interesting how we come to a book: Last week I taped and watched a film I'd heard of for years but never seen, A Matter of Time , the last film directed by Vincente Minnelli and the only film he made with his daughter, Liza. The film was taken out of Minnelli's hands by its producers, AIP, and Minnelli disowned the film they released. But I knew that any film directed by Minnelli and featuring, aside from his daughter Liza, the legendary Ingrid Bergman, as well as a brief appearance by Charles Boyer (Bergman's co-star in Gaslight) had to be worth a look. The film that resulted from this collaboration (with a screenplay by John Gay and cinematography by Geoffrey Unsworth) was something of a muddled mess, and a box-office disaster. But it was interesting enough to make me want to read the novel upon which it was based. My public library system had exactly one copy amongst all its branches, as though the book were awaiting my summons.

12/25/10: This was a rather slight novel. The film followed it fairly closely, making a few changes: the character of Marcela becomes Nina in the film, and the visit of the Countess's long-estranged husband takes place later in the novel - during this visit we learn that before the Countess embarked on her career as a courtesan, her name was Laura and she and the count had a son who died at two years of age, after which she left the marriage.

I really don't know if I'd have found this novel as interesting had I not come to it via the film. It's not a book I'd have sought on its own.

Very interesting and saddening at the same time. Druon, describes the fall of an old courtesan. She used to live a life of luxury but has somehow ended up in a hotel, surrounded by all of her worldly possessions. She mistakes her maid for multiple figures from her past and ends up reenacting scenes from her life in an act of senility.

One of those books just waiting to be made into a screenplay with big-name actors - and this was.
Directed by Vincent Minelli, starring Ingrid Bergman and Liza Minelli, it was a FLOP. Ditto for hte book.
