A Thorne for a Crown

Rate this book
The first real case femme fatale turned private eye, Eva Thorne, has had in months may be more than she can handle. King Rutgard has been kidnapped, only he's not entirely alive, which makes finding him difficult. What's more, dwarf men are joining the suffragist movement in droves to win freedom from the matriarchy, and there's a werewolf terrorist in town causing chaos. Eva needs a case like this to make her reputation, but she has problems of her own. Dark magic is rising in her, the Thorne legacy, and she can't control it. She has to find a way or risk imprisonment by the jackbooted elf soldiers who are cracking down on illegal necromancy and worship of the Dead God. Worse, the God of Death wants her soul, as does her twin sister, so Eva denies her magic and hides from her family. But some things are impossible to hide from, like the tax collector … and love.

4 Stars!

My reaction after reading this book:

After reading Ate Claire's (I call her Ate Claire, "ate" as big sister in Filipino) review of this book months ago, I felt so giddy to start it because I found the previous book really enjoyable. (Click her name to read her thoughts! :))

A Thorne for a Crown is the second installment of Eva Thorne series. I expected this book to be a lot more action-packed. I was right. It was filled with particularly exciting action scenes and adventures. What I didn't expect was how it's going to be better than the first book, Tangle of Thornes, when it comes to the storyline and the mc's character development. In this sequel, our heroine Eva Thorne begins her journey as a detective, investigating the reported disappearance of the dwarf king, King Rutgard. She's now smarter, confident, and independent. More developed compared to her character in the previous book.

What made me appreciate this book more was the thrill it gave me when magical creatures such as werewolves, beasts, and even dragons were highlighted apart from dwarfs. The authors sure did an amazing job in engaging me with its mythical characters, dazzling plotline, and lots of humor. In addition, I appreciate Eva's romantic involvement with certain characters. I personally ship Eva and Conrad, by the way. I thought they look cute together and the way they work as a team was remarkable. Can they just end up together, please?

I have to give the authors credits for that cliffhanger in the end. That totally stunned me. This book, as a whole, offered a real surprise to me. It was better than what I've expected. I'm looking forward to reading the third installment. :)

(Thank you to the authors for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!)

I absolutely love this series. In book two Eva is now a true blue detective who is hired to find out what happened to the dwarf king and also comes across some treacherous and heartbreaking truth with her friends. Will Eva be able to solve the case without the help of those she has trusted for so long? Or will she fall for her fate and become one of the family legacy after all? Read it!
I am definitely looking forward to the next book! I love this series and can't put it down. It's definitely a great read a I highly recommend to anyone who loves paranormal and detective wrapped into one. Eva is a great lead character and her group is interesting to follow. I've the trials she goes through.

As you can probably tell from the author’s excellently written blurb, this story is rich in plot and colorful characters, and has no shortage of cheeky humor. It is such a rich world that it took me a good chunk of book one to settle into it and get oriented to everything that was going on. But this time out it was much easier to immerse myself because the overall framework was already established for me. There are quite a lot of standout features in this one, so it’s hard to pick favorites. But I loved that she contrasted three different societies from an anthropological point of view: a matriarchal (female dominated) dwarf society, a society of elves where the power is shared equally between males and females, and a human society where women play second-fiddle. The three societies have much more than that that set them apart, of course, and they share the stage with goblins, magical folks, and a much wider canvas of characters.

The characters in the story, even the bit ones, have a highly picaresque quality that made me think of those Robert Luis Stevenson adventures I loved so when I was younger.

But being inside the heroine’s head, who’s giving you this story from her p.o.v., is perhaps the most enthralling. She’s quite the character. She has a bright and busy mind that takes in everything in a flash and weaves together this complex tapestry of a story before us. I swear you’ll gain at least 10 IQ points just being inside her head. She’s part femme fatale, part investigator, part wiccan, and a quite a center of gravity for the story, helping to propel us forward in a world we ourselves might not survive without her.

I also appreciated that in a world where everything sci-fi and fantasy these days seems so derivative, this author has the courage to have her own voice and be her own storyteller.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review.

This book is the second in a series. My major complaint with the first book was that the heroine was constantly being "managed" by the three men in the novel, and she was practically in love with all of them early on. She was portrayed as a badass, independent woman, but she really wasn't.

Fortunately, she really grows into herself in this book and becomes much more decisive and independent. The "help me I'm so helpless you big strapping man" nonsense was mostly gone. Now she is someone for whom I can root!

The writing is very strong. Everything is described well and vividly, and grammatical/spelling errors are rare. Secondary characters have a bit more feeling to them in this book, as well. Overall, this is a pretty solid addition to the series.

Someone's butt was getting kicked and her throat almost getting swiped, but Eva Thorne wasn't having any of it. This time, she meant business and she was out there to risk her life. Eva's back and she was recently hired by Baroness Syla to investigate the disappearance of Dwarf King Rutgard. That, and the threat caused by suffragists as they awoke corpses and attack the living. It was zombie apocalypse and there was also some werewolves uprising. Chaos everywhere, and Eva, along with the three men clamoring for her attention, were in for the big surprise of their lives.

And hell's upon her, especially now that the God of Death was back to get her soul.

I enjoyed this second book of the Eva Thorne series. I liked the lead female character better than the first time. I liked how she upheld her new reputation as a Private Investigator, and not just some amateurish sleuth. I still have issues about the men (three, to be exact) who seemed to have captivated her heart. I lost myself within the characters completely, as they whisked me away on an unforgettable journey.

Lorel Clayton's writing is beautiful and and enchanting. Can't help but be mesmerized with the world she created. Can't help but sigh until I get the third book in series. Yay!
