With Doflamingo defeated and Dressrosa finally freed from his tyrannical rule, it's time for the Straw Hats to rest and recover. But the peace is soon broken when the Navy surrounds the island. Can Luffy and his crew get off Dressrosa before it's too late?
Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

With the conclusion of this latest Saga, I'm realizing how close I am to being caught up, which is both an exciting prospect because I won't have to worry about spoilers and worrying about one because I'll have to wait to continue with this amazing series.

One Piece never does quite bounce back from epic occasions well. Then again, what series could? Can? Still, we're on course for the greatest treasure...Er, to be King of the Pirates...um, to get the treasure to be king of the pirates or punch everyone who isn't King so that they declare it?
Maybe the World Government will have to call you King so that everyone turns on you. it didn't work in the birdcage...
Serving as the closure for the Dressrosa arc and the start of Zou, there's not much here except for filler, but it nicely gets the crew from Point A to Point B, and sets up well for Sanji's story.
note this is my attempt to finally catch up with One Piece. I last read the Dressrosa arc back when it initially came out, but gave up on my recent reread due to time constraints. Instead, I've decided to pick up where I left off around a decade ago and hope my memory serves me well.
volumes like this are always a lovely read. one arc comes to an end and a new one begins but there's always some chaos and celebration in between, which for me makes the story more enjoyable. who doesn't love to see the main characters (and everyone really) so full of life and happiness after enduring so much pain and despair?
one of the my favorite moments of the dressrosa arc, and probably one of the whole series, is the father and sons' ritual. it's funny to see luffy so against it when he's always asking people to join his crew without hesitation. however, he doesn't wanna be anyone's boss. he wants to be free a live without regrets, and that's exactly what the seven leaders do. they are willing to be his shield and spear simply because they admire him and it's their choice. so, who's gonna stop them? such a cool moment.
once again oda surprises me with his worldbuilding. who would've thought zou island is on top of a giant living elephant that's been alive for a millenium? poor guy must be tired of walking so much lol but anyway, something's going on with sanji and oh boy am i ready to get hurt again :D
So comes to an end, finally, the longest arc in One Piece at the time - the second-longest now and hopefully forever. As always, arc finales and interludes are some of the best parts of the story. Things are going on in the world, others besides the Straw Hats are making messes of their own, new questions are arisen, new bounties, Doflamingo's doomsaying, and Sengoku looks happy for once. I guess the job was just a really stressful one and he's normally not that serious. I enjoyed the chat he had with Law: bit of a depth for both of them, and a rare bit of friendship - family even - between a Marine and a Pirate. Law's backstory was never one of my favourites but this was a nice resolution.
Luffy shows his conviction in several funny ways. Kidnap a princess and pick a fight with an admiral because he can't let anyone live without any regrets and he won't run away anymore. (Damned good fight, too.) But then others force him to run anyway, which is a good thing because I think he'd still have lost. The Admirals continue to be an unknown quantity: even now (at the time of this writing) that Luffy's taken on an Emperor and forced one to go all-out, even with his amazing haki advancements and Devil Fruit awakening, I still don't feel confident that he could handle a Kizaru. I suspect we're about to see, given how things are going, but I digress.
Much more surprising was the scene with the Grand Fleet. At first glance, anyway, thinking back to how eager Luffy is to get new crew members, and how it contrasts with his sudden reluctance to take on a whole armada's worth of the lot. He just doesn't like being told what to do - nor does he like telling others what to do. And in so doing, he is now forced to confront with the dark side of such freedom: others doing whatever the hell they want too, even when it goes against his will. A bitter lesson to swallow. And then, party!
And then a new adventure! Interludes end with a new beginning, and a new first look at another vista of adventure, and an island-sized elephant doesn't disappoint. More clues of the traitor, as well.
After the climatic volume 79, we’re starting to transition away from Dressrosa and moving on to Zou to catch up with the missing Straw Hat members (with a tease that something bad happened to/with Sanji). The wrap up of Dressrosa storylines was more than sufficient. As I was saying in previous volumes, Issho is becoming one of my favorite Navy characters in One Piece and I really appreciate his relationship with Luffy and the respect they give each other. It was surprisingly moving seeing Issho so moved by the love and respect Luffy generates in others and cursing himself for blinding himself. As for the other parts of Dressrosa, I still don’t really care for most of the buildup that went into the various gladiators but it is a neat idea that this all led to the creation of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. And Luffy’s response to that was both predictable, hilarious and a bit moving. His logic for not needing to be a big boss to be King of the Pirates or an ally to all these crews, he just wants everyone to be free really does track. It should be interesting to see if/when this comes back soon.
As for Zou, I knew about Zou itself beforehand but I’ll say it officially, Oda Sensei’s choice to have a giant island with a world on its back gives me major Discworld vibes. The story on the jungle/civilization itself feels a bit disjointed thus far, especially because Oda Sensei is holding back on what happened to Nami, Chopper, etc. and especially Sanji. I suppose that’ll be covered in the next volume.
Other moments of the volume of note: - Rebecca and Kyros reaffirming their father daughter bond was very sweet as was Dressrosa’s citizens faking their anger to Luffy. - Traffy bonding with Sengoku over Corazon’s memory was a nice moment and helped redeem Sengoku a bit. - Oooh CP9 is back! - As with Barmoleo’s Straw Hat fanboying, his Straw Hat themed ship and fanboying crew are a riot.
This volume was ultimately a nice breather after the climax of Dressrosa and while it seems to be disjointed at the start of the new arc I’m sure it’ll come together in the subsequent volumes.
At the end of the Dressrosa arc, Seeing all the bonds Luffy made, and the debut of Straw hats' Grand Fleet was heartwarming. I had much fun reading this arc, so far the best of the New World Saga.

Volume 80: Chapter 796-806 Saga 8: Dressrosa Saga 9: Whole Cake Island Arc 27: Dressrosa Arc 28: Zou
Sengoku, who is now an Inspector General, and Otsuru, who is a Great Advisor come to Dressrosa. Admiral Fujitora didn't capture Straw Hat Pirates based on gamble he made with the dice. After then, he started to deploy the Marine to capture Straw Hat Pirates and other pirates. They managed to escape from Dressrosa.
Ideo, Blue Gilly, Abdullah and Jeet formed an alliance. Cavendish and Suleiman also formed an alliance. They then agreed to form a Straw Hat Grand Fleet consists of 5600 members: - Beautiful Pirates led by Cavendish (75 members) - Barto Club led by Bartolomeo (56 members) - Happosui Navy led by Don Sai (1000 members) - XXX Gym Fighting Alliance led by Ideo (4 members) - Tonta Corps led by Leo (200 members) - Giant Pirate Crew led by Hajrudin (5 members) - Yonta Maria Fleet led by Orlumbus (4300 members)
New bounties were released: - Monkey D. Luffy (500,000,000 Berry) - Trafalgar D. Water Law (500,000,000 Berry) - Roronoa Zoro (320,000,000 Berry) - God Usop (200,000,000 Berry) - Sanji (177,000,000 Berry) - Nico Robin (130,000,000 Berry) - Franky (94,000,000 Berry) - Brook (83,000,000 Berry) - Nami (66,000,000 Berry) - Chopper (100 Berry)
A new Shichibukai, Edward Weevil, a self-proclaim Whitebeard's son and his mother, Miss Buckin, are hunting down of the Whitebeard Pirates' remnants. Jesus Burgess managed to sneak into Baltigo, the Revolutionary Army HQ. He then contact Blackbeard Pirates to attack the base. Buggy now is running Buggy Delivery at Emptee Bluffs Island after Doflamingo's fall.
Straw Hat Pirates arrived at Zou, an island at the back of the giant elephant. Zou is the home for the man-hating tribe, the Minks. Kin'emon and Kanjuro want to find their ninja friend, Raizo. But, Zou was devastated by certain pirate named Jack.
sengouku loved corazon as a son and was devastated when he died. now he knew why corazon died and let law escape.
fujitora and luffy started fighting, but the citizens of dressrosa came running shouting bad things to luffy while smiling. the people of dressrosa already knew about Rebecca and Kyros and their little house which they used to share with scarlet. they also knew about the dwarfs that had been hiding from them.
everyone‘s helping luffy and friends to escape.
I guess I shouldn’t have closed my eyes. I’d love to have been able to see your face.
5600 pirates are joining luffy. luffy doesn’t want them to join him cause “it’s so cramped” and that he just want to be the king of pirates, and not interested in being someone great. HAHAHAH THEY STILL DRANK WITHOUT LUFFY’S APPROVAL.
STRAW HAT GRAND FLEET IS ESTABLISHED!
LOL the barto club ship is called “the going luffy senpai”. everyone got a piece of luffy’s vivire card.
sanji’s wanted poster showed “alive only” while the rest are “dead or alive”
zou is an elephant island that’s about 1000 years old. the mink tribe on it hates humans.
one of the Blackbeard pirates followed and found the revolutionary base.
they made contact with the mink tribe. the place is in ruins and it seems like a fight have broke out recently. Jack destroyed this place and left to rescue doflamingo. for some reason, the mink tribes are celebrating the arrival of the straw hats but only nami and chopper were there.
DRESSROSA ARC - FINAL PART 1. "listen, i just wanna be the king of the pirates, that's all!!! i don't wanna be some kind of big shot!!!"
2. "straw hat luffy, honest to a fault. everybody seems determined to save you! what kind of man are you? what colour's your hair? what shape your eyes? what features do you wear? i reckon it must look mighty kind."
3. "is my hand warm?" - "yes...it's very warm..."
i don't wanna give any more but these quotes.
ZOU ARC - PART 1 1. edward weevil, what the heck kind of goofy ass name is that
2. oh my fucking GOD ELEPHANT ISLAND PLEASE I WANT ON IT
3. buggy's hair post-time skip does not slap the way it did in impel down. when he had his hair in a ponytail, i actually was tucking my hair behind my ears LMFAO
4. just saying but with how thick zoro's neck is, he would absolutely have no trouble pulling 5G and more in a formula 1 car
5. nami looks beautiful in the princess attire and OMG CHOPPER IN THE KINGLY GOWN HAHAHAH SO CUTE MY GOD I MISSED SEEING CHOPPER
“Being King of the Pirates doesn’t mean being big, but free?”
I love how luffy got Rebecca and her dad to be on the same page. They deserve to be a happy family and I did not like the rumor he spread around. I’m glad that Luffy didn’t let that be their ending.
The pirates wanting to be under affiliation of Luffy is huge. This reminds me of how much Luffy and the crew as grown as pirates. I knew Luffy won’t have agreed, but the fact that he got offered is amazing! It’s funny that they still became the fleet. It’s so wild to think how Luffy started out as a kid with a dream and he has build himself up to a legend pirate. I wonder if the fleet will show up in another arc.
The baro club ship was so funny to look at. Not only do they have a giant Luffy, but they also have the head of Going Merry. That’s so cute! The way that they have an all their posters up with their autographs is so wholesome. It’s truly fandom behavior. They are hilarious. You can tell that they are truly fans of the straw heads.
I’m super interested to know more about the minks! Also I want to know what happened to my boy Sanji! Like what’s going on???
Thoughts while reading:
- I feel like the rumor is unnecessary - I love his reactions to the straw hats - Awwww this is such a cute moment - LUFFY ITS NOT TIME TO FIGHT - WAITTT THIS IS CRAZY WHAT A BIG STEP - 5,600?? That’s so crazy - I love how they are building statues LMAOOOO - LMAOOOOOO I LOVE HOW BARTO CLUB SHIP HAS A GIANT LUFFY - LMAOOO not everyone trafficking Luffy - LMAOOO not Franky and usopp fight over posters - LMAOO I love Nami’s posters - That is weird… why only alive? - HAHAHA not luffy calling nami for help - “Wait, God.” “God, oh geez.. it’s so hard getting used to being a 200 million man!” LMAOOOOOO I love this and Franky is killing me - An island on an elephant is so cool - BUGGY? - Robin’s reaction to the drawing is so cute - Where is everyone? - Damnnnn she’s about to take zoro out - OHHH these minks are lowkey cool - Why does she have nami’s clothes - DAMNNN?? What happened to hi? How are you? - It’s fun to see Law’s crew again! - Why is everyone sus about Sanji? - Nami looks so cozy - I love chopper’s coat - WHAT HAPPENED TO SANJI??
I am SO glad that boring and endless Dressrosa arc is finally over and One Piece feels like One Piece again! We finally get news about many characters after the time-skip, and we encounter a new, mysterious island. It really feels like a refreshing new chapter, hopefully it won't be another let-down like all the big adventures so far in the New World.
This was the last chapter in dressrosa arc When i watched the anime it was top 3 arc for me and even after reading its still in the top 3 I thought i would like it less but i did fall in love with it more🙂↔️
A nice wrap up to Dressrosa. There are some interesting shenanigans going on with the baby that are intriguing. We have also arrived at Zou. Which again just shows how well and interesting Oda makes his world building.
I hate oda's zootopia ass city. All the male animals look like the animals, but all the female animals have giant boobs, tiny waists and then like a muzzle. Make the misogyny stop i beg of you
