Return to the Heroes of Evers, Texas with Carter Jenkins as he falls for local veterinarian Lily Winn.
In between covering for the Sheriff while he's off on his honeymoon, investigating an underground dog racing ring, and helping one of the wounded dogs heal, he also has to try to convince Lily he's worth taking a gamble on! Will the sexy new animal doc give him a shot and risk it all?
This short story is a stand alone romance from the Heroes of Evers, TX series that takes place after book three. PLEASE NOTE: this story was published in the anthology collection entitled Red Sole Clues.
Vet Dr. Lily Winn, and local lawman, Deputy Carter Jenkins, stop dog fighting ring. Unexpected involvement from community members Lily thought she could trust. Safety with the lawman she wasn't sure she should put her faith in.
Dog racing not illegal in Texas. Gambling and use of live lure illegal. Shooting the losers leaving mass graves illegal. Horrible, but true to life. Rural area with low budget means crimes against animals are lower priority, and hard to fight.
Lawyer Alton Crawford and son Ryan seem like folks Lily knows and thinks she should be able to trust. But is Ryan the Local Son / Scion of his father's good works, or a representative of a far darker operation?
Jenk Wilson does their redneck grunt work. A slimy creep all around, well painted caricature of greed and unfeeling.
Dr. Lily must learn to trust her heart and her loyal deputy to do what it takes to put the racing ring out of commission, and win her heart. Deputy Carter promises to show up. Show his dedication to her, and things they both believe in.
Sad animal story with some hope for new love, and a changed but vital life for dog survivor Honey and Dr Lily, maybe including a man who's sworn to honor and protect.
I purchased a copy of the short romantic suspense novel Honor and Protect: A Small Town, High Stakes Romance (Heroes of Evers, TX Book 4) Carter and Lily by Lori Ryan and this review was given freely.
Short and fast paced with vivid violence this is the start of an instant attraction romance with a nod to John and Katelyn’s wedding. I enjoyed the support and steadfast care Carter offers Lily but could have done without the vivid violence and would have liked more duration and closure with their romance/personal lives.
Disillusioned after three failed relationships, veterinarian Lily Winn moves to Evers, Texas to take over her grandfather’s practice but finds more excitement than she planned for when she finds herself attracted to the persistent Chief Deputy Sheriff Carter Jenkins and herself the target of an illegal dog racing ring run by a prominent lawyer.
Carter and Lily were both such caring and likeable people. I love dogs and there were some almost teary moments. This was a short story but it has everything ... Suspense, unexpected twists and turns, and some very tense moments and action that had me turning those pages faster and faster..😁..... A sign of an excellent author is when you forget it is a book and get so wrapped up in the story as if it was really happening in front of you!!!! Every book I have read by Lori Ryan has been like that and I am so glad I came across her books while browsing the Kindle store!!! There was a very sweet romance between Carter and Lily and it was nice visiting the town again. I highly recommend this book for a quick read... You will be surprised at how much action is packed into this story that will grip your attention!😇
New in town veterinarian Lily Winn is horrified when she follows a lead and finds a number of mutilated pups and one to rescue. Bringing the issue to acting deputy sheriff Carter Jenkins, Lily’s upset when Carter’s limited in the help he can give but warns Lily to back up for her own safety.
Lily and Carter are interested in each other but Lily’s guarding her fragile heart too closely to admit they’ve reached a point where they’re dating and she cares too much. Meanwhile, Lily, gets a lead on another illegal underground dog racing session and the shrewdly cruel men behind it know Lily’s trying for information to pass onto the authorities. Rating: 4.25stars
This is a short novella length story, but is definitely not lacking in the danger and suspense category. Lily and Carter are fabulous characters and the storyline grabs your attention and holds on tight! I will say though, that this is listed as Book 4, but it is actually Book 3 as it comes before Ashley's story due to events mentioned that have occurred in Book 2. So, the correct reading order (which is listed inside each book by the author is......
Heroes of Evers, TX Series: Love and Protect Promise and Protect Honor and Protect (An Evers, Texas Novella) Serve and Protect Desire and Protect Cherish and Protect Treasure and Protect
2.75 Stars. This is a rather short read starring Lily, the local veterinarian, and acting Sheriff, Carter Jenkins. Since this is like a novella, the reader doesn’t get as much back story in the main couple. In the Book Description it states it takes place after after book 3 in the Series. That can’t be right, as the Sheriff John Davis and Katelyn are referred to as a married couple in Book 3 and yet in this book is their marriage and honeymoon. Confusing? I give the story points for originality, as the backdrop for this book is dog racing and gambling, which is not typically part of a romance storyline. Though as a dog owner, parts of this book are disturbing and hard to read.
Honor and Protect is a cute story with intense scenes and you may cry as well. Animal cruelty is not an easy topic to read about whether its dog racing, fighting or inhuman treatment to animals it always makes me cry and get angry. I am glad Ryan bought this topic to light. Carter is the male lead and he is great, just enough alpha who is sexy and patient. Lily is the leading lady she is a veterinarian who stumbles upon animal cruelty she will become invested in stopping the people behind the abuse. Carter will have to help and possibly save the day. Happy Reading!!
This is a short novella. The characters had immediate chemistry, even though one of them was trying to fight it. There is a twist you didn’t see coming, that will leave you saying, huh.
Lily was poking around, looking for an illegal dog racing ring she had learned about. What was she thinking? No one knew where she was. But she couldn’t turn back now, she had to save the dog that was crying out in pain.
Carter was recently promoted to Chief Deputy Sheriff. He was taking over while John was getting married and then on his honeymoon. When he entered the local veterinarian clinic, he was surprised at the anger directed towards him. WTH had he done?
A very short story that felt rushed. The plot was interesting. I liked the characters. Everything moved so quickly that next thing I knew, it was over.
I was waiting to see what was going to happen with Carter and Lily, and it was the end of the book. No epilogue, no nothing. I was wondering why Lily's last 3 relationships did not work out, but Lily didn't have a clue. Not even a hint.
I would have enjoyed this book more, if there had been more book to enjoy. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book received from the author.
This is a short story that I wish could have been a bit longer. It was full of action and suspense. Lily Winn and Carter Jenkins are good together even if Lily fights her attraction to him in the beginning. She is notified of an underground dog racing ring and soon discovers that she will need Carter's help. Carter is happy to help, but his hands are tied. Lily takes matters into her own hands and it will take Carter to save her.
This was a quick and satisfying read. I look forward to more stories from the tiny town of Evers, Texas.
Quick read from the Heroes of Evers, TX series. Lily Winn maybe gun shy when it comes to love but she's a warrior when it comes to protecting animals. Trying to investigate an illegal dog racing ring by herself is not her smartest move. Carter Jenkins is taken with Lily and wants to try to build a relationship. Understanding it will take time and patience does not deter him. Keeping her safe may take some doing though.
Great story! The author noted this novella was published in an anthology collection. It’s also part of the Heroes of Evers and I loved it. I’ve been reading this series which is excellent and will begin Book 5 next. This story makes you smile as veterinarian Lily Winn works to save a wounded dog; investigations ensue on underground dog racing; and, along the way Deputy Sheriff Carter Jenkins fall in love. All these events happen in a short story which was excellent and can be read by anyone.
Love this series. Each book is a standalone but it’s much better to read them in order. With each book the characters intertwine and you get a much better experience that way. What can I say. Carter and Lily are a great pairing. Even tho it’s a novella it’s a great read and full of the usual drama and intrigue. Highly recommend this book and series
The story was good but a little rushed. My biggest issue is there were so many editing mistakes in this very short novella. Every page had at least one, one page had errors in every paragraph. Hopefully this isn't a sign of things to come from the author, I have enjoyed her books and can handle a few mistakes but this was too many.
As an animal lover I really hate to see animals mistreated in any way, whether it be dog fighting, puppy mills or anything else. This was excellently written with characters that are realistic and very memorable. It's also clean so everyone can enjoy. There's action from cover to cover which makes for an exciting and fast read. Loved it!
Wow! There's a lot of enjoyable, exciting reading in these few pages! I love Carter and Lily is just right as she is brave enough to seek ways to end illegal dog racing but smart enough to pull back before she thinks shes done something stupid. The ending absolutely scared me to death, though, so read with caution! Great visit to Evers!
I liked this story a lot. Lily and Carter, The veterinarian and the acting local sheriff. This was one quick, short read. The main characters are wonderful. They had hot chemistry between them. The plot and storyline are great too. It has drama and suspense. Read it for yourself!
At less than 100 pages, this novella packs a punch. Although Lily, an accomplished Vet, has a few TSTL moments, her heart is in the right place. Some of the characters were very one dimensional because there wasn’t time to learn more about them.
Great short story about a new vet in town, and how far she's willing to go to ensure dog racing isn't hurting any more dogs. Of course, there's an interesting love interest, and the title points at who that is. I enjoyed it. It's a quick and entertaining read.
I enjoyed this read even though it was over too quickly. The storyline is something that surprised me and makes me wonder if animal cruelty will ever truly be stopped? Hope you enjoy this great read!
I thought this story was good, but it felt a little too short for me. I enjoyed reading about Lily, although I thought her love for animals was a little fanatical. I wish the story had more of Honey in it.
I liked this one, I just wished it was bigger. Lily was a woman who wanted to do the right thing and help but we can't do that without help. And Carter, he was a really good, for never giving up on her
This is a great novella and a lot happens. It is action packed and suspenseful. I found myself cheering for Carter when he insisted on “non-dates” with Lily. This is a great way to spend a night reading about Evers, Texas.
Honor and Protect: It's sad what people do to dogs when it comes to racing them. Fantastic writing and dialog! It was a different type of a romance but I still enjoyed Carter and Lily's story!
I guess all the large animal vet's I've known are a bit tougher, as they could kick your fanny with one hand tied behind their back! I loved the story and can't wait to read the next book!
