“There was a popping sound, and a torrent of purple glitter exploded all over the floor. Dammit, Isabel. I’d been joking when I’d said the best way to piss off a trespasser was to throw glitter at him.”
“The fire mage scrambled to his feet.
“Whoever heard of a fireproof plant?” he demanded of the universe in general.
“Welcome to Faerie.” I disentangled myself from the thorns, snagging my jacket in the process. “Common sense need not apply.”
“Is this what you used to do?” I asked. “You guys hate each other. Before all this madness started, did you always go around pissing off every head of each supernatural community in town?”
“Sometimes I pissed off the ones outside the town as well.”
I burst out laughing. “Vance, I think I’m a bad influence on you.”
“My hand came away covered in dirt. So much for our date. “Next time I’ll be the one to rescue you, I swear. I’ll even carry you out.”
His mouth quirked a little. “I’ll keep that in mind. You need to get home. It’s not safe here.”
“Ivy Lane—”
Too late. “Hey, Vance,” I said brightly. “I’m at the Necromancy Guild and Lord Evander is insisting on keeping me in custody on false allegations. I’m sure you’d be happy to come and explain to him that I’m here investigating a murder.”
My heart thudded in the silence following my words. Five seconds passed. Ten. Crap. Maybe I’d finally tipped him over the edge.
Twenty seconds. “I’ll be there.”
