Bad Things #1

The Devil in Disguise

Rate this book
Don’t make the devil angry…

Luke Thorne loves having one hell of a good time. As the ruler of every dark creature to walk the earth, he certainly has more than a bit of a bad side. He lives for danger and isn’t the type to lose his heart—mostly because he doesn’t have one. Then she walks into his life.

Mina James is seduction in the flesh, a perfect temptation that the devil himself couldn’t pass up. Too late, Luke realizes he’s let a real siren into his life, a woman who is bent on using his dark powers to free herself from hidden enemies. Since Luke isn’t the type of man to be used, he should walk away from her, but…something about Mina draws him close.

Soon he’s realizing that she isn’t who she appears to be. Not dark and cold, but burning red hot. Mina is a woman fighting for her life—and the Lord of the Dark suddenly finds himself in an unlikely role…hero. Luke isn’t going to let her enemies destroy Mina. He will fight heaven and hell to keep her. But in the end, the secrets they both carry may just rip apart a love that should never have been…

There are Bad Things in the world…very, very bad. Are you ready for them?

WOW WOW, WOW...this was an AMAZING read.

Luke Thorne was one hell of a sexy mofo. This book seriously had it all. It started out running and just never stopped. The plot was awesome. The side characters interesting (and I can't wait for their books). The hero and heroine were likable and well written. The sexual chemistry OFF THE CHARTS.

description

Action, love, twists, and turns. Great potential for future storylines. One of the best paranormal books I have read in AGES. This is a definite recommendation from yours truly.

What did I think of this book?

description

I fucking loved it.

If you like your men slightly angry, demanding, possessive, powerful and for them to growl 'mine' - then this is the book for you!

If you like a heroine who isn't a weak arse whiny bitch, who can kick butt, who doesn't bend over and grab her ankles for every man she sees - then this is the book for you!

If you like a story that's filled with action and intrigue, that has side characters you want to know more about, with just the right amount of sexual tension and a side dish of angst - then this is the book for you!

Roll on September and the next book! *crotch thrust*

Let's talk about expectations for a moment. In the blurb to this book I am told there are "Bad Things in the world" and then I am asked if I am ready for them? Well, yes, dear author, I was. Too bad you didn't deliver.

Lured again by overall ratings (4.6 on Amazon and 4.07 on goodreads), plus a steal of a deal at 99 cents for a multi-house author who has been a finalist for Romance Writers of America awards three times, I started this book believing I would be wowed. Well, it was fine. Perfectly fine. Unoriginal, but fine. Oh, and the "Ruler of Darkness" as the main character - not so much.

Luke Thorne as the devil was a marshmallow, without a single display of true evil in the whole book. For not a single moment did I think that Luke was going to do something actually evil. Vindictive or revengeful - yes. Spine-chilling and demonic - no. In fact, the mythology of the paranormal creatures in this book is barely explained. They just are. Which was too bad, because then there might have been a modicum of depth to the plot. It is obvious that the back story to several secondary characters will be explained in future books; I just don't care enough to continue.

The female lead, Mina, is also fine. Without depth, but fine. I pretty much felt nothing for her. No sympathy (despite her orphan status), no empathy (despite her desire to get rid of her power), no pity (despite the cruel punishment received by her "handlers."). Nothing about the storytelling was evocative. What it felt was flat and phoned-in.

Even the plot was sort of episodic. The whole book takes place in the span of a few days. Nothing complicated, no connections to be made to world affairs, philosophies or politics. Pick up hottie, get captured, screw, chase bad guys, get captured, get rescued, screw, chase bad guys again, boom!, go swimming, big fight, kiss and make up, the end.

Back to expectations. I admit I had some, given the ratings and the author's backlist. But like on Top Chef, you are only as good as your last dish. Sadly, this one left me unsatisfied despite its 4+-star hype. And that is the really "Bad Thing."

5 - "Even in the dark, a little light can shine..." Stars!

Cynthia Eden certainly knows how to start off a new series with a bang, and I have to admit that after reading The Devil in Disguise looks set to be another absolute winner for me.

Packed with action, plot twists and a great new cast of paranormal characters, the author delivered everything that I expect and more from one of her books.

"You are not nearly as big and bad as people say…"
"Oh, I am. Never doubt that."

Luke Thorne lives a very carefree existence on earth, being leader of all dark forms he pretty much does whatever, and whoever he wants, wherever and whenever he wants. That is until Mina James walks into his life, and nothing is quite the same thereafter.

"I’m the kind of woman who should be savored."

It’s clear from the beginning that Mina is not just your bog standard human, and Luke for all his carefree ways can’t seem to shake his inclination to be with her. Their attraction burns hot, but as to be expected full of pit-falls, unexpected enemies and more than one or two surprises to ensure the path to the bedroom is not just laid with carpeting, but bodies, explosions and more than a few unexpected discoveries.

"I want you rough, I want you wild, and I want you dark."

One thing the author excels at is introducing secondary characters at a rapid clip without it ever becoming confusing for the reader, there is a lot going on with this story, being the opener to a new series you have the backgrounds of several secondary characters being developed alongside Luke and Mina’s relationship, add in the suspense aspect and it’s a fast paced plot that keeps you engaged. Luke’s right-hand-men/shifters; Rayce and Julian play pivotal parts in this one as well as his brother Leo coming into play in the second half.

"You need to let the fear go… I’m in control. Nothing bad will happen with me."

All of them offer lots of potential for future stories especially with the way this one ended, the ONS a covert group hunting and experimenting on paranormals is still very much at large so I predict we will have a good few more books to sink our fangs, claws etc into in the future.

"The time for watching is over."

Julian is actually up in the next book in the series On The Prowl is due for release in September, and I cannot wait to see what sort of story the author give this sexy British shifter.

"I’m keeping you."

Lucien “Luke” Thorne is Lord of the Dark destined to rule over the paranormals cast away from the light. Luke is content in his dominion until he meets a woman who calls to him in ways he hasn’t experienced in years, but her presence could unbalance Luke’s world.

Mina James is a feisty woman who believes her destiny is saddled in darkness but she isn’t about to accept such fate and decides to take matters in her own hands. Mina believes Luke is the answer to her situation but she learns there is a much bigger conspiracy at work.

As Luke and Mina work together to bring down an organized group of corrupt humans, worlds collide. Further complicating the situation is Luke’s brother, Leo, who rules the light and how the delicate balance between Luke and Leo is disrupted.

With Luke learning that he is capable of more than just destruction and darkness, he and Mina journey together to find that place where they can be their true selves.

While I found this story to be entertaining, there were some slow points in the plot for me. The characters were developed a good deal, but I was looking for much more regarding Luke and his history with Leo. Since this is a series, perhaps more will be revealed but each book seems to be a standalone within the series.

Overall, this book provided an enjoyable escape into the paranormal world.

This is from one of those authors who just never seems to disappoint . Her paranormal stories always whisk me away and I do find it hard to put them down and now here's another series to get my teeth ( perhaps even fangs?) well and truly into!
From the start we meet the somewhat jaded Luke and the author pulls no punches but quickly lets the reader know that he is the big bad that haunts the night. Ok now we have that out of the way what else is left to creep out the reader? Well there's the mystery surrounding Mina, a woman with a singular talent for getting her own way! No spoilers here but Mina is definitely getting into hot water when she targets Luke but far from being vengeful Luke is absolutely pole axed by her audacity.
I have to admit here that the attraction between them is almost nuclear but there's a lot to go through before they get jiggy if you take my meaning. As to what they have to deal with well they share a common enemy that's powerful with a pretty long reach. As this is the first book in this series we not only get introduced to those with pretty nasty ideas but also interesting supporting characters which include shifters, a vampire and then of course there's someone who is much closer to Luke! I can easily see the direction the second book might take but just how the author will improve on the tense passionate story here remains to be seen. If you want a story pulsating with mystery and fire and of course bad guys then this book ticks all those boxes. Best of all though is the fact that not everything is black or white and just who is good and who is bad gets put to the test. I think you can tell I loved it and I can't wait to read the next book.

I am not a big fan of shifter/paranormal stories but I am a huge fan of great books and this book put me over the top! Some of my Goodreads friends had given this book great reviews but I was so reluctant, and it wasn’t on sale, so I dawdled and went on to read several mediocre books. When I saw Devil in Disguise on sale I one clicked and thought I’d read it at a time when I would be busy and I’d inevitably be putting it down…because I didn’t expect to really like it much. I was so wrong! Once started, I could not stop! It was continuous action, tremendous chemistry and passion between the main characters, interesting secondary characters, and twists and turns that continued throughout the story that I never saw coming. The Lord of Darkness was one hot alpha hero and I’m just disappointed that his story is over. However, I am extremely eager to read more in this series. I have a feeling I’m not going to be getting much work done.

Overall Opinion: Well...I tried another pnr romance book, and I'm still not convinced that I even really like the genre. It's not that I struggled with the idea of pnr creatures or the world or anything in this one, but it more about the lack of connection I felt between the characters. I didn't understand the progression from lust to love at all. I understand that lots of other stuff was going on, but I didn't feel like the connection was given enough attention. Like with suspenseful romance books I've read in the past, the balance between the focus being on the suspense/pnr and other events vs. the romance is important to me. I didn't feel like this one was well balanced. I am bummed about that because Cynthia Eden has done well with that for me in some of her other books. I'm sure I'll try another pnr romance again sometime when I'm wanting to step outside my box, and hopefully it'll work out better for me...

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Mina and Luke's story. They meet at a bar one night and they are instantly connected. Luke is the "Lord of the Dark", and Mina is a siren and searching for something in his possession that would take her paranormal powers away because she is tired of hurting people. Mina's ex is looking for her and wanting to use her powers as a weapon like the other pnr creatures he and his government agency have captured. There are some suspenseful moments, some sexy times, and some sweet moments...and they get a HFN ending.

POV: This alternated between focusing mainly on Mina and Luke in 3rd person narrative (some side characters too).

Overall Pace of Story: Good. I never skimmed and I thought it flowed well.

Instalove: Kind of. I didn't understand the progression into stronger feelings, and that might be because I didn't really feel their connection overall.

H rating: 4 stars. Luke. I liked him. I did have a little bit of confusion because he didn't seem all that "bad" to me.

h rating: 4 stars. Mina. I liked how she was good and tried to help everyone including Luke.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Yes, but mild.

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW/OM drama: Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: Yes

Possible Triggers: Mild

Closure: This didn't have as much closure as I wanted, but I would call it a HFN ending.

Safety: This one should be Safe for most safety gang readers

I have to say this book wasn't exactly what I expected, I thought it would be darker it talks about Luke Thorne being the ruler of every dark creature that walks the earth and him not having a heart when actually he's kinda cute and a real softie, not at all what I expected.
The idea behind it is good, there's a prophecy, there's always a prophecy
'… Once upon a time, twin boys were born. One was predicted to be a bearer of light, the destined ruler who would protect all humans. He would fly through the skies and guard from above. He would be on the side of good. The righteous. The other twin…his fate was to be much darker. No goodness was seen in his future. Witches feared him on first sight. Seers turned away, shuddering at the visions they saw. Because he was born for darkness. Every creature that hid in the night would bow to him. He would rule them. The world would fear him. He would do very, very bad things. Time passed. The boys grew up. They lost their humanity and became something far, far more. One was good…wings spread from his back. Angels bowed to him. And his brother… He had a really f***ing good time as he did his very, very bad things.'
And it started well, I liked the idea of an agency.....well I'm not going to spoil it for you, it's an interesting paranormal read it just felt a bit too much like a Mills & Boon book to me,

My first book by Cynthia Eden and i'll be watching her very closely. This was a dark twist to an otherwise very famous 'fairytale'.

Lucien Thorne is everything you'd want in a Dark Lord- arrogant, hot and badass. Throw is some action, suspense and hot, hot sex scenes and this quickly became an un-put-down-able book :) Mina was sweet as she was sassy. There was insta- lust (although a peeve for me, this time it worked wonderfully) and i loved the intense chemistry the characters had.

I had a small issue though- Lucien had magic: i.e. he flicked his fingers and the heroine got naked but somehow he never 'flicked' his fingers to knock guns/weapons off the bad guys...:I I would have expected more badass from him but where's the fun in that...nothing like hand to hand combat.

Overall, a definite recommendation to PNR fans. Awaiting the next one in this series as it's about Lucien's bodyguard.

Why do we love the devil? Why do we love bad boys who do bad things?

This book was freaking awesome! It was one of the best PNR books I've read in a long, long time. I loved every minute of it from the interesting characters, to the suspense, and definitely the romance. Everything about this book worked for me.

I loved Mina and how she was a good person but also ready to defend those she loved. And Luke....what can I say about Luke. He is super hot and I loved seeing him fall in love.

I loved, loved, loved this book. September is a long ways away to wait for the next one. BRING IT ON Ms. Eden!

According to the prophecy, twin brothers are born. One to light, one to dark. The brother of light will rule over the innocent. The brother of dark will rule over the monsters of the world. In this prophecy, the brothers will battle against each other and only one will remain standing.

Mina James is searching for Luke, the dark brother. He has something she needs and even the brother of dark can't resist her charms. Luke is indeed charmed by Mina, more than he understands and it has nothing to do with her powers.

You've got the most powerful, dark being on earth who is known to be truly evil, fall hard and fast for seductress Mina. Mina only wants one thing fom Luke and then wants to get as far away from him as possible. The only hitch to her plan is Luke does not give up what belongs to him. Luke plans to not only keep the possession Mina is searching for but keep Mina as well.

When Luke finds out how much trouble Mina is in, he'll do everything in his power to protect her. He's powerful, possessive and maybe not as dark as everyone believes. He has a loyalty that a dark being should not have. He saved panther shifter Julian and werewolf shifter Rayce from losing themselves to their beasts. His need to protect those that belong to him speaks to the good that resides in him.

You also get introduced to twin Leo, the brother of light. Leo claims that Mina belongs to him, which enrages Luke, but both brothers must work together to save her.

I loved every minute of this book. The story was creative, exciting and kept me wanting more. I highly recommend this to fellow Paranormal book lovers.

This book is the perfect mix of fantasy and paranormal. I really enjoyed it from beginning to end.

”Are you the devil?”
“Only if hell’s on earth.”

My Luke:

Are you tempted? Lol. I didn’t mean for this pic to be so…revealing…but his…face…was just perfect to me. LMAO!

,.:

Luke is the devil, the darkness. He encounters Mina when she tries to manipulate him and seeks him out in a time of weakness. After he discovers her true motive, he is still determined to keep her. I loved that Luke’s character wasn’t too serious. He was laid-back, yet powerful, with a sense of humor.

à la Mode St. » fashion

Luke caught Mina’s chin in his left hand and turned her face toward him. “Guess what, sweetheart?”
“What?” The one word came out worried, fearful.
He grinned. “I’m keeping you.”

à la Mode St. » fashion

My Mina:

Elix:

Mina can manipulate people with the sound of her voice. She uses this ability but doesn’t like using it. She initially comes across as a strong, sultry woman, but she is vulnerable and hurting at the same time. She doesn’t like her ability because her enemy has exploited her ability for their gain. She is running from someone who wants to hurt her, so she seeks out the devil himself to try to steal an item that will take away her power so that her ability cannot be used for evil any longer.

à la Mode St. » fashion

My sweet embrace.:

”Tell me what you want most in the world, right now. Tell me…and I’ll give it to you.”
Disbelief rocked her. “Why?”
“Because I can still see the tears on your cheeks. Because they still hurt me.” Each word was growled. “Because I did this to you.”

à la Mode St. » fashion

I really liked this story, a mix of fantasy and paranormal. I even liked the supporting characters, Julian and Rayce, who were Luke’s security and also shifters. There are some hints of Julian’s past and Rayce’s past that I hope Cynthia will continue and write both of their books.

The only down side to this book is I want to know more! I found myself reading with all kinds of questions and I hope that Cynthia continues to write more and develop this fantasy/paranormal world in more depth.

“Maybe I’m bad so I can do good things to you.”

Luke Thorne is the Lord of the Dark, the ruler of all dark creatures. And he lives for doing very bad things. But lately his life has become predictable, boring. Until Mina walks into his life.

Mina James is on the run. She needs something from Luke that will save her from her enemies. But Luke isn’t what she expected from someone who is supposed to be evil.

Nothing is what it appears to be, and the attraction between them make it impossible for either to walk away. But can Luke be Mina’s hero, saving her from her enemies, if it means letting go of what he considers his?

He wasn’t supposed to love. Everyone thought he couldn’t love. And certainly, not love someone like Mina. Someone who was good and pure of heart. Someone straight from the light. But he stood before her, and the truth was undeniable. He looked into her bright eyes and he knew that he would do anything she wanted. Face any fight. Battle any foe. Give up all of his power…
For her.

I loved both Mina and Luke. Both are supposed to play certain roles because of who they are, but together they prove that they are more than what they are destined for.

I love this author’s romances. Her heroes are always possessive and protective, and Luke was no exception. And her heroines are strong-willed just liked Mina. Instant attraction is always a winner for me, and I loved it here. The chemistry between Luke and Mina was sizzling, and I loved every moment of them together.

I really enjoyed the plot of the story. Especially the prophecy of Luke and his good twin, and how they would someday have to fight to the death. And the suspense created by the agency intent on capturing paranormals and using them as weapons. There were some great secondary characters, like Luke’s shifter friends Julian and Rayce, and I can’t wait to find out what is going to happen next with Julian and Rose, his vampire love.

I love Cynthia Eden’s books. She’s one of my favorite authors. And once again she has written a winner. If you’re looking for a great PNR with sizzling romance, look no further. A definite must read.

DNF ~50%.

It started out OK with the prologue. Thought I was going to get some major anti-hero bad-ass for the lead male, but not really. He was kinda tame even in the beginning, but I kept hoping...

Progress to 50% was not terribly slow, it was an easy read, but there was nothing special either.

And then, the author, as one Amazon reviewer put it: "essentially castrated her main character." Nothing bad boy about him. Nothing dangerous and edgy. The h wasn't terribly interesting either.

So no, not wasting more time on this.

Luke is the ruler of the dark. He enjoys a fine whiskey and likes his life. All paranormals belong to him and he rules with an iron fist. He's practically invulnerable and no one would dare to come after him. He doesn't need anyone. Or does he? Because when he meets the woman of his dreams, Mina, he realizes that maybe he doesn't love being alone.

Mina knows she has power, but she doesn't know how or exactly what she can do. The little she does know she uses to her advantage. She wants something from Luke, and she'll use everything in her power to get it. But what happens when you pit the most powerful man in the world, aside from his twin brother, against a floundering newbie? A story of a hot collision mixed with tons of action and intrigue. Luke isn't the only one who wants her and as Mina is being hunted, she learns exactly how powerful he really is.

I've loved everything I've ever read from Cynthia Eden and The Devil in Disguise is no exception. I enjoyed the story building and introduction of characters that make up this world. I love dragons and all things mythical and this book gave me that. I also loved the way this story played around with The Little Mermaid. How cool is that? Everything that happened was entertaining and alluded to a bigger story and I know I'm going to love reading the rest.

Talk about PNR Perfection!!!

I absolutely loved, loved, LOVED this book! And devoured it top to bottom in one sitting, that’s how addictive and enrapturing Cynthia Eden’s writing is. Luke and Mina and their story instantly one of my all time PNR favorites! Up there close to Suzanne Wright’s Dark in you, that’s how brilliant we’re talking about here! Quick pace, smart and funny banter, insane chemistry and über sexy times, this book had it ALL!
I was so hooked in this world and it’s main and secondary characters, that immediately diving in the next in the series!
Devil in Disguise really was the Perfect PNR! And flawless start for what I’m sure will be a Top fav series for Bad Things!

"Even in the dark, a little light can shine."

First 5 Star Read of 2017!!

I loved everything about this book. If the rest of the series is as good as Devil in Disguise I'm hooked. It has an Immortals After Dark feel to it, but with it's own twist. One of the best paranormal romances I've read in a long while.

I loved Luke with his snarky attitude, his wicked humor and his all around bad boy persona.

"We aren't going to be friends." Just so there would be no confusion. Her gaze skittered back toward him.
He held that blue stare a moment, then smiled."We're going to be fucking insane lovers."

And I loved Mina too. She was a mix of sweet and sassy, innocent and seductive. She held her own against Luke and I loved every scene of them together.

"We are what we were always born to be."

This was hot, sweet, romantic, action packed and original. It has magic, bad guys, angels, devils, shifters, a dragon and even a mermaid! I highly recommend. I laughed, cried and in the end fell in love. Definitely going on my keeper shelf and plan on re-reading again soon!

Favorite lines:
"Nothing is going to bite you."
Well, he might.
But that would be later. And lots of fun.

"I know . . . I'm actually getting you into clothing. Trust me, I have issues with this, too."

Safety: Luke is centuries old, a powerful leader of the dark paranormals, Mina is a twenty eight year old siren/mermaid. Neither are virgins, there is no cheating. Mild OM drama. Ends with a HEA, no epilogue.

Nice and romantic paranormal.
Hero takes one look at the heroine and says “mine,“ and doesn’t let anything stand in his way. He is very protective and sweet with her.
If you are looking for darkness you will not find it in here, and that's my only complain because we have Prince of Darkness in here but he is more like

Very sweet.....

Yes!!! That's what I wanted! An amazing PNR!

This is the latest from Cynthia Eden, and it introduces a new series with a new cast of characters. I love her Paranormal Romances. I just love them. This is no exception. I haven’t loved her latest series, oh don’t get me wrong, I’ve definitely liked them. But this is what I’ve been craving. Not a dark and gritty UF, or her dark and obsessive men in

This is paranormal romance at its finest. I mean that with everything in me. I have so missed good PNR. This book was able to keep the same feelings from when PNR was in its heyday, and yet still give it a fresh spin.

I won’t spoil it, but I will give you a quick rundown. So Luke is the ruler of all things dark, and he has a twin brother, Leo, who is the ruler of all things light.

Luke is sitting in a dive bar off the Florida Keys debating whether he wants to step in and regulate the vampires and werewolves who are starting to fight constantly nowadays, or not, when a woman catches his attention. Her voice slips inside him and touches places that haven’t been touched in a long time. If ever!

She…intrigues him.

Mina is trying her hardest to seduce Luke and have him take her back to his private island. He has something she needs. And she needs it desperately.

Mina is afraid of her powers. Luke is a myth. He is the bogeyman for all paranormals. Most don’t even believe he exists. But Mina found him. And she needs a jewel he possesses. Her life depends on it. Or so she thinks…

The twists in this book are so well-done, and so perfect. I mean, just seriously. The thing I won’t spoil not only caught me off guard, but made the happily ever after that much sweeter.

If you like good PNR, if you like a good love story, if you like good plots, if you like reading, get this book. There is no one I would not suggest this book to, except maybe my sister because she’s boring and doesn’t read romance. And honestly, I still made her buy it.

So long story short, Cynthia Eden shines when she writes Paranormal Romance. You want this book.

Before I dove into this book, I honestly was expecting something completely different than what I got.

However, Luke Thorne was delicious in every way possible. I really liked the plot and the characters within The Devil in Disguise. The chemistry between Luke and Mina was amazing and smutty and god damn amazing. I guess I was just expecting more in a way? I don't really know if I'm making sense.. but for some reason I just feel like it or I was missing something..

I will probably dive into the second book because I'm kind of hooked on Julian and Rose already. UGH. Curse you books that suck me in! I just hope it just as good or even more amazing than this book.

Bring on the smut guys!

I decided to have a good night's sleep before writing this review but ended up dreaming about this book instead. I know, right? So, anyways, Luke is the Lord of the Dark. He controls all the monsters and bad things hence, the title of the series. While Mina was at first trying to trick him in order to get the eye of hell. I was really curious with the blurb and I love reading about shifters and vampires. Plus, a friend told me it is totally safe. No OW/OM drama and no cheating. What's not to love??? I really enjoyed starting this series. It started with a bang! And I can't wait to read some more.

Fabulous new world that I can really sink my teeth into. I love the snarky, dark, and powerful heroes so I was hooked from the start. Will definitely be following this series.

So this was ONE HELL of an AMAZING book!
Luke and Mina had so much chemistry! I absolutely loved the mystery, the crazy obsession, the angst, the romance and the secondary characters. The whole plot was amazing and Im always in for a bad boy/strong heroine romance!
Ive read CE before, and with this, she's BACK in the list of "authors Im gonna super stalk"! Cant wait to read more of this series.
Safe read.

I picked up this freebie on a whim and a rec. Premise is that the hero Luke is the Lord of the Dark (the theology here is unclear but we have references to Hell, and Luke has a twin brother Leo who is Lord of the Light). Dark bad, light good. Luke is the boss of the bad creatures, vampires and werewolves and so on, and then he falls for Mina, who is a siren trying to escape from wicked humans attempting to control paranormal beings.

It's a fun romp with lively writing but I didn't really believe in the badness of the Bad Guys, mainly because they were so unquestionably the good guys. This is totally on me because I insisted on assurances the hero wasn't a dick before I read this. But Luke is loving and selfless and loyal, as are all the paranormal baddies. They help people in danger, do the right thing, and don't eg ruthlessly murder anyone at all, barely even killing people who deserve it. I regretted this, though obviously it made them all a lot more sympathetic as characters. Take the word 'bad' as more a team jersey than a moral descriptor and it all makes perfect sense.

I absolutely loved the start to this new series. All of the stories say that Luke is bad so he's always believed it to be true. He's the ruler of the dark, yes. But he's also a good man. He cares for those under him and those that are loyal to him. Mina was able to see past his darkness to the man he truly was. I can't wait for Julian's story next.

Another wonderful book written by Cynthia Eden. I have never been steered wrong by her books. Anytime I need a paranormal read that is full of adventure, suspense, love, and of course...sizzling sex...this is my go to author! This is the first book in what promises to be an exciting series.

We are introduced to Luke, who is the King of Darkness, and he basically is in charge of all of the supernatural beings. When a very hot siren is put in his sights....his life will never be the same.
We also are introduced to a whole bunch of different supernatural characters..from a werewolf, a shapshifter, and a vampire. Oh yeah, and there is a bit of a mystery thrown in...All in all a great read...and I am already more than halfway done the second book too!!!
