So many fun bits in this one. The Chief leaves his Supa Brain Dots in a bad place and they all fall into the fishbowl. Hilarious events ensue including a flat Petey(haw, haw, haw), Love Spray (Yo! Let's smooch it up, brah!), and Obey Spray (it backfires. . .).Wee-oo-wee-oo, help is on the way. It's our favorite dog-headed copy to the rescue. Love the Rock, Paper, Scissors contests and the items that cost a certain amount of money plus "tacks." Unleash your funny bone and jump in.

🌟🌟🌟🌟.18 (4.18/5)

My ten year old and I had a fun time reading this book. My rating is based on Dav Pilkey creating characters that keep kids engaged and wanting more. My son read Books 3 and 4 to me, after we read this one together!!

Dog Man Unleashed is filled with fun, questionable antics that a kid would enjoy. It even has references that an older reader would appreciate.

• Dr. Boog E. Feva

• Children asking, “What is a phone booth?”

• Children asking, “What is a VCR?”

(Come on...You are either laughing or smiling. 😂😁 If you are not, then you are young enough to be my son’s playmate).

I am not the biggest fan of Captain Underpants and some of its toilet humor (no pun intended), but I think Dog Man is a character all can enjoy.

Dog Man is back in this to save the town from the villainous Petey the cat. Petey the cat creates trouble but he also has someone else creating trouble whilst impersonating him.

I liked this better than the first book and it definitely had more laughs than the previous one. Also, Petey the cat may be the bad guy but he sure makes for the most interesting character in this.

I do think that some of the wording isn't suitable for kids as it is predominantly a kids series but I also think that's personal preference because some people are okay with that and some aren't.

My five year old read this - and desperately wanted to review it, so here goes!

"I really really liked the characters and I especially liked the hypnotised dinosaur, and I also liked the story because it was exciting. It was exciting when you got to know that Flippy the Fish was the evil stranger."

Dog Man Unleashed is the sequel to the very popular book Dog Man. I ended up reading this book after I read books three and four. Unleashed was a decently enjoyable experience, but this book just felt like a set-up for future books.

Book Cover

Obviously, this book has the signature Dav Pilkey style to it, but this book felt unheedingly random. Characters that were introduced in this book play very minor roles in this book, but they play major roles in the books to come. Also, this book kept on introducing new things that didn't fit in with the story much at all.

I wasn't completely bored by this book, I was just confused and disappointed. There was barely any rhyme or reason to anything. I'm a big fan of the Dog Man and Captain Underpants series, but this one wasn't that good. I highly enjoy the child-like humor that Dav Pilkey presents in his books. The intentional misspelling and crudely drawn artwork give his books a really unique mood, which I enjoy and find hilarious. This style is present in this book as well, it has the infamous Pet Store joke, which made me laugh out loud. But overall, this book was crazy-random and comparing this book to the others in the series, I was left pretty disappointed.

I read this book because Logan (8 year old son) likes this series and I am reviewing it for Kiss the Book blog. I realize that as a 38 year old woman I'm not the intended target. The English teacher in me is appalled that these books are published and handed to children as reading material. Just a sample from the book, "If you like action, suspense, romance (a dog sniffing another dog's backside) and laffs (that is the spelling used!) then Dog Man is Go!" The characters talk to each other: "'Dog Man is go?' 'That don't make no sense!' 'But we like it!'" Heaven help me! I understand the need for books for struggling readers and the story line is actually creative but can we maintain some semblance of literature. Reviewed on Kiss the Book

I think I mentioned this in my last Dog Man review, that while I read this book ,out loud, to my kids, I can't help but tell you, I read it out loud in a really bad Boston accent. This one was okay. I like the humor Dav Pilkey comes up with, but this spin-off seems harder to get into than the dynamic duo George and Harold. With that being said...I think Petey the Cat is a fun villain to have in all the books. Unlike the first series (Captain Underpants), this one seems to just follow Petey's attempts to outwit Dog Man. Almost like the cartoons that came before him for example, Plankton from Sponge Bob, always trying to get the secret formula for Crabby Patties.

I will continue to read these books out loud to my children and hopefully one jumps out as being better than the previous ones. So far it's not really funny or action packed.

After years of recommending these books, I finally opened one and learned that Dog Man was created when a bomb blew up a cop and his dog; to save their lives they sewed the dog's head onto the cop's neck -- what I thought were whiskers are STITCHES -- my soul has left my body

Whereas Dog Man was a sequence of episodes presented as long chapters, Dog Man Unleashed is one adventure divided into short chapters, and the change works well enough. The police chief has good reason to be proud of his heroic half-man/half-canine cop, but he struggles not to lose his temper with him. What kind of policeman chews up sensitive documents, licks the chief's face because he's happy to see him, or uses the office floor as a bathroom? Dog Man has a lot of unintended mischief to make up for as Chief's birthday approaches and the police staff decide to throw a party. Dog Man is dispatched to buy a pet as Chief's gift, but unwittingly gets stuck with an evil fish the store wanted to be rid of. Flippy, as Chief names the fish, will play a role in this story.

When a mysterious stranger robs the pet store, the evidence strongly suggests Petey the cat is up to his old tricks. Sure, he's in jail, but a nefarious trickster like him can't be ruled out as the prime suspect. Incensed at being accused of a crime he didn't participate in, Petey hatches a plan to escape jail and confront the real villain. He colors a life-size paper cutout of himself and then fools the guard into believing Petey has been squashed flat. The frantic guard has paper Petey rushed to a hospital...at least, he's supposed to end up at the hospital. Instead he's brought to witch doctor Boog E. Feeva, who administers a dose of Living Spray that brings the paper cat to life. Swiftly dealing with the guards sent to monitor him, Flat Petey uses Obey Spray to bend Boog E. Feeva to his will. But where are the real Petey and the unidentified individual who robbed the pet store?

Using his "Love ray" invention, real Petey sways the townspeople to his side. He commandeers a military tank and cruises the streets on a treasure hunt, but once again he's underestimated Dog Man's knack for subduing criminals by following his canine instinct. What dog can resist playing with a ball, even if it's the control lever for a tank? Thrown from his perch, Petey flees the crowd of people hypnotized to love him and takes refuge back in his jail cell. Petey is no longer a problem, but what about Flat Petey and the mystery criminal? Flat Petey conjures up a dangerous creature to fight the cops, but Dog Man is uniquely equipped to neutralize it. The pet store robber is finally unmasked and reveals their surprising story, and Dog Man and Chief pursue Flat Petey to a snowy mountaintop, where the final confrontation ensues. Can Dog Man pull off a miracle finish to apprehend Flat Petey and the mysterious pet store robber?

Officer Knight and his dog became an excellent policeman once Knight's body and the dog's head were joined together. Dog Man is as afraid as anyone when Petey and other villains bring monsters to life, but he never fails to defeat them when he stops worrying and acts on his canine instincts. His urge to play with every ball he sees bails the police out of two major crises in this book, and that's ample reason for Chief to overlook the exasperating things Dog Man does and recognize he's the best cop on the force. We might all have better success if we stopped overthinking and relied more on instinct. The humor in Dog Man Unleashed is about as good as that of Dog Man, which is to say very funny, though this book's plot is more confusing. It's hard to keep track of Petey, Flat Petey, and the mysterious stranger all wreaking havoc simultaneously. This is a fun story, though, and I'll read the next one. Look out, world, for Dog Man: A Tale of Two Kitties.

2.5 stars. My son bought this with his Christmas gift card last night, so I picked it up. It's not my thing, but I do love the illustrations and, as a teacher, I appreciate Pilkey for what he does for young readers, especially reluctant males.

Silliness abounds when Dog Man Unleashed comes to life. Humor full of potty jokes, doggy puns, and stupidness, kids will giggle non-stop. Arch enemies, Dog Man and Petey the Cat try to outwit each other with the help of some devious characters.

A quick read, this sequential art book is full of laugh-out-loud situations and colorful hijicks. Kids will be screaming for this second in the series.

This sequel has the same silly humor but the plot is slightly better than the first. Thus, the extra half a star. . . And my son loves these books, and I love my son.

A quote from the epilogue: "You know, today was quite a day! Nobody learned anything, there was no atonement, no rebirth, no revelations, and not a ounce of character development or personal growth. It was just a buncha mindless action and dumb luck. What I mean is, today was the Best Birthday Ever!"
