Life’s not easy for a workaday cell, and amid all the hustle and bustle it takes to keep the human body going, it can be hard to know who’s an enemy and who’s a friend. You might think all germs are bad, but it turns out some bacteria aren’t just friendly, they’re downright essential (not to mention cuddly)! In fact, when an old nemesis returns, it might just be those friendly, cuddly bacteria that help save the day. The saga of life inside you continues!
As others have noted, this is the first volume of this series to feature a single continuing story. An ordinary cell becomes frustrated with his day to day existence until a chance encounter with some unusual germs gives him purpose. Then it's off for a tour of the lower regions of the digestive system, and an old enemy returns to face our favorite white blood cell again …
Honestly, continuing storyline aside, this feels like marking time. I still love the idea of this series, but many of the scenes in this volume just feel like slightly different versions of scenes we’ve seen before. Even the much vaunted continuing story is basically just a road trip through the digestive system. The returning villain is almost an afterthought. I’m still liking this series, but it feels like maybe the limits of Shimizu’s invention have been reached? I kind of hope I’m wrong about that. We'll see what volume six brings ...
Pero aquí aprendemos sobre las bacterias lácticas, que son bacterias benéficas, el intestino, variantes de influenza, y de nuevo las células cancerígenas, y las bacterias del intestino.
If you've read this far into the series, you've probably gotten used the all the immune cells screaming 'DIE GERM'. But not all germs are bad. Some bacteria are actually good for the body. This volume focuses on that.
And if you haven't guessed from the back cover, an old enemy has returned. Let's just say, things get...messy.
This was pretty cute and had a few really epic battles!! This one featured White Blood Cell and Cell (just a normal cell) with a bunch of new cute germs!
I thought the characters were pretty epic and there was some fast character development. There is an overarching story (just realized this) and I really wonder how it's gonna go! Can't wait until the next volumes!
. Paling nyesek pas baca tentang sel kanker, apalagi karena mamer baru saja meninggal dunia karena sakit kanker ... Aku berpikir, gini ya visualisasinya ketika sel-sel dalam tubuh saling bertarung ...
Woah, an arc that covers the whole book? What madness is this?
Fun exploration of positive bacteria, but not my fave because Cancer was back, which is generally not fun to read about. Points for not being sympathetic to cancer this time, though.
So I’m studying in general biology with a transfer to vet technician and this is a great review on my biology and zoology class 😂😂😂 I wish I had read this back when I took those clases on the immune system. It’s pretty accurate with the information and it teaches it in a fun way!
Yet another harrowing adventure in the body but this time we get good bacteria! Lactic acid bacteria are so adorable!...well, at least in manga form they are. 😅
Five volumes in, we finally have both a story that lasts through the entire volume and recognition that not all bacteria are bad. This has been a very strange way to learn about the immune response, but I did in fact learn.
This volume of the Cells at Work series was just as wonderful as all the others save one small detail: Miss Red Blood Cell was hardly in it at all! It was kind of a bummer, hence why I didn't rate it as high as I usually do, but the rest of the story was great!
We got to see more of White Blood Cell though, which was perfectly fine with me, and a new POV of a regular cell which was cool. There were new foes, old foes, and all sorts of cellular drama! The plot was humorous, serious, touching, and flowing with incredibly accurate cellular science.
Basically, it was well worth reading even though one of my favorite characters wasn't even in it.
I was also super excited to see that there was a sixth volume because I thought this was the end of the series (which was why it took me so long to read this volume). I can't wait to see what adventures all the cells will go on next!
RATING: 4/5 If you like NYUUU!!, Lactic Acid Bacteria, and Opportunistic Bacteria you may like Cells at Work! Vol 5
QUICK REVIEW This volume features the cute Lactic Acid Bacteria and showcases more on good bacteria vs the bad. This story was ultimately a filler in my opinion but it was still amusing and very cute. The real standout is the last two chapters where we see an old enemy again and are treated a fantastic illustrated fight scene. I will say I love the full page "fatality" artwork here and would recommend this to any Cell's at Work fans!
REVIEW This was a bit strange as we get no Red Blood Cell appearance until the very last page. This volume focuses on our White Blood Cell and the common cell from the previous volume. This volume up until Chapter 24 felt more of a filler. We do get a really cute story with the lactic acid cell which was amusing and informative. This was ok not the best side plot but it was nice to see and learn about good bacteria in this body. Chapter 24 was fantastic and really shines in this read and although I felt the fight ended rather abruptly the last two chapters really had me glued to the page. Fantastic artwork near the end. If you have already this far you know the style and will most likely like this volume.
Whew, my previous criticism of the lack of a larger arc was totally fulfilled by this volume. The whole good bacteria story arc of sorts was great as it gave us a new perspective (the ordinary cell) as he discovers the different abilities of different good bacteria in the body. It's kind of funny how the anime series tried to maintain a red blood cell sub-plot alongside this one while the manga stayed focused on this bacterial journey.
Lots of great insights and we managed to touch on different aspects of digestion as we moved deeper into the body. And quite the surprising encounter with an old foe in a potentially newer and certainly deadlier form that REALLY stresses some of the inherent dangers of conditions that the body has to figure out how to fight off.
Great, great volume. Really enjoyed this from start to finish.
When a normal cell discovers some cute little baby bacteria, he can't bring himself to report them. White Blood Cell can sense them, though. But instead of killing the littles, he takes the cell and babies down through the digestive system where the little good bacteria find places where they can help the body. Meanwhile, KT is hunting a rogue cancer cell that has come back.
I like how this one shared various ways good bacteria can help us. And they drew them like cute penguins, so that was a bonus. Another great volume that teaches real science about the immune system in a very entertaining way.
Notes on content: About 5 minor swears. No sexual content. The battle with the cancer cell gets kind of bloody. (But it is all black and white, so it doesn't seem so bad.)
This time was all about the lactobacteria in the gut and one cell's desire to protect these adorable little guys from the immune system. (and I finally found where they noted who was the medical advisor for this because this is really good) So it's a White Blood Cell volume.
It also returns to the idea of cancer and how they're a body cell gone bad and how the regulatory T Cell works.
These are always hard to review without giving things away but yes this is a fun volume and the art is outstanding.
This volume featured a normal cell and some new beneficial bacteria. It was fun getting to know the digestive system and seeing how the harmless bacteria coexist with the body cells. White blood cell does some angsty 'I only live to kill' brooding. :)
Content notes: Nothing that would keep this out of a middle school library. There is some violence as white blood cell knifes bacteria and some light swearing maybe.
The entertainment continues and this time featuring the stomach and all the excitement that goes with it with good and bad bacteria inside the stomach and how the intestines work as well. I continue to be blown away by the creativity of explaining bodily functions and reactions in addition to HOW the body works through this manga series with personified characters and creatures to teach anyone willing to read it a little science.
This gotta be my favorite so far! Not only did it have a continuous storyline that all connects, but its the perfect balance of light hearted and serious drama. I love the development on the ordinary cell and telling the different sides of bacteria. It's getting more complex and that makes me super happy.
This one did have more pages then the previous volumes but that could have been because of the interwoven storylines.
We meet some unknown antigen, which White Blood Cells is going to kill. Cell finds them and wants to protect them but what is NK Cell doing here? She appears to be looking something. An former enemy returns.
I did enjoy how the storylines were connected in each chapter.
This was another great volume. All chapters in this volume form one continuous story. There is no Red Blood Cell in this volume. White Blood Cell's companion here is a regular Cell. Killer T is back as a Memory T, and NK Cell also shows back up. The story is again entertaining and educational. We learn about good bacteria in the digestive system. And Cancer makes a return with some neat art.
Where was the red blood cell through this whole thing? I liked seeing the NK cell and the Memory T cell, formerly known as Killer T cell interact. I liked the lactic acid bacteria but I didn't care for the white blood cell giving the regular cell a tour. I feel like I learned a lot about the intestinal tract and "good" bacteria.
I highly enjoyed the previous 4 books of the series but this volume was rather disappointing. Cringey and boring, and I didn't really learn anything interesting. Hope volume 6 will bring back the fun I loved from the previous books.
This is a first for the series - the entire volume essentially comprises one storyline. A regular cell rescues a bunch of good bacteria and WBC helps him to find where they belong and what they do. It's cute and works well, even if the return of Cancer Cell doesn't quite fit in with the rest.
