Kings of Hell MC #1

Laurent and the Beast

Rate this book
Nothing can stop true love. Not time. Not even the devil himself.

1805. Laurent: Indentured servant. Desperate to escape a life that is falling apart.
2017. Beast: Kings of Hell Motorcycle Club vice president. His fists do the talking.

Beast has been disfigured in a fire, but he’s covered his skin with tattoos to make sure no one mistakes his scars for weakness. The accident not only hurt his body, but damaged his soul and self-esteem, so he’s wrapped himself in a tight cocoon of violence and mayhem where no one can reach him.

Until one night, when he finds a young man covered in blood in their clubhouse.

Sweet, innocent, and as beautiful as an angel fallen from heaven, Laurent pulls on all of Beast’s heartstrings. Laurent is so lost in the world around him, and is such a tangled mystery, that Beast can’t help but let the man claw his way into the stone that is Beast’s heart.

In 1805, Laurent has no family, no means, and his eyesight is failing. To escape a life of poverty, he uses his beauty, but that only backfires and leads him to a catastrophe that changes his life forever. He takes one step into the abyss and is transported to the future, ready to fight for a life worth living.

What he doesn’t expect in his way is a brutal, gruff wall of tattooed muscle with a tender side that only Laurent is allowed to touch. And yet, if Laurent ever wants to earn his freedom, he might have to tear out the heart of the very man who took care of him when it mattered most.

An amazing,captivating story.

It's no secret that K.A. Merikan are two of my favourite MM Authors.Their stories are brilliantly unique-you never quite know what to expect. This is a very well thought out, cleverly written story. What happens when two worlds collide and two very different men are drawn to each other. One,completely innocent and one worn down by a life he never envisaged for himself.

-1805

Laurent Mercier is just 19,an indentured servant, separated from his family. He cuts quite a lonely figure....he has no sexual experience but yearns for the touch of a man..His one passion is his love of books,so when he thinks he's met a kindred spirit and someone he's attracted to he is finally ready to give in to his desires. He could never have forseen how his life was about to be changed forever.

-2017

Beast is 32.Badly disfigured in a fire,he's covered his body in tattoos-the last thing he wants is pity from anyone so he chooses not to seek the company of other men and is resigned to be alone. But appearances are definitely deceptive because deep down he's a good man.

When Laurent enters his world he has no idea what to make of the strange, beautiful, young man...but,one thing is clear,he's deeply attracted to Laurent. But could someone like that be attracted to him?

Laurent, what can I say? These Authors have created some truly fascinating, engaging characters in their books and Laurent is no exception.I just adored him.His beauty, his innocence, his naivety and his strength captivated me.

But,has he left one life as a servant only to become a prisoner in another life?.And how far is he willing to go to live his life the way he wants to?

Laurent and Beast's story is far from perfect at times.Beast's insecurities about his appearance are always there, bubbling away under the surface and while Laurent might be innocent he knows what he wants from life.As they get to know each other Laurent sees past the outward appearance and really sees the man Beast is inside.

"I once knew an incredibly handsome man. When you looked at his face, his beauty made you assume he was the perfect gentleman. But deep down,in his heart,he held evil you wouldn't comprehend.People are wrong to judge you by your scars."

This story has a dark, gothic feel to it.As a reader you know what Laurent must do to obtain his freedom but you really have no idea how things will play out.

I can already tell it's going to be an amazing series and with three more books to come,I'm totally invested. The next one is Knight's story and I can't wait....he's a total manwhore in the most delicious way but I'm guessing there's a lot more to him.

Time-travel,age difference,innocence,darkness.....a very well executed story.Highly recommended.

This book was SO amazing that I am left feeling speechless right now! I loved Laurent and Beast (Kai ❤️) and everything that happened from the start to the end. When I started reading (after procrastinating so much because it was a bit longer than the books I usually read), this is what I felt:

*spoilers ahead*

And I wasn't wrong, guys, in feeling and saying that. Every event that happened made me feel something, whether it was eager curiosity as to how Laurent came to be in front of Beast--which got revealed in the next chapter (no long wait, thank you, author)--or melting affection for how Beast took care of Laurent while just stealing my heart effortlessly, or gut-wrenching pain for the endless cruelty that Beast was suffering from his useless father, or sobbing heartbreak when the true details of King's pact with the devil were revealed and what role my lovely, endearing Laurent was to play in it, or the fierce aggression I felt along with Beast at the time of revenge for Laurent's fate, or, lastly, the excitement I felt when Beast arrived to save Laurent.

There is a proverb "leave no stone unturned". My conclusion about what the author(s) has done here is a bit similar. She left no emotion that could feel overlooked or ostracised from being a part of this wonderful journey. I stayed up SO late at night and got ready so late today just because I couldn't part myself from the bucketful of emotions and the fierce love that I was feeling all the time. NEVER did I doubt how much Beast and Laurent loved each other, and NEVER did my heart stop praying for them to get together without any sacrifices.

And at the end, my sentiments can eloquently be described with this wonderful gif I found:

I cannot wait for Knight's story after reading the wonderful little epilogue in his POV! 😍

P.S. - There were A LOT of typographical and punctuation issues ('Beast' was spelled as 'Bast' one time, 'bass' as 'base' and many more things). I hope the author can have it edited.

Laurent and the Beast

I mean... Just LOOK at this amazing cover by Natasha Snow Designs !

Chapter 1 - http://kamerikan.com/laurent-and-the-...

It's a long erotic M/M romance with a distinctly gothic feel. Time travel, bikers, and devil pacts. Bookish clerk meets tattooed all over biker.

So many things about this story had me reading long into the night:

- the time travel element: intense and wrapped up in dark magic

- the creepiness of the house where Beast and the gang live: dusty mirrors, flickering lights, creaking staircases, satanic symbols on the floor

- the historical aspect (The book is set in the present, but Laurent was born in the late 18th century; his obsession with plastic knows no bounds.)

- the epic romance: jealousy, anger, lust, LOVE

- Beast's friendship with Knight (I wasn't a fan of Knight's girlfriend drama or his reckless sexuality, but hopefully he'll change his slutty ways in book 2.)

- the scorching PASSION between the MCs (Laurent is such an eager student, and Beast utterly obsessed with pleasing his man.)

- two complex and imperfectly real MCs: BEAST (insecure, damaged, emotionally stunted, troubled, hopeful, selfless) and LAURENT (innocent, brave, wise, manipulative, free)

- Hound, Beast's rottweiler; he's a teddy bear at heart but protects his own.

- hurt/comfort at its finest (Beast heals Laurent's eyes; Laurent heals Beast's soul.)

- the fairytale quality: despicable villain, an impossible choice; love (ALWAYS) conquers hate.

I'm rounding down to 4 stars because I was not thrilled with the way the book ended. I did not expect the demon/mystery plot to be wrapped up in a neat little bow; this series is called Kings of Hell for a reason. But I expected a longer HEA for Beast and Laurent (just one more chapter!).

I don't like it when authors use the epilogue to set up the next book in the series, which is exactly what happened here. But never mind that; I enjoyed the, uh, hell out of this book and want more, so much more!

"Even though we were born centuries apart, I'm sure our souls are entwined."

Even though I did enjoy this a lot, I have mixed feelings about it. It had aspects I absolutely adore, but also things that frustrated me to no end…

The main thing I loved here was the general idea of the book: it’s a beauty and the beast retelling mixed in with time-travel, a biker gang, and a pact with the devil.
You cannot tell me that that doesn’t sound good!

Thus, it is not a big surprise that I ended up really enjoying the plotline and tropes that were explored with this novel. It was engaging, intriguing and even quite unique.

Unfortunately, I do have to say that the pacing was a bit off and I couldn’t help but feel bored from time to time. Some scenes were just too long and the book could be very heavy on the descriptions, which I’m not a big fan of.

Luckily, I absolutely adored one of the main characters: Laurent.
His ignorance about all things concerning modern times was simultaneously adorable as well as hilarious, especially since he was otherwise clearly such a smart guy. His innocence, kindness and just overall sweetness also warmed my heart.
His personality truly made me see him as the beautiful angel he was described as looks-wise.

However, my love for Laurent also leads me to one of my biggest complaints with this book which was the treatment he sometimes received from Beast.

Beast might have been terribly insecure about his looks and scarred skin, but he honestly didn’t need to worry about that, because even if he had been as handsome as he used to be, there is no way he had been good enough for Laurent as a person on the inside.

I just didn’t like how Beast got angry over nothing, had so much mistrust, or lashed out quite viciously when things didn’t go exactly the way he wanted them to.
The worst thing about it was that every time something like this happened, it was Laurent who tried to appease him and came crawling back. It was never the other way around, and I don’t think Beast ever apologized first, if at all.
At least he did always forgive Laurent quickly, as it was impossible for Beast to stay mad at him long and he just wanted to be with the sweet and beautiful boy so badly.

And honestly, I did really enjoy their relationship when Beast wasn’t being completely unreasonable.
Outside of their quarrels, Beast had a lot of affection for Laurent and seemed to adore his beauty and character. In their better moments, he damn near worshiped the ground Laurent walked on. I loved that.
What I also loved was the way Laurent saw Beast. He never saw him as ugly or monstrous: instead, he was completely accepting and gentle with him. It warmed my heart to watch Laurent see through Beast’s outside to look at his inside only and fall irrevocably in love with him that way.

All in all, their relationship could definitely make me swoon just as much as it could irritate me. Hence, my mixed feelings. But overall, I had a lot of fun with this book and my love for Laurent was very strong.

I'm not going to lie...when I read the blurb for this book, I knew I was going to read it no matter what. It hit my iPad and I started reading it immediately. I read it as fast as I could. I was ensnared from page 1.

It had some of my favorite troupes: Beauty and the Beast, MM, Time-Travel, Good vs. Evil, Paranormal/Magic. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. I DEVOURED IT.

∞1805∞Laurent was a gentle and beautiful soul. He only wanted to be loved by a man and treated with respect. He did not want to be property any more. After a horrifying experience, he made a deal with the devil. Little did he know that it wouldn't cost him his soul but the one thing he wanted most in this world.

∞2017∞Beast is a tortured soul. He only wants someone to look past his physical form and be loved for who he is. He wants to know the loving touch of a man again. When a bloody Laurent shows up, he feels a draw...a need to protect and to have. But what if it's just not meant to be?
"Only now he truly knew how much he missed sex. How much he missed having someone in his bed but also being cherished and appreciated not just as a great leader within the club, a good friend, and a responsible man, but as a lover worth touching and kissing. By allowing him so close, Laurent replaced a piece within Beast that’d been broken for so many years."

Things aren't easy for these two. There's lots of misunderstandings due to what little knowledge Laurent brings from 1805 and the way things are in 2017. There's hurtful words, pain and separation. But underneath it all is love...unconditional, self-sacrificing love.

“I’ve misunderstood you so badly. You are perfect to me. I wish I could take away all your pain myself. If you could only see yourself the way I see you, you would know no change is needed.”~Laurent to Beast

"Beast’s true self was watching him somewhere from beyond the scars, a person deep within, whose ear has not been ripped off, and who just wanted him to be happy with the glasses. There was so much anticipation in that gaze, as if in this moment nothing else mattered to Beast."~Laurent and Beast

It's beautiful.
"Laurent was the answer to his most secret needs, pliant and wonderful, and trusting in a way that made Beast wish to cherish him, even if his mind was filled with the dirtiest of thoughts."

It's sad.
" Beast could hardly remember the last time he felt so fully accepted. It was as if his scars meant nothing to Laurent, and maybe they really didn’t."

It's gut wrenching.
"For once he thought that maybe it wasn’t his tattooed face that they were judging, but that they wondered how a guy like him got the pretty ray of sunshine to hold his hand."~Beast

It's amazing.
"I’ve never realized love is more valuable than freedom. You are everything to me. Even though we were born centuries apart, I’m sure our souls are entwined.”~Laurent

This book was just phenomenal. I loved it all, every stinking STRESSFUL minute of it. And can I just say, I absolutely CANNOT wait for Knight. What a filthy dirty little slut he is. It's time for him to be brought to his knees.

“Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself within a forest dark. For the straightforward pathway has been lost.”

Time travel. Deals with darkness. Murder. Laurent and the Beast combines the innocence of an early 19th century young man with the grit of a 21st century motorcycle club. And what a pleasure and joy it was to read. I've read time-travel stories before, but none so gripping and original as this one. I loved the premise, the execution and the resolution and if it weren't for the fact that I needed to sleep, I would have read this book in a single sitting.

Laurent Mercier and Beast are such different characters. There's not only an age gap, but a huge time gap, as well. Not to mention life experience. And both Laurent and Beast are dealing with their own baggage that effects how they are with each other, but I loved how they brought out the best in each other and learned how to be with each other.

Laurent is 19 and the picture of 19th century innocence. He's young and, unlike most young men his age, he has no sexual experience at all. He wants to find love, but he's never been attracted to women and in the early 19th century, loving another man could end with him hanging. Still, he wants to know what it's like to experience pleasure that only the touch of a man could bring him. Laurent is also the picture of naivety. He's too trusting. After what seemed to be a courtship from a man who frequented the bookshop where Laurent worked, he thought he could finally know. That decision forever altered the course of Laurent's life.

Beast is 32 and heavily disfigured from a fire more than a decade ago. He lost more than his good looks that day and now Beast has resigned himself to being alone for the rest of his life. He'd rather be alone than be pitied. Beast is such a good guy, though. He's got a huge and generous heart. He's smart and organized and never shies away from doing what needs to be done. His father, King, doesn't appreciate him, at all, but everyone else sees Beast's worth.

I absolutely loved seeing the modern world through the innocence of Laurent's eyes. Everything was fresh and new and things we take for grated every single day are things that are more like magic to Laurent. And I loved that Laurent never once looked at Beast and saw a monster. He looked beyond the scars and tattoos to the man beneath and saw the beauty that Beast really was.

And Beast was generous and caring. He did stumble along the way, because of his own self-esteem issues, but he tried and when he and Laurent finally figured each other out and learned to trust each other, there was no stopping them and not even time, the depths of Hell, or the devil, himself, could keep them apart.

To say I loved Laurent and the Beast would be an understatement. I'm looking forward to seeing what this series has to bring and where this world takes us!

Recommended (to those that like dark, gritty, romance KA Merikan style)!

Ok, I'm going to fangirl all over K.A.Merikan in about 0.5 seconds. You 've been warned.

Holy shit! OMG! What was this? What did I read? Best paranormal story there is, and I don't do paranormal. Time travel, serial killers, impossible choices, a motorcycle club, and the devil himself are in this book! Also, history, genealogy, and occultism, all masterfully wrapped up in a beautiful bow! So.incredibly.GOOD!

I understand now why people love time travel stories. It was fascinating seeing the modern world through the eyes of Laurent, a character that lived in the 1800s and was transported to the future. How alien the elements of our everyday life seem to someone not modern. Laurent loves plastic!

But it's not just material things. What's even more interesting, is how the concept of freedom and equality is viewed by a servant from the 1800s era.
"Couldn't all clocks just stop ticking in his heart, as if reminding Laurent of the future that was too terrifying to consider?"

I loved Beast with his hard, disfigured exterior, but with such a kind heart. He's mocked, misunderstood and underestimated. He would even make a deal with the devil to change the way he looks, and be worthy of Laurent's affection. Except Laurent doesn't think he's any less than perfect.

This is a deeply romantic tale. It might not be swoon worthy, but it's the real thing. The bone melting kind of love that doesn't care about looks. The love that gives you the guts to walk through fire for the other person.
"Even though we were born centuries apart, I’m sure our souls are entwined.”

In true K.A.Merikan fashion, the action scene in the end is a masterpiece. The villain came straight out of a gothic horror movie.

The ending is a HEA for the couple, a satisfying ending for the paranormal storyline, but it's ovious that this is going to be an ongoing theme in the series.

Needless to say, highly recommended! Can't wait for the secondary characters to get their own story.

Very much 5 stars. I loved this. I couldn't stop reading it, flaking off a whole day of writing to keep going! It has contemporary elements, but is mostly a fantasy. The time travel element is not overdone, but it's there, and out-of-place Laurent behaves in the manner you'd expect. His old-fashioned dialog was very cute. I liked that Beast had a temper, he wasn't perfect. And the miscommunications between these two made total sense given their different perspectives. But of course love wins and I was glued to my seat waiting to see how things could possibly work out.

I really enjoyed it and I think most MM readers will too. On my "best of 2017" list. Run, don't walk, to read this one!

Would you believe someone if they told you they were from a different time?

-Gay Beauty and the Beast retelling
-Futuristic time travel
-Paranormal

Laurent is a 19-year-old indentured servant working in a bookstore in 1805. He has a crush on a man who comes in to the shop to discuss books with him. Laurent is a complete innocent in every way possible. I wanted to wrap him up and keep him safe from everyone.

This story begins so sweetly, and then becomes horrific, and then the real story begins. A deal is made. Fast forward to 2017.

Beast is the son of the Kings of Hell MC president. He is a former gorgeous manwhore that sampled any and everything offered, but now he is covered in burn scars and tattoos. He has been celibate for the past 10 years.

Beast’s father, King, is an asshole. He continuously ridicules, and belittles Beast at every opportunity until Beast’s self-esteem is nonexistent. There is a malicious reason for this, but it doesn’t unfold until later in the story.

Beast discovers Laurent in their clubhouse covered in blood, wearing very strange clothing, and extremely confused about the world. Beast is ordered to clean him up and keep an eye on him.

Laurent has so much more self-confidence than Beast does. He is also highly intelligent, speaking multiple languages including Latin, and he thinks quickly on his feet...which he needs in order to pretend he knows what is happening around him.

This is a SLOW burn. Nothing happens between the two until past the 50% mark. However, I appreciated this as it gave Beast and Laurent time to get to know one another.

I couldn’t get enough of all the sweet moments with Laurent. He is utterly taken with this futuristic world. Eyeglasses, plastic, clothing, underwear, and new foods simply amaze him.

As much as I loved this story, there were a few moments when I was irritated with both characters. They both made decisions that felt out of character, then there would be a complete switch of mood. I had emotional whiplash between the two of them! This was surprising because usually KA are so good at writing character development and depth.

My biggest complaint comes from the dreaded miscommunication conflict. Ugh, just talk to each other already!

Overall, I loved the creepy pnr aspect, wished the love story had been a little more fulfilling, but the ending was satisfactory. Hfn.

Huge props to narrator Joel Leslie, he did such a wonderful job with the voice acting in this one. In particular, voicing Laurent’s sweet French accent. This audiobook lasted for 15.5 hours, so I’m thankful I enjoyed the narration. Looking forward to Knight’s story next, although that audiobook is almost 17 hours long.

Laurent & the Beast held me completely captivated from the turn of the first page. I literally lost sleep over this one; it was addictive and moreish and unputdownable and utterly unlike anything I’ve ever read before.

Dark, gritty, and mesmerizing, Laurent & the Beast follows the story of two very different men falling in love under fairly dark and mysterious circumstances. With one hell of a chip on his shoulder, Beast is a disfigured ranking member of the Kings of Hell Motorcycle Club, whereas kind and innocent Laurent is a man literally out of time, sent to the future and into the belly of the MC clubhouse to do the devils bidding for the high price of his own survival and freedom.

The paranormal elements of this story, along with the dual time period aspect, definitely sparked my interest. I appreciated how these themes played a pivotal yet secondary role to the characters themselves and the complex relationship they forged over the course of this multi-themed story.

The opening scenes with Laurent in 1805 were particularly gripping and slightly horrific, but beyond the terror, I immediately fell head over heels in love with his character. Laurent, even with his sweet and wondrous nature, was an unexpected force to be reckoned with; he instinctively fought to survive the incomprehensible horrors he initially faced, and quickly and impressively adapted to the new world (2017) he was thrust into, with its strange and unfamiliar ways. Through it all he remained pure of heart and provided some much needed joy and levity to the darker themes that surrounded his story.

Beast was a harder character for me to like. He was a bit too grouchy and too quick to rage for my liking, but I understood his psyche and why he often reacted in the extreme ways he did. At the core of it all, Beast just wanted to love and be loved, and, although it took a while, he eventually found that once in a lifetime love with his sweet Laurent.

These two complex and imperfect characters made for a great and truly memorable book couple. I loved their story and how it often epically unfolded.

Needless to say, I relished this entire reading experience and can’t wait to read more in the series.

What a unique book!

These ladies are very talented and every story they come up with is unique and something you know your not going to get from any other author. They are fearless in their story making. They write about things that make you uncomfortable and yet in the end, make you love. They write about kinks that most would not touch on. This is just another one of those out of the box stories that I felt iffy about and ended up completely enjoying.

Beast is covered in scars and tattoos. His appearance and massive exterior puts people off. They either look at him in fear or pity. He wants to be seen as neither. He's existing but not really living. He's alone and lonely and decided to be this way because he doesn't believe there is a man out there that will see past his scars, his tattoos, his massive build, and see Kai not the Beast. That is until Laurent appears. Literally.

Laurent is quite alone in his world as well. He is without family and working as a servant. He is young and quite naïve and too trusting. Which is why he finds himself in the arms of a man he thought he had found a kindred spirit with. But this man was a monster in the most frightening of ways one could be. After he defeats his monster another one shows up offering him an out and a life where he can be free to love who he wants and to be his own man and not a servant to another. But of course it comes at a cost. Laurent agrees to the demons terms and finds himself in the future in the company of the Kings Of Hell MC and in the care of Beast.

The relationship that unfolds between these two men is nothing but sweet. They have their ups and downs and miscommunications but the sweet outweighs it all. We get to see the real Beast and he is nothing but a big teddy bear that just wants to give and receive love. We get to see the world anew in Laurent's eyes as he discovers all the ways the world has changed from how it was in his time. We also get to see how people treat Beast just by his looks. The insecurities he has about being able to keep someone as beautiful as Laurent by his side. The struggles he has about the way he looks. But we also get to see how Laurent touches Beast with no hesitance and how much he cares for who the man is and not what he looks like, although Laurent actually likes what he sees when he looks at Beast. We just get to witness another epic love with epic characters that these ladies have created.

The book is dark with demons, time traveling, two captivating characters, and a love so epic that even a demon couldn't destroy it. Loved it.

Happy reading dolls! xx

It seems time traveling stories are not for me. I couldn't get to love this one. I'm in the minority here as almost all my friends loved this.

I was really excited to read this new series by my favorite duo writers, but I think my expectations were too high. I couldn't really get into the story. The characters seemed so childish. Childish to say the lest. Laurent's ignorance was understandable, he traveled 212 years in the future, but he was very annoying at times. The miscommunication made things worse in their relationship and I rolled my eyes a lot while reading. I'm really sorry to admit it wasn't what I'd hoped for.

I've buddy read this with my best friend and even if we had a good time sharing our thoughts and highlights, I couldn't get to love this story.

The mystery and suspense made me turn the pages, but I didn't feel any earth shaking attraction between Beast and Laurent. I was curious about their HEA, this much I can admit, BUT I didn't understand their choices or actions. I wanted so much more. I had so many questions and scenarios.
I can say this story surprised me, but not always in a good way. I was on the edge of my seat a few times, but I expected so much more from the ending. Yes, King got what he deserved and they ended up together, but I wasn't too happy about the epilogue.

Hope the next book will be much better. Looking forward to Knight's story.

Laurent and the Beast from K.A. Merikan is a fantastic book!! I have recently been in a binge reading mode and the author of choice has been K.A. Merikan. I have plowed through numerous books by this writing duo and loved each and every one - they are beautifully twisted masterpieces! Laurent and the Beast was one of the last books I read from these authors but it has made a lasting impression and I am seriously dying for the next book in the series! (Not to mention a couple other books by these two amazing authors..*taps foot*) 😆

I am not sure where to start when talking about this book because the entire thing was amazing. Yes, all 360 pages! In-fact, when I got to the end I was like -- noooo, keep going, please!! I wanted MORE! Greedy, I know! So, before I go into the story follow this link and check out the Laurent and the Beast Pinterest Board from K.A. Merikan. Are you back? Okay..I love that the authors set up a little visual inspiration for us to get in the groove as we travel into their world.

Laurent - he is an indentured servent who is attracted to men living in a time where having those desires could get him killed. He takes care of a bookstore for his owner, which is becoming increasingly hard as his vision is failing him. He is trying his best to hide it; afterall, what good is a servent of a bookstore who can't see? He ends up in quite the predicament after making a delivery to a prominent gentleman, a gentleman who may have also flirted with Laurent and gifted him the sweetest red apples. Now Laurent is making this delivery, with two of his juciest apples, and the hope that he will be asked to stay the night and offer his favor to a man for the first time. When nothing goes as planned and Laurent ends up face to face with the devil himself - he is asked to do the devils bidding in exchange he will get to live in a place where he is free to love a man without fear of death. Next thing he knows, he is standing in a run down building with a large man mountain of a man whos skin was covered in some type of hellish alphabet and a mule of a dog both growling at him, and he is both scared, excited and a little curious. Rather than be allowed to explore and find the King he was sent for, this Beast of a man was putting him through an inquisition and Laurent was learning some things in the future didn't sound too good...

“What’s the last thing you remember? Do you know whose blood this is? Do you work at a living history museum?” the giant asked, taking Laurent into corridors he hadn’t seen yet. It was much darker here, and he struggled with the worry that he’d end up stumbling again. But the giant’s grip on Laurent’s arm was secure enough that he would keep Laurent upright if that happened. “A museum… where you keep the living?” He didn’t like the sound of that at all. Damned souls locked behind glass for an eternity while demons came to gawp at their naked bodies. His mind was getting fuzzier by the moment. “Okay, okay. You are fucking confused. Did you hit yourself on the head? Does it hurt?”

Beast - He is the Kings of Hell's Presidents Son and he is cantankerous and someone you don't want to mess with. His body is scarred and the scars are covered in ink - he lives for the club. When he finds a young looking man covered in blood on his property it is the last thing he wants to deal with. However, when the man is finally cleaned of all the blood - he finds himself being a little protective if not just attracted to the twinkish man. When he is told to help get Laurent "settled" as their "guest" he finds he likes the way Laurent looks to him for guidance and isn't put off by his looks. Before he knows it he starts having thoughts of "couplehood" and while he never fully trusts Laurent he does find his heart warming to the man and his other body parts are definitely interested!

The tale that the authors weave for Laurent and Beast is nothing less than brilliant. I found myself laughing, saddened, pissed off, and wondering what was next. I surely didn't want this story to end and I am dying for book two in the series. There really isn't a lot more I can say without giving stuff away...so, my advice - buy this book and read it immediately! You will love Laurent and his Beast!

5 Stars!!

Dark

Obscure

A twisted fantasy tale.

This is the story of two worlds colliding. Future and past. 1805 and 2017 converging for just one reason: the constant human need to be more, to be better, to be what we are not. Two timelines joining together two different, but lovable guys. A sweet love story flooded by dark magic. And yes, you've read right, to me it was sweet. Very.
A novel that tells us about human evilness and ambition. A dark tale about our particular beauty and the beast.

"The path to Paradise begins in Hell"

The beauty is Laurent, a naïve servant from 1805 who travels to the future under magical and scary circumstances to meet Beast, our tough biker from 2017. A burned and injured man who is better, much better that it seems.

I've been reading time travel novels since I can remember. I also watch any aceptable sci-fi movie time-travel related, so the premise of this book was my cuppa just for that.
But here we are adding bikers to the mix and I'm a sucker for those too. The dark atmosphere that surrounds the good ones is so appealing to me that I can't say no. Every time I see "MC" in a tittle, I want to try and read it  (disastrous consequences always expected)

So I had two of my things in one book and it could have gone the wrong way, mostly because to write about time traveling is not easy and it's not always well done. Here? A TOTAL HIT. The incident in perfectly introduced, executed and ended. So no niggles at all. Smooth. Perfect.
This is pure fantasy. This novel is about evil, occult sigils, hell, dark souls, and darker pacts with the devil.

I loved, (LOVED) this first installment of the Kings of Hell MC, by K.A Merikan.
It's dark and, paradoxically, funny. The authors manage to get that necessary obscure atmosphere for the story to stand out, making it disturbing and creepy (the club house is a former asylum, FFS, talking about darkness).
And this perfect mix between the creepy and the laughs (and the sweet) works in a magistral way here because our MCs are good, nice and kind. Yes, we're talking about bikers here and I know they are not every reader's cup of tea. It's a very specific background with very specific roles but these guys are not bad, what sorrounds them is, but not them inherently. They are imperfect, yes, and sometimes you want to smack them, (very hard) and yes, not everything is legal or comfortable with them. But even with that and the supernatural thing, they are still pretty cool and likable.

The suspense is also very well done. I'm a bit picky in this matter too because I love racking my brains to figure things out. And fortunately here, you want to know how and you need to know why. You are guessing since the beginning what is going to happen and how it all started. You have your suspicions while reading it but you don't really know how everything is gonna fit and be resolved. That's fantastic and It's not always easy to build that thriller atmosphere and maintain it all the way but here it's perfectly executed. I really enjoyed it.

The characters.

They are from different times. Different worlds. They are so unlike in the outside, so distinct in their perspectives,.. age gap too (Laurent is 19 and Beast 32)
They don't have an easy beginning. They go through a hell of exasperation, hidden agendas, jealousy and lust. But they have their HEA and how they get there is natural and realistic. As a reader, I appreciate that a lot, because they are so full of flaws, everything feels very real. Their selfish behavior (I'm talking about both MCs) is understandable at times and that makes you feel near to them.

"The skin in which Beast lived was his personal inferno"
My beast. So lovely. So judged from the world outside. So misunderstood because of his looks. As Belle gets her Beast´s heart in the sweeter Disney story, Laurent will win this awesome man's heart here. Twisted and darker, but the same essence than the fairytale.
Beast was my indiscutible winner in this story. I love this scarred and brave man.

"When travelling in time, couldn´t he had been given the average height of a 2017 man? Was that too much to ask?"
Aaaawwwww, Laurent. How cute you are. I want to lick you from head to toes and everywhere in between.

He is so innocent and funny you could leave out his selfishness and true intentions. He wants his freedom, his ideal life and his main purpose is to get it. He wants Beast in his life, that's true but first: his future granted.  And that's why I loved Beast more. He is rougher, apparently worse, a mean biker living in a world of violence. But he really is a softie. An insecure man living a tough life and facing destiny the best he can. He is strong, he smiles and keep going, he is sweet and has a tremendous heart.
As I said above he is also selfish in his attitude, mostly because of this life experience and the willing of being the man he was before, the handsome one. The beautiful blonde guy who can offer Laurent all he needs.

The way these two fall in love, and start a life together building a solid path step by step (lies and secrets included) is so imperfect that is pure perfection. Perfect execution. It was a pleasure to read about it. To read about Laurent and Beast

This is a fantastic book. The writing is marvelous and the plot very attractive and well driven.
So if you don't run away from bikers as if they were a plague and you enjoy paranormal, dark and time traveling,  this book is gonna drive you crazy in the best of the ways.
I loved every single page and I would recommend it to anyone who meet the criteria above, and even if you are not a biker's lover these guys are cool enough to turn you to the dark side.

I welcome myself to the Kings of Hell MC! Knight, I'm coming! Be prepared!

Highly recommend!

To be honest, I don't know how I feel about this book.

First, half of this book until 50% was amazing. It's not entirely illogical how Laurent made a pact with the evil to escape his horrible fate after murdering Mr. Fane in self defense and how he was transported to 2017. And I love that how there was an instant attraction between Laurent and the beast and how their relationship developed from that.

And from around 60% of the book after L&B (bow chicken wow wow for the first time .. 😁) to around 85%, the book went downhill. Emotional spiral and total nonsense of inner conflicts .. it just sucked frankly. I also didn't like that it was sooo very vague about how King got in a pact with the devil and how he could be so cruel to his own son. It makes sense that he's a monster and he could even sacrifice his own son for thriving his own vitality but we at least need some background on that. And I was in a love/hate relationship with Laurent. He was such an asshole to beast like half of the time, I wanted to punch him. Thank god that things got picked up after 85% of the story because I was seriously considering not to continue to read. The ending was quite pleasant but I'd love to know more about L&B in the epilogue because it's their story in this novel and not knight's. The epilogue feels a bit abrupt.

So overall, did I loveeee this novel? Was it be my next favorite series? Nah, I don't think so. Yes, true, I really did enjoy this novel but I did not love it. It was a decent read with an appropriate HEA. I don't feel like there's so much gore and abuse and torture as advertised and as others thought. May be it's just me used to reading twisted story lines but I truly don't think this one contains that much horror. However, although I did not loveeeeeee this series, I very much enjoyed it and the story line is interesting enough, I'll keep reading other books in this series. Who knows, may be I'll love the second book much more than this one.

Laurent and his love for plastic 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😀😀😀😃🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂😲😲😲😗😗
Hahahaha hahahaha 😂

I enjoyed this story, it was a very sinister book to read! I love supernatural stories, with romance it gets even better.
Another thing I love are stories with time travelers, the guy was from 1807 and ended up in 2017! Very crazy, I loved all the reactions of Laurent with all the modernity he found.

Laurent took me laughs, found him and beast an intriguing and tasty combination to accompany.
It may sound cliché, but I'm a person who believes that beauty is in the soul. There's no point in you being super beautiful and having a rotten soul.
Beast had a beautiful soul, he just needed a Laurent to accept it as he was. The father of beast was abominable, I was very hatredof this character.

King was disgusting in many ways, wanted to kill him personally!

I didn't like the women in this story, I was ashamed of all of them. One more bitch than the other.

Nao, Jordan, Martina... I only have one thing to say about them.... Disgust💩👎

I don't know if I'm going to read Knight's book, I found Knight to be an irritating character because of wanting to have sex with everyone.

KA Merikan doesn't disappoint with MM book couples. I loved Laurent and Beast ❤ I hope I can read more from them in the future.

EDIT: Right, I'm at my desk now so I can properly give this review the attention it deserves. You know what I love most about reading? It's that sometimes you find a book with a subject that you didn't even know, until you read it, that you'd needed to have in your life.

This book is one of those. Ask me if I wanted to read about a time travelling book clerk hooking up with a scarred and tattooed motorcycle club bad boy to fight against a devilish (yes the actual Devil) plot and I'd have been "what the hell are you smoking mate?"

So it should come as a surprise to discover that not only did I want to read this book, I needed to read this book, to the extent that it kept me up until 3am this morning because I had to finish it and I physically could not force myself to put it down.

I'm not going to spoil it for anyone going into the book blind, nor am I going to rehash the plot, all I'm going to say is that people should read this book for one reason, and one reason alone - because it's a thrill of a ride.

This book pushes the boundaries of what's expected in an MM romance novel, adding in the spice of an air of mystery and magic, building up the sexual tension (the first full sex scene doesn't happen until almost the 80% mark and then it's virgin sex so even more hot and erotic!).

Wonderfully contrasting the two disparate settings of a character from 1805 and one from 2017 without ever making it feel like a fantasy novel, the story weaves its way into a complex and detailed relationship between two uniquely identified MCs. Both Laurent and Beast are fully fleshed out, their fears and hopes fit their characters and their relationship grows at a realistic and believable pace.

There are a few odd grammatical tenses which occur at times - the use of has instead of had threw me a couple of times but not enough to spoil my enjoyment of the read. Kat and Agnes have again exercised their incredible imaginations and brought to life a world which is our own but with just a hint of "Through the Looking Glass" about it to add the element of "what if this were real?"

I want to shriek that this book is absolutely AMAZEBALL!! But then I worry I came on too hard and people will be skeptical of my review. Well, fuck that! I love this one so much, definitely my best of 2017 yet, and I might just be feeling a smidgen of disloyal to my other boys, Dom and Seth.

KA Merikan, the power duo seems to incorporate every little things that I love in a fiction to fit inside a book.

1. M/M - two cocks, nuff said.

2. Beauty and the Beast - I'm diehard B&B fans where the Beast stay a beast. The Beast here is a survivor, just waiting for the right person to see him beneath the tattoo and scars. I like the fact that he is very close off and feeling vulnerable most the time.

3. Biker - Beast is the badass tattoo guy riding a hot rod, although I gotta say the riding part was quite limited here. He seems intimidating, but had the biggest heart of all. I totally swoon with the way he handle Laurent like he is something priceless. Is good to read about a biker who is neither an asshole nor a slut.

4. Time travel - Is fascinated to see naive and innocent Laurent from 1800s trying to navigate his way in 2017. I would love to discover the world through Laurent's failing eye. He provide too much comic relief that I feel bad that I derive pleasure from his obvious discomfort. His fascination towards plastic is to die for and he speak like a Prince.

4. Paranormal - The paranormal element here really spice things up and help to increase epic scale of the suspense because you just can't know what the otherworldly being will do next.

5. Unrequited love - This always make me feel all giddy whenever both heroes didn't know that their feeling was reciprocated. They seems so silly, yet totally adorable with their pettiness. But it just me make me hooked on their relationship even more.

6. Sex scenes that I actually read every single word - It surprised me that there is a limited sex scenes here because we knew how dirty a KA Merikan book can be. I didn't even realize it due to the fast moving plot. But it really works in a satisfying way. Every intimate scene had me hooked and I can't pull my eyes away for every kiss, every caress and every fuck.

7. Suspense/Epic climax - I swear I actually sweating through the last few moments. Even though I had absolutely 100% confidence that KA Merikan will provide a satisfying ending, there is still the nerve and excitement at every turn of the page.

That's all I gotta gush for Laurent and his Beast. I hope this is going to turn into one epic series for me to moan after. I'm already feeling all giddy for the next book, which will feature the slutty Knight. He is simply too slutty for my taste, but I'm sure someone gonna tame him and make him monogamous soon. Dying to see it happen!

When I read this in the blurb, my head whip-lashed and I went .... what?

"Themes: time travel, servitude, serial killer, cruelty, motorcycle club, alternative lifestyles, disability, demons, tattoos, impossible choices, deception, crime, self-discovery, healing, virginity, black magic, gothic"

How can all THIS be in one novel? And how can it even work? And then all those 5 star reviews came in. So I simply had to. Despite my reservations.

I mean: (Little) ME and bikers? (I read exactly ONE bikers' book before, funnily enough from the same authors which, to be fair, I enjoyed)
And: the paranormal? (Ok.I like magic, but this is more 'gothy' - come on DEMONS! and dark)
And: time travel? (Never tried that one before in a book, although I like it well enough in movies)

In short (and sorry I can see this is not going to be short AT ALL) I could not see this working for me whatsoever.

But HELL (see: rubbing off on me already) DID it work and HOW! Still a bit stunned. (You might notice all the capitals. I usually don't do that)

Just the first sentence made me gasp. I mean. Really?
Then I was on tenterhooks throughout the whole book. I gnawed my nails. My heart was pounding and I got very short with anyone trying to blooming interrupt me, and then I had to sleep (Damnation of damnations!) and then I had to go out for food (WHY?) when I was at 88 %!?

It is really the amazing MCs that did it for me (I think):

Beast: a giant of a man, a mountain of muscle, covered in tattoos. An intimitating fellow. Surely YOU would cross the road if you met him in the street. Darn I think I would, too. And it is so wrong. because Beast has been damaged inside and out to a degree he has lost himself completely. The cloud of sadness and tragedy surrounding him was tearing my heart out.
Because on the inside he is so soft and vulnerable and so so insecure it actually HURT to be inside his head.

Laurent: is so young, but at his time, in the 18oo, is considered a man. In 2017, he comes across as innocent, and weird and eccentric, but there is something ultimately RIGHT about his morals and the way he sees the world. And not only that, he sees Beast. Just sees him as the kind, wonderful man he is. Sees past Beast's scars and tattoos and marvels at his strength and goodness.

I loved his bravery, the way he copes with modern times, while retaining his wonderful innocence and joy. Which is something that allows Beast to see the world afresh from a new angle again.

And he is a virgin, and oh my, Beast does show him the way of the world - so hot and emotional, these two!)

But Laurent has made a deal in his time he has to fulfil if he wants to live. A deal that will compromise and destroy everything that has blossomed between him and Beast. Laurent is faced with an impossible choice. And the more he falls in love with Beast, the more impossible and painful it gets.

The last 20% were so tense I had to remind myself to breathe.

As for the ending - yes I could have done with a little bit more of Laurent and Beast sorting through their stuff, but considering there will be more books, I hope we'll get a glimpse of how they are doing.

A complete and utter and amazing surprise!

Highly recommended.

Well, that was not the best.

I wanted to like the book, the concept seemed interesting and at first I did enjoy my time reading it. However, shortly after things got worse.

In a novel so heavily leaning on romance it's important to like that romance. I didn't like the things happening between Laurent and Beast. It was terrible. But at first, let me start on the positive note.

What I liked:
• the concept is great. A young man from 1805 makes a pact with a demon and he's transported to 2017. I love time traveling element. Seeing this man from 18th century discovering 21th century was very entertaining.
Laurent is a darling and he deserves all the best. He's 19 year old and he's indentured servant in 18th century. After tragic events and making pact with the demon he appears in 2017. Laurent is very perceptive and bright, I loved reading about the world from his pov. He was the sole reason I didn't DNF the book when things went south.

What I didn't like:
(possible mild spoilers about Laurent and Beast dynamics)

oh where do I even begin?

My biggest issue is the other protagonist Beast. This man is living up to his "nickname". It's fitting that we don't learn his name until much late. It strips him from his humanity.

He has major anger issues and he doesn't deal with rejections well.
The first bell rang when he lost his shit after Laurent refused to sleep with him. How it happened: after a day of shopping (they knew each other for a day), Beast felt that he was entitled to have sex with Laurent. He accused Laurent of leading him on and deceiving him with his smiles. Can you imagine? Say it with me, you do not owe anybody your body. Beast bought Laurent clothes, glasses and he fed him. Nothing in this means he has a right to force himself on Laurent and get angry when he's rejected.

After that, I began paying attention to his thoughts and actions.

Example one: Beast is sulking because he wants to touch Laurent but now he feels he can't because of his ego. Beast is nursing his hurt ego and still he doesn't understand that he can't touch Laurent because Laurent hasn't consented to it. It's just beyond Beast's understanding at that point.

Example two: Beast is shallow. Beast is obsessing over Laurent's beauty. I'm convinced that if Laurent wasn't beautiful, nothing would happen. Perhaps, the writing is to blame for this impression, because the authors apparently were incapable of giving depth to Beast's infatuation with Laurent. It was truly tiresome to read.

Example three: Laurent says something that is unfavorable to Beast's project. Guess what Beast does after? He gets Laurent alone and chokes him. In next chapter, through Laurent's pov we see that Laurent is reasoning with himself that he deserved such treatment from Beast.
After that I lost all hope to enjoy the book and to ship this ship.

Example four: Laurent says he wants to have anal sex with Beast, Beast is prepping Laurent, in the middle of it Laurent says he has changed his mind. Beast again loses his shit and makes it about himself, not Laurent's wishes. He stops though. Small mercies. To be fair, Laurent asks him to stop to check if Beast would actually stop which is freaking valid, if you ask me.
No means no.

I don't like this unhealthy dynamic and the book made this relationship seem ok. I realize that books about unlikable characters and unhealthy dynamics exist and this is one of them, I don't have to like it though.

Speaking about unhealthy, Kings of Hell Motor Cycle Club resembles a mix of cult and gang. They earn money doing something illegal. We never learn what it is but they help to transport things. Drugs? Stolen items? Who knows. Moreover, there's a strict hierarchy which you can't mess. Future club members aka Prospects do everything for club member (Patches). The lovers and partners aren't treated as equal members of the club.
In numerous cases the quality "agreeable" was presented as the best quality a partner can have. (Through Beast pov and words, Knight said, these are the main characters)

At one point Beast tries to gift Laurent a vest with "Property of Beast" on it. Can you imagine what a person from 18th center would feel seeing this gift the person he's in love with? Another monster who wants to bind him?
I just love this exchange:
"-I will also not be your property. I refuse to.
-Why? Why not? If you're mine, nobody touches you. And I need you to be mine."

Maybe some consideration to the thoughts of your lover? No?

In later chapters, we learn that "property" means like wife of a biker. Okay then. I didn't know it. Laurent didn't know it. Beast knew that Laurent is unaware of modern day lingo. Again, Beast has no consideration for his lover. Beast is self-absorbed and he's an egoist.

I might go on but I'm tired.
There are some big gestures and dramatic sacrifices but at that point I was so tired.

The other thing that annoyed me, was sex scenes. Normally I'm A-okay with them in fiction, but I dislike Beast so much and I don't like Beast/Laurent romance, reading about them having sex wasn't enjoyable to say the least.

I give Laurent and the Beast two starts because of the concept and Laurent, they are stars, everything else is a mess.
I will not continue with the series and I doubt I'll read any books by these people (K. A. Merikan is team of writers)

Trigger warnings:attempted rape, sexual assault, dubious consent, violence, heavy burning & scars.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Might contain spoilers* ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

This book centers around indentured servant from 1805, Laurent Mercier (19) and Kings of Hell Motorcycle Club vice president, ‘Beast’ (32) from 2017. Beast is disfigured in a fire, covered in tattoos and refuses to let people think he's weak just because of his scars. Laurent is desperate to become a free man, a master of his own life. When Laurent makes a deal with the ‘devil’, he time travels to 2017 where he meets Beast. Beast who teaches him this new world, who's kind and patient and offers protection; makes Laurent feel safe and taken care of. Beast is insecure; how can such a beautiful, young man want someone who looks like him? While Laurent has to fulfill his end of the bargain, keep his agreement a secret, he might have bargained for more than he was willing for...
“I need a human to do my bidding for a short time. If you don’t fail, you will be free when accomplish your task. You will go to the Kings of Hell. You will find Beast and make sure he is in King’s house on the day he reaches the age of thirty and three. Make sure the King himself lives until then. Keep the details of your task secret from Beast.”

Overall, the story had potential. I'm sure if I had read it a year ago or something, I would actually have liked it a lot, but now, I found myself skimming; it started early in the book, which is not a good sign. There was something missing, I guess, for me to really get into the book. I think I just didn't connect with the character. Also, it was very predictable, which I find so strange; I wasn't expecting it to be that, you see. Beast, was no where near a beast, he just looked like one; with his size and all. He was really just a kind man, who deserves better than what he was given. Luckily Laurent gave him better. Wanting him for him and not wanting to change him. Laurent doesn't mind Beast's scars; finds his tattoos beautiful and meaningful. Together they were good for each other. But the story wasn't all that, and there were little action. And no, I'm not continuing with this series, even if it has a new main couple.
“I once knew an incredibly handsome man. When you looked at his face, his beauty made you assume he was the perfect gentleman. But deep down, in his heart, he held evil you wouldn't comprehend. People are wrong to judge you by your scars.”

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (A) Science Fiction/Time Travel Romance (M/M)
Series: - Series (Standalone?), Book One

Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Author; Unsure. Series; No.

Beast is part of the Kings of Hell MC, his father is the president of the club and the club's property is an ancient building.
Beast's skin was burned in an accident more than 10 years ago, he decided to mark his body with tattoos to own his condition, he prefered people look at him with fear and not pity or disgust.
After a club party Beast's dog, Hound, finds a man in one of the rooms in the building and the man is dressed in victorian clothing, Beast is instantly wary, how did this man got there? what does he want? why does he speak so weird?

1805
Laurent is a poor french young man, he came to the U.S as a boy after the french revolution and now works in a library, he is somewhat happy because he loves books but for some time now he's being losing his sight and is deeply afraid to go blind. He is also discovering his atraction to men, in secret he dreams with meeting a man that shares his desires.
He is called to sir William Fane's house to deliver some books, he's hopeful that this night might change his life and it does.
Laurent is scared and frantic when a demon appears infront of him and offers him a deal.
he can be free to pursuit his desires without being afraid of it being a crime, he can have a chance to get his eyesight back and he can be free to do whatever he wants with his life, he only needs to do something that sounds complicated but after feeling helpless Laurent agrees and is taken to another world.

Laurent and King, Beast'd dad, have something in common so King decides to let Laurent stay under Beast care.
Laurent is scared at first, he honestly believes the devil sent him to hell. When he realizes he's in the future he decides to take things in stride, he was given a chance, he needs to complete his mission and he's going to be open minded about everything in this new world.

Laurent's journey was beautiful, funny and sometimes scary. He doesn't understand the words, the thecnology, the customs, he is lost and he's only help is Beast who can be scary but Laurent can see that beyond the scars and the drawings in is skin he has a great heart, he gives so much to Laurent and in the end Laurent can't help but fall for him.

I need to mention Laurent's love affair with plastic, he was beyond amazed and excited about everything plastic, plastic is the best invention ever.

Beast was a very complicated character, he suffered a lot in his life and not only because of his scars. He is smart and respected by the other members of the MC but is put down everyday by his father.
He develops a soft spot for Laurent, he is mesmerized by the way he looks at the world and Laurent treats him normal, he doesn't see Beast scars so he helps Laurent with everything he can.
(Shoutout to Hound, I have a soft spot for dogs and damn if that dog wasn't loyal and scary cute.)

When I started this book I have to accept that I expected something a little bit darker but was surprised to find out this book is kind of cute, there is violence and some dark scenes but nothing awful. For a big chunk of the story I had the biggest smile on my face because even with the ups and downs Beast and Luarent's romance was adorable, the way they made a connection even if they had nothing in common, they way they gave up a lot just to see the other one happy, it was heart warming.

The paranormal aspect of the book was interesting and dealt in a great way, at the end of the book there's an ending and you are satisfied but at the same time you need more, there's a feeling of "this is not over yet" and that's fantastic because this is only book one in the series, even if the other stories are about other couples you know the paranormal is not over and damn if I'm not craving more.

Re-listen: 6/3/19—Joel Leslie ROCKED this narration! I liked it just as much as the first time I read it, if not more. Granted, much of the problems between the couple here were due to the miscommunication “conflict” but it can be forgiven here since it involved secret pacts with a devil 👿! Very much worth the revisit!

Original review May 2017:

A Devilishly Fun Ride! 4 Stars!

I was pleasantly surprised by this motorcycle club time-travel book! I had no idea what to expect.

What I got were bikers, a regency serial killer, a devil, a Beast, a beauty from 1805, and a mystery.

I loved Laurent, our time traveler together with Beast--a tattoo-covered burn victim. They work well and imperfectly together with lots of mistrust and secrets on both sides.

The angle of someone visiting from 200 years ago could have been better played--we adapted a little to well for my taste--but it was adequately done for the purpose of the plot. Was it perfect? No. Did I enjoy it and not want to stop reading it? Yes.

This is not as dark and angsty as the cover would lead you to believe and actually has an interesting plot that I didn't know how the characters would possibly resolve. Also a plus...there was much more plot than sex in this book. And the sex we did see was very steamy.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

god this was so good.

the characters were so well developed (maybe the antagonist was slightly too morally unambiguous but he was still a good character because it's not clear who the antagonist is at the start) and i really liked the time-travel mystery and the romance. and oh my god, the plot twists. the one at the ending was maybe predictable because i was like "omg of course" but at the same time i didn't expect it and i was internally screaming.

k.a. merikan are definitely getting better and better and i love them!! so much!!

Absolutely fantastic!

Bikers, time travel, dark magic, banter, splendid writing. What’s not to love about this book? I devoured it and I hated those moments where RL made me put the book aside because I was so engrossed I didn’t want to stop.

The whole idea of a bikers' club has always drawn me. Hot men with leather jackets, bikes, and tattoos? Pffs, please count me in.

Besides, this is a story that contains so much more that it was almost impossible for me not to love it. It’s my first book of K.A. Merikan and you can consider me a new fan of them.

Beast – 2017

Twelve years ago he was in an accident that left him disfigured. He’s 32 years old now and he has covered all his scars with tattoos that give him a look of a mean and badass biker (which he totally is but he’s also a great man underneath that horrible layer)

Laurent

He’s a 19 years old man who works as a servant in 1805. He has a long and gorgeous hair and he has always been attracted to men but due to the time, he can’t give in his desires so easily. He’s a bookworm and when he finally finds someone who shares the same passion for books as him and also seems interested in him, Laurent doesn’t hesitate and goes for it ignoring that people aren't as nice as they claim to be.

Things don’t go as expected for Laurent and he suddenly finds himself doing a pact with the devil and traveling to 2017 where he meets Beast… I won’t keep saying more of the story because there are several things that you must find out by yourself.

What I will say is that this goes directly to my shelf of favorite books. I was engrossed from beginning to end. The writing was just amazing and they were constantly quoting Inferno from Dante Alighieri and that was definitely a plus for me.

The characters were so well developed and the concept of time travel was well created. Laurent captivated me. More than once I burst laughing so hard because of him that I needed a few minutes to compose myself. His innocent and ignorance of 2017 hovered over the edge of being too funny and too endearing at the same time. Besides, Laurent’s obsession with plastic was my undoing. Tbh, now every time I see my mom’s Tupperware I’ll start hugging them because Laurent made me realized that plastic actually rocks! (and almost everything is made of plastic nowadays, how didn’t I notice that?)

Obviously, I won’t ignore Beast. He also took a part of my heart and made this story so much better because he was so freaking real! His attitude, his fears, his insecurities were so real that took my breath away because I have shamelessly thought the same way as him at one point in my life. Just like Beast with Laurent, I’ve got to resent the person I love even for the most stupid thing, which I’m not proud of. This book reminds me we are humans! We aren’t flawless and we can be mean to others just for all the wrong reasons! Sometimes, he also used to put himself first just for his own sake (just like we sometimes do) and because of that, he ended up doing some stupid shit. Thankfully he knew when to take his head out of his ass and amend things. So yeah, Beast was a reliable character and that made me loved him so much and it helps me to understand where he was coming from.

Also, I adore that Laurent was capable of seeing beyond Beast’s scars and the way these authors made them fall in love was so smooth and natural. It wasn't forced, it was so subtle and well written that you can almost miss the moment they finally fall for each other.

Another plus for me was the creepiness! The whole thing was developed in a building that used to be an asylum! Oh man, you don’t know how much I love story that gives me goose bumps and makes me want to look around to check if I am still alone in the room. Those stories are so worthy! Besides, it was like watching a horror movie. So, so great!

Can’t wait for Knight’s book!

First of all, I have to mention the cover, because it's everything! <3

Beast has been in an accident that's left him disfigured. To cover up the scars, he had pretty much his whole body and face tattoed. But the tattoes don't help his damaged ego and in some regards, they've even made things worse for him because people are dicks and they judge other people by their appearances. Some of those scenes brought me to tears. Because even though Beast looks like...well a "beast", that couldn't be farther from the truth. He is one of the most vulnerable and gentle characters K.A Merikan have ever written. And yet he was fierce and badass when the occasion called for it. This book put me through all the emotions; it made me laugh and it made me cry.

Laurent is an indentured servant from the year 1805. I don't want to give too much away, but, to escape a horrific ordeal, he gets into some shady business and is transported into the year 2017. This is where the story shines. I absolutely loved how the authors protrayed Laurent's cluelessness. The way he was discovering everything we take for granted was amazingly well done. Reading about Laurent discovering our world and comparing it to his really made me want to be able to travle back in time. The way he talked compared to the guys of the MC and some of the comments he made were hilarious. But what really got me, was his unconditional love for plastic :D
Laurent was sweet but in no way was he a weak character. He stood up for himself, he knew what he wanted and he would have done anything to get it. Too bad he didn't count on falling in love with Beast.

Beast and Laurent's relationship starts off rocky and it takes them a while to figure stuff out. The time travel aspect and some misunderstandings because of it get in their way, but in the end, they work it out. The relationship development was slow and they don'thave sex until later in the book but that was perfectly fine. That's not to say that we didn't get any sexy times before that ;) I felt that it was done very realistically. The authors took their time buidling the world of the Kings of Hell series and with it the relationships of the characters and they did it well. I loved Knight, Beast's best friend, and Jake, the sweet prospect and mysterious Gray! I have already mentioned this in my other reviews but K.A Merikan deserve a degree for creating some of the most complex characters out there! Laurent and the Beast was deeply romantic. It also had a gothic feel to it that I really appreciated! There was even a scene, that was so creepy I literally jumped while reading it.

Only these two can pull of a time travel Motorcycle Club romance and make it believable.

I absolutely cannot wait to read about the other characters in the series. Knight's story is gonna be next and boy, I have a feeling it's gonna be goood!

"I’ve never realized love is more valuable than freedom. You are everything to me. Even though we were born centuries apart, I’m sure our souls are entwined"

I have read a few books by this author duo in the past and maybe I had picked the wrong books(smutty ones😂😂) or maybe 3-4 books are not enough to judge an author. I had no clue that they had written something like this too. This book is a unique blend of dark magic/paranormal with time travel and an MC romance. I got so invested in the story of Beast and Laurent that I kept on reading till 3 in the morning. And, even then I had to force myself to sleep.😊

•The story is about Laurent who is a bookkeeper's assistant in 1805 and had time travelled to a motorcycle club in 2017. It was interesting to see his views on things of day-to-day life and his obsession with plastic(is it weird that I wanted someone to tell him about the ill effects of plastic???😂😂) But even though the transition was not perfect, I liked Laurent's childlike enthusiasm about everything new.

• I think this is the first book by these authors where I adore both the MCs. They were from different times and had a completely different understanding of things. They were flawed like Beast, burned, tattooed, damaged, and so emotionally volatile that even the slightest of rejection could cut him deep. And, Laurent is sweet, sassy and smart but also knows how to manipulate things.

• I liked that it was not an easy journey for either one of them. Not a love story where both just fell for each other and everything was rosy again. It was hurt/comfort at the best. There were secrets and misunderstandings between them. Both were dedicated to each other and had the same feelings, still, the issues were there. I also liked the suspicions/doubts that kept on creeping into their minds about each other and shows it takes time to trust.

• I  enjoyed that it was a slow burn (hey, nothing up to 200 pages is a slow burn for this author😁😁). The relationship development was turbulent but it had lots of sweet moments too. Plus, let's not forget the steamy sex scenes in the voice of Joe Leslie🔥🔥🔥

•Normally, I am not a fan of MC romances but I liked it here, mainly from Laurent's POV. He was so genuinely honest in his opinions that I couldn't help but laugh.

• Oh!!! And, I forgot to mention that you will like it more if you are a lover of Dante's, Inferno.

The book is around 360 pages but you will not feel it. Actually, I thought the ending was a bit rushed and wanted a few more pages. And, I think it's a long time since I have read the books of a series in order and back to back😂😂(Charlie Adhara's Big bad wolf) was the last time I did it but I am so intrigued that I wanted to read more books from the series. Although, I am not a superfan of Knight. Yes, he was a loyal friend with an interesting hobby but cocky rakes are not my fav kind of MCs. Still, let's hop on to the next book.

[3.2] the greatest love story of our generation: Laurent and Plastic 🥰

Beast? who the heck is Beast? i don't care how much of a sob backstory a character has, a jerk is still a jerk.

when the first impression of a character is said character throwing a hissy fit because the beautiful time traveler he bought clothes for and fed refuses to sleep with him at the end of their shopping excursion. huh. apparently smiles = leading someone on. this is way too reminiscent of what happens irl and i'm sick of itttttt. someone teach this man what consent is 😑

there are plenty more examples throughout of similarly unwarranted anger/entitlement (that occasionally take a violent turn) which i won't touch upon here, but yeah, if you're looking for an unhealthy dynamic with little reward in the end, this is it!

*update: okay so their cameos in future books are actually pretty sweet, but it's hard to forget their relationship's origins 😅

There's something I need to say about those books by KA Merikan that involve the supernatural:
They go under my skin for sure. But they're not ideal romances....

There is a couple of these biker books that I love A LOT. 'Straight as a Wheel' is probably one of my all time favorite books. I have certainly not read all of them and I don't know if they all take place in the same universe. The ones I've read previously seemed to take place in a universe where magic wasn't on the table.

Laurent and the Beast, however, has supernatural powers in spades.

You certainly guessed already that this is a re-telling of Beauty and the Beast, which is also why I picked it up in the first place. I absolutely LOVE Beauty and the Beast (especially the Disney animated movie) and YES, you will find quite a couple of loving references in several scenes in Laurent and the Beast.

But first things first: The plot.

We start this story in 1805. Young Frenchman Laurent Mercier is working as a bookseller's assistant (or rather slave, if I understand the concept of an 'indentured servant' correctly). He wants nothing more than to lose himself in books and find some romantic excitement in the homophobic era he lives in. Sadly, his failing eyesight is giving him trouble reading and his love life isn't exactly adventurous either.

And then something terrible happens. So terrible in fact that I nearly couldn't get myself through the scenes while it happened.

The conclusion: Laurent gets thrown into the future (2017) with a demonic assignment. He finds himself among a motorcycle club and meets a man - called Beast- who was severely disfigured in a fire. Trying to hide his scars, Beast covered his body and face with tattoos, making his appearance even more frightening.

However, to everyone's surprise, Laurent isn't scared of Beast and goes on a passionate journey of discovering his sexuality with him, while trying to adapt to the new time period he found himself in.

But he does keep a dangerous secret from Beast too. One which might cost a man his life.

It's a pretty thrilling story. The supernatural plot really went under my skin. The deal with 'the devil' was remarkably well portrayed in this story - as were the consequences that come with such a nefarious bargain.

Despite the extensive sex scenes, the story did not work as a romance for me, though.

Laurent's extreme fear of being someone's property bordered on hysteria and resulted in a painful fear of commitment that hurt Beast over and over again, when he tried to put any kind of claim on the man he loved.

A pretty depressing scenario.

All in all, I loved the Beauty and the Beast theme and the supernatural elements. The characters were interesting too (let's maybe mention that the female characters seemed to be painted in a rather old-fashioned way here, as happily being their men's property in some twisted form), but the romance and actually all relationships that were shown in the story, seemed twisted and uncomfortable.

This may or may not be the author's intention, but I feel like I cannot give my highest rating in this case.

3.5 stars!
