Will a Christmas wish give a lonely author a family? A heartwarming story of true love. Mystery writer, Joel Carpenter, has no time for romance. He has a deadline to meet, and too many skeletons in his closet to trust the slightly spinny artist renting his house. Christy Taylor has her hands full dealing with an ailing business and a diabetic daughter, she doesn't need the temptation that is her landlord, Joel Carpenter. Can a Christmas wish bring two stubborn souls together and give a little girl the gift she wants most? If you like Contemporary Romance, Inspirational Romance, Holiday Romance or Women's Fiction, this is sure to be a story you will love.
Jacquie Biggar is an award-winning USA Today bestselling author of romance who loves to write about tough, alpha males and strong, contemporary women willing to show their men that true power comes from love. She lives on Vancouver Island with her husband and loves to hear from readers all over the world! In her own words: “My name is Jacquie Biggar. When I'm not acting like a total klutz, I am a wife, mother of one, grandmother, and a butler to my calico cat. My guilty pleasures are reality tv shows like Amazing Race and The Voice. I can be found every Monday night in my armchair plastered to the television laughing at the judge's shenanigans. I love to hang at the beach with DH (darling hubby) taking pictures or reading romance novels (what else?). I have a slight Tim Hortons obsession, enjoy gardening, everything pink, and talking to my friends.”
SILVER BELLS: A Holiday Romance by Jacquie Biggar is a holiday novella that was sweet and easily read in one sitting curled up on the couch while the weather outside is frightful.
Joel Campbell, award winning mystery writer, has moved from Scotland to Vancover Island. He wants to be closer to his grandmother and hopes the change will get him over his writers’ block. Hating his fame, he has walled off his heart, become gruff and hates anyone interrupting him and yet, he is lonely.
Christy Taylor is an artist who has started her own shop attached to her rented home. Her life cannot be more hectic. She is attempting to grow her clientele, while caring for her small daughter, Jill, who has been diagnosed with Type 1, Juvenile diabetes. Christy is a great mother, but her divorce and her ex's attitude toward their daughter has made her distrustful of any help from any man.
These two need to open up their hearts and learn to trust again before it is too late.
This novella is an enjoyable and quick read. I loved the characters in this short read, but being short, I felt some of the character development was lost. Jill was adorable and her disease was handled extremely well. I also feel this novella was not really a Christmas or holiday story, just a winter setting. That said, still a good heartfelt novella for a cold winter day.
I really enjoyed this novella. It is sweet and joyous.
Joel comes across as a rude alpha male who needs an attitude check. Christy is a struggling artist with a young child with juvenile diabetes.
When they first meet, Joel believes Christy has been following him. She doesn't realize he is a famous novelist and he assumes she is wanting an interview or spying on him. Neither assumptions are correct.
Turns out Joel is the grandson of the woman who watches Jill when Christy needs help. He is also Christy's landlord. Thus, Christy is left in the dark about a lot of things concerning Joel.
Meanwhile, she has put Joel in his place the few times they meet until she puts two and two together. By then her daughter is enjoying the times she meets Joel and Joel's defenses are coming down quickly between the joy of a child brings into his life and the feistiness of Christy. Soon, they are working toward a relationship and Joel is way ahead suddenly thinking about building a family with Christy.
"Silver Bells" is a truly enjoyable, heartwarming novella of building trust, filling your life with happiness, of love and, if Joel, has his way, family and the future.
**This novella features a young child with juvenile diabetes. A cause that is very important to the author, as it is to many. I grew up with a best friend who was diagnosed around age 6 or 7 and even in junior high she would sometimes have a sudden attack of low blood sugar. While her behavior turned funny and childish (unlike the child in this novella), it was still serious enough that she get sugar into her body. She is now a mother of three and is very stable. She has an insulin pump and has for years and that has made a huge difference. As the author states, it can be a life threatening illness. I had a grandmother and uncle who both passed away from late in life complications of their diabetes. While stability can be maintained, it is a life long medical issue that requires continual daily monitoring. I thank the author for bringing this into her novella, as it is also a cause dear to my heart. **
The last thing Joel wants or needs is romance. He’s a bestselling mystery author and he’s under a tight deadline. Plus, the women he’s met lately only want him for his money, moniker, expensive gifts, etc. Everyone wants something, or so Joel thought… until he meets Christy.
Christy has got a full plate: single mom trying to make it a go of it with her art and her diabetic daughter in Vancouver Island. But money is tight and when the landlord comes around the gallery demanding rent, sparks fly between her and Joel. Can she let her guard down to let him in or is he just like her ex and will abandon her when he meets Jill (her daughter)?
I’m a big fan of Biggar and have gobbled up everything she’s written but this story moved me to tears. There’s so much emotion in this little romantic story while dealing with not only the holidays but serious topics like childhood diabetes. Biggar describes perfectly the fear every parent deals with raising a diabetic child (Christy) while at the same time, capturing what the child goes through every single day (Jill).
If you’re a fan of romance and looking for a quick holiday romance, 1-click this book right now. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll be inspired. A must read, in my opinion!
Favorite Character: I instantly connected with Christy. As a single mum and an artist struggling with making ends meet, my heart went out to her. I know quite a few friends like Christy and I wanted to wrap my arms around her.
Favorite Quote:
“Lead with your heart, child. That’s all you can do.”
I pretty much sound like a broken record but I'm a sucker for Christmas stories and have been reading a lot of them lately. The blurb caught my eye but sadly the story didn't meet my expectations. I was expecting a cute holiday romance and I really didn't get that in this story. Christy is a single mother taking care of her young diabetic daughter. Joel is a writer who is a recluse. They meet one day and a few days later she finds out he's the landlord or something. I really didn't get a romantic or holiday vibe while reading this book at all. I couldn't connect or relate to the characters. Maybe if the book was longer I would have? Who knows? I do applaud the author for mentioning juvenile diabetes. I have a friend who has it and my grandmother passed from the disease as well.
A charming novella, this story focuses on Christy and her daughter Jill, a little girl living with the life-threatening Type 1 diabetes. Despite the title I didn't feel that this was a 'Christmas' book specifically... it would have been so easy to have Joel discover that Christy and Jill had no money to celebrate Christmas and have him play Santa for them.
A charmingly written 'sweet' romance, I have to say that the story felt a little thin on character development. The character we got to know best was Jill, who was absolutely adorable, but I didn't feel that there was much time for the romance to develop between Christy and Joel.
Four stars for good writing and especially the attention to medical detail of Jill's illness, but I can't really say that I loved it.
Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book for review through The Romance Reviews.
Silver Bells: A Holiday Romance is a sweet read that makes your heart feel full after reading it. Joel when you first meet him is a jerk he seems arrogant and quite frankly a jerk that really needs to put himself in check. Christy is a sweet single mother with a sick child that has been through so much that she just feels closed off and lost as that's easier than being hurt again. . You not only fall in love with the main characters but you also fall in love with the supporting characters of Jill Christy's daughter and Claire Joels grandmother and Jill's babysitter. This story really gives you heart and will have you turning pages til the end.

Christy is now a single mother taking care of her daughter Jill who has a few medical issues to deal with. She is having a tough time and moves in next door to Claire. Claire is a nice woman who helps Christy out by watching Jill while Christy works. Christy has a store and also is an artist.
She meets this man who is a sort of recluse. He turns out to be her landlord. Will they be able to have a happy ever after. I think you would love this story as much as I did. I couldn't put it down.
Christy Taylor is a single mother raising a daughter, Jill, who is diabetic. When her landlord, Joel, comes to see her to find out why she is late with the rent she realizes she had a run in with him earlier. Joel is an author and he is instantly attracted to Christy's feisty personality. Can Christy find room in her and Jills' life for Joel. This is a quick enjoyable read. * I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Silver Bells by Jacquie Biggar: *** Three Stars Joel Carpenter has moved from Scotland to Victoria, Canada to become a recluse. Since his rise to literary stardom, he has become paranoid after many unscrupulous business and personal relationships. Right now he is dealing with writer’s block, his characters are refusing to follow his direction, and his tenant is having trouble coming up with rent on time.
Christy Taylor is an artist who has set up a small art shop, The Wandering Mind Studio, in the front of her rental property. She is a divorcee with a four-year-old daughter who suffers Type-One Diabetes. She refuses to bow to the adversity of this disease and works hard to raise a happy, well-adjusted child. Jill is a vivacious, cheerful, and active child. Christy has hired an elderly neighbor to sit with Jill while she is working or running errands.
I had a hard time connecting with or liking Joel; he is angry, arrogant, and overbearing to a fault. He lashes out at Christy at inappropriate times repeatedly. It angered me when he kissed her after yelling at her. Here is a quote as he muses about their relationship after he decides he might just like Christy. It sums him up pretty well:
“Living with Christy wouldn’t be easy, she would keep him on his toes each and every day—he pictured her rosy red lips and delectable body pressed close to his—but it would be worth the battle.”
Not very romantic if you ask me. Unfortunately, Christy is smitten with his good looks and I’m afraid her lust is coloring her good senses. Perhaps if the transformation in Joel had been accomplished through dialogue and not narration, I would feel differently? Or perhaps I wasn’t the right reader for this story? Unfortunately, that happens at times.
I came across one word that may be considered borderline offensive to some. Honestly, it made me giggle. The editing was excellent in this novella, nothing at all jumped out at me. Nice job, Ms. Biggars. **Originally written for "BigAl’s Books and Pals" book blog. May have received a free review copy.** November 14, 2016
Christy Taylor has left Alberta for Victoria, BC after her husband had an affair. Looking for a fresh start for herself and her daughter, Jill, who has type 1 diabetes, she is hoping her drawings will sell to earn them enough money to live on.
Joel Carpenter is an author who is needing some inspiration for his next book when he meets a lady who seems to push all of his buttons and gives him ideas for the character in his book. But Joel is also a landlord who's tenant is 2 months behind in rent and his grandma is advocating for him to give his tenant a break.
When Christy and Joel meet tempers flare but is there more than just what is on the outside? Will they each give the other enough of a chance for a friendship or are they headed for disaster? Will Christy be able to stick it out or will she head back to Alberta for her daughter's sake?
This was a great Christmas story on forgiveness and looking beyond the first meeting before making your assumptions about people. At the beginning I definitely was not a fan of Joel but it was partly because I didn't know why he never wanted to be seen in pictures. I gradually warmed up to him but it was definitely partly because of his grandma!
I absolutely loved Claire Michaels!! She was such an angel and I loved how she took care of Jill. I knew that there had to be goodness in Joel just because of her!
I felt so bad for Christy with everything she was faced with. She was a definite trooper and would do anything for Jill - even returning to Alberta. I really hope her gallery takes off and that she is able to make a real go of it! She deserves to be happy!
This is just what you need to get you in the festive mood.A sweet festive read that will get you feeling warm and tingly all over! Its a short read perfect for a Christmas afternoon.I would of loved it to have been longer and with more detail on their lives but for a quick holiday read it hit the spot! Christy is raising her diabetic daughter Jill alone, Christy finds making ends meet hardand her business is struggling.Claire is her neighbour and tries to help Christy out by looking after Jill whenever she needs to work.Joel Carpenter is an author and a total recluse recently moved to Canada hes looking for inspiration and a new outlook on his career hes also Christys landlord and Claires grandson.Claire has been trying to get Joel and Christy together not knowing they’ve met before when he went to her gallery demanding the rent she owes.Sparks flew between them on that first meeting, she thinks hes arrogant but neither can deny what passes between them. Christy has had her fair share of heartache and doesn’t want to be hurt again.Slowly but surely Joel pushes his way past her insecurities and fears,Jill slowly melts his heart and he is thinking of a future with them both. Can they find happiness with each other and have the love and family they all desperately want?
I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
I really felt for little Jill suffering from Type 1 diabetes. If you don't have it, it is hard to realize how hard living with the disease is. Christy has a full plate with being an artist, a child with T1D, divorced from an unfeeling husband and father. Then she meets a prickly man who turns out to be her landlord! Joel is a man on a time crush to deliver his next book. Unfortunately the words just aren't there is time. The characters aren't working for him. He also suffers from all the publicity surrounding his fame and it is getting to him. He sees Christy drawing and sparks fly.
This story is quick. Yes, it is a novella and can be read in one short sitting. The story flowing and before you know it, it is over. The characters were great as well as the plot. Yes, it would have been nice if the story was longer and filled with more detail but as works just as well as a novella. It will get you a much needed break at lunch time or riding the bus or just right before bed when you want to relax.
Neither Joel nor Christy are looking for love. Christy just wants a better life for her daughter and herself. Joel wants a tenant that will pay on time and for the plot on his next book to cooperate. Joel’s mom wants him to be happy. All the threads come together HEA.
I had the privilege of reading Silver Bells and loved it! Single mom Christy Taylor was only trying to do her job when famous author Joel Carpenter grabbed her drawing pad from her hands and threatened her to stay away from him on their first meeting. Christy had no idea who he was or even cared she was just getting a few more drawings finished for her gift shop that she rented under her upstairs apartment. She was finding it difficult making a living while caring for her daughter who had recently been diagnosed with diabetes. Joel Carpenter was frustrated by his writer's block, tenant who he had yet to meet and was late with rent and the young woman that he confronted drawing his picture at the beach. When Joel and Christy meet again and have a better understanding of each other's situation they soon form a bond while spending time together caring for Christy's daughter. They had not gone in to the relationship looking for a family, but one soon developed.
I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
Christy is a single mum and an artist, she combines caring for her daughter and trying to run a business. Her daughter has a serious form of Diabetes and this means she is constantly on a balancing act. She has some help from a retired lady who understands her daughter's condition and helps her care for her daughter.
Joel is on a writing deadline and needs to get his book written soon, while taking some time out he spots a woman watching him and doesn't react well - this is their first meeting, not the best of starts!
Christy and Joel make a cute couple with Jill (the daughter) added into the story. With likeable characthers and Christmas nearing in the story it makes an enjoyable short read, its only 60 pages but will leave you with a smile on your face.
so what happens when a mom and her daughter meet a man who is related to a woman who has been there for them and like a mother to the one with a child and a grandma type for the child . also what happens when the woman meets said man and only later to find he is their landlord and the grandson of the woman who has become a part of the family , can these two find common ground or will one or the other run from what is right in front of them . find out by buying this story you wont want to put it down as i did not put it down . it can get a little sad so if you get emotional with stories that can make you cry then maybe either not read it or ensure you have a kleenox box right beside you . over all i would read this story over and over again as i would all the various stories i have read over the years .
“Silver Bells” is a quick holiday read I finished in one night! Christie and her daughter. Kelly, move to a coastal town in Canada to start over. I love the relationship between Christie and her daughter while they handle Kelly’s diabetes. That adds another dimension to the story along with the new friend who helps with the daughter. The setting is charming, and I love that Christie’s an artist, but it’s the meeting of Joel, the novelist, and Christie that propel the story forward. At first, I didn’t like Joel on any level, but Christie’s attraction was strong and immediate. Then, as Joel steps outside of himself, with the help of his grandmother, I warmed up to him and their interactions. The relationship that develops between Joel and Kelly is endearing. This a fun read by the Christmas tree, but it could be for any time of the year.
https://mjmallon.com/2020/12/22/m-js-... A quick and enjoyable novella to read at Christmas time. It's my introduction to Jacquie Biggar being the first I've read of her collection. I'm sure I will read more. A nice warm-hearted tale with mention of a single mother's worries about her young daughter's diabetes giving the tale a deeper aspect to it. The romance between writer Joel and artist Christy is swift - perhaps a little quick for my taste - but this may just be the short format of a novella pushing the story to a quicker resolution. Lots of enticing descriptions and delectably kissable moments to make up for any slight shortcomings.
Sweet, fun and very entertaining. Love stories were children play an important role and were real life subjects are approached. Main and supporting characters are easy to follow and like, as well as the storyline.
Christy hasn't been dealt the best hand lately. Not only was her sweet daughter diagnosed with diabetes, but she also had to deal with a divorce. Now she has to embrace the joys and difficulties of single parenting in a new place. Joel is a best seller author with a deadline to meet and a block to overcome. Add to that a new tenant go deal with and his stress level is through the roof. When they meet, sparks fly. Will they apprehension and past prevent them from a bright future?
This is my first book by Jacquie Biggar and it was a sweet clean romance, being a short novella you certainly got the whole story though I would love to know more back story on the characters.
Christy has her hands full, looking after her diabetic daughter and struggling with keeping her business afloat so the last thing she needs is a landlord from hell.
Joel is a writer and pretty much not a people person, when he has a run in with a woman on the beach for drawing his picture, little did he know she was his tenant or that she was about to change his world!
This sweet and and Joel was frustrating at times but it was such a good little story to want your heart for this xmas season.
I loved this book. This was a sweet clean romance with quickly resolved conflict. Christy and Joel have more in common than they think they do. Small world. Jill is the cutest little girl and Claire is the best substitute grandma ever. No spoilers here - I highly recommend. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I have read all of her Wounded Hearts Series and loved them and this book is as good as if not better.
I received a free ARC and am voluntarily writing an honest review.
Christy is a single mom struggling to raise her diabetic daughter and make ends meet. Joel is a reclusive best-selling author who also happens to be her landlord. Their first meeting is less than friendly, however Joel soon finds himself unable to forget his feisty tenant. Will Christy and Joel find their happily ever after? A sweet, heartwarming book just in time for the holidays!
Silver bells. This was a sweet book. I enjoyed this book a lot. It was a heart warming story of a woman and her daughter struggling to make ends meet because of the little girl's illness. Christy finds out her landlord is an arrogant man that takes an interest in her and her daughter. He eventually warms his way into Christy's heart and she let's him in. I received a copy of the book from the author or publisher in exchange for my honest opinion or review of the book.
Silver Bells is a sweet quick Christmas novella. I love stories like this even though it's a fast read it just warms your heart and makes you believe anything is possible during Christmas time. Joel is a grumpy author who is stuck until Chrissy enters his life. Chrissy is a single mother just trying to make it. Fate keeps pushing them together until they finally surrender. Truly a lovely Christmas story.
This story is a story of cat and mouse between the two characters until the end and leaves you guessing at each turn of the page what will happen next. Although it's got the name silver bells there isn't much to do with Christmas except for the mention of the song silver bells and Christmas coming soon a few times so it's not your usual Christmas holiday read but it's still a nice little read that passes the time.
Reviewed for Amo and Sarah book corner gifted for an honest review.
Silver Bells is a romantic, Christmas story of a lost soul wishing for a family to love and a divorced mother with a daughter who had Type I diabetes. The characters are both creative and stubborn which makes for some interesting dialogue. It is enjoyable to see that the chemistry between them baffles and scares them. It is a nice, clean romance that will touch your heart. I received a copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
Joel moving closer to his grandmother, was a writer, hating to be invaded by people, and having a deadline, so has closed himself off. Christy focus is on her daughter and keeping her well, and her business. A marriage that failed, she has shut herself off, and feeling she doesn’t have the time. A good family story of two people and a little girl that need to open up and except the love that is around them.
I was asked by the author for an honest review. This book was really cute. I would have given it a 5 had it been longer. I wanted more. The characters are well developed and the story line was great. I just wanted more it ended to fast and I wanted to know a little more but overall this was a great book and I strongly recommend it!
Silver Bells was a great read. It was a fast and easy read. Perfect book to read at Christmas. This is a sweet Christmas story of two people who are not looking for love but find it in each other. This book was a feel good book. **I was given this book to read and review for my honest opinion by How Box Reviews**
