Sanji has fallen into a trap laid by his despicable family, but will he go through with the forced political marriage they have arranged for him? And on Whole Cake Island, Luffy and his crew face off against some of Big Mom’s strongest warriors.
Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

No joking, I guessed Lola's mother was an Emperor even way back when she first gave up the card. We didn't even know Big Mom's name back then, or that one of the Emperors would be a woman, or a mother. I also wondered how she'd be so sure that her mother would be helpful, and as more was revealed of said mother, I wondered all the more. Well, now we know. Turns out she wouldn't be.
Great fight with Cracker. Followed by a great show of force from the Emperor - barring Marineford, Luffy's never been this out of depth before, and it's made pretty well clear. Probably couldn't have done too much better even without the beating Sanji handed him.
Speaking of which, there's also quite a bit of Enies Lobby retread, but I like Sanji and I don't mind him getting some spotlight, so that's nice. Still feel like he could've found a better way to get through it instead of just going along with it, though.
Chapters 339 'I shall never forget the debt I owe to you' - 348 'Goodbye'
Eugh Sanji's family are all horrible! I hope they get taken down a few pegs. Sanji is definitely not a failure! Brook made it into Big Mom's treasure room hopefully he'll get back out in tact. Pudding is so too faced and evil! Someone please rescue Nami and Luffy from prison!
WHOLE CAKE ISLAND ARC - PART 2 1. i'm so into sanji in this arc, it's unreal
2. the vinsmoke kids are standing in following line: 0 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 4. why? why is 2 before 1? either way, poor sanji T_T the way he grew up, being a 'mere' human, even though he is miles upon miles above the ordinary person. the way he was caged in around his head and imprisoned. he is only a child :(
3. SANJI. MY HEART HURTS, WHY WOULD YOU SAY THE THING WITH THE INFERIOR PIRATES TO LUFFY IM CRYING NOOOOO THIS IS THE SAME SHIT THAT HAPPENED WITH ROBIN COME ONNNNNNNNNN he defended you that you wouldn't ever speak to them like that :((((
4. the glare leveled at nami - holy shit. sanji must be HURTING inside and so determined to protect them. my heart, oh my god i am so excited for this arc ooooooo my fucikng god
5. i am actually so hurt by this fight between luffy and sanji. holy fuck, this is ripping my heart out. luffy not fighting back because he knows every kick from sanji's hurts him more than it does luffy, luffy refusing to eat anybody's food - "without you, i can't become the king of the pirates" - I AM BAWLINGGGGG THE MUSIC IN THAT SCENE WAS FUCKING MESSING WITH ME TOO
It starts off with Sanjis origin and how he was treated so poorly by his own peers and shamed by his father and his escape and the story we know, In the present day they threaten his adopted father and so Sanji for that has to fight Luffy and its one of the most emotional moments in the series with Luffy especially not giving up on Sanji despite that and the coming of forces of Big Mom to fight Luffy again and its gonna be epic to see how he gets out of that now imprisoned in a book meanwhile in another place the rest of the crew fight. Its a really good volume with such heavy emotional overtones and like change in status of friendship even, Oda bringing home the factor into this one that makes One Piece the best,
I would pass on lunch too if it sang a musical number to me. I prefer my food not to sing.
Also, the GROWTH omg the way Luffy tried to handle Sanji’s alleged departure vs how he handled Ussop’s back in the Water 7 arc...incredible! He’s acting more and more like a proper captain everyday!
I'm really enjoying this ark so far. It's a nice change from the two previous ones where the main goal was saving some annoying pink-haired-half-naked-whiny princesses (okay, Rebecca was a bit less of a pain than Shirahoshi, but still...). I've read some reviews and it seems it's compared a lot to the Marineford ark, personally it reminds me more of Water Seven on the stakes. And no matter how absolutely amazing Marineford was, I really hope it doesn't get down the same path (my poor feelings are still a wreck T_T). I really like that we're getting more insight on Sanji's past (so sad, but Oda is incredible on his character's backstories) and that he seems to evolve a bit and stop swooning over every damn girl he meets, that it is more focused on his relationship with his horrible and inhuman family, and his relationship with the crew... And I mean, that chapter with Luffy... I really hope we get more of the two's friendship. Though the stakes here seem quite complicated to solve at that point... This got me guessing about that wedding Shanks and his crew are attending... Could it be Lola with one of Shanks' man? I don't know, it could provide a path to get everyone out of that mess... Maybe. Plus you never know where Oda's going to get with his story next, so I guess we'll have to wait and see. Anyway, glad the story is picking up and that we got a bit more answers in the previous tomes about some of the mysteries of the One Piece universe! And also glad for a truly emotional and complex new ark!
Last year I promised to read all of the volumes of One Piece in celebration of chapter 1000 coming out. I could not keep my end of the bargain. I got burned out sometime in April or July; I would have to check.
So now, here we return to volume 84. Sanji is getting married, and his family loathes him. His sister, Reiju, is the one who allowed him to escape originally, so she isn't all that bad. We see some backstory, and Sanji's is one of the saddest.
Luffy and Sanji fight, Luffy swears to go on a hunger strike and starve if Sanji doesn't return. Luffy and Nami get captured and thrown in a Magic Book. It appears as though the Wedding will happen, but what trick does Luffy have up his sleeve? Tune in next time for Volume 85 of One Piece.
Thanks for reading my review, and see you next time.
Sanji's past is so heartbreaking. I really thought that his childhood in East Blue is already sad, and I didn't expect Oda to still be hiding a trump card of Sanji's backstory!! Also, when I was reading the fight scene of Sanji and Luffy I didn't notice that tears were already falling down my cheeks!! Such a heart wrenching scene!!!!
Aaah !
