I read this book a while ago, but did not want to review it till after it was out and people... ITS NOW OUT.

This is a stunning sequel to New World Rising, a novel that took my breath away on so many levels. Filled with action, suspense and intrigue this dystopian world is truly amazing. It is unlike anything I have read before but is by far my new favourite dystopian series. I recommend you all check it out!

Whereas new world: rising had this dark gritty feel to it, new world: Ashes is a ball of bright white light in comparison...and yes, that's partially due the stark white settings of the sanctuary, picking up where we left off in book 1.

The first chapter packed a punch and set the tone of the book very nicely, introducing the formidable, hatable character of The Minister and not least because of his connection with Phoenix.

As in many ways with a lot of book 2's it's a lot of set up for book three but also gives you a chance to build on the world your creating, bring in new characters and build up their pasts and this was great for that as you got to learn a lot about phoenix's back story, whilst her current story pushed forward at a relentless pace. No rest for the wicked as they say.

The whole thing feels very cinematographic, there a a really good balance of plot, action, character interaction that creates an excellent pace so that I was drawn in and didn't let up.until I had finished reading. At points I was exclaiming on the train when I thought certain things had or were happening...and you have to take that moment to let out that breath.

Phoenix is very determined character, a little broken, a little vulnerable (much more so here) but with a strength in her. We also get to see developments in other personalities like Trivens which I really enjoyed. And mouse...what else can I say that I haven't already. I love mouse...such a sweet character you just want to pick her up and hug her each time! I'm getting quite protective of her...so if you fo anything to her in book three there will be more than one rising!!

It was good to be in the sanctuary, as with a lot of dystopian bases it was very simple...white, and you had a good sense if it without it having to be spoon fed to you. That or my imagination is still very active.

This was a very strong sequel and I have a high level of anticipation for book 3!! Definitely check this series out, I'm so glad that I found it!!

I don’t even know where to start – what a BRILLIANT sequel! After the cliffhanger in New World Rising, I immediately picked this one up. From page one, it hooked me. It was dark, gritty, emotional, action-packed, and just all around incredible. One of my new favorite dystopian series, by far.

Let’s start with how incredible the character development was. We see a whole new side of Phoenix – where she gives herself up to save those she loves and then struggles to survive. As much as I loved this book, the first 100 pages were tough and fiercely emotional because of how much I love Phoenix and all that she had to go through. We were introduced to some new (and horrifying) villains and I HATE them. The Minister and Gage are both terrifying—I want nothing more than to see them gone forever. But that’s a good thing! It kept me reading—I simply needed to know what was going to happen next. Phoenix struggled for a large chunk of this book with who she was and how to cope with what she’s been through. Despite that, I never found her annoying or whiney. For that, I give Jennifer Wilson so much credit.

And then we have TRIVEN. I love him and his protectiveness. He knows exactly what Phoenix needs before she even knows what she needs and I adore him for it. Mouse is just as fierce and lovable as the first book—bringing a sense of morality and humanity to the cast and the world as a whole. And the addition of Ryker really added depth—I love him! He’s made a lot of poor choices, but he is incredibly loyal and willing to do the tough things for the sake of the greater good.

The other really great part about this book is the world building. We learn a lot more about both Tartarus as well as The Sanctuary but mostly, we get a lot of insight into Phoenix’s past. As she learns where she came from, so do we. The pacing of this book keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time and the ending will leave you dying for the conclusion to this epic story. I can’t recommend New World Rising and New World Ashes enough!

New World series is definitely one of the best dystopia reads that I've come across in a long time!
It was fast paced and interesting. I loved the writing and the characters were awesome.
I really liked the first book but Ashes is insane. I couldn't put this boo down and I would stay up late at night so I could find out what would happen next. I normally don't like sequels as much as the first book but Ashes has blown me away. It's just as good if not better than Rising. I loved the plot and the character development.
Overall, I highly recommend picking this series up. It's amazing and one of my favorite series' of 2015 for sure! If you're looking for a new YA dystopia series, this series is perfect.

It is the day after I read this book and the euphoria after reading this is still within me. I’ve tried to type up a proper review (this will be my 4th attempt) but I just can’t because FEELINGSSS. So instead, I’ll write the top 5 reasons why you need this freaking amazing book in your life.

FIVE REASONS WHY YOU NEED TO STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND READ NEW WORLD: ASHES (That was a mouthful. Heh)

1. First book was UHH-MAAAY-ZIIIING! This is the second book in the New World trilogy so you have to read New World: Rising first before reading this beauty because duh, the first book was just as good as this one. You surely won’t regret it! So go buy your copy and read the first book first and then go back here so we can discuss the gloriousness of this sequel.

2. Villains Surprise I included that? Haha. The villains in this book ignited so much hate from me. Seriously. If I can just kill fictional characters, I already did that. I want to strangle them. Wring their necks. Torture them. Majority of the book was me thinking several ways on how to kill the villains in this book. And I’m saying that in a positive way because if a book incited so many emotions within you then that means the author did a good job in creating them. So job well done, Jennifer Wilson! Fandrin and Gage just made it into my most hateful book villains list. Hahaha. :D

3. Pacing I couldn’t relax while reading this book. Honestly. It has a fantastic pacing that you don’t want to even blink your eyes because you don’t want to miss anything.

4. Action This is even better than watching an action film. Every scene was well-plotted and so thrilling. When I was reading this book, it felt like every scene was real. Every time the characters sneaked out, my heart would pump so fast because I felt like I’m with them.

5. Romance SO MUCH FEELS!!!!!!!!!!! I CAN’T EVEN. WHAT IS LIFE. WHAT IS AIR. TRIVEN, GIVE ME BACK MY HEART.

There’s a lot more things this book can offer you, but those 5 things I listed were the ones that made me love this book so much. New World: Ashes was even better than the first, and considering how I loved New World: Rising, that says a lot. I can’t wait to read the next book!

The sequel to New World: Rising picked off right where the first book had ended, and it kept it's fast pacing and gripping storyline. I quite enjoyed this second book in the New World trilogy! There was one big issue I had with it though.

The book managed to keep me engaged at all time and it was a fast and exciting read. There were action scenes, new characters and mysteries to uncover about Phoenix' past. The writing was fluent and I enjoyed that for once, we have a ya dystopian that's NOT written in the present tense - no, it's written in past tense and that was a nice change. (I don't have a problem with 1st person present, but it seems like almost all ya dystopians are written that way.) There were some revelations I didn't see coming and at some points, it was surprisingly brutal for a ya (think torture and child fights).

Phoenix is a very strong MC. She already was in the first book and in this one, it showed again. Not only is she a good fighter, she also has a strong mind and refuses to let others break her. While I love a kickass heroine, sometimes it was a bit too much. Like how can a 17-year-old girl (even if she grew up under rough circumstances) be a better fighter than a bunch of trained soldiers? But well, I could deal with that.
Triven was nice and I really liked them together, and again I loved little Mouse. I love seeing children as main characters (or important characters), and she's just so cute and strong as well!
There were some new characters in this one, the most important one being Ryker. I don't know what to think of him. The more you get into the book, the more you find out about him, which is a good thing, but still...he's well written, but not especially likeable.

The only point I really disliked about that book was how much it reminded me of Mockingjay. Sure, you might say that almost every ya dystopia is like The Hunger Games in some ways, but in Ashes, the similarities were too much to overlook. I'm not saying the entire book is a rip off (it's not!), but the parallels were too much for my liking. The brewing rebellion that the MC didn't know about? The MC being the face of the rebellion against her will? Her being asked to complete some dangerous yet important task for the rebels? Sound familiar? Yep, that's what I thought.

So in the end, New World: Ashes was a very good book that I liked and I'm excited for the sequel (what was that ending? You give us a big reunion and them leave us hanging? Argh), but I can't rate it higher than 4 stars because of the similarities to Mockingjay. I still recommend this trilogy for all those who are looking for an engaging and fast paced read and who can't seem to let go of the "good old dystopia".

OMG THAT ENDING!!

(I'm sorry if there are any grammatical mistakes etc. because English is not my first language!)

First to the characters: The characters in this book do not seem flat but with many facets like real humans; especially Phoenix and Mouse stood out to me!

Phoenix: She is a stubborn and strong character, which fits perfectly to her way of thinking and behaving in certain situations. I love her evolution from book one to book two: She was lonely and only cared for herself to survive in the first book and now she feels responsible for the ones she loves and wants to protect them. Her inner conflict with that topic is also very well done!

Triven: He is a patient, trustworthy and determined character who is born to be a leader- most importantly because he first thinks and then acts. Another great attribute of him is to treat everyone around him with respect, which I really liked. However, I did not like him as much as Phoenix or the next character I am going to present ( I don't know why!).

Mouse: Awww I don't know where to begin! She is the cutest character I have ever read about! She is another character full of facets: On the one hand there is this cute little girl with her childish behaviours like wide eyes or grasping someones hand and on the other hand you have this mature girl who has seen cruel things and is stubborn but also determined to help in every way she possibly can. Despite her certain hindrance she interacts with everyone perfectly. Mouse is by far my favourite character of this series!

Moving on to the author, Jennifer Wilson: She is an amazing writer with very creative and phenomenal ideas! I could always imagine the places or situations in my head which she described in both New World Rising and New World Ashes. Additionally, her books are not only gripping and action-packed but they hit you right in the feels at the same time! I could definitely laugh, cry and be scared with the characters while reading these books.

And now this massive cliffhanger at the end! Throughout the whole book I was sucked into the story, so I just flew through the pages and then there was this last page when it ended and I thought:"NO! This cannot be the end...Maybe some pages are missing?". But no, this was not the case. It was really the end and I was shocked and left there with a hanging open mouth (but in a good way!:D). Although cliffhangers are not good for our heart and we all hate them, Jennifer Wilson writes the best and most shocking ones.

Conclusion: All in all, both books are a solid 5 stars read to me and I cannot wait to get my hands on the great finale of this trilogy! The New World trilogy is definitely my favourite trilogy that I have ever read!

If you like dystopia just like me- what are you waiting for?! Get yourself a copy of NWR and NWA and read them because you won't regret it!

Jennifer Wilson has done it again! She managed to decimate my heart, then piece it back together again. ASHES picks up where RISING left off, with our scrappy heroine Phoenix in the clutches of The Sanctuary. In order to survive and protect those she loves, she must endure physical and psychological torture at the hands of The Minister. In the pages of ASHES, Wilson takes us on a harrowing journey through her unique dystopian universe. We see it all through the eyes of a young woman who has been pushed to the very edge and is clinging to sanity by her fingernails. We feel everything she feels. Hate. Love. Fear. Rage. Desire. Loneliness. Hope. Phoenix is the epitome of humanity. She is everything one could want in a hero. I cannot wait to dive back into her story in INFERNO. Thank you, Jennifer, for a dizzyingly beautiful and utterly devastating book!

Was more of a 4.5 star rating until things heated up a lot more towards the end, definitely my favourite series. The first one will always have first place in my heart but I still loved this one! I'm now off to buy the third book so I can find out what happens!!

New World: Ashes 3.5/5 Stars

Ashes picks up immediately after Rising, with Phoenix and her friends in desperate and dangerous circumstances. AND….that’s about all you’ll get from me on a synopsis because I don’t want to spoil anything in Rising for you. Haha.

I have to say, the first 70 pages of Ashes were emotionally difficult for me. There is a lot of violence, things that will infuriate you, and wave after wave of bleak circumstances. If you’re like me and have difficulty with reading like that, with almost zero relief, I’m going to tell you to just push through. Your relief comes soon after and those 70 pages will really charge the remainder of the book.

I had the same love/hate relationship with Ashes that I had with the Divergent and parts of Mockingjay. The story is engaging, high tension, and fast moving… but the heroine, in my very personal opinion, often has an impossible personality. Phoenix (our protagonist) has a steadily changing character arc, so I’m very much looking forward to what she’s like in the final book. I was willing to be infuriated by her because I’m interested to see what changes are coming with the impending showdown. There is also still a lot of mystery surrounding Phoenix, and I’m very curious as to how all the puzzle pieces come together in the final book.

The New World series follows closely with dystopian storylines you’ve probably read before, but it’s grittier and more edgy.

Rating 4.5 stars

New World: Ashes by Jennifer Wilson is the second book in the New World trilogy. I often find that middle books drag a bit, like they're filler books. But that definitely wasn't the case with this book. It was just as exciting and action packed as the first book.

This book follows on from the first with Phoenix being held captive in The Sanctuary by the formidable Minister. The Minister is a really evil man! He tortures people, and has kids fighting against each other to be part of his army...I definitely hated him! There is quite a lot of character development for Phoenix in New World: Ashes, at first she's a bit broken, a lot more vulnerable than she was in the previous book. And we also get to know more of her backstory before her life living with the tribes.

There was a lot more world building, quite a few new characters, and a bigger focus on the rebellion movement...it definitely set the scene for a great final book in this trilogy. I'm excited to see how this ends.

I absolutely loved this series! It's really fast paced (so don't start it if you actually have to study, haha) and I really need to know what's going to happen next (we need to wait a year for that.. sigh :p). I loved all of the (well some more than others, obviously) and so shocked all the time!

The only two reasons why I can't give this series 5 stars is because 1. The girl falls in love with the instructor (as we have seen in so many dystopians already, so I would have loved to see a turn on that one) and I don't think it's re-readable because that would give away the whole action and shocking parts and those are the two things that made those two books a great and awesome dystopian series.

This installment was a little slower than the previous one, but this series still continues to be one of my favorite YA dystopians. I enjoyed the character development and Triven and Phoenix are growing on me more. I continue to love the writing style. Jennifer Wilson definitely has a way with words. This book served as a way to build up to what I've been wanting from the begining. I'm so excited to finish this series!!

4.5 stars! While I did like the first book more this one had a lot more plot building and setting up for the final book.
WHICH SHIT IS GONNA HIT THE FAN FOR. HOLY COW. I DON'T KNOW IF MY BODY IS READY.

Also Phoenix/Prea is still the biggest and toughest badass out there and deserves 5 stars for herself as a character.
She is ridiculously well written. Omg. I have all the feels.

The mind is a dangerous place. When left alone too long with our own inner demons, we can easily fall prey to their deception.

It's not that I think this book is bad, I'm just not in the mood right now. But I will definitely be picking this book back up someday, in the near future (I hope).

Edition: e-ARC

Pages: 307

Series or Standalone: Series, New World #2

Published: June 7th, 2016

Publisher: Of Tomes

Goodreads Synopsis: "After Phoenix, a 17-year-old orphan rogue, sacrifices herself for her loved ones, her world again takes an unexpected turn. She may have forgotten her past, but it hasn’t forgotten her. A war is coming and her role in it will be pivotal.

That is... if she survives.

“The much-anticipated sequel to New World: Rising.” "

Plot: 4/5 Hot Aliens

It takes off almost right where the first book ends, which is...... intense. The plot then progressed onward and grrrrrr I want to tell you all everything but you guys know me, and I find everything to be a spoiler. I just don't want to say something that will spoil it for someone. Just know that the plot takes off in this book and it keeps you enthralled.

There were a few things I wasn't a fan of. I felt like the beginning was rushed. It might have just been me though. I guessed most of the surprises, but that didn't bother me too much since I was able to guess a ton of plot points in book one. I really just need to stop thinking I'll be surprised by books since I rarely am ever.

Characters 4/5 Hot Aliens

I loved the characters as much as I did in the first book, if not more.

Phoenix developed even more. Grr I want to talk about how well written she was in this book, but I guess I can't since you know, that's 100% spoilers.

Triven. Oh Triven. I really like him, but at the same time he annoys me. I'm actually not even sure why since I like his character.

Mouse is such a cute, little tough button. She's so strong. She's also maybe my favorite character.

Notes: These may make zero sense to you, but read the book and I'm sure you'll figure out where I said these.

Dun dun dun - 5%

Why isn't this word used more? - 31% vendetta. I feel like it would be useful in so many books.

Current issues in the world today? - 41%

Ham ham ham ham ham ham ham - 51% She wrote "right hand man", I fangirled.

Then I wrote "called it" a few times which I will not be revealing the percentages I was at. Plus, they were scattered so I hope that helps you in trying to find out :)

So at the end, it had the title of the next book and I was like: yessssss

Overall: I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait for the next novel!

4/5 Hot Aliens

Xx Sincerely,

Anna

New World Ashes, like New World Rising, was a mind blowing, action packed dystopian book. But unlike, New World Rising, it wasn't set in the dark gritty alleys of the horrific and dystopian Tartarus. In this book, we go beyond The Wall to The Sanctuary, aka Utopia. Jennifer's ideas are so creative and unique, painting beautiful strokes of the perfect plot. New World Ashes started off with blissfully painful writing and ended with a banging cliff hanger. Jennifer did a wonderful job picking up the book from where she left it. Needless to say, this book DID NOT have the second book slump. In fact, I liked it better than New World Rising. Reading this book, I could really feel Jennifer's writing evolve with each sentence. What's more beautiful is that Jennifer explores all sorts of human emotions in a dystopian book. The first 70 pages or so were so dark, were filled with pain and were completely devoid of happiness. But as the book proceeds, so do these emotions. Moreover, the new characters were absolutely gripping! New World Ashes is an action packed, dystopian tale with the juiciest plot line and the bravest of characters!

I’ll admit I wasn’t a massive fan of the first book in this trilogy, however I’m happy to say that New World Ashes turned out to be quite a nice surprise.

Like with the first book, it’s still very much full of all the typical YA dystopian clichés, but once you look past that, it’s actually quite gripping.

I like all the characters, I think the world-building is interesting and, so far, it’s turning out to be a fairly decent trilogy.

Looking forward to reading the final book.
