Rate this book
A breezy, sexy contemporary YA about falling in love with your best friend, from Wattpad phenom Sarah White.

Mackenzie Clark has been best friends with Nolan Walker for as long as she can remember. She’s shared everything with him, from adventures with their families and days lounging at the beach to long talks about their friends and her journey with type 1 diabetes. The only thing she hasn’t shared is the fact that she is in love with him.

Now in their senior year of high school, Mackenzie and Nolan know that in a few short months everything will change as they head off to different colleges. Determined to make the most of the time they still have left, they come up with a list of things they want to do together before graduation.

But as they make their way through everything from toilet papering the school bully’s house to having a backyard camp-out like the ones they had when they were kids, Mackenzie can’t help feeling that she’s left the most important thing off the telling Nolan how she feels.

Confessing her love could jeopardize the incredible relationship they already have. Is honesty really the best policy?

I am such trash for these friends-to-more books, and White wrote one, which I am adding to my favorites list. I think I wore some sort of sappy grin the entire time I read this book. I loved it so much, I am going to get corny, and list the ways.

1. The friendship between Mackenzie and Nolan was beautiful. They were neighbors and life-long friends. Not only were they friends, but their parents were friends, like the kind of friends you go on vacation with friends. I was so enamored with this whole big-happy-family vibe.

2. Mackenzie had type 1 diabetes, and I thought White did a fine job illustrating her struggles and concerns for us. I shared Zie's frustrations, and probably loved Nolan even more, because of how educated his was about Mackenzie's disease.

3. Seriously! The unrequited love thing made me shed some tears. I got really emotional when Zie had to watch Nolan with other girls. The fact that I ached so much for her, made me think that the single POV was a sort of brilliant choice. Since we were only in Mackenzie's head, we had no idea what Nolan was thinking or feeling unless he told Zie, and that kept the tension high for me.

4. These lists are mentioned over the course of the book, and I was sort of sad that we only got to see three of them, because the ones I saw were so fun and wonderful. I love, love, LOVED the whole relive old memories and make new ones list. It was only five items, but it was a fantastic way for them to revisit some special moments and make a few new ones before they went their separate ways. And that last list!!! *happy tears*

5. I read lots of books with romance, but this here, this was a full-fledged romance. Romances are my thing, and this one was so sweet and adorable and wonderful. I was so glad I got to be a part of this little love story.

I have a tendency to rate a book based on how they made me feel, and this one left me filled to the brim with happiness. It was fun, sweet, delightful, touching, and a whole lot of other warm and fuzzy type adjectives. I adored these two so much, and would love to revisit them in college.

As a T1D myself, I was pleased to follow the (REALISTIC) story of a young woman with the same medical condition. While this is definitely a romance (think friends to lovers, but on a teen scale) I have to admit that the T1 moments were the most engaging for me. Sarah did such a lovely job of weaving Mackenzie's everyday medical concerns with her everyday life. It was refreshing.

This is a sweet story about love and friendship. It's not the best contemporary in the world (not even close honestly) but I enjoyed it. I think it would've been better if there had been more action. Not much happens except Mackenzie and Nolan hanging out while trying to navigate their feelings, which was entertaining but, at the same time, it makes the book forgettable.

I would recommend it if you're looking for a quick, cute read. This is exactly that!

This was almost laughable, but not in a good way. These main characters (who are "supposedly" best friends and nothing more) have to be the most oblivious, doltish characters ever written. It's so clear to the reader and all of the other characters that they are head-over-heels in love with each other and they spend 99% of the book playing this back-and-forth game of "I should tell him...but I can't. We're just friends." Their friendship is also a bit peculiar - they hold hands, mount each other and call it "tickling" and Zie literally dresses Nolan when he has an injured shoulder. Can anyone say "sexual tension?"

Zie also has Type 1 Diabetes. Others have mentioned the representation is spot on, which is great, but Nolan is always there to offer a piece of candy or piggyback ride and catches her when she falls. It was almost to the point where she wouldn't have survived without him and he always got to be the hero swooping in to save the day.

After all this building and building and back-and-forth of will they or won't they, the ending is over and neatly tied up within a matter of pages. I couldn't tear myself away from this, so there's that, but then I was left feeling cheated and disappointed.

I'm torn over this because I know teens out there secretly harboring crushes on their friends will eat this up, but I can't get over how awkward some of it was. If you can forgive the characters for being mildly inappropriate, this is a quick, easy read that's mostly entertaining - good and bad.

"I'd have to let him go so I could watch him be happy with someone else without hurting inside."

Let Me List the Ways by Sarah White is in true fashion a friends to lovers book. It is a contemporary where the main character is also dealing with diabetes. Her best friend Nolan has always been there since she could remember. Since that day in 4th grade when she found out that she had diabetes. It has been perfect for them and neither wants anything to change.

Let Me List the Ways is predictable but sometimes with that it's like enjoying something you know has a good ending. I like predictable sometimes because its just easy to pick up.

"You know you're with the right person when you want them to be happy even if what it takes to make them happy makes you unhappy."

I think this book is really important in educating people who do not have diabetes. It lets us step into the shoes of Zie the main character who has been living with it since fourth grade. The YA romance was really just a bonus.

As a type 1 diabetic, I don’t see representation of myself in media very often or very accurately. I picked up this book because the main character is diabetic too and the parts of the book that talked about it were accurate and well done. I think this is an important book solely for that reason. However, I wasn’t crazy about the writing or the story itself even. The writing was very simplistic and basic and there was a lot more telling than showing. I think the book could have been fleshed out a lot more just by expanding short paragraphs that brushed over things into whole chapters. The characters were also very 2 dimensional and there wasn’t really a difference between any of Mackenzie or Nolan’s friends and family members. None of the characters felt like they had any real traits or personalities and the main characters barely had anything romantic between them besides pining for each other. It wasn’t super clear to me WHY they even liked each other as more than friends, I was just told that they did. This book is definitely something I would’ve enjoyed more had I read it when I was younger and I think that it’s an important book for young diabetics, even if it’s just to feel understood for a few pages.

DNF at about Chapter 6. I think my problem with this book was two-fold: (1) I just finished reading another book with a similar plotline. (Girl likes guy who doesn't know she likes him, and they've been best friends forever...) And (2) While this may have been a key element in the story later on, there was too much focus on her diabetes that took away from the flow of the story. I may try to come back to this one but am putting it aside for now.

Is honesty the best policy especially when you are risking losing something you love? If you have looked into the book Let Me List The Ways or if you have read the summary on the back of the book you would have probably seen a question like this. This is one of the problems or topics that are in this amazing book.

Let me list the ways is a romance about a girl named Mackenzie Clark falling in love with her childhood best friend Nolan Walker and wondering if he feels the same about her. The whole book is about if these two friends can turn into something more and if so is it worth possibly ruining the amazing friendship they already have. The two have done everything together since grade school but they are now both seniors in high school and they are trying to make as many memories as possible before they head off to college. To do this they create one of their amazing lists which is a “Senior Year Bucket List” of everything they want to do before they leave. You will read about adventures they go through like beach days, toilet papering someone's house, or getting matching tattoos, as well as struggles. One of the main struggles the two deal with is a disease, type 1 diabetes which Mackenzie has. Mackenzie shares some of her concerns, insecurities, and struggles about the disease throughout the book. And as you will learn Nolan is always there to support her through it whether that's defending her, being more educated about the disease, or always carrying hershey kisses around. Nolan also has struggles of his own like an injury that might mess with his future. Together Nolan and Mackenzie put each other's happiness before their own and try to make their last year together amazing while dealing with the idea of if they could be something more.

I overall liked this book because it was cute and there wasn’t anything too intense in it. It was refreshing to see a romance about teenagers that was still wholesome in a way. I wish there was a little more action or more turns or twists that made it a little less predictable but overall I still think it was a great story. If I could change one thing about it, it would be about making the ending longer. The story shared so many details about everything in their lives and then when we finally got to the ending it wrapped up the whole story in only a couple of pages. Without spoiling it completely, all I can say is that I wish it would have shown how their relationship changed after the trip. I think if you're looking for a quick romance book to read that this would be great, but if you are looking for something more emotional or intense then this might not be the book for you. If I was giving it a rating out of 5 stars, I would give it a 4 or 4.5.

If you are looking for some basic information about the book the author of Let me list the ways is Sarah White and the book was published on August 7, 2018. This book is not a part of a series so far (I wish it were) and the copy I had contained 293 pages with 31 chapters.

This book was a crazy roller coaster of meh to bad to okay to good to bad to good again. It was a cute friends-to-lovers, but lacked depth in every detail besides those included in the love story itself.
Unfortunately, White’s writing style is that of an author who has not yet found their niche. I believe this was her first novel, so the lack of mature writing is somewhat excusable, but I think I would have been able to love this book more if the writing was a bit more cultivated.
The characters are lovely, I will say. Mackenzie and Nolan work very well together as friends and face every challenge together even before their love story officially begins.

This was a good book, but I found it boring at parts and just not wanting to read it. But good ending the writer almost just didn’t finish the book at the end she just like stopped. So it was a happy end and lots of drama ( there was more drama than romance ) and a good unfinished story.

Always. I have never read a YA book that has made me cry this much, feel so much or that I have related to this much.

The idea that this could be real. This made it believable to me. As a diabetic, you find comfort in familiarity. Things in life that can be controlled make managing this sh*t show easier. Avoiding the «normal people» the non diabetics fit into that. This idea of confronting the outside world with and illness you can't see or an illness associated to so many stereotypes is hard.

It was hard to read this book at first because we read to live different things. And this was day to day life for me. Without the best friend, the romance, the support. It was the life you dream about. And event thought we saw the hard moments for Zie, there is so much more that we can't explain because it's unique to how we live.

I appreciate this book for its awareness, it's message of hope and most of all the new high standards I will never live down in any futur prospect of mine. Nickname Sugar and emergency candies are a must.

Thank you Sarah White for writing this book. For the tears, the hope and the heart stopping romance. But mostly for making us the main character.

09/04 reread-- Still gives me feels a second time around <3

*I received an eArc of this book from the Publishers through Netgalley in exchange of an honest review*

This story was adorable and quick. I wasn’t expecting the feels or how light this story was? Mackenzie as our main character was so likable. The way she dealt with her T1D, her relationship with her family and Nolan’s family— I liked her so much.

Same with Nolan, he was really sweet and the way they were together gave me a lot of feelings. The ending did leave on a open note in the sense of we don’t know what’ll happen after college and I did feel said ending was a bit abrupt. Yet, this whole story was just so easy and undramatic and breezy.

07/18-- I fell in love with this one QUICK

LET ME LIST THE WAYS follows Mackenzie --- usually called Zie --- through her senior year of high school. The book showcases her relationship with her neighbor and best friend Nolan. They have been friends for as long as either of them can remember. They wake each other up in the morning and always makes sure the other is doing well. They tell each other everything but Zie has the biggest crush on Nolan and promises herself to never tell him to keep it from ruining their perfect friendship.

During their senior year, Zie and Nolan face new challenges but their friendship never falters. As graduation grows nearer, the two decide to recreate some of their favorite childhood memories and create some new ones to keep things fresh. They will be attending different colleges so they are determined to spend as much time together as possible. Their friendship is the most important thing to both of them. They have always been there for each other so being apart will be an entirely new battle. Despite being excited about new opportunities and adventures --- and despite joking about how they won’t miss each other --- it is very obvious that the pair will miss each other dearly and are scared about how their friendship will be effected.

I really enjoyed reading LET ME LIST THE WAYS. I didn’t want to put the book down. This book made me laugh, smile and cry. At times it made me angry too --- it seemed like Nolan and Zie were finally going to get together but then they would both act as if nothing happened. The only thing I wish was more prominent would be the lists that Zie and Nolan create together. The title indicates a lot of lists are made, but they do not become entirely relevant until you’re about half way through the book. However, I still think an incredible story is told and I would not change anything else. I adored this book and even though I’m not sure how this would work, I would like to hear about happens to Zie and Nolan down the road --- how college is and how their friendship is.

I think anyone leaving for college should read this book. I connected with this book on a more personal level than I usually do, because I am heading off to college soon and I’m having to say goodbye to some dear friends of mine. I think this book makes the transition seem easier --- even though the story ends in the middle of Nolan and Zie’s senior year spring break. I would recommend this book to anyone in high school as well. It will help you to see that high school is not as bad as it may seem --- I know I wanted to get out of there as quick as possible --- and to enjoy every moment life gives you. High school will go by quickly, so enjoy it --- and your friends --- while you can.

This was going so well, but I think the scene when he spoke about the kiss should've been the catalyst for the confessions to come out. Nolan was admiting in front of his 'girlfriend' that the kiss with Zie was the most memorable for him. After that admission, why is Zie still thinking that it mean nothing to him? I'm aware that both of them has always put their friendship first, sacrificing their owns feelings for each other in the process, but for him to say that! it's just makes the scene very underwhelming, because the only thing that changes is that Nolan and Erin are over and Zie and Jude are over, but then Zie and Nolan continue on with their friendship relationship as if Nolan hasn't just basically destroyed his relationship with Erin for Zie as Jude so well put it. It's just makes you wonder at the end, while reading the final chapter: Why now? Was it really necessary to travel to Arizona to make them admit their feelings? No, not really. So anyway, this book was so good. I loved Zie and Nolan and their relationship, as I loved that there were never jealousy between Erin and Zie. The weren't that many scenes between the girls, but I get what that must be seeing as the main friendship relationship was between Nolan and Zei.

I found this book by accident while looking for cute YA books, and I really did enjoy this one! I’d say it’s a 3.75 stars but alas, they don’t give that option.

This book reminded me so much of my relationship! I am a sucker for friends to maybe lovers stories!

The characters were super likeable and fun! They seemed realistic to me and I fell in love with them both!

I enjoyed learning more about type 1 diabetes and what it’s like to live with the disease.

Some of the dialogue and prose was really stilted where I didn’t find it believable but most of it was amazing!

I recommend this book if you’re looking for something light and fun!

Wow. I have no words for this book. I'm not usually one for romance but this book definitely changed my mind about that. It wasn't a super sappy love story but there was still plenty of romance. The way the author balanced out their budding romance with Mackenzie's diabetes and Nolan's shoulder and both of their personal lives was amazing, I was very impressed. I was so happy that they finally got together at the end!

This was SO CUTE
Nolan and Mackenzie are the BEST of friends. They don’t keep any secrets from each other - except one - Mackenzie is in love with Nolan.
This is just the sweetest story of friendship - dealing with health issues and love! I fully suggest if you need something to make you smile - hit this up! Perfect for fans of Kasie West.

Tbh I don't think the story is awful in any way but I'm not in the mood for wattpad right now and I genuinely don't care about any of these characters.

3.5 good but kind of small-town average stars

You know, this went through stages.

1. This is why we write fanfiction before we write books! Writing, for some, is like a tap. And the first, dirty water is the ‘orbs’ and ‘knots’ and ‘voice like diamond and pearls, silk and velvet’ (no, that is an actual quote from an actual first draft of mine, no lie) and ‘inlaid diamonds in her eyes’ and ‘I looked in the mirror and saw my brown curly hair’ and ‘his teeth flamed through his smile’ and ‘his pants hugged his thighs’ etc etc etc.

2. Cute! Unrealistic, but also realistic. Unrelaistic in that these parents let their kids take days off school to go to Disneyland or the movies when they’re in Year 12. The entire school thing because judging by how much they cared about school… these kids are gonna be homeless. The fact that she wants to be a journalist? Um, hi. I watched Gilmore a girls, and I read What’s Not To Love? And if my expereienced experience with American college/uni journalism opportunities counts for anything… which it obviously does with all taht experience… that ain’t gonna happen. And also, the part where their parents just let their teenage daughter go on a weekend roadtrip by the lake with her teenage male best friend (who they know is in love with her)??? World-class parenting there.

But. I liked the fact that they were in yr 12 and still virgins, because god have I had enough of all the books, movies, tv shows and music saying ‘oh, it’s shameful and embarrassing if you haven’t had your first kiss by the time you were a fetus.’ ‘You didn’t have sex until you were 15? Omg, that’s so lame.’ Like-? As if you’re gonna find someone you actually trust and respect and know and care about enough to be that intimate with… when you haven’t even aged out of teenager hood yet. Like- surely teenagers have slightly more urgent things to focus on. LIKE GRADES?! OR SLEEP?! OR TV?! Like- ain’t nobody got time to worry about who’s *thing* is gonna invade your body first and when and for how long and okay I’m gonna stop because this isn’t what this section is about and idk how my brain let my fingers get this far.

This section is about how when I daydream a fun lil scenario, and can be bothered, I write the daydream down, horribly. Pointlessly. I read it 3 weeks later and go, ‘why did I think that was of enough substance to write down? What I am supposed to do with that?’ But he thing is… the writ8g is better used as an artwork of scribbles than writing, but the daydream. Oh! 😚👌

So sometimes I’ll get AI to write it but it’ll always come out like ‘and in that non-bedroom devoid of romantic intentions, the two friendly friends who treated each other like siblings sat on opposite sides of the universe and could feel (not physically of course) the platonic non-romantic sibling-like friendship between them.’

But then this lil bookeen had them all written out plus more!

I mean, massage. Tickles. Pulling one out of a strop and doing stuff in the sun. Giving chocolate when sad. Cheering at sports games. Hot tub. ‘Teaching’ kisses. Movies. Helping one move when hurt. And another one which is really bothering me because it’s so universal and has happened in so many books and- SMUT SCENES! The girl is reading a romance novel! And he sneaks a read and happens to always read the smit scene and teases the girl. That’s got be at least the third time I’ve read that trope.

Anyway, so yes. Slightly better written than my own. But my problem here was that they were such good friends… I disn’t want them to get together

3. When are they going to get together?

The answer? 8 pages away from the end. The whole book they were just Buddy Buddy being super platonic soulmates and doing everything but the smexy - which is my kinda friendship - and you know what?

I liked it. It was perfect. They should’ve just never dated anyone, got engaged and married when ready. And spent their life together as platonic soulmates. Adopt a kid. Or mesh their stuff together in a non-sex way (is that possible? Surely. It’s 2023.) and have a baby. I don’t see why these two would need anything else.

So, they were on their lil weekend holiday, suntanning and swimming, splashing and eating pizza and doin*all sorts of fun stuff and then she’s like ‘who do you see in your future?’ And he’s like ‘it’s always been you.’ And then they kiss? And there’s just no transition? Or build up? They’re like- ‘oh btdubs I’ve loved you forever?’
‘WHAT? No way! I’ve love you forever too!
Omg, twinissssiiieeesss. Hey, let!s send a picture eof us kissing to our parents and say that we’re officially dating
Sqquuueeee

And I, as a reader, feel offended. Why was I not included? Is it because I talk too much? BECAUSE YOU KNOW WHAT?! *slams book down* *stands up* FAIR ENOUGH! But these two had all the affectionate best friend (but not too affectionate) vibes if really great friends, but not of people who date! Or do any of… that. Stuff.

I needed her to kiss him and him back away and start like, crying, because omg you’re in love with me this is the worst news ever, I’m going to miss you so much as my best friend.

Or I needed them to get together, and one be totally betrayed by the other and have some lifetime mental issue because of it

That ending just felt very not them. I waiting for some banter, some teasing, some ‘what do we do now?’ ‘Idk.’ ‘Do we have to go on dates and stuff?’ ‘Errrrrrrr. Let’s just do all the stuff we used to do. Plus making out.’ ‘Works for me.’

Also. This made me laugh

‘She hesitated before grabbing the bikini before remembering that luckily she’d already shaved her legs since she’s been wearing shorts.’ WELL GEE, THANK THE LORD! That… that was a close one! Good mercy we’d been saved the utter SHAMEFUL EMBARASSING HUMILIATION OF-of- of… *sobs* *swoons* HAIR.

ON LEEEEEGGGGSSSS LIKE *HICCUP* EVERY OTHER HUMAN BEEEAAAANNN

(I’m sorry, I still find the whole thing of shaving legs when it’s not a special occasion ridiculous. Same with mascara or eyelash-curling. Not the people who do it, I do it sometimes, but the idea (at least for me) that we have to do it to feel comfortable around others? As if the bodies we were born with were too out of place within a crowd of bodies that were born just the same as ours? It’s a whole thing in my mind, excuse me;

Um, I think that was it! Enjoyable, cute, great best friend vibes, wish it ended with them too, rushed and abrupt kiss scene. It was basically the Love and Other Words flashback chapters. But during the school year and if they were neighbours. It’s what I wish Love + was. But I still like Love + more because it was just a different vibe idk.

THE END
