Jacob Paul Patchen is a multi-award-winning author and poet of various genres and age groups. He writes children's, teen, young adult, and adult fiction. His books often reflect on real-life experiences, examine what makes us who we are, and instill goodness. For Jacob, every book has a purpose. Patchen earns his inspiration through experience, where he writes about the things that built him: Love, Family, War, and Learning things the hard way.

A former Marine and combat veteran, Jacob graduated from Muskingum University, where he studied Creative Writing. Jacob is a member of IPBA, MWSA, and has books published by TouchPoint Press, Black Rose Writing, and Adelaide Books. Currently, he continues to sharpen his craft while working at Muskingum University. Jacob’s most recent books include: Sheltered: When a Boy Becomes a Legend (TouchPoint Press, 2021), Words That Matter: Family Book 1 of 10 (TouchPoint Press, 2021), At Daddy’s Hands: Courage Knows No Age (4x award-winner, Black Rose Writing, 2019), Of Love and War (Adelaide Books, 2018).

Jacob considers his time as a United States Marine as a major turning point in his life. Deployed to Iraq as a Rifleman in 2005, Jacob learned quickly to appreciate and love the little things that life has to offer. With a deep understanding and admiration for having a purpose in life, Jacob decided to live his life in honor of those that never made it back home by following his dreams, getting the most out of life, and encouraging good intentions.

Patchen took his pen name from his grandfather, who was blessed with four amazing daughters but no son Jacob wanted to carry on the family name and honor his grandparents who were such a prominent pillar of love, support, and knowledge. Readers will see that the importance of this foundation is at the heart of Patchen’s writing. Jacob’s roots are buried is rural poetry, where he started writing, at the age of 12, about nature, love, and his own experiences using a confessional tone.

Jacob believes that his writing career began on the day that he decided to quit an oil and gas job in order to finish his first book, Life Lessons from Grandpa and His Chicken Coop. Jacob has worked in several job fields, including: excavating for his father’s company, evening manager at a bowling alley, bartender, youth case manager at a behavioral health facility, marketing, and has even started his own handyman business. But none has given him purpose and satisfaction quite like writing has.

He has been published in several literary journals, including New Millennium Writings, Into the Void Magazine, The Deadly Writers Patrol, and Lost Lake Folk Opera Magazine. He has also been selected as a finalist in many poetry competitions.

The title says it all!

This is a book filled with inspiration and gives the reader aspirations. The book sets the tone for needing something, something that you may not realize you need. A little humor and inspiration, and the shared experiences of life. This book takes a moment to share insights into life and different events and situations. I really enjoyed reading it, and I bet it will stay on my shelf for those days when a little inspiring is needed.

I wasn’t sure how I would like this book. I’m not sure how I feel about the inspirational genre, but, after reading through the table of contents and the first few pages, I knew this book was one for me.

It’s sassy, sarcastic, patriotic, and awkward all wrapped up in a humorous blunt way of speaking. Patchen’s book is an assemblage of blog posts from jacobpaulpatchen.com. And, in a strange way, after finishing the book, I had an image of what he looked like in my head. I went to his site, and he looks almost exactly like I’d pictured. Crazy! After reading this book, I feel like I know him. Patchen’s a guy that I could sit and have a beer with while having a semi-intelligent conversation, because half of what I think doesn’t connect to anything else I’ve said.

Talking S.H.I.T. is like sitting down with a cool, awkward, funny, hopelessly romantic dude and just chilling and talking about anything at all. It’s not him running his mouth or ranting. It’s him talking about those things which he thinks about, be it family, back roads, the meaning of life, slutty Halloween costumes, or why we go to bars.

This book has the awkward charm of the dating scene. Its patriotic like a eagle sporting a mullet and holding a shotgun (in a good way). It’s packed with family-love and genuine heart and soul. It’s a refreshing view of humanity that kept me reading. It’s interesting and funny. It reads like Patchen is sitting across the table talking to me. He’s not aggressive in what he says. He’s matter-of-fact and blunt, but not aggressive. These pages are simply his thoughts, take them or leave them; they hold the running theme of living life while we can, spreading love and getting some in return, and never taking life, love, or freedom for granted.

I almost – almost – gave this book a 4 out of 5. There were a few typos, including a few oddly placed semicolons. We all know how I love a good semicolon when done right. I’m not sure how I feel about the blog feel. It feels like blog posts arranged in themed-chapters, which it is, which I have no problem with, but I’m not sure. I want to say that it could have done better if an editor had given it a once-over. I decided to go ahead of give it a 5 out of 5 because I couldn’t suggest a better system.

This book is fun and a delight to read. If you’re into nonfiction and inspirational, I recommend you check it out!
