One Piece, Volume 8: I Won't Die

Rate this book
If Luffy wants to get out of a year's worth of chore-boy duty on the oceangoing restaurant Baratie, he's got to rid the seas of the evil Don Krieg. Unfortunately, Krieg's armed to the teeth and aided by his "Demon Man," Commander Gin. The battle takes a surprising turn as Krieg reveals his increasingly deadly military might! Meanwhile, Nami has sailed off on the Merry Go with treasure in tow, and she's headed to Arlong Park, home of creepy Captain Arlong and his Fish-Man Pirates. What business does Nami have at Arlong Park, anyway? Something fishy is going on and Luffy's crew just may be in over their heads!

Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

I had honestly forgotten how tall Buggy is lol
Also I remember in the anime we didn't get these silent pictures after each episode or something, but rather got the entire story when Buggy and Alvida eventually made their return.

Sanji leaving the restaurant was so emotional, and because of it, non fighting scenes remain to be the best scenes in this story so far which is crazy, but I still think it's because of the stupid bystanders commenting on everything happening.

I take my words back about Don Krieg, he isn't strong because of his weapons only, just the shoulders of his armor way 1Ton!
Imagine the rest of it!

I read the name Arlong and I remembered a shark, so I guess I still remember somethings, reading this makes me want to watch the series again, but I really have no time to dedicate to anime anymore.

My goodreads shelves, desperately need an action-adventure shelf, most of the manga I read were like that, but I never made one.

An epic conclusion to the battle with Don Krieg. We finally get a glimpse of Luffy's willpower and why he's an excellent candidate to be the king of pirates. The action scenes do get quite crazy at times, and it's what makes it so exciting.

The story arc then proceeds with the hunt for Nami following her departure, which leads to exploring her origins and what she had always intended to do.

This volume ends with a sort of predictable twist, but things should get intense pretty quickly with Captain Arlong and his crew.

Even a man bristling with powerful weapons can be skewered by the spear of plain grit.
This reader's more than a bit skeptical of that, but I'm decades too old to be reading this material, so take that for what it's worth. It's still inspiring in its context. And come down to it, no one makes it through difficulties without determination, so Zeff isn't wrong.

Luffy doesn't give up.

Finish the fight at the restaurant, convince Sanji to be his cook, and then follow after Nami, who stole their ship and treasure a couple of volumes back (because that's how she do). Really good stuff.

We also get introduced to Saw-tooth. Look at that nose. I don't even.

Even after the end, Krieg continues to be an unfathomable dumbass. I rather wonder whether he ever learned some humility, perhaps after sobering up from his defeat, or if he just continued to claim he was the best. Even though we see East Blue now and then after this, we never do see him, or hear of him, in any measure - it makes me curious.

Anyway, that's that over with. Luffy's got a cook now (one that doesn't know Devil Fruit users can't swim, even though by later revelations, he should have), now it's the time to get back the navigator, and to wonder about fishman economy. Arlong's scheme doesn't seem sustainable. Where do all these villagers get the money to pay him?

Luffy gives me “what kind of dog is that” vibes when it’s clearly not a dog at all. 😭😭😭

Although I've been transparent about my dislike of Don Krieg, the way Luffy beats him is badass. I hate how the show censors so much of the blood. The manga will always be superior to me. (They've been knocking it out of the park with Wano Kuni, however.)

The end of the cooking/restaurant/Don Krieg arc and it is on to find Nami! We find a town with upside down houses, a new pirate/fishman/whatever you want to call him named Arlong, Nami is found but what is she doing there (I can already guess though, haha), and there is more. I loved how we got to see various parts of the story through the whole crew. Not just Luffy's, but also Usopp's, Zolo, Nami. Fun! I cannot wait to see what is next. For now this is what my library had, so I will have to wait until 9 is added, then I can read that and 10, and then it is waiting even longer until they add volumes 11 and higher. I am enjoying this series though, so I cannot wait~

It's like watching an episode of Batman the Animated Series: no one dies and there are seemingly no stakes. - That said, it's easier to recommend to younger readers and it's not skimping on action anymore.

In this volume; Don Krieg gets his comeuppance, Luffy gains a chef but loses a boat, Nami returns and fish-men appear.

Volume 8: Chapter 63-71
Saga 1: East Blue Saga
Arc 4: Baratie
Arc 5: Arlong Park

Don Krieg is defeated by Luffy. Sanji decides to join Luffy as he wants to fulfil Zeff's dream to find All Blue. Sanji's departure is really heart-breaking 😢

Earlier, Nami steal Going Merry and head to Arlong Park near Cocoyashi Village and Gosa Village. Wounded Zoro, Usopp and Johnny followed Nami while Yosaku reunite with Luffy and Sanji. Nami is one of Arlong Pirates' member and she act as a cartographer for them.

Another Shichibukai is revealed which is Jinbe. He is a Fishmen.

Chapters 63-71

I am really enjoying this journey with Luffy and co! Here we finally have the end of Luffy's battle with Don Kreig, and the introduction of the fishmen. The art is good, but simple, making the action and story easy to follow. The settings are well drawn as well. Overall, a good if long series.

(chapters 63-71: 4/5 stars) i am sooo happy don krieg is done for and that fight was insane. sanji’s departure from the baratte was comedically emotional. i was indeed gagged by nami’s reveal of being a pirate. honestly i think she’s just apart of arlong’s crew in some sort of years-long intricate revenge plan - which i support if that is the case. very very excited to see where things go!

Don Krieg was never one of my favourite villains, and it just felt like that party of the story was dragging...I almost gave this one a 3 because of it but then we end off this volume at Arlong Park and I’m so excited for it!
