The full plan to take down Big Mom is finally revealed, but can Luffy’s team actually pull off this tremendous challenge? The Straw Hats will need to work with some allies they don't even trust if they hope to suceed. But first things first: how will they crash the biggest wedding in the pirate world?!
Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Charlotte Katakuri makes his entrance into the arc, fashionably late - probably the latest of all final arc bosses - and immediately turns things belly-up for everyone. He's a lot more competent than anyone else in the crew and won't let the main characters fool around as they did before. Would've been so much smoother sailing without him around.
Speaking of smooth sailing (or lack thereof), Unspoken Plan Guarantee comes to play on both sides of the fence. We know how things should go, and so of course that's exactly how they won't. Sanji isn't shocked at all by the third eye. Big Mom can blast away missiles and shatter mirrors with the sheer power of her haki. And Luffy's cake surprise would turn out to be a bad, bad idea... although I guess Luffy never planned anything in the first place, so he gets a pass.
Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Morgans turned out to be a parody of overeager fans. Everything's a big deal. Which I guess means that no one is?
The war begins and they make their plans for the scene to happen at the wedding and they crash it, fights happen, Big Mom's backstory is revealed through a flashback and its quite okay and then the thing with the fights happen and they thought the plan would go well until it backfires. And then the stuff with Pudding happens and Germa 66 power up. Good volume and has lots of weird stuff building up stakes for whats to come in future cleary.

I have to admire Oda's capacity to manage this many characters at the same time, especially in massive fight scenes that are as plot-heavy as the tea-party... I have personally lost track of the "who" and the "what" of most new characters from this ark (except Sanji's family, those are easy: crap-dad, three dickhead-brothers and cool-sis)... Big Mom has way too many kids (seriously though, how many times has she been pregnant?) with too many titles (ministers? commanders? whatever) so if he starts throwing some big mafia bosses now, I have no choice but to give up trying to remember everyone... Anyway, the only thing that really matters is that my babies make it out alive, anything else is just bonus at this point.
Katakuri is here!!!! (Traffy is looking very betrayed somewhere on Grand Line. Don't worry dude, I still love you) When I started reading this arc I wanted to binge it all at once because that was the first ttime I could do so. I kinda failed at binging but I feel like this is not necessarily a bad thing because I feel like I still appreciate the arc. This volume felt slightly slower than the previous ones I would say. There are some flashbacks that slowed down the pace a little bit. But I know from now on it's only action until the end of this arc so I don't mind the breather. And the introduction of Katakuri makes me more willing to forgive stuffs. Because I love him? In case that wasn't clear. He's great.
Sanji's wedding continues and the plan is set into motion. Everything begins to go according to plan but when one unanticipated event happens it turns everything on it's head.
Overall a highly anticipated continuation to Sanji's wedding and the events that will unfold will make for a great next volume.
I received this advanced copy from VIZ Media through Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review.
Volume 86: Chapter 859-869 Saga 9: Whole Cake Island Arc 29: Whole Cake Island
Straw Hat Pirates and Fire Tank Pirates plan to kill Big Mom during the wedding. Big Mom will become vunerable when they break Mother Caramel's picture. Many well-known person arrived at the wedding: - "Big News" Morgan, President of the World Economic Journal - "God of Fortune" Du Feld, loan shark king - Stussy, Queen of the Pleasure District - Drug Peclo, major undertaker - Giberson the Hider, warehouse kingpin - "Deep-Sea Currents" Umit, shipping king - Jigra, organ dealer
The two Sweet 3 Generals are there including Charlotte Katakuri with a bounty of 1 billion 57 million Berry. Pudding cannot kill Sanji. Katakuri who can see a future start to attack Sanji but it gives a signal for the assassination team to start their plan. Luffy comes out from the weddding cake along with his doppelgangers.
Jinbe faced Big Mom and asked to quit Big Mom Pirates without a bit of fear. Brook managed to break Mother Caramel's picture. The whole event was in chaos and Big Mom was in confused state. Perospero lead the team to assassinate Vinsmoke Family. Sanji comes to help.
63 years ago, Big Mom's parent sent her to Elbaf, the land of the giants. There, she met Mother Caramel and other orphans. One day, she destroyed the Elbaf village due to hunger and she even beat one of the giants. Mother Caramel brought her and her foster siblings into other orphanage. One day, they celebrated Big Mom's birthday and suddenly her friends and Mother Caramel simply vanished. There are two witnesses of the tragedy; a giant and Streusen. Streusen then took care of Big Mom and they formed Big Mom Pirates.
The KX Launcher that used to kill Big Mom exploded midair by Big Mom's Conqueror's Haki. Caesar who responsible to prepare an escape route for the team jumped in but his mirror was broken also due to Big Mom's Conqueror's Haki. Germa 66 joined the battle. The assassination team was in dire state. They were surrounded by Big Mom Pirates with no where to escape.
First Trafalgar and now Capone Bege! These Worst-Gen Alliances are so much fun! I might be wrong, but I can see in my mind's eye that the next alliance of Straw Hat Pirates would be with Eustass Kid. If I'm on point then it could be their strongest alliance yet!!🤞
Sanji! You’re a better person than me. To save your family even tho they are the literal WORSE people in the world. Ugh. If people don’t agree that your backstory is literally in the top 5 saddest one piece backstories then I’ll fight them. Poor baby
The greatest pirate wedding in the world is about to marry Sanji into the family of Big Mom, so Luffy and the crew have no choice but to seek out help from some untrustworthy allies! Oda delivers more humour and heart in this entry to the "One Piece" series. What sort of dastardly plan does Big Mom have for Sanji and the Vinsmokes?!
"A man who would be crewmate of the future King of Pirates... cannot afford to tremble in the presence of a mere Emperor!!!"
You know, I've seen this spread dozens of times as an example of how cluttered Oda's paneling became over time, and it did always look messy to me, but it's kind of not bad in context, or at least because Manga Plus can only display one page at a time and so every spread is always cut in half, and the relatively small center panel here, the panel which is the actual "spread," is simple enough that it's not really "ruined" by being cut up. That said... I kinda feel like Brook's sneaky moment during aforementioned spread steals Jinbe's thunder...!
Anyway, as was the case for Dressrosa as well, I'm a bit surprised to see what feels like the "climax" of this arc, knowing there are three or four more volumes of material. Based on how Dressrosa worked, I'm assuming we're about to get into a big battle with Luffy versus Katakuri as centerpiece while other people take on Smoothie and Perospero and probably others, similar to how Luffy, Law, and Doffy were all roughly in the same battle while other of Doffy's main fighters battled lesser heroes.
This volume was definitely already pretty good from the start, but it really excelled when the plot to assassinate Big Mom kicked in, and especially when it inevitably failed (as such plans tend to go in... well, practically any story ever!). I mentioned before that I was surprised at Bege's prominence despite his apparent lack of popularity, but I must say I definitely like him now that I've seen the Big Father. And we also get the neo-Nazis' henshin forms, adding more Sentai references, though I guess it's odd that the morphing "heroes" and the giant robot golem are not from the same faction....
Luffy and especially Brook get some great moments here, mainly in terms of comedy.
Big Mom's backstory is... interesting. It's weird to say, but I'm reminded of an old cat we had (peace he upon him) who I once half-jokingly viewed as a "monster" because he would meow for chicken/pork/steak/whatever and keep gobbling up table scraps without any apparent "drive" other than simply eating because it's there and he knows he likes the type of food. Other times, I might think he had some sense of "personality" about him, as pets often appear, but in this case he seemed like a purely instinctual force of nature. Or, not even instinct, so much as raw, unfettered egoism. Big Mom is/was the same. She finds she likes a certain Giant snack, and so devoured it to the point of destroying a village and killing a great Giant warrior while "hangry," and one of her greatest weaknesses today is a sadness at the mystery of her beloved mentor's appearance, whom (which is also the origin of Linlin's Devil Fruit ability).
****
It's pretty fucking bleak to see this volume's release date and know I'm still five years behind in the manga...!
I'm constantly annoyed that the Straw Hats' new Fishman crewmate's name is localized as "Jimbei," not because of the "m" versus "n" debate, but because the "i" at the end fucks up the syllables of the original Japanese, pretty sure. Then again, these people still call Zoro "Zolo," so I'm sure they just don't care. I mean, in fairness, it's VIZ, so I know they don't care, because everyone who works there just fuckin' hates manga, but....
Luffy gave me a good chuckle. Brook's Luffy "disguise" was perhaps even funnier.
Not gonna lie, I think Pudding's third eye is pretty cute as well. Wouldn't mind blinding it with my white-hot seed...! But it's the simple fact that I'm not in the process of being smothered to death by Nami and Carrot's thighs that truly depresses me...!!!
Smoothie's hips and thighs are still insane.
I like how Reiju's Raid Suit shows so much skin, even if it goes against the art direction of literally any Japanese hero show (though I guess it kinda fits how villainess costumes work...).

Big Mom’un Mother’ı pislik Caramel “orphan seller”. World government ve denizciler zaten şerefsiz.
PS: “Crocodile holding out an umbrella for a puppy shivering in the rain.” Oda’dan böyle bir şeyi isteyen kişiye ❤️ Aşırı beğendim 860. bölüm kapağını. 862’deki Shanks ve Buggy’li olanda güzeldi.

during wedding day, pudding showed sanji her third eye and instead of feeling disgusted or creeped out, he said it was beautiful. luffy jumped out of the wedding cake, effectively destroying the cake and massively pissing big mom off.
There's no way a man that intends to join the crew of the future pirate king will cower at a mere yonkou!”
JIMBEI!!! OMGGGG YOU SO COOL
brook destroyed mother caramel's photo. big mom was in shock and the planned signal of big mom's sonic scream didn't happen. so luffy raised up the destroyed photo frame again and big mom went crazy. germa 66 got their gears back and could fight now.
years ago, linlin was brought to elbaf to live with the giants with her mother. however, during her first fasting, she destroyed the village of elbaf on her 6th day. she killed the hero of the giants, yorle, in her trance. mother caramel took linlin and left elbaf. she's actually an orphan seller with a underworld name called mountain witch. she had been selling an orphan every two years to the government. on one of her birthdays, mother caramel and the rest of the orphans disappeared. i'm guessing she ate all of them during her food rampage. two people saw this happened: a giant from elbaf who came to visit and went back to tell everyone, and streusen (a chef and former pirate) who could make anything food. which is how big mom survived.
they wanted to escape through a mirror that caesar prepared but it shattered upon big mom's second sonic scream.
“A man who would be crewmate of the future king of pirates cannot afford to tremble in the presence of a memre emperor!”
Sanji saving his family was the ultimate fuck you move. In a moment where they were weak, he proved how powerful he truly is. I hope that he gets an apology from them.
Big mom’s backstory was sad. She was abandoned by her parents and the her mother figure was planning to sell her. She has good ideals but she was completely reckless with her powers. She needed someone to be strict when it comes to how she should use her powers, but she also needed someone who was patience and kind. I can see how her childhood shaped her.
Thoughts while reading:
- LMAOOO not luffy wanting to fight everyone so he can look cool - Hate to say it but pudding’s dress is pretty - A BILLION 57 MILLION?? WHATTTTTTTT - Is Mother Carmel Big Mom’s Mom - LMAOOO WHY IS HE STANDING LIKE THAT - LMAOOOO not sanji’s compliment saving his life - LMAOOOO NOT LUFFY EATING THR CAKE - He ate with the entrance - LMAOO NOT LUFFY EXPOSING HIMSELF - Her parents abandoned her?? That’s so sad - Sister Carmel looks so good slay - OMGG HE WAS SO YOUNG - Damnnn I thought she was kind - Did she eat them? Or did they distracted her and left? - YOOO THE CASTLE MOVE WAS COOL
The Wedding comes to a head, and Sanji shows his stuff. Germa 66 helps out with the battle. Jinbei leaves Big Mom's Pirate Crew spectacularly.
This volume shows the true peculiarity that is Big Mom and her powers. I understand that she has control over souls and lifespan, but that doesn't explain her abilities as a five-year-old human. How did she eat everyone without noticing?
When these came out as individual chapters, I speculated on several points of interest. I no longer remember them, though. I figured that Katakuri and Luffy would fight, and I thought Luffy would finally awaken his Devil's Fruit abilities. Those events are for another time, though. Then again, I expected Luffy to awaken the Gomu Gomu Fruit ever since such a thing was mentioned in the series.
Anyway, thanks for reading my review, and see you next time.
