Luffy narrowly escapes being executed by his old nemeses Lady Alvida and Buggy the Clown, but now he has the Navy hot on his trail. Leading the hunt is the relentless Captain Smoker, a man who has never let a pirate escape from his jurisdiction!
Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

If you read this and don’t find Laboon the whale to be one of the cutest and most tragic fictional animals in history....Something must be wrong with you. Go reconsider your life choices.
I can see why I lost steam here, the last time around. Neither "Hachiko the Whale" nor Zoro's one-vs.-many battle vs. the Baroque Works in this volume impressed me very much. I'm going to keep on with it because I know there are better storylines to come.
Luffy is such a kind-hearted little soul. I am enjoying this manga so much. I think it is perfect for kids with great messages. The crew has finally found their way into the Grand Line and the real adventure has begun...if they can learn to navigate the strange sea and avoid getting themselves into any scrapes...
With their first bounties on all of their heads, Luffy and his crew escape their latest confrontation and are off to the Grand Line with a small detour that puts them up against a very large foe. As they discover more of the intricacies of the sea, they make new friends and continue their way onto an island where they discover Baroque Works, a super-secret organization.
Ending with an epic battle where Zoro takes center stage and proves us why he's the coolest, it is safe to say that Luffy lost almost 100 IQ although he already was fairly dumb most of the time and I hope this is only for some temporary comic relief because it isn't something I can tolerate for too long.
One Piece is a weird story in that the best parts of it are the stuff in between longer arcs, the intermissions and lulls, when exposition is given and plot progresses. I think this volume may be where the tendency starts: it's finishing up one arc and starting the next, and in between it's packed with mystery and build-up and foreshadowing, telling us what to expect in the far future, setting up the adventure and the antagonists, and making us wonder. Not to mention a lot of opportunities for Luffy being a dunce.
It may be my favorite so far, in fact. We get a great idea of what Grand Line is all about, yet we've barely dipped our toes in the ocean.
One Piece, Vol. 12 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (100–108) of the on-going manga series.
This tankōbon is a collection of three storylines. As the Straw Hats try to flee the island, Smoker gets in their way. Monkey D. Luffy fights him, but is quickly pinned to the ground. With the help of a man named Dragon, he escapes.
The Straw Hats finally enters the Grand Line by crossing Reverse Mountain, where they are swallowed by the giant whale Laboon. In its stomach they meet Mr. 9 and Miss Wednesday, who are trying to kill the whale to feed their village, and Crocus, Laboon's caretaker. Crocus shows them the way out, telling the whale's story, and introduces the Straw Hats to navigating the Grand Line. Luffy impulsively gives Miss Wednesday and Mr. 9 a ride to Whiskey Peak, their home village.
Their arrival is celebrated by the townspeople, who are bounty hunters for Baroque Works. With his comrades fast asleep after the party, Roronoa Zoro must fight the roughly 100 bounty hunters himself.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part, it is written and illustrated rather well. It feels like a transitory tankōbon, because of the quick storylines – it concluded the Loguetown Arc, began and concluded the Reverse Mountain Arc, and began the Whiskey Peak Arc. After several multi-tankōbon story arcs, it is good to read short arcs to balance each epic adventure.
All in all, One Piece, Vol. 12 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.
Luffy has escaped an execution by the crazy Buggy the Clown! He and the crew now must escape Loguetown all the while the Marines are chasing them. An enormous storm and Captain Smoker also throw a large obstacle for our favorite heroes. Oda creates a suspenseful conclusion for the Loguetown arc with crazy situations and a mysterious character reveal that throws questions on the already growing pile of questions. We learn more about how the world of One Piece is mapped out, as well as the law of its ocean's ability of travel. The crew finally make it to the entrance to the most dangerous ocean ever (or so we think for now). Its here that the sub arc's connected main arc, The East Blue arc, concludes.
Mystery only builds as we enter a thick fog. Eichiro Oda leaves the reader wondering what could be in this supposed watery graveyard. The first sight is true Oda fashion with a huge surprise. This new situation introduces us to some new characters. First we have Crocus, a lighthouse keeper who gaurds a cherished friend from harm. The other two are Mr. 9 and Ms. Wednesday. These two have a bit of a "Team Rocket" feel with their zany methods of trying to commit crimes. (Pokemon reference for everyone.) Though they are more comical than intimidating, there is more to them than meets the eye.
Our heroes depart their first stop and soon learn of the unreadable weather system of the Grand Line. Nami shows off her skills as a navigator and the crew reach the first island of the Grand Line, Whiskey Peak. It is here we enter the second main arc, The Baroque Works arc. After being welcomed into a town, the Straw Hats are almost killed. Thankfully a certain swordsman never lets his guard down and is able to handle the situation.
The Legend Begins is a great volume that wraps up both a good sub arc and the overall main arc. It delivers wonderful characters, locations, world building, questions for the future, and more. Though the beginning of the second main arc can be a little slower paced compared to the Arlong Park and Loguetown arcs, it never feels disappointing. The plot spices back up rather quickly and the conspiracy filled storyline, to come, commences.
REVERSE MOUNTAIN ARC 1. the hype of getting into the grand line is unmatched. the log pose is a super interesting piece of tool introduced to us. i really like that the laws of physics are way different in the grand line, which enhances the feel that it's something to be respected and feared.
2. sperm whales <3 i was very pleasantly surprised in seeing a whale, and promptly got my heart broken with its story. i sincerely hope that this promise of luffy's is going to get picked up later down the line.
3. so far mr. 9 and ms. wednesday have given me the same exact vibe as jessy and james from team rocket have done; and i find everything about them quite humorous
WHISKY PEAK ARC 1. ms. wednesday saying 'everything is treacherous' about the weather is a good way to set the tone for all that is come, next island and also next story bits
2. zoro grows hotter with the second. that's all. thanks for coming to my ted talk.
3. the introduction of so many people who have devil fruit powers for one make me wonder how many devil fruits exist, and also raises my expectations for the power profile that's been presented thus far
4. nami's character is a big manipulator and gaslighter, which i absolutely appreciate, because that means there's somebody who is able to see through the schemes of others, because on the other hand you have luffy's naivety/ability to take things at face value without spending a milisecond of critical thinking. it's quite humorous and funny, because it has potential to be used in versatile ways - it can be cause for cutting the tension of situations, but his direct stubbornness of luffy's is a good counter to ms. all sunday's cunning guile
5. with the immediate repercussion to the strawhat learning of mr. zero's identity and the death of igaram, we immediately get reminded that there's actual consequences and there's tragedy to be expected, be it through the reveal of the 'spikes' on the cacti to be tomb stones or bombing an entire ship
Probably the most enjoyable volume of One Piece yet! It truly feels the most like an epic adventure! We’re finally at the Grand Line!!! Inside a giant whale! A Cactus Island! And Zolo v. 100 bounty hunters!! Awesome.
The crew heads towards the Grand Line by going up the Reverse Mountain. The Grand Line is more dangerous than they thought I'd be. Currently staying on the Whiskey Peak Island everyone except Zoro is wasted, who's busy fighting of all of the islanders. A great volume. Can't wait for the continuation of their journey to the One Piece which is probably at the final stop of the Grand Line, Raftel.
EAST BLUE PART 12 & BAROQUE WORKS PART 1; Vol. 12: The Legend Begins
100: The Legend Begins' 101: Reverse Mountain 102: And Now, the Grand Line 103: The Whale 104: Cape Promise 105: Log Pose 106: The Town of Welcome 107: Moonlight and Tombstones 108: 100 Bounty Hunters
Their almost there; we get to see the best whale in fiction that could replace Moby Dick Laboooo. And of course we finally meet one of the best girl in the series Vivi.
Finally made it to the Grand Line, which is good, but this starts with chapter 100 and it's only just now called "The Legend Begins" so oof. We meet a sad whale and Zolo/Zoro/whoever he is fights a 100 member group of bounty hunters. This starts with Lady Alvida and Buggy the Clown trying to kill Luffy, which was an odd choice and throw back that didn't seem wholly clear why. Captain Smoker put a 30 million berry bounty on Luffy's head, so that will be a big deal for a while and there was an unexpected-but-welcome cameo here for some good foreshadowing.
