It's supposed to be Bed and Breakfast, not Dead and Breakfast.
When Artemis Mani, owner of the bed and breakfast in Moonlight Cove goes out to get the paper one morning, the last thing she expects to find is a dead teenager in her yard.
And to make matters worse, it turns out Arti's own mother had a fight with the victim just a few hours before he was killed. Worried that her mom is going to get herself arrested, Arti decides she needs to find the real killer, before it's too late.
But between the new tall, gorgeous police chief trying to keep Arti away from the investigation, trying to maintain the Bed and Breakfast's reputation after a body was found on the lawn, and some mysteriously disappearing household items, Arti quickly finds she has her work cut out for her.
Will she be able to find the real killer before her mom is arrested instead?
Witching Ain't Easy is the first full-length novel in the Moonlight Cove series of paranormal cozy mysteries.
Samantha Silver lives in British Columbia, Canada, along with her husband and seventeen-year-old dog named Terra.
When she's not writing cozy mysteries, Samantha loves travelling (she's most recently been to Egypt, Jordan and Florida) skiing, eating Dairy Queen, and complaining about how hard running is.
This is a nice paranormal cozy; though it's set in a paranormal town, the protagonist really doesn't use any magic to solve the case. There is a cute talking cat though, the heroine uses magic in her kitchen, and there area few magical vignettes so it falls into the paranormal category. This is definitely a cozy for a winter afternoon beside the fire.
Interesting beginning to a new series. Characters were easy to like and trails for clues could be recognized. More detail about main character would be more interesting
I was prepared to write a more positive review up until 3/4 of it, but it looked like the author was a bit confused about how to tie everything together in the end. It looked pretty good at first, but the end didn't quite match. Continuity issues, like names changing suddenly, and a few minor grammar mistakes. Some of the later scenes didn't match previous events thus generating confusion instead of clarity near the end of the story.
I don't really know Latin but I get the feeling the magic words were part Latin, part made up and adjusted with english readings. I wasn't entirely sure how to read them. In the scene about the dueling there was a spell a bit too similar to one used in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets during Harry's and Draco's duel, the other spells sounded more original though.
Overall a nice and quick read. I particularly liked Luna, Artemis' cat, she was really funny. I don't know if I'll read other books from the series, but I may consider it if Luna gets a bigger part in the investigation.
.. a dead body as goes to retrieve the paper. It's a student, Peter Olsen, star of the duelling team but a bad boy who seems to need to seek trouble rather than anything else.
Artemis soon discovers that there's more trouble than just a dead body on her property; her mother was one of the last people to see Peter alive and their run in wasn't a good one. Mrs Mani was heard raging at Peter in the local supermarket and it's put her high on the suspect list.
With the new Chief only recently back from a long stint in the human world, and the double connection between her family and the victim, Artemis can't leave it alone and starts her own investigation.
Totally different to Silver's usual work. The influence of Page is everywhere; improved grammar, strong descriptors, improved dialogue.. just everything is better.. so much more polished and no obvious grating errors.. wow!
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
A delightful read and sets the stage for a great series
Delightful light read for anyone that likes paranormal cozy mysteries. Alright the book did need some proofing work and there really wasn't a lot of actual magic done by the main character but nevertheless I loved it. The characters are fun and as ill suited to investigating as anyone you could hope to meet but they do grow on you. The plot has some interesting quirks and twists which will keep you reading. Also the stage seems set not only for a romance but also for her cat to be more involved in future books. (Loved the snarky comments from the cat) A great new series to come.
I found this book a little slow to get into , I like the authors other series but this first book was a bit boring at first , I like a little more magic in the stories and a little more action. I guess that's why I read magic , witch books, I read a lot of them Isee why libraries are having a hard time , I read more books on Kindle than I ever did got to the library I guess it's the convence of getting them online. I hope the next book in the series is better if not I will skip this series for now,
I enjoyed this story very much due to the author's ability to develop character, setting, and plot. Even the hotel guest temporary characters seemed real! The hotel, school, and other places in town appeared by description like a movie set. The plot flowed seamlessly, developed convincingly, and resolved satisfyingly. I love Luna, the cat. I have three feline friends myself., and they are just as irresistible and exasperating.
Interesting concept, fast paced, characters need to be expanded, description is great, story line was good just needed a little more intrigue. Will read the next one in the series
Interesting story line and characters. I'm sure that furniture books will fill them out more. Right now they are still pretty generic, thus the rating of four. I did enjoy the books plot, which was a bit unique.
I really enjoyed this book it was a nice clean read. I didn’t know who did the deed. But the witch kept working at it because her mother was accused for it and she wanted to find out who did it
Cool new which he cozy mystery series. Great cast of characters cozy little town in the state of Washington all the paranormal mystery and fun you expect in a witchy cozy mystery. Very entertaining read check it out
I really enjoyed reading this book. I couldn't put it down. I was surprised at who did it. I will be reading the next two books in the series. I would recommend it to everyone to read iy.
This has the best cat familiar dialog I have read, totally snarky. Honestly, the book just sailed by. Trying to solve the mystery I was so wrong; delightful twists and turns. Cannot wait to get my hands on the next book.
A very enjoyable book. I love a book that doesn't make you try too hard. That goes at a gentle pace but keeps you guessing. This was all of these. I'm certainly looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.
Arti is a capable witch. She is smart and has good instincts . I can see her and the new Sheriff butting heads in future books, and maybe more. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
A fun, fast-paced book. Good, interesting, characters. Good plot, with a lot interesting twists and turns. The school and the students were very realistic.
