Charlie Rhodes #2

The Chupacabra Catastrophe

Rate this book
Charlie Rhodes has a new life and it’s not exactly what she thought it would be.

She’s psychic, telekinetic and eager to learn from her knowledgeable co-workers at The Legacy Foundation. She’s also nervous, frightened and on edge … mostly because she’s exactly the sort of oddity the group is looking to study and she’s desperate to keep her secret from the very people who are searching for her.

When word comes down that a chupacabra may have been sighted in Texas – perhaps even killing a man in an old abandoned mining town – Charlie is eager to show her worth. She’s part of the first team that descends on Hooper’s Mill, and there’s definitely an air of danger lingering over the town.

Charlie can feel it. She can sense … something. It’s lurking in the town and watching. Unfortunately for Charlie, she can’t get a handle on whether she’s looking for a human or animal. She just knows that it’s dangerous … and it wants to kill anyone who crosses its path.

When one member of the team goes missing, Charlie realizes she’s running out of time to solve a mystery in the present that has ties to the past. All the while she’s trying to ensure her own future as the jaws of death – in the form of a mythical creature – snap at her heels.

It’s all hands on deck for another adventure, and this time the stakes might be so high not everyone survives.

When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail.
Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.

The best author out there!

For R&R time, it doesn’t get any better than the worlds created by Amanda M Lee. All of her characters will keep you laughing and groaning and ‘Charlie’ is no different. Her silly, annoying yet lovable charm mixed with her super secret magical abilities makes her a favorite. Thank you, Amanda M Lee, for the fun break from reality.

Paranormal mystery/urban fantasy. You say potato, I say potato. It doesn't really matter quibbling over the classification because this can be either one.

If you like the ghost hunter shows that investigate supposed haunted locations this will be right up your alley. It takes place an abandoned gold rush town where Charlie and the Legacy Group investigate claims of a Chupacabra sighting and who might be responsible for killing a man. Things really pick up when one of the group goes missing and Charlie starts of have visions...perhaps of her own death.

Fun. A decent mystery with a little paranormal activity but that doesn't take over the story. It really is very much like a tv episode. Though, Charlie is a bit annoying with her behavior over her "crush."

Spunky heroine and hunky hero

A fun read with engaging characters with dashed of paranormal activity. Charlie may be my favorite from Lee's various series, and Jack is Ramboesque with a sensitive side. I look forward to More Charley.

Fantastically endearing

Though it reminds me of The Harper Harlow series by Lily Harper Hart, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I will definitely continue reading the series. Charlie and Jack are cute & funny together and Millie is perhaps my favorite character thus far.

I liked this one much better than the first one but still felt that the paranormal aspects take the backseat to Charlie learning how to interact with people, putting the focus on her relationships with the various team members. The chupacabra is thrown in here or there but it really is a mystery of who the killer is; I wish there was more about finding and documenting the existence of the chupacabra but it’s not to be. Maybe the next one will have more paranormal elements? I will hang in there for at least one more to see.

Witty, quirky and shyly intelligent Charlie Rhodes is back in another exciting paranormal investigation.

I am really liking Charlie's character she is young and eager. I love her enthusiasm and even her hesitancy at times is endearing one minute she is all gung-ho and the next she is second guessing herself but I know she will grow a stronger self worth with experience and I am looking forward to that.
Jack is the head of security and a huge pain in the behind, especially when it comes to Charlie, the man is beyond frustrating omg you like the girl admit it and move forward stop pretending you dont thats sending mixed signals seriously man up Jack.
personally I dont care if Charlie and Jack get together or not I could see it going wither way in future books but I am getting frustrated with his mixed signals.

I am more into this series for the paranormal aspect i want to see more of Charlie's powers and I want her to open up about them and grow them more I think that will really make these investigations more awesome, the romance or potential romance in this series is more of a sideline for me I personally want loads more paranormal stuff.

A great story with interesting plot twists.

Super cute cozy, fun action packed read

If you have read and enjoyed any of Amanda M Lee's other series, then you will enjoy this one. It is a fairly expected formula that is fun. Filled with a lot of snark and snide comments, budding romance, paranormal mystery and investigation. This series is a little different because it has a team that travels to investigate mysteries blamed on legends. The main character has paranormal talents that she keeps hidden. She has been on her own since she was 18 with no relatives. She is a believer in magic and unproven phenomena. There is a older, crazy fun character in Millie who is set on getting Charlie to have fun. Jack is Charlie's potential romance. He is ex military and super focused on keeping the team safe. He does not believe in magic and works to identify other suspects to resolve the mystery. This is the 2nd book. There are other characters who are still developing. In the first book there was crossover with the Winchester witches. I believe there is crossover to another series in one of the next books. So bottom line, if you like this author and want to read a fun, light, cozy mystery you should enjoy this series as well.

Charlie Rhodes is back, this time investigating a death in Texas that may be the result of one or more Chupacabra. The site of the killing is a small ghost town which actually becomes the focus of much of the mystery. A newcomer to the area is buying up land to open a theme park that incorporates the ghost town. This promises to bring much-needed jobs to the area, but it also threatens the dreams of those who believe the old legend of a treasure trove of silver that was left hidden in the town after the silver boom ended.

The gimmick in this series is that supernatural powers and entities exist (Charlie has telekinesis and some sort of precognitive ability) but that her team can never actually prove that supernatural creatures exist. Bigfoot did make an appearance in the first book and the chupacabra does the same in this book, but not in a way that their existence can be documented. Charlie has also decided to hide her own powers from the group that is trying to prove that such powers exist. That still doesn’t make sense to me, but it’s part of the vibe that makes this series what it is.

In the first book, it felt like bigfoot was an important part of the story. In this book, the chupacabra is barely a sideshow. This is mostly a whodunnit mystery where in the reader will probably put together what is happening faster than Charlie and her friends do. That’s okay. It’s a decent mystery with believable motivations, whether the chupacabra actually did it or not.

I L O V E this book. The first was great, but in my opinion this one was better. Abandoned old west town, Chupacabra, magic, and a whole lot more adventure; what's not to love. I would have enjoyed an actual ghost in the abandoned town but I mean we can't have everything.

The characters are wonderful. The continuing relationship between Charlie and Jack is amazing to watch unfold. I like that they are friends first and foremost. Their banter is enjoyable and very realistic. Laura has a bigger role in this book and I like to hate her. She is concerned about only herself and getting the next hot guy. She isn't a villain by any means but reminds you of the woman we all know in real life just like her. Millie is definitely my other favorite character. She is bright and very perceptive when it comes to people. I love her devotion to the ones she cares about and her utter annoyance with all things dumb. Chris and Hannah are cute but are still mostly background characters that don't get a lot of page time.

If you haven't checked out this series you are definitely missing out. They are super cute paranormal mysteries centered around trying to locate the mystical creatures of legend. The writing and characters are amazing and I cannot get enough! Check it out, you won't regret it. Cheers and Happy Reading!

I liked this one better than the first volume.

The story was well paced and didn't feel like lagging like in the first one. For the first time, I was able to figure out the mobile and who was behind the murder. So I am pretty happy about that haha, but the reveal was still enjoyable. There is a charter, Laura, that you juste love to hate. I swear I didn't hate someone like that in a long time, it was so enjoyable. I hope you understand what I mean haha.

For the con parts... well there is a couples. First, if I had a drink every time Jack said ''because I am the head of security!'' I would be pass out drunk. He was a real saying it so often that I started to wonder if he actually whining while saying it! He also didn't lose his tendency to try and psychanalise Charlie every two seconds and mansplaining what he think she wants to say. It so annoying. Charlie, for her part, gets annoyed at Jack for things that she could juste brush off, but when he was a real b-word, she ''understood'' him and didn't mind. Well, it is a interesting experience to be so not on faze with the lead character.

I will conclude by saying, that it is a good story, well written and worth your time. The part that are annoying can be seen as some of the colors of the book and doesn't warrant to not read it.

A ghost town..

.. legends of lost silver and the mysterious chupacabra are twisted together for the team to unpick but can they do it in time or will one of them join the previous victim, exsanguinated and left laying in full view?

The team are called in when the John Doe turns up, rumours it's the chupacabra float freely, and everyone they speak to has their own chupacabra memory ready to share.

When the body's identified it's not who they expected it to be, instead of the potential buyer who's gone AWOL it's a local rancher who's been obsessed with the land all his life. His daughter seems devastated at being left alone to pay off the ranch mortgages and dismissive of her father's beliefs about the lost silver but not the story of the chupacabra.

With a creepy "tour guide" Zach hitting on Charlie and Laura, Millie takes Charlie out drinking, Jack seems determined to disagree with Charlie over everything, tension rises as the whole team are divided over camping overnight at the site. Can they live with their personal decisions as one of the team disappears right under their noses?

In this second outing in the Charlie Rhodes series, characters - now that they're away from Hemlock Cove - have a chance to stand on their own and be fleshed out into interesting individuals. And now that they are, Charlie is less annoying, Millie is less a Tillie-clone, Jack stands apart from Landon, Chris (the boss) develops beyond "cute guy with crush," etc. While the needling Charlie for her age and enthusiasm is still there, it reads more like needling the newb rather than a largely over-the-top big deal like the first book set it as.

This time around, the group has gone to border-with-Mexico Texas to look for a chupacabra in an abandoned mining town. The group is forced into tight, uncomfortable quarters - from motel to dining options - in a nearby dying town, and no one has much help to give over the chupacabra potential... or what's in this ghost town people might want to kill for.

Overall, this series presents very similar to other AM Lee books. The FMC is mouthy, semi-clueless, and has some "powers" that are hidden or rarely used. The MMC is gorgeous, manly, and a little overpowering in his protective manner. Many statements are repeated over and over again, to the point they can be frustrating. For example - Jack frequently says "shoot me now". They got on a kick about the Olive Garden and I think it's mentioned 5 times. There are times Jack really speaks down to Charlie (he pets her on the head a few times) and he is starting to send mixed signals about some attraction too. Charlie is just starting to admit to a "crush".

That all said - the books can be cute, the secondary characters are pretty fun. I love Millie! Charlie's abilities are shown a few times in this book, which is new. The mystery wasn't all that hard to figure out, but there were a few twists. I'll continue with the series - just slowly. This isn't one for me to binge on.

I'm really enjoying this new series

I'm really enjoying this new series by Ms. Lee and the characters she has created. I'm expecially enjoying Charlie's bluntness and the fact that she really has no filter. Millie, who I really enjoy her character, reminds me a lot of Aunt Tillie. The adventures are fun and always leave you guessing whether it's going to be paranormal or something normal and they always have a bit of fun. I can't wait to see how things progress between Charlie and Jack but I'm going to have to wait for another book to find out I guess. I'm definitely looking forward to book 3 and to see what paranormal entity they're going to be looking for this time.

A fantastic story

Slow to get going but amazing by the end.

I enjoy seeing Charlie interact with her group. The Legacy Foundation tries to find and explain the unusual and unexplainable, usually with a murder involved.

This one takes them to a ghost town. It was well written giving some great atmosphere but not getting over enthusiastic about the history side.

Jack, Millie and Charlie certainly have their hands full. A lot happens but you don't loose track of the key story. There are some fun tongue in cheek moments mainly centred around Charlie and Jack.

It was a very enjoyable story and I am looking forward to their next adventures.

Amanda M Lee is a new all time favorite author. She has a way of drawing you into a book and getting your feeling involved. I can't wait to read the next one in this series. I love Charlie Rhodes and all of the other characters. I can't wait to read more of this series and how she gets other characters from other series into the mix. Can't wait to see where Charlie goes next.I have never laughed and cried reading a book as I have reading hers books. The only other Authors that have manged to do that are Nora Roberts, JD Robb, Catherine Coulter, and Richard H. Stephens. Would love to find more that can do that.

Another fun read from Amanda Lee

Amanda Lee's stories are great. You can devour them like candy. Each one I have read may be formulaic, but each story has a twist that makes the entire book different from the rest.

Tired of cramming your brain with midterm exams? Exhausted by rewriting your legal brief for the umpteenth time? Got so many emails you won't get through them until Thanksgiving, and it's only Labor Day? Take a break and sit down with one, two, or more of these, and read them. You'll feel better and will return to studying, editing your brief, or checking your emails with more oomph than you've had in a long time.

It's REAL

The Chupacabra is real, and this book is real good! I can't wait for the next book. The ending left me only wanting more. More of Charlie and her adventures with Jack, Chris, Millie, Bernard, and Hannah. Not so much Laura, but then that is how Amanda Lee wanted us to feel about Laura. Her writing draws you into the story so much that you laugh out loud, get irritated and feel all the emotions the characters feel. I would and plan to read anything and everything Amanda Lee writes.

Charlie finds herself in a vulnerable position and having to use her powers for this outing to an abandoned and supposedly haunted old mining town. In fact the chupacabra seems to be the sideshow amidst local greed, murder and mayhem. Charlie is troubled by dreams and her handsome and charming security colleague, Jack. He seems to have a protective streak of Charlie a mile wide whilst at the same time being infuriated by her. What's a girl to do? Save herself that's what and Charlie is very capable.

Beware the Dark!

I definitely found this second book in the Charlie Rhodes series a good mystery with paranormal overtones. I mean what’s not to love - there are lots of quirky characters, intense action, & crackling sexual tension between Charlie & Jack. The dialogue was snappy, sarcastic, & super funny. Numerous times I found myself laughing out loud. Amanda M Lee always spins a delightful tale with misfits & magic.

Entertaining series

A very entertaining series a team of Zeno biologist chase after the mysterious the weird the supernatural a myth busters mystery series. A great group of characters chasing Bigfoot the Loch Ness monster at Cetera at Cetera think of a mythical creature and they will go look for it and solving mystery murders and whodunits. Was it done by the supernatural or was it done by humans read to find out.

The legends of the ghost town might hold the key.

Great. A ghost town and a murder. But was it by a human hand or was it by a supernatural creature? Great tight plot that might have you guessing part of the answer but the twist will definitely throw you. The banter between the two main characters is even better in this one as all the characters have evolved in this second book. A really terrific read.

Fun mystery

This story reminds me of a Scooby Doo episode from my childhood. I keep waiting for Hannah to grow a personality and morph into Velma. It hasn't happened yet, but I'm hopeful. Meanwhile, I'm still confused about the non-romance between Jack and Charlie. Between the two out then they apparently have enough issues to keep a fleet of therapists busy full time. I hope that they sort themselves out in later books.

Stopped 30 some pages in …

The first book was ok, but i can’t stand another story about a heroine who is beautiful and doesn’t know it until a guy tells her. I’m also over the fiercely (obnoxiously) protective male. We need to eliminate controlling and bossy from the list of desirable male characteristics. Edward Cullen is not an ideal romantic partner mold. I hope this author phases this out in further books because I generally like her writing and sense of humor.

This is getting interesting.

After reading the first book, I was worried that I wouldn’t like this series (Charlie just can’t keep a though to herself, and has a major impulse control problem), but as I worked my way through this book I discovered that with the fruition of Laura as a complete terror and archenemies to Charlie and Jack, I became more invested in the story - plus Millie is a hoot! So, onwards, ho!

Even better than the 1st

I love the direction this series is heading. I enjoyed this book even more than the first book even though the first one had my favorite witches is in it. A lot that Charlie got showcased her powers more in this book. And I'm surprised at who witnessed them first. I enjoyed the character development and the overall storyline. Definitely recommend

Great story

I'm looking this new series. Charlie is a likable and interesting character, and the members of the foundation round out the group. The story is well plotted with lots of twists and turns and several surprises. There is also a romantic interest and some sexual tension. All in alk, it's a good read.

Another incredibly good story from a great author

I love the storyline, and the snark! Amanda's characters are so fun and serious, all at once! Add in mythical creatures, an Old West Ghost Town, and a murder mystery, and it all adds up to a fantastic story!
I highly recommend this, and all of the authors stories!
