The Fall of the King

Rate this book
There is nothing the Unseelie king doesn’t acquire.

That was until he meets Fionna Cathbad.

A fierce druid, who won’t bow to anyone. Especially Lars. The demon king has every right to kill her, her treasonous acts against the crown are undisputable. But, she is the key to the one thing he wants more than anything. The cauldron of dagda. A powerful treasure that no fae should possess.

To get what he wants, he finds the very thing that forces her to help him, leading them down a dangerous path.

Because it’s not only Fionna who is deceiving him. His own mind is starting to turn on him, twisting his sanity, and releasing the demon he keeps pinned up.

"She had gotten under every inch of my skin, moved into my soul without my knowledge. Taken over. If she died? Hell would pour down on earth."

This is a two POV book, told by the POVs of Lars and Fionna.

I think the most significant about this book is the MCs changing mid series. We go from Kennedy and Lorcan in the previous two books, to Lars and Fionna. It felt a bit weird in the beginning, but I actually didn´t mind it towards the end. Fionna is a total badass. Not only is she a strong druid and an amazing warrior, but also strong willed, independent and speaks her own mind. She has that "I don´t bow to anybody"energy and I truly loved it. Due to that, her and Lars clash constantly and rile each other up. And yes guys, the sexual tension is there, it´s so thick you can almost cut it.

There were a few newly added side characters to this, who I loved. But I think one of my absolute favorites is still Marguerite. She is so kind and has such a huge heart and is really giving off loving grandma vibes. I liked how the backstories for some of the characters were deepened and further explained. However with Kennedy and Lorcan switching from MCs to sidecharacters, I was a bit disappointed that they didn´t even get any appereances in this book.

I really enjoyed the plot, once I got back into it. Although I have to say the the previous two books felt like a duology and this felt like a spin off to that. It was action packed and fast paced which I loved. Some of the plot twists felt expected and some took me by surprise. I think this is also the first time I read about a single parent trope in a fantasy book, but I truly enjoyed the romance aspect in here. I am also glad that the last book is already released, because this left off with a major cliffhanger!

Overall it was an enjoyable and action packed read, but it definitely was different to the previous two books. With that I can´t wait to dive into the last book of this series.

Well hot damn!! This was GOOD. I really enjoyed digging deeper into the Lars we all knew was buried in there. So many books, so many hints and now we get to see more of what we speculated about him.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like Fionna, but I really did. She had the confidence that Ember (in the beginning) and Kennedy lacked. She also didn't pity herself, like Zoey did. She had guilt, but didn't dwell in it (not that she had much time to). Fionna is powerful and SHOWS it.

As with so much of what SMB writes, this book was fast-paced, twisty-turny, and although it didn't end in what I would call a cliffhanger, it did end with such a set-up that I'm not sure how I can wait for the next (and FINAL!) book! Oh and, of course, it was hot!

I know this book is leading up to a fianale that holds all my (our) favorites. I'm so very much looking forward to it, but it was good (and important) to have the stories of these characters. I'm glad we got to see this before the end.

12/01/2020: Reread!

This review MAY contain spoilers. Read at your own risk.

If I am being honest, I was a little intimidated at the thought of reading this book. Eager to read it, yes, but also apprehensive. Lars is such a special character and I was nervous that I wouldn't like his voice. I thought that if I got to know Lars on a deeper level then the magic would be undone and I wouldn't see him in the same light anymore. Luckily, I was just getting myself worked up for nothing because I was very impressed by his character.

The amazing thing about the world encased in the Darkness series, the Collector series, and the Lightness Saga is that the characters are completely captivating. Just as much as the world itself. The characters are very deep and extremely complex. Lars is no different. He has been woven into this huge story, but this is the first time that we get to hear his voice. Lars is just as captivating as the other characters in this world that I have come to love so dearly. I loved that Brown was able to capture the essence of Lars power while still opening him up to the reader. Getting to know Lars inner thoughts and the demons that he fights inside didn't diminish the authoritative qualities of his character. I didn't think that it would be possible before reading this, but I think that getting to know Lars and seeing him relaxed instead of the demon that we have come to know has made his character stronger. More real. I also loved getting to know Fionna's character. She is strong and won't back down from a challenge, no matter the opponent. She fights for what she believes in. I also loved her humor. I loved when she and Lars would make snide comments to each other and make each other smile or smirk.

The romance was perfect. Another slow-burn hate-to-love romance that sizzles with so much intensity. Brown is a master at writing gripping chemistry between characters. All of her books, and this one is no different, have the most incredible chemistry between the characters. Not just with the romantic characters, but all of them. The romantic couples in her books just ooze with more spark. The romance in this book is just as addicting as her other romances. I loved the compatibility of Lars and Fionna. Lars always seemed so untouchable, even in love. Almost like he was so powerful that he could overshadow things like love. But if anything that just made their love story that much more intense. And the fact that Fionna truly is his equal, with her power and her unabashed way of never backing down, just electrifies the chemistry. I was very impressed with their love story. Things kind of left off on a cliffhanger, but I am so hoping for a happy ending for them in the final book.

Like with the other books set in this world and story, this one builds off of the previous world-building. Most of it is already established from the previous books, but I did enjoy the details about the different places that Lars and Fionna traveled to in the book. The descriptions of the people and surroundings were also great.

The loved both the self-contained plot of this book, of Lars and Fionna's story, and also the all-encompassing plot from all three series: the Darkness series, the Collector series, and the Lightness Saga. I love how clever and well put together the overall plot is. So much time and energy must have gone into the story, and it shows. It's brilliant, and I love it! I love the overall premise of this story and the world itself. I love the originality and freshness.

Overall, I was thrilled by this book! Getting to know a King is an intimate endeavor that I am honored to have undertaken by reading this book. This is the sort of paranormal romance that ignites my heart. I love that the romance is present throughout the book but it doesn't dominate the story. It lives and breathes with the story. The same with the other books in this world. If you love feisty female characters, dominant bad boys, intriguing world-building, riveting plot, and romance that will burn your insides then pick up the first book in this world, Darkness of Light, and thank me later.

Ugh i need the next book right now !!!

As of right now i am so upset we have to wait god knows how long for the final i instalment of a series that has completely captured not only my imagination but also my heart. What a journey weve been on so far with these characters i feel like i lived every word and page with them and although we only have one book to go im excited but also incredibly sad that it will be over!!!

Lars was so much more than i hoped he would be and Stacey once again made me fall head over heels in love with one of her bad boys which honestly i wouldn't expect anything less.
In my eyes no one writes a kickass female lead as good as Stacey and Fionna was no different these females go toe to toe with there bad boys and always come out on top its so refreshing!!!

This world id such a magical place you just cant help but get swept up in the excitement of it and you never know what to expect but i do know that the final instalment is going to be EPIC and blow all my expectations out the water this without a doubt i know!!!

I would have really liked this book so much more if it wasn't for the fact that I hate characters like Fionna. I really truly hate it when characters are so full of themselves, thinking that they're better than everyone and to prove it they keep shoving their self-inflated ego into everyone's face. They show nobody respect no matter who they are or their station and just push and push and push. All they do is cause confrontation and you can't have a single conversation without them making it a fight. Fionna was that character and I was just so pissed off that Lars would end up with her.

I absolutely love Lars and learning more about him was just awesome. I was so happy when he would talk about Ember and how he really felt about her. It was sad to see just how much of his true self he has been hiding for such a long time and hear of his regrets. Unfortunately all of his careful control and solid thinking is so easily shattered by one annoying Druid.

Like I said, I didn't like Fionna. But I will say that towards the end she did get a lot easier for me to deal with. Once she accepted what was between her and Lars she didn't always act like such a stuck up bitch. She was shockingly sweet rarely even. Yes. She is extremely powerful, but I didn't like how that made her act like she was so superior to every single person.

So we know that Lars captured Fionna at the end of the last book and instead of killing her, as is his right, he is keeping her alive because he knows he'll need her in order for him to get his hands on the last treasure. She refuses to give in and Lars doesn't actually want to torture her, so he finds an even better way to get what he wants. Fionna thought she carefully hid her one and only weakness, but she was very wrong. And now Lars has leverage over her so off they go to get the cauldron. Fionna thinks herself so very clever by lying to Lars at first but that quickly only makes him even more angry. And she's not the only one causing that rage to boil.

While on this treasure hunt, Lars and Fionna are constantly attacked. Even worse, Lars fears he is losing his mind because he keeps seeing people that he knows are dead. The emotions between these two are always one extreme or another. Hot or cold. It is quite the roller coaster ride for the both of them and always ends up with some sort of explosion.

While they are successful in their hunt, Lars refuses to accept what fate awaits Fionna and he screws everything up. Even worse, Lars finally confronts his enemy. And it wasn't somebody him or I was expecting. And definitely a very, very bad thing. What's happening between Lars and this person is devastating and will have profound repercussions all over the world. With help, Lars and Fionna do manage to make it back to his home. But the peace there is so very temporary. Seeing no other way, and no longer able to fight it, Lars does something unthinkable. And the price is much heavier than he ever expected.

Can I just point out that Lars had the chance TWICE to kill this enemy but chose not to? I get that he made the choice each time in order to save Fionna, but let's be real here. It would have taken him, what, a couple seconds to finish the guy off? I really don't think it would have been what cost Fionna her life either time, and if he had done so before, the world wouldn't fast be approaching a horrible end.

Never thought I would love Lars but he has given Lorcan a run for his money. This gripping instalment was the story I was waiting for! Sizzling chemistry with the King finally meeting his match. Love this series so much I never want it to end. Stacey has hit gold with this amazing series and Characters!

I knew that for this to be Lars story it would have to be a phenomenal one and Stacey certainly didn't disappoint. Throughout the Darkness and Lightness series I have gone backwards and forwards between liking and hating Lars. He has this personality up until this book that makes you want to slap him often, that puts you on the fence as to whether you trust him or not. This book shows the real man behind the King.

It was always going to be someone exceptional to knock the Unseelie Demon King off his feet and who better then his druid prisoner, his enemy Fiona. She certainly knows how to stand her ground where he is concerned and that makes her even hotter in my books.

Fiona and Lars are both quite similar in personality, they have both done things they aren't proud of, doing what they think is best for their people. It just happens to put them on the opposites sides of the war line.

Can I just say quickly OMG how funny was a drunk Lars!! loved it <3

After the way this book ended I am on tender hooks waiting for the next book. I have a feeling this is going to be the ultimate finish to this series and quite the ride!

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review from the Author and Next Step PR

I don’t know where to begin the fall of the king is one of the best series in 2017 I fell in love with Lars he’s ignorant sexy sweet nice mean all wrapped up in one and very vulnerable at time . In this book you get to see the real him. Fionna character is one bad Druid .she do not back down from no one not even the king .. their chemistry is hot .. their argument get so hot slowly she lets the king in to her life. Get ready for hotness action .. secret expose .Family reappears fighting for power or maybe fighting to keep love. Fighting to have a family the king battles with in himself and his feelings get ready
Must read if you love fae and all type of creatures.

All Hail the King 💓💓

If you think the Dark Dwellers are hot just wait until you meet the Demon King! The level of passion Fionna and Lars exudes will scorch the earth. I thought the relationships from the previous books (Ember/Eli, Zoey/Ryker, West/Rez, Kennedy/Lorcan) were full of fire and love/hate but these two set a whole new bar for frustration. I knew Fionna would be a force to be reckoned with from Lightness Falling and West, but I underestimated just how fierce this little Druid truly is. Lars is powerful, demanding, sexy, a true alpha's alpha. This book was a complete edge of your seat thrill ride, with a twist I never saw coming. I could not put this one down. Its only been 5 hours and I'm already having a book hangover. It is also bittersweet knowing this is the second to last book in the Darkness/Collector/Lightness series 😢. I can't wait to see what happens when all of my favorite characters meet up in the final chapter to the greatest series, all 3 sagas, concludes. I'm especially looking forward to a Cal/Sprig collabo, now that would be a bromance I'd totally worship. With this latest book Stacey Marie Brown, is to me, the all time undisputed queen of paranormal/sci-fi/romance. I eagerly await the next book. P.S. thank you Stacey for creating such a wonderful world and allow me to explore it with you.

I can't believe how great this novel was, **I Received ARC Novel for Review**

Lars: Demon King, Sexy, mysterious, and bone chillingly scary. You challenge him you won't live to see the next second of your life. But behind his Kingly facade he wants love and a family but that was taken when he made the choice for power over love, now, he has his kingdom to save and the only thing he believes will help is the Cauldron. And he will do whatever it takes to get it.

Fionna: Druid, she is captive by Lars and will do everything in her power to stop him from finding the cauldron, even challenging him at ever turn.

The powerful intense passion between these two is unbelievable that you can feel it in your bones. I'm in love with Lars and I hope the challenges ahead he gets to finally tell his feelings to those who needs to hear it. I was so excited to hear his story I couldn't wait to know who he fell for. This novel had intense challenges between Fionna and Lars, whether it was between enemies, each other, or themselves. This novel will never leave you bored I had a hard time finishing it because I didnt want it to end but I'm very excited for Stacey's next novel and the huge challenge Fionna and the rest of the group will have to face.

I recommend this novel to everyone. Don't read this novel if you havent read the rest of her series. This is a must read!

1. Darkness series
2. West
3. Collector series
4. Lightness series

Jesus, Stacey! What in the bloody hell have you done to me???

My heart is in tatters and my gut is twisted in knots with how you’ve left us and with thoughts of what’s to come.

I knew you were going to put us through the ringer, but by hell I was not expecting this.

Stacey has created a world with characters that have weaved their way and taken up residence in our hearts and who will forever stay there.
We feel every single emotion that bleeds through these pages, and by god we got it in bucket loads with TFOTK.

The anguish, the hate, the raw and primal hunger seeped out and dowsed is from head to toe, drowning us.
Lars was EVERYTHING plus more. I absolutely loved getting in his head and really did not want to leave. We get to see him as the ruthless King as well as see him at his most vulnerable...and it’s only just beginning.

The next book...I’m both excited and dreading. I can’t wait to get back into this world and to see all the characters we have come to love come together, again. But I know it’s not going to be plain sailing. Not with Stacey at the helms.
It’s going to be THE END and I’m not sure if I’m ready for that. To let this magical world and its characters go.

It’s going to be EPIC. UNPREDICTABLE. EXHILARATING. I just hope we can survive it.

OMG so this is Lars' story. In the last book he took Fiona, who happens to be Kennedy's sister, and made a deal with Kennedy to keep Fiona alive. Kennedy has to find the last of the four treasures. The Cauldron of Dagda. In this book, you get to see inside Lars' mind, and I have been waiting for this since he first made an appearance!! This is one of the best books so far in the series (and that's saying a lot because I LOVED Sprig)!! If you haven't read this one, DO IT!! The final book EVER is coming out soon and this book will have you in tears, tatters, and on the edge of your seat!!! You will run the gamut of emotions. I loved this one and cannot wait to read Rise from the Embers, but at the same time I'm a little sad because it is coming to an end.

3.5/5

I was not expecting this book to be a dual POV of Lars and Fionna, this really made it hard to get into the book because I missed Lorcan and Kennedy. After about the 30% mark I finally let the hope go that we would go back to Kennedy and was able to get into the book. It still wasn't my favorite installment but I grew to like Lars and Fionnas relationship and overall did enjoy this book. Do I think this book was entirely necessary? No, as most of it was spent building Lars and Fionnas characters to progress 3 plot points but none the less I enjoyed it and I will be finishing the series.

Holy shite!

Amazing! I just love Lars! I didn’t think I was going to like Fionna because she was so crappy in the last book but I did! I love both of them. Such a sad ending too... Lars being shoved away in the corner of his mind to be taken over by the stone.
Can’t wait to read the next and final book in the Light/Dark/Collector Series! When all my favourite character are all going to join together and fight for the rightful king Lars!

Rating this 5 stars simply because I could not put it down and finished it in just a couple days. Stacey Marie Brown is an excellent story teller and the way this story is unfolding is thrilling and exciting. I can’t wait to see how this all ends and how it connects even more to the next two installments in her Savage Lands series.

Wow she's done it again another amazing book with beautiful character development and diverse character relationships. the sharp-witted wordplay between Fiona and Lars had me grinning through the entire book.
the only part I didn't understand was why Lara couldn't kill the person he needed to kill why they were unconscious since it was a perfect opportunity but it also would have ended the book right there and have no need for a final installment.
