The Lovers: Cards of Love

Rate this book
I loved him first.

Jake was my best friend in college-my very straight best friend, until one night he was more. He may have ran after what happened between us, but I never forgot him.

When fate puts us in the same place, five years later, he has a fiance by his side. Carina is beautiful, driven, and draws my attention almost as much as he still does.

A game of truth or dare leads to a wild night and a relationship that has our feelings growing into something bigger than any of us intended.

But what happens when our feelings deepen? Can I handle being with two people?

If it means I can have him, I’ll love them both.

I'm so angry and upset right now. I went into this book thinking it would be some kind of poly relationship. Think again. It. Is. Not. It's basically a M/M story, where one guy (Jake) can't admit that he's attracted to another man (Jackson) and using his fiancé (Carina) as a medium to justify his attraction.

Never in my life have I felt so betrayed for someone. I'm furious on behalf of Carina. She truly cared and loved Jake and he goes behind her back and cheated on her.
“You deserve better. You look like a woman who doesn’t come second. First or nothing.”
You deserved more than this. More than me dragging you through this. You deserve a better man—a better friend. You deserve to be happy.”
Be first. Two words that I would keep with me in everything. I deserved to be first.
Carina, sweetheart. You are a queen and you deserve all the loyalty, passion and happiness! Carina was not flawless, she almost made a huge mistake by kissing that bartender, but after what she has witness between Jackson and Jake, it's understanding that she's upset and didn't think clear. I'm just glad she didn't cheat. I'm just reading Another to see Carina get her HEA! I admire her strength so much, she could still go to Jackson to threaten him in case he would break Jake's heart, even though she was heartbroken herself and just got cheated on by him. I really don't know a better person. My deepest respect!

Now let me get to Jake and Jackson. I hate them. I loathe them. I despite them. But Jackson less than Jack, cause at least he knows what he wants. Jake on the other hand is just chicken shit and a coward. I'm pretty sure if you open a dictionary and go to the word coward, you'll find a picture of Jake as a definition. He was a shitty best friend, an even shittier fiancé. I know I'm being harsh, but I absolutely can't stand people like Jake. He denied his feelings for Jackson over and over again and hurted him so many times. And yes, it's way easier to judge someone if you've never been in the same situation and Jake was struggling with his sexuality and what others would think of him a lot. While this is topic, I think, many people can relate to cause their families/friends/whatsoever are close-minded, the way Jake's struggled with it was so damn annoying. He hurted the people he cares for most in the process.

I don't mind M/M stories, but if you've read the blurb, it's totally misleading. I was blindsided. Throw in the cheating trope and what you get is me enraged.

One Star for Carina. And only for her.

2.5?

This isn't a trope I'm ordering off the romance menu often, though not for the obvious reason. I'm not wild about being reminded that the world we live in continues to be intolerant.

Jake grapples with his fear of being rejected by those he loves, losing clout in his company, disappointing his mother and deceased father who on his deathbed requested he have lots of grandkids to keep his widowed mother happy and busy. I felt for him but where I think Cole really tried and had some success was depicting Jake's struggle with his feelings for Jackson. He has never felt any sort of attraction to another man aside from Jackson. Jake's in his 30s so his aversion to suddenly identify as "gay" was something I could understand. But it also made me sad that this is still a thing.

What else made me sad was the fact that both he and Jackson were dishonest with Carina and ultimately hurt her deeply. Cheating happens and I'm not one to stick my head in the sand about it, though I wouldn't call it a "fun" thing to read about. However, this scenario is loosely realistic, maybe not the ménage part, but the friends who have history, revisit history and realize they want a future then feelings/actions spiral out without really considering the consequences rang true. Nonetheless it doesn't change that Carina became collateral damage, being used repeatedly for Jake and Jackson to get their HEA. The fact that she realized something was wrong in her relationship is irrelevant and I got the impression that particular plot point circled around sanctioning Jake and Jackson actions as above impunity which raised my hackles.

None of this is a surprise when reading it, just so you know. The endgame is a foregone conclusion which is fine but it was missing something that hindered my connection to them. Something that I found borderline offensive was all the "man/masculine" references. I understand people have a type and kinks, etc. Trust me. I TOTALLY get it. But how many times do I have to be reminded that Jackson and Jake are so manly? How many times do I have to read the word "dominate" or "top" or "bottom"? Why does it matter? Enjoying topping or bottoming doesn't make one more or less masculine. Topping and dominating aren't synonymous.

BUT! The sex was pretty hot. So there is that.

I probably wouldn't recommend this story but now I feel *compelled* to read about Carina finding her happy. Though I think I'll take a break and come back later so hopefully maybe I can forget about the numerous words and phrases this authors beats like a dead horse.

5 Exceptional Stars ⭐️

The Lovers by Fiona Cole, has to be one of the best ménage stories I have read by far.

With endless choices out there, I struggle to find one that is actually credible.

Not only was this story so hot I was chewing ice cubes while reading, it hit me in the gut with all the feels between each character. Their feelings of lust, friendship and ultimately attaining their one true love overwhelmed me. I thought this was perfectly written and the ending for me….. was meant to be.

I was obsessed with The Lovers before I even had it on my kindle. After reading it, it exceeded my high expectations. While I was expecting delicious, forbidden sex (and it has it), The Lovers also had a full exploration of complex and intricate relationships and characters who work their way through their emotions. It’s that satisfying kind of read that has a story and a backstory, but also tons of yummy naughtiness. Definite must read.

Fiona Cole upped the ante and definitely brought her A game! The Lovers is my favorite! Hands down, her best work. It’s an emotional and beautiful story of finding the love of a lifetime. All the fells were felt!!

The writing is great.
The characters are vivid.
The plot is the bright and shining star. It was unexpected, but completely appreciated.

I can’t wait to read more of this series!

😢😢😢😢 I'm soooo bummed! I wanted to love this because the narrators. OMG! Talk about a dream team! GREG BOUDREAUX, TEDDY HAMILTON AND JO RAYLAN! The performances were mouth watering. Sadly, the story (the 32% I listened to) was annoying me. And from the reviews I've read, I don't think the rest will work for me.

Jake Wellington and Carina Russo were childhood best friends. Years of friendship finally led to love filled with exciting and adventurous sex. But they wanted to try something that had only been a fantasy before. The answer came when Jackson Fields walked into their life and took their relationship to the next level.

"Just fucking admit it. It's not about being into guys, it's about caring for someone and feeling that connection. You feel a connection with me and that's what's so attractive about us. Why can't you just accept it?".

I love the dynamic between the characters. Each one of them were confident, dominant and successful individual but behind the facades, they had their own weaknesses and vulnerabilities. It was interesting seeing how they handled each other as a group and as individuals. I also love the direction the author took for the story to.

The sex scenes were absolutely explosive. It didn’t matter if it was MMF, MF or MM, each one of them were orgasmic and there were plenty of them to satisfy every needs.

Lovers is a story of friendship, love and acceptance. It would appeal to fans of sexy, angsty romance.

Note:
I love Andrew. He appeared in limited scenes but stole every single one of them. I hope get gets his own book. I’d definitely be interested in a certain kink he suggested haha!

Sweet baby Jesus, this review will never make it to Amazon. I have too many dirty words to edit to make my review G-rated.

Jackson and Jake have a complex past that was glazed over in Voyeur. Jackson has always missed Jack and their friendship, until one day Jack shows up for a meeting at Jackson’s work.

Jake shows up with his fiancée, Carina, who he has known his whole flow; she was there to pick up the pieces when he needed her the most. Jake has always been confused when it comes to his feelings for Jackson.

Carina, very comfortable with her sexuality and very opened learns about their past with a game of truth or dare. I swear this is not the first book and sure as hell won’t be the last with this game. Truth or dare is scorching hot, Jake never backs down from a dare, and his fiancée asked for it. I so wanted to be part of their game or to watch.

That was one of the best MMF threesome scenes I have read in a while. I love how they left all modesty at the door. They are some dirty birds. You know that dirty you can’t or don’t want to wash off. 🥵 that is how it should be, and each sex scene is different, and they continue to experiment. I was letting my freak flag fly high and front in center.

My concern is when you start to add a third person in, make sure you have a solid, unbreakable foundation.

The sex scenes alone are stellar; you will need an extra pair of panties and cigarettes. I mean, Jackson is handsome and does live porn for a living, then add another alpha male and a woman comfortable with herself.

If I could rate this book on spice alone, I would give it a ten. My concern was I had whiplash with Jack. His back and forth after a while got to me, to be honest. I did enjoy this book, just not as much as book one.

Not for me. Too many lady parts. 🤣

Yes yes I knew going in it was a MF turned MMF turned MM. Which is why I’m leaving it unrated. I only have myself to blame for the disappointment. I guess I was hoping there wouldn’t be as much F in the equation.

Disappointment on that element aside, I also wasn’t big on the writing. Things were kind of sappy and cheesy.

If you see this Nikki, I blame you because you were asking for recommendations on Facebook and this one came up. I kid.

4.5 Stars!

While working together on a current business project, Jake Wellington, Carina Russo and Jackson Fields decide to participate in some erotic threesome fun. With each having their own reasons for experiencing this dynamic, buried feelings come to the surface. For each, they need to confront the truth of their past and present.

“I want you to keep your promise. You promised to be my friend no matter what the outcome of all this.”

Between these three, Jake is the link, as he is engaged to Carina and knew Jackson while attending college. As such, their personalities mesh well even with Jake and Jackson both being dominant. From the beginning, Jake and Carina have a solid sexual chemistry but when Jackson is added to the mix, it is absolutely combustible. Jackson knows exactly what to do during their threesome and is incredibly hot!

“The sight of his cum coating my length was filthy and erotic. I pushed inside her, pulling out slowly just to watch the creaminess of them both spread all over my dick.”

In starting this book, I was under the impression the plot was going to slant a certain way in the menage theme, and it certainly pleased me when it did! But the story also delved into much more and it enriched the character development. With each having a certain role, friendship remains the crux but it also grows into much more.

Lovers will appeal to those looking for a hot as hell read with a substantive story.

5 Perfect Love Crowns

Lord, oh lord. Fiona Cole slayed me. Set me in fire with how hot this book was and broke my heart and mended it all in one story! It is utterly fantastic!

The tale of Jackson, Carina, and Jake is just too much. Readers will love them. There is nothing to hate, and yet, readers will know where this is going. They will see the signs just like the characters do, and it hurts, even when it is the inevitable end. The crux of it all is Jake, and my heart broke for him, but because of him we get some of the best parts of the book.

Through Jake and other characters, Fiona Cole relays themes that we so desperately needed shouted into the world. Jake and Jackson and Carina exhibit that sexual orientation can’t be easily defined and why does it need to be. Why can’t a person just be attracted to someone’s soul and heart? The sexual liberation of her characters opens that world to know it is okay to desire what you desire. It doesn’t lessen your love or your relationship or your worth. These characters are brave and put who they are out until the world, not because they don’t care what others think but because their happiness and their love is worth more than the hate, and that is a beautiful thing.

Fiona Cole owns this reader heart. Her writing is impeccable, her romances dirty and filled to the brim with emotion and love, and her captivate me mind, body and soul. I will one-click anything she writes.

Fiona Cole is one of the only authors who can make me equal parts horny & emotional !!! She's a word wizard I swear. This one is not your average MMF - it's so much more. So many feels, so much history and chemistry so hot that it might just blow up your kindle. Straight into my 2018 Favourites for this little bundle of deliciousness!!

I fell in love with Jackson's character in Voyeur. I knew there was more to this dirty boy than met the eye and I was right. This is his story. His love story. Not always pretty and not always nice but isn't that the case with all the best love stories. I think so.

You definitely get the heat you'd expect from a MMF read but because it's Fiona, you also get that balanced with delicious angst and a dash of pain. Everyone deserves their HEA, but will they get it? A story where a simple game of truth or dare changes three people's lives forever. Filthy Perfection!

Welp... I went in with little info on this one other then it was a MMF, and was about Jackson, from “Voyeur.” “Another,” the latest release, of which I’ve read good things about, is also connected, so I picked this one up to bridge the gap. However, I was left with more of a WTH kind of experience than I bargained for. After I’d finished, I had to double check to see how this story was classified as an MMF, it sure didn’t seem that way. Anyway, I know I’m being vague; I just don’t know how to rate, or for that matter review this book without giving away spoilers. From the other ratings and reviews I’ve read, it looks like there are plenty that enjoyed it. However, this book just wasn’t for me...

The Lovers was hot as hell but more importantly it had a story to tell. I don’t believe in labels when it comes to sexuality. Jackson and Jake have history but what happened between them back then scared Jake off. Now Jake is struggling with his attraction to Jackson and the expectations from his parents and people around him. Jackson knows what he wants. Jake.
The chemistry between Jake, Carina and Jackson was fabulous. I enjoyed the struggle the three of them had to go through. They all had their own battle to fight and hurting one another was inevitable. Jackson’s brother Andrew was a wonderful addition to the story and the epilogue had a fabulous cameo of some of the other characters from Voyeur universe. What a way to end The Lovers.

You deserve to be first...

Fiona you gutted me with this idea that love is just love. Love can be without labels. I wanted Jake and Jackson. I longed to be the butter in their love sandwich. I envied Carina until I didn't. What she had to give, to realize her own truth was beautiful. Then Jake, strong yet wimpy. Commanding yet, selfish. How could he believe his friendships with those he loved could ever be enough?

This book, I picked up on a whim. I promised myself I would read this series this year. Hell I read 100 books a year, twenty shouldn't phase me. But when I cracked this puppy up, I became glued to my Ipad. Trying to get a few minutes no matter where that might occur. Just to get a little further into the story. It was if, Jackson, Jake and Carina were real. For once I felt shame for how society relates to love. We should not judge or question who we love. We should just be thankful that any one person in our harsh cruel world is lucky enough to experience it.

I have read many a steamy book, but this was so much more than that. It opens with a relationship, an engagement rather between a man and woman. But it evolves into a quest for passion, acceptance and love. You see, feel and want what they want as a collective. I don't want to retell the story, I just want to thank the author for taking me down this journey and truly opening my mind. Who you love does not define your sexuality. We can not limit ourselves. Love is love. Sex is sex. An act between two people that results in Stimulation that ends in climax if you are lucky. So this whole book just snuck up on me. I was in the middle watching it unfold.

Overall it was well written and worth my time and energy. Try this one. You won't be sorry.

I loved it. So many feelings, so much tension and angst. Exactly what I like.
I admit I felt disappointed that the romance didn't go towards a polyamorous relationship, but it ended up being really good anyways.

After reading the first two books of this series and seeing how the stories push sexual boundaries, and enjoying it, I still can't help but wish the mentality behind all of it was more open minded. There is too much mention of jealousy and overall too monogamous ideologically for my preference. For such forward thinking situations, I feel that the monogamous ideals surrounding it all get in the way of having a more natural, aware and healthier progression of the relationships.

In this book there is mention of cheating, but I just can't see those situations as cheating. What happens is more complex than that. To simplify it and confine it that way is, in my opinion, the erroneous perspective from where to approach those situations and as such there is missing an actual mindfulness. Showing a more forwards thinking towards the typical monogamous ideals and expanding those confines, would have made these stories more valuable in my opinion. Then again, most people looking for romance books aren't that open to any kind of polyamorous mentality...

Is it just me or is it a little hot in here??

*Fans self*

Hello hotness!
This is a sizzling spin-off from Fiona’s book, Voyeur, but can totally be read as stand-alone. It’s the story of struggle, lust, and acceptance; of being honest with one’s feelings and taking the chance to act on them.

Jake and Jackson were best friends, but after they experience one fabulous night in college, Jake pulls away and their friendship is distanced. Until now. Now Jake is engaged to his childhood friend, Carina. Jackson has hired Jake & Carina to assist in opening his new bar, which puts them all having to work closely together. Jackson’s re-entry into Jake’s life begins to complicates things as Jake starts to question his true feelings for him.

"You seem pretty into me." He waited for me to say something and I clenched my jaw, holding back all the words fighting to escape. "Just f****ing admit it. It's not about being into guys, it's about caring for someone and feeling that connection. You feel a connection with me and that's what's so attractive about us. Why can't you just accept it?"
"It doesn't matter if I did accept it. It wouldn't change anything for me."

This is told from 3 POV: Jake, Jackson, and Carina. The conflict arises from the internal struggle each has as the relationship between these three begins to develop and change. To me, it was a very interesting take on how complex and surprising human relationships can be. It’s a reminder that expectations -which tend gravitate toward the worst case scenario - are not always accurate. It’s a tale that shows how fear can dominate our thoughts, which leads to a clouded sense of anticipated reactions. It teaches to give those you love a chance!

I don’t tend to read many MMF books, but after reading the author’s prior book, Voyeur, I had to read it! I really enjoyed this story. There’s a solid plot and strong characters. There’s also a lot of sexy times, more than Voyeur (I think). In that respect, this book has more of an erotica edge than a typical NA/contemporary. If you’re a fan of Sierra Simone or Tiffany Reisz, pick this one up!

This book is hot, very hot. One thing Fiona Cole can write well is sex scenes.
I don't know why the author chose similar names for the main male characters but at first I was a little confused and had to remember that Jake was not Jackson's nickname.

This is another book that I could have sworn would end up in a polyamorous relationship and I was wrong but in no way was I upset that this was not the case.

The romance is very cute, and I'm going to be honest, in Jackson's situation I would have given up, I hate to see characters that are fantastic suffering right and left.
That said, the book is great but I advise you to be prepared for some serious angst.
